He asks her whether she SAT has a conscious mission to re-cast the role of the classical SAT soloist in the 21st century. Petroc also explores SAT Schoenberg's 'fragmentary masterpiece', his opera Moses und SAT Aron, which tells the story of two brothers struggling with SAT their divine mission. Welsh National Opera are mounting a SAT new production of the piece, directed by Jossi Wieler and SAT Sergio Morabito and starring Sir John Tomlinson as Moses. SAT Plus, a look at the history of the pioneering record label SAT Nonesuch, which started as a budget classical label in 1964 SAT but was soon at the forefront of contemporary classical SAT music, with artists like John Adams, Steve Reich, Kronos SAT Quartet and Philip Glass all signed as Nonesuch artists. SAT SAT Nonesuch Records celebrate 50 years SAT SAT Founded as a budget classical record label in 1964 by Jac SAT Holzman, head of the then-independent Elektra Records, SAT Nonesuch Records has grown over the last five decades to SAT pursue a broad mission, including classical music, SAT contemporary music, jazz, traditional American and world SAT music, popular and alternative music, musical theatre and SAT dance. In a business filled with constant change, its SAT leadership has been remarkably stable: two peoplethe late SAT Tracey Sterne and, since 1984, Bob Hurwitzhave been at the SAT helm for 43 of those 48 years. The label has always been at SAT the forefront of contemporary classical music during both SAT the Sterne (George Crumb, Elliott Carter, William Bolcom) SAT and Hurwitz (John Adams, Steve Reich, Kronos Quartet, Philip SAT Glass, Louis Andriessen, Frederic Rzewski, Henryk Górecki) SAT eras. SAT SAT Moses und Aron SAT SAT As Schoenberg’s operatic setting of the biblical story of SAT Moses und Aron is about to be staged by Welsh National SAT Opera, the production’s co-director Sergio Morabito, SAT conductor Lothar Koenigs and the two principal singers – Sir SAT John Tomlinson (Moses) and Rainer Trost (Aron) give an SAT insight into this rarely performed work – regarded as SAT Schoenberg’s “fragmentary masterpiece”. Although billed as SAT an opera in three acts (with a libretto by the composer SAT himself) Schoenberg only composed the first two acts. It’s SAT regarded as the most challenging piece in the repertoire for SAT an operatic chorus - WNO have spent almost 18 months SAT learning it – and the role of Moses is written in SAT “sprechgesang” – half spoken half sung. SAT SAT Hilary Hahn SAT SAT Thirty years ago Hilary Hahn had her first violin lesson. SAT Now, at the age of 34, she plays to audiences around the SAT world and by the end of June this season will have performed SAT in nearly fifty cities in fourteen countries throughout SAT North America, Europe and Asia. SAT SAT Hahn is a commissioner of new music and in her latest CD “In SAT 27 Pieces” she asked twenty-six composers from around the SAT world to write short-form works. For the final encore she SAT held an open contest that drew more than 400 entries. SAT SAT Hilary Hahn joined Petroc Trelawny in the studio on a visit SAT to London earlier this month to talk about reviving the SAT encore and artistic freedom. SAT SAT SAT The future of classical music in the digital age. SUN Astar Artes MWLDAN SUN SUN Juan Carlos Jaramillo (producer) SUN SUN 18:45 Sunday Feature b043p4wn (Listen) SUN Per Petterson SUN SUN Profile of the leading writer in Scandinavia and one of the SUN top contenders for the Nobel Prize. Recorded on location in SUN Oslo, Norway, and Petterson's writing hut in the country. SUN SUN Petterson's novel 'Out Stealing Horses' has won many awards SUN including the 2007 IMPAC Literary Award. It is the best SUN selling work of Scandinavian fiction (leaving aside crime) SUN in the last fifty years. Petterson is a writer who has SUN suffered tragedy in his life: both parents and one of his SUN brothers were killed in a ferry fire in 1990. SUN SUN Paul Binding, the author of a study of Ibsen, admires SUN Petterson "for his eschewal of the artificial or fashionable SUN ways of fiction. He doesn't seem tempted to go down any SUN route but the one his theme demands. I suspect that he has SUN always harboured feelings of being unlike other people, and SUN that the ferry accident must have enforced the sense of SUN having a lonely race to run.' SUN SUN His books tell us - from his own experience - that the SUN dreadful does happen, and to people we love and are close SUN to, but that our respect for them and their lives and our SUN love for other people (and too for ourselves) can and does SUN carry us through. His exploration of that lonely race has SUN made him able to portray one-to-one relationships, SUN particularly the familial, more strongly and honestly than SUN any living writer. SUN SUN At the heart of the documentary is Petterson's uneasy SUN relationship with his mother which because of her sudden SUN death he was never able to resolve. We also touch upon the SUN nature of fictionalised personal narrative and the blurred SUN lines between 'making things up' and imagining what 'could SUN have' happened in life. TUE TUE 22:45 The Essay b043q23s (Listen) TUE The Meaning of Trees, Series 2, Hawthorn TUE TUE Essay Two: Hawthorn TUE TUE Fiona Stafford, Professor of Literature at Somerville TUE College Oxford, explores the symbolism, importance, TUE topicality and surprises of five trees common in the UK. In TUE this second series, she explores our ambiguous relationship TUE with trees. TUE TUE The hawthorn is such a common sight in the British TUE countryside that people hardly notice its presence - and yet TUE this hardy tree, when cut and laid, is in many ways TUE responsible for our very idea of the British countryside TUE because of its usefulness for hedging. When much of Britain TUE was enclosed in the eighteenth century, the new fields were TUE marked by hawthorn tree hedges, shaping the landscape into TUE the familiar patchwork of fields. In spring, the hawthorn TUE bursts into beautiful 'May' blossom, almost as if the hedge TUE has been covered in creamy custard - a phenomenon which has TUE inspired a massive range of painters and paintings. One of TUE the most famous thorn trees is at Glastonbury, and according TUE to local legend the original grew when Joseph of Arimathea TUE arrived in Britain, after the crucifixion, and his wooden TUE staff was turned by a miracle into a living thorn that TUE blossoms on Christmas day. Hawthorn contains chemicals which TUE are sedative, diuretic and anti-spasmodic - so it is an TUE excellent natural regulator of arterial blood pressure, and TUE is also proffered by herbalists as a treatment for heart TUE diseases and as a heart stimulant. Despite this, hawthorn TUE throughout history has been seen as unlucky, with tales of TUE woe being brought upon those who brought the blossoms into TUE the house or displayed them. Add all this to it being TUE frequently misrepresented as the crucifixion crown of thorns TUE and one can see why this tree is such a divisive force. It contains some of the most dramatic music the world WED had ever heard. WED WED Monteverdi was not universally loved, and in 1637 became WED embroiled in an unpleasant incident with a singer who had WED slandered him in public. The protracted court proceeding WED were eventually concluded to his satisfaction; it must have WED been a relief to turn to the publication of his Eighth Book WED of Madrigals, which shows off his superb dramatic style of WED vocal writing. Sensuous, martial, erotic, mournful, witty, WED these pieces are incredibly expressive and require real WED vocal agility and acting skills from the performers. WED WED At the grand old age of 76, Monteverdi went on a tour of WED Lombardy, which was something of a triumph. However, it WED seems to have worn the old man out, and he died shortly WED after returning to Venice. THU THU Poplar's not much good as wood these days - it's mainly used THU for matches, but it was used for shields and all sorts for THU centuries. However, it is the most modern and high tech of THU all trees, being the first tree to have had its complete DNA THU sequenced, revealing many surprises and secrets. There are THU many literary references which is surprising if, as many do, THU one thinks of the poplar as a tall column like tree, but THU there are lots of varieties, including those feared in THU former days because of being the tree from which the Cross THU was made, and the spreading branches of the abundant THU American poplar made it the tree of choice for lynch mobs THU throughout the southern States, as referred to in Strange THU Fruit, Billie Holiday's song describing the scene after a THU lynching. THU THU This second series written and presented by experienced THU essayist, Fiona Stafford, Professor of Literature at THU Somerville College Oxford, explores the symbolism, THU importance, topicality and surprises of five more trees THU common in the UK. FRI FRI In his seventies, Monteverdi was coaxed back to writing for FRI the operatic stage, and had a hit with The Return of Ulysses FRI to his Homeland. To satisfy the demand for yet more, he FRI wrote what many consider his masterpiece, The Coronation of FRI Poppea, the world's first opera to be based on a real FRI historical incident, and featuring real people on stage. The FRI gossipy, scurrilous tone of much of the opera chimes very FRI well with modern audiences, and seems to have done so with FRI Monteverdi's contemporaries too. Today, we hear passages FRI taken from a classic recording, conducted by John Eliot FRI Gardiner, given in London's Queen Elizabeth Hall on the FRI South Bank, in 1993. FRI FRI We end the week with an unbridled, joyous recording of one FRI of his best loved duets - the wonderful "Zefiro torna" from FRI the ensemble L'Arpeggiata. FRI FRI 22:45 The Essay b043q23z (Listen) FRI The Meaning of Trees, Series 2, Rowan FRI FRI Essay Five : Rowan FRI The second series written and presented by experienced FRI essayist, Fiona Stafford, Professor of Literature at FRI Somerville College Oxford, exploring the symbolism, FRI importance, topicality and surprises of five trees common in FRI the UK. FRI FRI The rowan comes in many guises: white ash, mountain ash, FRI quickbeam, whispering tree, witchwood. This shifting FRI identity suits a tree that is at once safe and suburban and FRI a tree sacred to antiquity and renowned for its protective FRI powers. In neat modern gardens, the pretty, delicate FRI branches with fine leaf patterns give little hint of their FRI ancient powers. The distinctive creamy blossom, vibrant FRI autumn leaves and scarlet berries make it a tree for all FRI seasons, but it is a tree for parallel worlds. As a native FRI of the Northern hills, the rowan figures large in Irish, FRI Scottish and Scandinavian traditions, its berries being the FRI food of the gods. It features in old Irish poems, such as FRI the story of Diarmid, and also in the poems of Seamus FRI Heaney; in Scottish tradition, the rowan brings colour to FRI the old Border ballads and songs as well as to many modern FRI poems. The rowan has many associations with magic and FRI witches. Its old Celtic name is 'fid na ndruad' which means FRI wizard's tree. FRI FRI The protective power is thought to come from the bright red FRI berries, as red was thought to be the best colour for FRI fighting evil and rowan wood was worn by travellers in the FRI shape of a cross. Mystery, respect and foreboding. FRI FRI Producer, Turan Ali FRI A Bona Broadcasting production for BBC Radio 3. FRI FRI COMMONWEALTH CONNECTIONS FEATURE: KENYA FRI Recorded at the African Heritage House outside Nairobi, home FRI to the finest Art Collection in Africa, two generations of FRI the Luo tribe perform the music of their people. Ayub Ogada FRI has reached an international market as a world musician but FRI here he returns to his acoustic roots and the ancient FRI nyatiti lyre. Ayub talks about his nyatiti like a friend, FRI definitely a female friend. He loves his instrument. This is FRI the instrument of the Luo people (famously this is the tribe FRI that President Obama is related to), and he has evolved a FRI softer, gentler sound' to which he adds his distinctive soft FRI sweet voice. In contrast, The Sega Sega Band, also from the FRI Luo people, play Benga music, the style that is at the root FRI of Kenyan pop music from the 60s to the present day. The FRI melodies and rhythms are shaped by the tuning of the nyatiti FRI harp and orutu, (a single string fiddle) but they have FRI modernised the music to create uptempo dance music and FRI transferred the musical lines to the modern guitar. FRI FRI COMMONWEALTH CONNECTIONS HERITAGE TRACK: NIGERIA FRI Nigeria has long been a powerhouse in terms of world music, FRI with artists like Fela Kuti reaching audiences around the FRI globe. Our Commonwealth athlete this week is US Olympian but FRI has chosen to represent Nigeria because her father was born FRI there.
