As part of the BBC's Sound of SAT Cinema season, Music Matters this week includes an interview SAT with the Polish film composer Zbigniew Preisner, whose SAT collaborations with the director Krzysztof Kieslowski on SAT films such as Dekalog, The Double Life Of Veronique and The SAT Three Colours Trliogy brought him international acclaim. SAT Preisner's latest work, 'Diaries of Hope', premieres in SAT London in October. And Tom is joined by the historian Mervyn SAT Cooke and composer Jocelyn Pook to discuss the challenges SAT facing classical composers in the film industry. SAT SAT Zbigniew Preisner SAT SAT Regarded as Poland’s leading film composer Zbigniew Preisner SAT is best known for his collaborations with the director SAT Krzysztof Kieslowski – including the Three Colours Trilogy ( SAT Three Colours Blue, Three Colours White and Three Colours SAT Red), the visionary 10-part series for Polish Television SAT Dekalog and The Double Life Of Veronique. SAT SAT Tom Service speaks to Preisner about the coincidences which SAT have defined his career, his close relationship with SAT Kieslowski, and his controversial view that the profession SAT of the film composer is in its final years. SAT SAT Britten the film composer SAT SAT Benjamin Britten became a member of the General Post Office SAT (GPO) film unit in 1935, aged 21. Britten worked for the SAT unit on short documentaries promoting the GPO’s activities, SAT including his first collaborations with the poet WH Auden on SAT films as Night Mail and Coal Face. SAT SAT The composer Colin Matthews (Music Director of the SAT Britten-Pears Foundation) tells the story of how a young SAT Britten became involved in music for screen, and of his SAT experimentation both with music and with the recording of SAT sound effects for the films. SAT SAT The National Film and Television School SAT SAT With four permanent departments - production, camera, SAT editing and sound - the National Film School (as it was SAT first named) opened in 1971 on the site of the Beaconsfield SAT Film Studios in Buckinghamshire, the historic home to silent SAT movies of the 1920s, and the likely meeting place for SAT Britten and the GPO’s Alberto Cavalcanti. SAT SAT Earlier this week Tom went to the NFTS to meet Dean SAT Humphreys, head of Post-Production, Chris Auty, head of SAT Production, and three student composers (David Pearce, SAT Lyndon Holland and Arran Price), and discovered a unique SAT approach which sees students from all disciplines SAT continuously collaborating on film projects in an SAT environment akin to the early Hollywood studios. SAT SAT Film Music: A discussion. SAT SAT The film music historian Mervyn Cooke and composer Jocelyn SAT Pook (Brick Lane, Eyes Wide Shut) join Tom to talk about SAT changing trends in film music - setting Britten’s approach SAT in the context of other British composers of his generation SAT like Ralph Vaughan Williams and William Walton, discussing SAT the dangers of the industry standard temp track, and giving SAT their opinions on the current and future state of music for SAT the big screen. SAT SAT 13:00 The Early Music Show b03bfdk7 (Listen) SAT Sound of Cinema: Farinelli - The Movie SAT SAT As part of the Sound of Cinema season, Catherine Bott looks SAT at the story and the soundtrack of the 1994 film "Farinelli" SAT - a biopic of the great 18th century castrato and his SAT colourful relationships with women, with his older brother SAT and with the composers Handel and Porpora. SAT SAT It's been a long time since we had a real life castrato SAT singer in our midst, and the only recording we have of one SAT is Alessandro Moreschi, who died in 1922 and was already at SAT the end of his performing career when the rather primitive SAT recordings were made. No-one today really possesses the SAT vocal range of a castrato ? which could be as much as three SAT and a half octaves, so, when Belgian film director Gerard SAT Corbiau decided to turn Farinelli's colourful life into a SAT full-length biopic, he charged music director Christophe SAT Rousset with coming up with a way to create as near to the SAT castrato sound as he could. SAT SAT The solution was to combine the voices of Polish soprano Ewa SAT Mallas-Godlewska and American countertenor Derek Lee Ragin, SAT so that Derek would sing the lower passages and Ewa the SAT highest. During the precision editing, the voices of the two SAT singers were relayed, from the notes to the highest, in SAT order to cover the tessitura and also demonstrate the SAT castrato's virtuosity. The resulting tape included nearly SAT 3000 editing points. It was then necessary to "homogenise" SAT the two singers' timbres in order to give Farinelli his own SAT voice, both new and, at the same time, respectful of the SAT original voices. SAT SAT The film soundtrack includes performances by the "combined" SAT voices with Christophe Rousset's own ensemble Les Talens SAT Lyriques, in glorious music by Handel, Porpora, Hasse, SAT Pergolesi and Farinelli's own older brother (and protagonist SAT of the film), Riccardo Broschi. Ken Hollings considers their act SAT of creation and wonders if the Monster from the Id can ever SAT be re-awakened? SAT SAT Forbidden Planet was M.G.M.'s lavish leap into science SAT fiction. Fusing Shakespeare's Tempest, pop Freud and pulp SAT SF. Fleetingly Hollywood and the electronic avant-garde SAT embraced to make unworldly music inspired by the new science SAT of cybernetics. The Barrons were close associates of John SAT Cage and at the cutting edge of new technology and music. SAT Their "electronic tonalities", as credited on screen in SAT deference to an anxious musicians union, were groundbreaking SAT for both experimental music film scoring. SAT SAT In the cramped space of their Greenwich village apartment SAT the Barron's poured current through home made circuits made SAT up of valves, oscillators and wires. Music, sound effects SAT and character were all arrived at by wiring, art and sweat. SAT The roaring Monster from the Id, the bubbling sounds of SAT Planet Altair IV and the vast caverns of glowing, ancient SAT Krell technology. Even the Krell music, anthem to a long SAT dead race of technologically advanced beings. SAT SAT Audiences and filmmakers were startled by this great musical SAT experiment. It remains one of the most perfect fusions of SAT film and music, defining the way we thought the future would SAT sound. In rare recordings Bebe and Louis Barron relate their SAT adventures in sound.
