SAT SAT 18:30 Opera on 3 b07j3h2g (Listen) SAT Iain Bell's In Parenthesis SAT SAT Iain Bell: "In Parenthesis" SAT SAT The young British composer Iain Bell's new commission, SAT recorded last month at Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff, SAT adapts a critically acclaimed WW1 text by the Welsh poet, SAT David Jones. Carlo Rizzi conducts the Chorus and Orchestra SAT of Welsh National Opera. SAT SAT First published in 1937, "In Parenthesis" is based on Jones' SAT experiences as an infantryman with the Royal Welch Fusiliers SAT in the Battle of the Somme. The opera follows Private John SAT Ball and his comrades from an army Parade Ground in England SAT in December 1915 to the Front line in France. Only visible SAT to Ball, two bards, Britannia and Germania, and a Chorus of SAT Remembrance, act as narrators. Ball is a visionary who SAT straddles real and mythical worlds, forseeing a dark SAT underworld ahead. The advance into Mametz Wood leaves Ball SAT as the sole survivor of his troop. Wounded, he sees the SAT surrounding carnage transform into a place of beauty, SAT offering regeneration and hope. Artistic Director of WNO SAT David Pountney directs this production on the centenary of SAT the Battle of the Somme. SAT SAT Synopsis SAT SAT In a place out of time, two bards – representing Britannia SAT and Germania – and a Chorus of Remembrance, contemplate ‘the SAT many men so beautiful’ who went to war. SAT SAT Private John Ball and his platoon of Royal Welch Fusiliers SAT travel from Southampton to France on their journey to Mametz SAT Wood. Throughout the journey, Ball experiences nightmarish SAT visions of increasing intensity, where his comrades and SAT surroundings appear to take on mythological dimensions, SAT ranging from souls entering the underworld, to Chris leading SAT his sheep. SAT SAT In France, John Ball narrowly escapes death when a single SAT shell impacts close by. The platoon then march to the Front SAT Line on Christmas Eve. Six months later, they receive orders SAT to move South to join the Battle of the Somme and find SAT themselves taking part in the assault on Mametz Wood. At SAT dawn a chorus of Dryads can be heard from within the forest. SAT With the Queen of the Woods, they bring death and SAT destruction to the forest, and Ball is the only survivor. SAT The Queen of the Woods and her Dryads then transform into SAT benevolent redeemers and garland the dead men with flowers SAT and greenery bringing regeneration and re-birth with their SAT prayers. He shot to fame, when The Beatles SUN cast him in The Magical Mystery Tour. George Martin produced SUN his records, John Peel had him on numerous sessions, SUN Bertrand Russell admired him, he wrote plays for Radio 3. SUN But it is his voice that distinguishes Cutler. His studied SUN melancholia and frail persona tells naive fables which have SUN an existential sting in the tail. He grew up in Glasgow when SUN the pursuit of happiness was never going to be written in SUN the constitution. SUN SUN The radio adaptation is based on an original play by SUN Vanishing Point and National Theatre of Scotland created by SUN Sandy Grierson, James Fortune and Matthew Lenton, with Ed SUN Gaughan and the company. SUN SUN Like most 'loveable' eccentrics Ivor was a provocateur. Off SUN stage we also tell the love story of Ivor and the poet SUN Phyllis King who were together 40 years. It is a romance SUN told in tiny moments of cups of tea and trips to the zoo, SUN and his most lovely song: Beautiful Cosmos. Ivor is played SUN by Sandy Grierson and Phyllis is played by Elicia Daly. SUN SUN Like Bob Dylan, Ivor's brilliant song writing is sometimes SUN hidden by an idiosyncratic delivery. James Fortune has SUN arranged Ivor's songs for a small ensemble which have been SUN specially recorded for Radio 3 by Julian Simmons. FRI FRI 10am FRI Sarah's guest this week is the illustrator, writer and FRI Children's Laureate Chris Riddell. The spotlight is on the Romantic FRI period and the newfound equality between instruments as FRI expressed in Brahms' Sonata for Clarinet and Piano Op.120 FRI No. 2. FRI FRI 11am FRI Sarah's artist of the week is the Canadian pianist FRI Marc-André Hamelin. Sarah shares his recordings of piano FRI classics ranging from the fleeting images of Schumann's FRI Waldszenen and Janacek's From an Overgrown Path to the FRI highly-structured sonatas of Mozart and Haydn, as well as FRI sampling his own composition: Etudes in all the minor keys. FRI FRI 12:00 Composer of the Week b07j3yj1 (Listen) FRI Bernard Stevens (1916-1983), Under a Shadow FRI FRI Bernard Stevens under the shadow of cancer completes his FRI opera The Shadow of the Glen, presented by Donald Macleod FRI FRI The music of Bernard Stevens has largely been forgotten FRI today, and yet he was rated by some as equal to Benjamin FRI Britten. Stevens shot to fame when he won the Daily Express FRI competition for a victory symphony, a work he'd largely FRI composed in his evenings during the Blitz. With this public FRI acclaim he soon found himself writing for films starring FRI Dirk Bogarde and James Mason, but gave up this career in the FRI film industry later taking up the post of Professor of FRI Composition at the Royal College of Music where he remained FRI for over thirty years. Public success was short-lived for FRI Stevens partly due to his Communist ideals, and partly FRI because he wasn't interested in self-promotion. He continued FRI composing until his death in 1983 and left a substantial FRI portfolio of works including symphonies, concertos, chamber FRI and solo piano music, and also opera. Throughout the week FRI his daughter Catherine Stevens joins Donald Macleod to lift FRI the veil over her father's life and music. FRI FRI In the last decade of his life Bernard Stevens was diagnosed FRI with cancer. He largely kept his illness private from his FRI students and colleagues at the Royal College of Music, and FRI kept on teaching and also composing music. With an Arts FRI Council Grant Stevens was able to take time away from FRI teaching in order to complete his opera The Shadow of the FRI Glen, which was recorded in the year before his death. The FRI last work he completed was his Concertante for Two Pianos. FRI Two pianists also visited Stevens to perform for him his FRI Piano Concerto originally composed in 1955, but later FRI revised. Stevens was thoroughly delighted with the work, but FRI the very next day he went into care and never returned home FRI again.
