We find out why SAT Agostino Steffani's baroque opera Niobe, Regina di Tebe is SAT only just receiving its UK premiere at the Royal Opera House SAT after being neglected for 320 years. And the charismatic SAT harpsichordist and conductor Richard Egarr with everything SAT you need to know about the huge, sprawling dynasty that was SAT the Bach family. SAT SAT Crisis at Scottish Opera? SAT SAT To launch our new season Music Matters reports on recent SAT events at Scottish Opera. Due to the financial pressures SAT facing the company the management have been in negotiations SAT with the Musicians Union regarding the ‘under-utilised’ SAT orchestra. This week the players voted narrowly in favour of SAT becoming part time employees. SAT SAT Tom talks to Scottish Opera’s General Director, Alex SAT Reedijk, and the Glasgow Herald’s Michael Tumelty about what SAT this means for the future of the company. SAT SAT The Bach Dynasty SAT SAT History’s most important musical family – the Bachs – SAT dominated German musical life for almost 300 years. Though SAT Johann Sebastian is the undisputed giant of the dynasty, his SAT ancestors were renowned in their time as instrumental SAT players, church organists, instrument makers and composers. SAT Such was the family’s reputation that when, in 1693, a SAT musical vacancy occurred at the court in Arnstadt, the court SAT called urgently for ‘a Bach’. Johann Sebastian’s many SAT children maintained the family traditions. SAT SAT Conductor and harpsichordist Richard Egarr talks to Tom SAT about the significance of this great dynasty and his plans SAT to highlight the music of JS Bach’s predecessors and progeny SAT with the Academy of Ancient Music. SAT SAT Niobe, Regina Di Tebe SAT SAT Italian composer Agostino Steffani was widely acclaimed in SAT his own day and admired by his contemporaries including SAT Handel. First performed in Munich in 1688, his opera Niobe, SAT Regina Di Tebe remained neglected until 2008, when it was SAT staged at the Schwetzingen Festival. The piece tells the SAT story of the mythological Niobe, who scandalises the gods by SAT saying her offspring are worth more than the deities’; her SAT children are slain, and she turns to stone with grief. The SAT libretto adds subplots of intrigue, love and lust, which SAT paint a picture of Niobe as more monster than victim. SAT SAT Tom visits rehearsals for the UK premiere at the Royal Opera SAT House and meets conductor Thomas Hengelbrock, director Lukas SAT Hemleb, and Niobe herself, Veronique Gens. SAT SAT Nino Rota SAT SAT One of the most successful film composers of all time, Nino SAT Rota scored some of the greatest films of the twentieth SAT century - Fellini’s La Dolce Vita, Francis Ford Coppola’s SAT first two Godfather films, and Zeffirelli’s Romeo and SAT Juliet. Steeped in classical music (he was Director of the SAT Bari Conservatory of Music for most of his life), he drew SAT also on a vast range of popular, traditional, jazz and folk SAT styles in his scores. SAT SAT Tom is joined by writer Richard Dyer, film composer Miguel SAT Mera and Bruno Moretti, Rota’s last student, to discuss why SAT his music is still among the best ever written for cinema. SAT SAT Shardad Rohani SAT SAT Iranian Shardad Rohani is guest conductor with the Tehran SAT Symphony Orchestra - an ensemble with a rich distant past, a SAT tortuous recent history (classical music was banned after SAT the revolution in 1979), a complex present, and a hopeful SAT future. SAT SAT Shardad talks to Tom about the popularity of classical music SAT in Iran and his hopes for the future of the Tehran Symphony SAT Orchestra. Presented by Sean SAT Rafferty. Violinist Alina Ibragimova and pianist Cedric SAT Tiberghien perform 2 works written just 10 years apart but SAT by composers of different generations - Brahms and Richard SAT Strauss. SAT SAT Both Alina Ibragimova and Cedric Tiberghien are past BBC New SAT Generation Artists and since their time on the scheme have SAT been very successful, both on their own and together as a SAT chamber music partnership - their recording of Szymanowski's SAT music for violin and piano was one of the highlight discs of SAT 2009, and earlier this year they recorded Beethoven's SAT Sonatas on the Wigmore Hall's own label. SAT SAT Brahms: Violin Sonata No.1 in G major (Op.78) SAT SAT Strauss: Violin Sonata in E flat (Op.18). This SUN concert attempts the impossible: to reconstruct the sound of SUN a colonial fiesta, in this case the Fest of Our Lady of SUN Guadelupe, in the city of La Plata (also called Chuquisaca, SUN and now known as Sucre, in Bolivia). SUN SUN The Latin American fiesta was, and remains the meeting-point SUN par excellence of a variety of cultures, practices, SUN expressions and people. It takes place under the guise of a SUN religious celebration, but it is open to other kinds of SUN expression and sometimes generates cultural tensions and SUN contradictions. The openness of the fiesta blurs the SUN boundaries between sacred and profane, individual and SUN collective, and momentarily lifts social and moral barriers. SUN In other words, the fiesta creates a space and a time that SUN are qualitatively distinct. Much that is impossible in SUN everyday life may become a reality during the fiesta. SUN SUN By the 18th Century, the Guadelupe festivities lasted for SUN ten days and included a striking succession of events of SUN various kinds. On the eve of the feast, the picture of Our SUN Lady of Guadelupe was removed from its chapel and brought SUN into the cathedral, where it remained until the end of the SUN celebrations. For the next ten days, Masses were said almost SUN without interruption all through the morning and daily Salve SUN services were sung in the afternoon. The latter consisted of SUN a Latin or bilingual Salve Regina, the Litany of Loretom and SUN sometimes also a motet of villancico. This concert comprises SUN four of these services, all of which present one or two SUN large pieces by the composer Roque Jacinto de Chavarria, as SUN well as smaller motets or villancicos. The first movement, Mars, the Bringer SUN of War, was conceived in 1914, just before the outbreak of SUN World War I, almost forseeing rather than reacting to war. SUN The work was forward looking in many ways - Holst scored the SUN work for a huge orchestra, creating extraordinary sounds and SUN colours from this vast orchestral palette, and each movement SUN has strikingly original characteristics. Stephen Johnson is SUN joined by an expanded BBC National Orchestra of Wales, SUN conducted by David Atherton, who perform extracts and a SUN complete performance of this monumental work. Williams, SUN with Samuel West as Faust, Toby Jones as Mephistopheles, SUN Anna Maxwell Martin as Gretchen and Derek Jacobi as The SUN Lord. Adapted and directed by David Timson, with music SUN composed by Roger Marsh. SUN SUN Goethe's Faust, one of the pillars of Western literature, is SUN presented in a dramatisation by David Timson. In Part 1, SUN following an agreement between Mephistopheles and The Lord, SUN the scholar Faust is tempted into a contract with the Devil. SUN His life is changed and he plunges into the enjoyment of SUN sensuality until his emotions are stirred by a meeting with SUN Gretchen, leading to a tragic outcome. Part 2, written much SUN later in Goethe's life, presents a series of episodic scenes SUN in which the poet places his eponymous hero in a variety of SUN surprising circumstances reflecting the predicament of SUN humanity. Funny, reflective and moving, this dramatisation SUN shows why Goethe's Faust had such a massive influence on SUN Western culture. SUN SUN Faust ..... Samuel West SUN Mephistopheles .....
