Plus the book A History of SAT Opera: The Last 400 Years reviewed. SAT SAT A History of Opera – The Last 400 Years SAT A History of Opera – The Last 400 Years is a new book by SAT Carolyn Abbate and Roger Parker in which they set out to SAT tell the entire story of the world's most extraordinary SAT artistic medium of the last four hundred years. Opera paints SAT the human passions with astonishing power and drama. This SAT book, (the first new, full-length, single-volume history of SAT opera for more than a generation) hopes to provoke in-depth SAT discussions of many works by the greatest opera composers, SAT from Monteverdi, Handel and Mozart, to Verdi and Wagner, to SAT Strauss, Puccini, Berg, and Britten. Tom Service meets the SAT authors and learns about the books lively discussions of SAT opera's development through the centuries. Abbate and Parker SAT talk about the problems that opera has faced in the last SAT half century, when new works - which were once opera's SAT life-blood - have shrunk to a tiny minority and have largely SAT failed to find a permanent place in the repertoire. Tom then SAT finds out what the tenor Ian Bostridge and opera historian SAT Sarah Lenton think about the book. SAT SAT Calixto Bieito SAT For many the operatic productions of Spanish director SAT Calixto Bieito are a byword in sensual excess, cultural SAT criticism, and, for some, the nadir of what happens if you SAT allow a director free rein over Mozart, Verdi, Wagner et al. SAT Nudity, simulated sex, rows of toilets, have become SAT trademarks of a Bieito production. But his defenders say SAT that what his riotous productions do is create new meanings SAT that help sustain the cultural mausoleums of our opera SAT houses. Tom met Calixto Bieto during rehearsals for his SAT production of Carmen which is about to open at English SAT National Opera and found him to be one of the most SAT fearlessly, restlessly, even recklessly creative people SAT working in opera today, whose mind works just as mercurially SAT and vividly as his visions of Bizet or Verdi. SAT SAT Meredith Monk at 70 SAT The American composer and performer Meredith Monk turns SAT seventy on Tuesday Her practice flows from and is rooted in SAT her voice: Monk's work with movement, dance, theatre, SAT ritual, lighting and instrumental music all comes from the SAT modern yet mythical use of her extraordinary voice, still as SAT strong and resonant as ever. Tom talks to Meredith Monk SAT about her work which was born in the avant-garde of New York SAT in the 60s and 70s, but instead of the fragmentation and SAT deconstruction that so many of her colleagues were up to, SAT Monk’s work was all about putting things together, about SAT making a multi-faceted art-form in pieces like Dolmen Music, SAT Epic, Atlas, or as in one of her recent projects, Songs of SAT Ascension, that is as indebted to Zen as it is to American SAT experimentalism. Above all, her music is direct, mysterious SAT and absolutely unlike anyone else's. SAT SAT 13:00 The Early Music Show b01nwbtw (Listen) SAT Performer Profile: Benjamin Bagby SAT SAT Catherine Bott talks to the vocalist, harpist and scholar, SAT Benjamin Bagby, about his career that has spanned more than SAT 30 years. SUN SUN The act of rocking a child to sleep with a gentle tune is SUN one of our most simple and natural forms of music-making. SUN They are common to all cultures and ages, and though they SUN are varied, they all share remarkable similarities. Their SUN words are soothing, using onomatopoeic and nonsense sounds, SUN like the 'ninna nanna' of Italy and the English 'lulla SUN lulla'. SUN SUN Often these lullabies are passed down from generation to SUN generation and are known throughout regions and countries. SUN But they are also transformed by this oral transmission. SUN Many look outward to nocturnal themes, or to daily chores SUN and the baby itself. SUN SUN Religious themes are also widespread. By its very nature, SUN the lullaby has a certain gentle spirituality and its SUN serenity is particularly suited to the Nativity. It reminds SUN us of Mary's pure devotion to the baby Jesus, her gentle SUN care and the universality of this particular kind of SUN miracle. Many Christmas carols incorporate gentle rocking SUN rhythms, simple structures, repetitive motifs or common SUN phrases, like the 'Lully Lullay' of the well-known Coventry SUN Carol. Many were also well-known secular tunes that were SUN given devotional subjects in an attempt to lead audiences SUN away from profane subjects. Others depict holy figures in SUN easily-recognised scenes from daily life - Joseph rocking SUN the cradle or Mary washing nappies. SUN SUN In ‘The Winter’s Tale’ roguish peddler Autolycus sells his SUN wares - a range of female paraphernalia from perfume to SUN linen, and bracelets to gloves - tapping into a market still SUN buoyant today – men buying gifts to keep women happy. We SUN fast forward from 17th-century Sicily to 19th-century middle SUN England and discover in the town of ‘Cranford’ a rather SUN sniffy attitude to the very idea of trade, when a certain SUN class of society would have as little to do with the SUN profession as possible. Smetana’s opera ‘The Bartered Bride’ SUN tells the story of Marenka whose lover Jeník is paid off by SUN a scheming marriage broker and accepts 300 florins to give SUN her up. Unsurprisingly as it’s a comic opera all is not as SUN it seems, and their story ends happily. The same can’t be SUN said for another bartered bride, Susan Henchard in ‘The SUN Mayor of Casterbridge’, who is heartlessly auctioned off by SUN her drunken husband at a country fair. A reminder that SUN throughout history even human lives have been traded and SUN sold. SUN SUN City trading has surely been one of the most vilified forms SUN of transaction in recent years and yet it remains central to SUN the 21st-century global economy. Dublin-born investment SUN banker turned writer Aifric Campbell’s novel ‘On the Floor’ SUN is set in the financial markets of London and Hong Kong and SUN tells the story of 28-year-old Geri Molloy, who finds SUN herself caught up in a deal that will put her career on the SUN line. As the markets pulse with Steve Reich’s ‘Music for 18 SUN Musicians’ we relocate to Stravinsky’s portrayal of the SUN Russian carnival Maslenitsa (‘Shrovetide Fair’), the last SUN chance to purchase blinis and other treats before the SUN privations of Lent. Sir Harrison Birtwistle’s brief but SUN playful ‘Chorale from a Toy Shop’ (albeit a rather creepy SUN sounding one) was dedicated to Stravinsky on the occasion of SUN his 85th birthday and sets the tone perfectly for Raquel’s SUN fantastic interpretation of ‘The Pardoner’s Tale’. When she SUN came into the studio she told me she’d been inspired by a SUN description of him as a ‘eunachy goat’ – a great depiction SUN of his fraudulent and hypocritical selling of so called SUN pardons. SUN SUN The term ‘Trade Winds’ was initially a purely meteorological SUN term, but by the 18th century it had become associated with SUN foreign commerce due to the significance of the easterly SUN winds to England’s merchant fleet crossing the Atlantic. SUN Both Frederick Keel and Ronald Binge evoke produce laden SUN galleons at sea. SUN SUN Literature is full of life-changing transactions but my SUN personal favourite is the moment a single SUN Whipple-Scrumptious Fudge-Mallow Delight opens up the world SUN of Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory to poor little Charlie SUN Bucket. I couldn’t resist including the voice of the SUN original eccentric and sinister Wonka, Gene Wilder. In SUN Madame Bovary’s instance it’s not so much a single SUN transaction that alters her life, but an increasingly lavish SUN series of them at the hands of manipulative shopkeeper SUN Monsieur Lheureux. We meet her first when she still has some SUN self-control and is able on this occasion to say thanks but SUN no thanks. The seeds of her downfall however are planted SUN months earlier not with a single purchase but a single SUN social event, a ball given by local aristocrat the Marquis SUN d'Andervilliers where her head is filled with a desire for SUN the finer things (and people) in life. Here it is conjured SUN up by Berlioz’s famous bal from the colourful ‘Symphonie SUN Fantastique’. SUN SUN From 19th-century French boutique owners to the somewhat SUN more soulless environment many of us shop in today – the SUN shopping centre. ‘What Was Lost’ is the 2007 debut novel of SUN Catherine O’Flynn, who found inspiration for it whilst SUN working in a record shop in the Merry Hill Centre in the SUN West Midlands. In it a child goes missing – here she is SUN spotted on the CCTV by an unassuming night shift security SUN man whose heart starts beating harder to Mike Oldfield’s SUN Tubular Bells, forever made that bit more sinister by its SUN presence in the soundtrack to ‘The Exorcist’. SUN SUN In putting together this programme I couldn’t exclude the SUN often overlooked genre of Chick Lit. In Sophie Kinsella’s SUN ‘Shopaholic’ Becky Bloomwood is a modern day Madame Bovary – SUN a compulsive spender who just can’t stop shopping – much SUN like that other icon of shoe related indulgence, Carrie SUN Bradshaw from ‘Sex in the City’ … Raquel’s reading of Becky SUN opening her VISA bill practically gave me flashbacks to my SUN own early twenties VISA card nightmare! Via Ketelby’s SUN ‘Persian Market’ we come next to Istanbul in the 1970s and SUN Orhan Pamuk’s young protagonist Kemal, whose life is forever SUN changed on entering a boutique to buy his fiancée a gift. He SUN falls in love instantly with shop girl Füsun, which leads to SUN the unravelling of his entire existence and results in him SUN drinking a LOT of raki. Arnold Bax’s ‘In A Vodka Shop’ is a SUN pianistic image of that other often compulsive drain on our SUN finances … alcohol. SUN SUN Amy Lowell’s poem ‘Market Day’ evokes the heart of a small SUN New England town and, via the local church organ, leads us SUN to another devastating transaction, that of Judas and the SUN thirty pieces of silver with which he betrayed Christ. To SUN me, Phil’s reading quietly conveys the intensity of Judas’s SUN grief and remorse, reflected in Haydn’s ‘Seven Last Words of SUN our Saviour on the Cross’. We close with the final encounter SUN between Emma Bovary and Lheureux who now shows his true SUN colours showing no remorse for her debt ridden predicament. SUN By now her fate is sealed – perhaps in the conclusion to SUN ‘Symphonie Fantastique’, where the protagonist sees spectres SUN and sorcerers at his own funeral – we can hear Emma’s own SUN imminent demise. A lesson to us all to think before we shop. SUN SUN With thanks to Raquel Cassidy and Phil Davis.
