SAT Neville Cardus
SAT
SAT With the Ashes underway, Music Matters pays tribute to a
SAT legendary writer on music and cricket. Born in Rusholme,
SAT Manchester, Neville Cardus was the first ever music critic
SAT to be knighted, and is widely recognised as the father of
SAT cricket journalism. He spent most of his life writing
SAT about both passions for the Guardian, with a distinctive
SAT style that was very much of its time.
SAT
SAT Robin Daniels, author of a new memoir, and fans Roy
SAT Hattersley, Christopher Hogwood and James Naughtie, share
SAT their thoughts on Cardus's importance for the sporting
SAT and musical worlds, and to assess his legacy Petroc is
SAT joined by fellow journalists and writers on music and
SAT cricket, Michael Kennedy and Michael Henderson.
SAT
SAT Cardus: Celebrant of Beauty by Robin Daniels is published
SAT by Palatine Books (£25.00 hardback)
SAT
SAT The Art of French Piano Music
SAT
SAT French piano music has been a lifelong passion for author,
SAT academic and pianist Roy Howat - he has been playing,
SAT editing, teaching and talking about it for over 30 years.
SAT For many pianists, an air of mystery surrounds French
SAT piano music of the late 19th and early 20th centuries -
SAT that of Debussy, Ravel, Chabrier and Fauré. In a new
SAT book, Howat argues that the music contains no secrets, and
SAT its performance should be equally straightforward. He also
SAT explores the links between the music and impressionistic
SAT art of the period.
SAT
SAT At the piano he joins Petroc to discuss and demonstrate
SAT his ideas.
SAT
SAT The Art of French Piano Music by Roy Howat is published by
SAT Yale University Press (£30.00 hardback)
SAT
SAT Roy Howat performs Fauré with the Kreutzer Quartet at
SAT Wiltons Music Hall in London on Sunday 19th July and his
SAT new 2-CD set of Fauré piano solos and duets (with Emily
SAT Kilpatrick) is due for release in September on ABC Classics
SAT
SAT Susan Graham
SAT
SAT Born in New Mexico and raised in Texas, mezzo-soprano
SAT Susan Graham has sung leading roles in the great opera
SAT houses of the world, covering repertoire from the 17th to
SAT 20th centuries. Winning critical acclaim for her
SAT performance of both the core operatic repertoire and new
SAT works by contemporary composers such as Tobias Picker, it
SAT is for her interpretation of French music that Graham is
SAT most celebrated.
SAT
SAT Ahead of two performances at the Proms, she talks to
SAT Petroc from New York about her passion for French music
SAT - which started with the piano music - and about her
SAT new found respect for Michael Jackson and the need for
SAT cultural ambassadors in today's society.

SAT Susan Graham sings at the BBC Proms (both concerts
SAT broadcast live on Radio 3):

SAT Braille Music
SAT
SAT Louise Braille was born 200 years ago just outside Paris,
SAT and was blinded as a result of an accident in his
SAT father's workshop. He then spent much of his life
SAT devising the system of raised cells widely used around the
SAT world today for the translation of books and public signs.
SAT Braille music is less well known than its literary cousin,
SAT but it can be a lifeline to many blind musicians, from
SAT beginner to professional - and advances in technology
SAT are changing the way Braille music is translated, edited
SAT and made available.
SAT
SAT Lutenist Matthew Wadsworth, who has been blind since
SAT birth, tells Petroc how crucial Braille music has been for
SAT his career, and in the company of music officer James
SAT Risdon, Petroc visits the RNIB's translation and
SAT printing services in Peterborough to find out about the
SAT process of translating a musical score into Braille.

SAT elements of Spanish guitar and African traditions. The
SAT songs are played on instruments such as the marimbula
SAT thumb piano, the tres (a kind of three-stringed guitar),
SAT and an array of percussion including the guiro, maracas
SAT and bongos.
SAT
SAT Lucy is also joined in the studio by Sue Steward and

SAT Britten's Peter Grimes
SAT The final offering from Opera on 3 before the Proms, this

SAT unconventional but powerful take on Britten's music drama,
SAT set at the time of its premiere - postwar Britain.
SAT
SAT The cast that inspired this adulation included Amanda
SAT Roocroft as Ellen Orford, Gerald Finley as Captain
SAT Balstrode and Australian tenor Stuart Skelton in the epic
SAT title role - a compelling interpretation of the
SAT misunderstood outsider, victim of his own weaknesses and
SAT contradictions, at once unstable and unpredictable,
SAT visionary and violent.

SUN The Soft Machine
SUN
SUN Nothing is at once so familiar and yet so strange as the
SUN body. For most of the time this soft machine we inhabit is
SUN invisible, weightless even, but the slightest turbulence
SUN serves as an intimation of mortality. Suddenly we feel the
SUN pull of gravity ...the burden and bounty of being
SUN human...and of course we sing and write about it. Words
SUN and Music this week takes its cue from this moment...the
SUN moment when fleshy mechanics and consciousness seem to
SUN collide or separate....when the fifty trillion cells from
SUN which each of us is apparently composed fall into novel,
SUN self aware shapes. The programme is about the human body
SUN when it emerges from the shadows. As you might expect it
SUN begins with an overture - Walt Whitman's 'I Sing the
SUN Body Electric' and hauls itself up from all fours until
SUN its features are, I hope, all too recognisably
SUN human...from Tchaikovsky's tip-toeing Sugar-Plum Fairy
SUN to Alvin Lucier's journey into the brain's inner
SUN space..... from pas de deux to double helix and yet with
SUN still enough time to catch the warm, scented pulse of a
SUN princess. If you hear voices they will probably be the
SUN actors Anna Maxwell Martin and John Rowe breathing life
SUN into the words of Ezra Pound, Vicki Feaver and W.H.Auden
SUN amongst others; if its sounds and sweet airs then the
SUN culprits are likely to be Handel, Beethoven or Charlie
SUN Mingus...in other words the surprise of recognition and
SUN the shock of the new.

MON Jonathan Harvey (1939-), Episode 1
MON Donald Macleod is in the company of British composer
MON Jonathan Harvey, a fastidious craftsman whose works are
MON very much music of integration, often bringing together
MON different worlds: cutting-edge electronics and traditional
MON instruments, past and present, material and ethereal.
MON
MON Harvey is singularly thoughtful about his own art and the
MON process by which he makes it, but he is not a composer
MON with his head in the clouds - he is very much hands-on
MON when it comes to computer technology and electronics, and
MON how they can be harnessed to open up new worlds of the
MON imagination.
MON
MON He is a composer whose work encompasses the realms of
MON bliss as well as the practicalities and imperfections of
MON the world of real instruments and earthly musicians. In an
MON interview some time ago, he asked himself what the purpose
MON of music is: 'It is, in my view, to reveal the nature of
MON suffering and to heal - the one big question of existence.'
MON
MON Including a hymn to Angels (an abiding interest of
MON Harvey's, and he is often conscious of their presence in
MON everyday life), and the now-classic electronic work
MON Mortuos Plango, Vivos Voco, whose two main sonic
MON components are the great tenor bell of Winchester
MON Cathedral and the treble voice of Harvey's own son Dominic
MON (who was a Winchester chorister in the late 1970s). Plus a
MON pair of viola pieces that evoke the image of a remote
MON Tibetan monastery; and Song Offerings, a magical
MON song-cycle set to the words of Rabindranath Tagore, and
MON one of the composer's most beautiful and accessible works.

MON Antichrist/Harvey Klehr/Desperate Romantics/Shaw and
MON Priestley/Margot Fonteyn
MON Matthew Sweet and critic Emilie Bickerton review Lars von
MON Trier's latest film, Antichrist, starring Willem Dafoe and
MON Charlotte Gainsbourg. It has stirred up controversy
MON because of its explicit depiction of sex and sexual
MON violence.
MON
MON Harvey Klehr, the co-author of Spies: The Rise and Fall of
MON the KGB in America, believes his new book - which has
MON sparked controversy in the USA - provides the most
MON complete account yet of Soviet espionage in the states
MON during the 1930s and 40s. It offers the last word on many
MON leading figures of the time who were under suspicion
MON including J Robert Oppenheimer and Ernest Hemingway.
MON Author Don Guttenplan joins the discussion to question
MON some of the findings.
MON
MON Screenwriter Peter Bowker discusses his latest television
MON drama, Desperate Romantics, which chronicles the
MON adventures of three men who created one of Britain's most
MON important art movements: the self-styled 'Pre-Raphaelite
MON Brotherhood'.
MON
MON They were the social commentators of their time, who
MON strongly believed that writing could bring about real
MON change, but George Bernard Shaw and JB Priestley seem to
MON have fallen out of fashion in recent times. Matthew asks
MON Roy Hattersley and Michael Billington whether such casual
MON neglect is warranted and who, if pushed, they would choose
MON to champion as the more vital writer.
MON
MON And in the first of a series of conversations about great
MON artists with particular blind spots in their abilities,
MON dance critic Deborah Craine explains how Margot Fonteyn's
MON difficulties with the showiest step in ballet - 32
MON fourette turns - would have kept her out of the ballet

TUE century to the present day. This concert features music by
TUE Johan Helmich Roman, the 'father of Swedish music' and an
TUE important figure in 18th-century Sweden, as well as music
TUE for strings by Grieg, Sibelius and Nielsen. To round off,
TUE they perform the London premiere of Lindberg's own
TUE Kundraan for trombone and strings - a piece of musical
TUE theatre where the antihero Kundraan meets Lucifer.

TUE A New Age of Austerity?
TUE Philip Dodd is joined by a round-table of political
TUE thinkers, cultural commentators and historians to discuss
TUE the possibilities of a new austerity.
TUE
TUE With public sector cuts almost a certainty and renewed
TUE thrift in MPs and high-flying public servants already in
TUE evidence, Philip Dodd and guests consider the
TUE possibilities that a new period of austerity is about to
TUE begin. How will our politics, culture and society look in
TUE a more austere Britain?
TUE
TUE David Cameron explicitly committed himself to a new
TUE politics of austerity at the Conservatives Spring
TUE Conference in early 2009. But after decades of celebration
TUE of go-getting consumerism, do we even understand austerity
TUE anymore? It's a word more easily associated with post-war
TUE Atlee governments, miserable freezing weather and ration
TUE books.
TUE
TUE And it's more profound than just skipping the odd holiday,
TUE eating out less and other frequently cited changes in
TUE behaviour since the recession began. Austerity is a
TUE culture of plainness, economy, severity and starkness. It
TUE implies asceticism, rigidity, abstinence, self-discipline
TUE - even Puritanism. Is this the world which we are headed
TUE towards? And can such austerity ever be a thing of beauty?

WED
WED The orchestra learns to speak in one of Harvey's most
WED ambitious and complex works to date - Speakings, which was
WED premiered at the BBC Proms 2008. As the composer himself
WED explains it: 'The orchestral discourse, itself inflected
WED by speech structures, is electro-acoustically shaped by
WED the envelopes of speech taken from largely random
WED recordings. The vowel and consonant spectra-shapes flicker
WED in the rapid rhythms and colours of speech across the
WED orchestral textures. A process of 'shape vocoding', taking
WED advantage of speech's fascinating complexities, is the
WED main idea of this work.'

THU Jonathan Harvey (1939-), Episode 4
THU Donald Macleod is in the company of British composer
THU Jonathan Harvey.
THU
THU The theme of nature runs through the programme - trees
THU form the backdrop to Moving Trees, a ravishing short piece
THU for chamber ensemble written in response to a commission
THU from Belgian choreographer Anna Teresa de Keersmaeker.
THU
THU Birds crop up - first, in Chu (Tibetan for 'bird'), then
THU in Bird Concerto with Pianosong, which began life as Piano
THU Concerto with Birdsong until Harvey realised that the
THU birds were the main protagonists. The birds in this case
THU are synthesized ones from California, and they transform,
THU morph and interact with the orchestra in extraordinary
THU ways.

THU Rana Mitter talks to Booker prize-winner Aravind Adiga
THU about his book Between the Assassinations, and to Hanif
THU Kureishi as his novel The Black Album opens as a play at
THU the National Theatre.
THU
THU On India's south-western coast, between Goa and Calicut,
THU lies Kittur - a small, nondescript everytown. Aravind
THU Adiga acts as our guide to the town, mapping overlapping
THU lives of Kittur's residents. What emerges is the moral
THU biography of an Indian town and a group portrait of
THU ordinary Indians in a time of extraordinary
THU transformation, over the seven-year period between the
THU assassinations of prime ministers Indira Gandhi and her
THU son Rajiv.
THU
THU Kureishi's story, The Black Album, is the story of an
THU intellectually curious British Pakistani boy and of the
THU tensions and confusions of finding his identity against a
THU backdrop of racial violence, Thatcherite London and the
THU fatwa against Salman Rushdie.

FRI Moving Pianos
FRI A behind-the-scenes peek at the process of moving pianos
FRI onto the stage of the Royal Albert Hall during the BBC
FRI Proms - and what can go wrong.
FRI
FRI A Victorian building, live broadcasts, large audiences,
FRI hot television lights, world-class performers and
FRI instruments each worth in the region of 100,000 pounds all
FRI add to the pressure on the team moving multiple pianos at
FRI the Proms. Various people involved in the extensive
FRI preparations that hopefully ensure a glitch-free night
FRI share the secrets of their trade.
FRI
FRI Nothing fazes Julian Rout, the specialist piano removal
FRI company that moves 15,000 pianos each year. But Proms
FRI co-ordinator at the Royal Albert Hall Jacqui Kelly is
FRI having sleepless nights despite the minute-by-minute plans
FRI she has been making.
FRI
FRI Ulrich Gerhartz deals with the challenge of matching and
FRI preparing four pianos and ensuring that they stay in top
FRI condition throughout the Proms season - but even when he
FRI turns up at the Royal Albert Hall for a quiet session at
FRI dawn, he finds a cohort of vacuum cleaners already hard at
FRI work.
