To discuss the big issues of the last twoSATdecades and now, Petroc is joined in the studio by musicSATjournalist Uwe Friedrich, Berlin Philharmonic horn playerSATSarah Willis, and the outgoing intendant of the KomischeSATOper, Andreas Homoki.SATSATThe Opera StorySATSATReunification left Berlin – now a city with a populationSATof 3.5 million – with three major opera houses – theSATStaatsoper and Komische Oper in the former East, and theSATDeutsche Oper in the West. All three have survived despiteSATpressure from some quarters to consolidate, but theSATrivalry continues – with Daniel Barenboim a central figureSATin the story.SATSATPetroc meets Matthias Glander, principal clarinettist andSATboard member of the Berlin Staatskapelle (the orchestra ofSATthe Staatsoper), who talks about first breathing the airSATof former West Berlin, and about how Barenboim gave theSATopera’s former Eastern musicians the confidence they hadSATlacked under communist rule.SATSATTwo long-standing members of the Deutsche Oper orchestraSATrecall their life as professional musicians before andSATafter 1989, and the company’s outgoing intendant KirstenSATHarms talks to Petroc about the role of politicians, andSATexplains why she is leaving.SATSATMoney and PowerSATSATAs Berlin’s Culture Senator in the 1990’s, UlrichSATRoloff-Momin was responsible for many theatre closures. HeSATexplains to Petroc about Berlin’s culture of financialSATentitlement – a legacy of huge state subsidy on both sidesSATbefore 1989, and how he believes politicians are tooSATinvolved in cultural affairs.SATSATThe Berlin Philharmonic’s intendant Pamela Rosenberg (whoSATthinks politicians are less involved than in the UK) talksSATabout the role corporate sponsorship – still a relativelySATnew concept in Berlin.SATSATAnd in the Berlin State Parliament building – theSATBundesrat – Petroc meets the Green Party’s culturalSATspokesperson Alice Ströver, who puts forward the case forSATBerlin’s thriving young independent cultural scene andSATargues that the big organisations should be moreSATaccountable to the state.SATSATOrchestras and ConductorsSATSATSimon Rattle – whose tenure as principal conductor of theSATBerlin Philharmonic has just been extended to 2018 –SATbelieves that Berlin is still a divided city. HisSATorchestra is not only seen as the jewel in Berlin’s crown,SATbut is an internationally recognisable Berlin brand. NotSATeveryone agrees that it stands so far above the city’sSAThalf a dozen other orchestras though.SATSATThe question of whether Berlin can support so manySATprofessional ensembles continues to be a source of debate.SATConductor Ingo Metzmacher, who took over at the DeutschesSATSymphony Orchestra in 2006, explains to Petroc why heSATannounced his resignation earlier this year over problemsSATwith funding, and talks about the importance of eachSATorchestra forging an individual identity. And new kid onSATthe block Sebastian Nordmann – intendant of theSATKonzerthaus, the concert hall in the former East which wasSATrebuilt 25 years ago by the GDR, talks about his ambitionsSATfor the hall and its resident orchestra.SATSATHanns Eisler AcademySATSATFinally Petroc visits the formerly East Berlin musicSATacademy bearing the name of Hanns Eisler, a composer andSATpupil of Schönberg, and finds out from its vice presidentSATJörg Mainke how over the last twenty years professors fromSATboth sides of the city have had to deal with theirSATdifferent approaches to music. And students from theSATacademy’s new music Echo Ensemble share their experiencesSATof living in Berlin – a city reunified but still showingSATtensions between East and West.SATSAT13:00 The Early Music Show b00nnzly (Listen)SATEnsemble Inegal at Cesky KrumlovSATLucie Skeaping presents a concert given by the CzechSATsoprano Gabriela Eibenova with the Prague-based EnsembleSATInegal under the baton of their founder Adam Viktoria. TheySUNfocus on two famous centres of artistic activity - WarsawSUNand Prague - and talk to Czech and Polish writers andSUNartists.SUNSUNVaughan, who was the editor of Radio Prague for manySUNyears, meets artists who were active in the Communist eraSUNsuch as author Ivan Klima, who says he was, in a way,SUNentirely free. His work was banned, so he could write whatSUNhe liked. Veteran screenwriter Jiri Stransky was sent toSUNprison - and a uranium mine - and that, he says, was hisSUNeducation, as his fellow prisoners were the brightest andSUNmost creative of his generation. Stransky is delighted toSUNhave survived to taste the freedom relished too by PetraSUNHulova who, because she could go abroad, did so, settingSUNher best-known novel in Mongolia.SUNSUNVaughan also meets novelist and film-maker TerezaSUNBrdeckova, one of whose characters suffers a nervousSUNbreakdown following the Velvet Revolution. She feels thatSUNcensorship persists today in aspects of Czech history thatSUNare difficult to discuss. Theatre director Ondraj Hrab andSUNJitka Sloupova, Vaclav Havel's literary agent and TomSUNStoppard's Czech translator, talk about rebuilding aSUNtheatre audience when drama stopped being the centre ofSUNpolitical debate. And he meets sculptor David Cerny,SUNfamous for painting the Monument to Soviet tank crews pink.SUNSUNIn Warsaw, Darius Rosiak, one of Poland's best-known radioSUNjournalists, talks to Agnieszka Holland, one of Poland'sSUNmost prominent film-makers who made To Kill A Priest,SUNabout the 1984 murder of Polish priest Father PopieluszkoSUNby the secret police.SUNSUNAnother artist active in the Communist era was JanuszSUNGlowacki, a 71-year-old playwright. In 1980, he went toSUNGdansk to spend time with the striking ship-yard workersSUNat the birth of the Solidarity trade union. He wrote aSUNnovel, Give Us the Day, about the experience, which wasSUNbanned by the censors, but published underground.SUNSUNTomasz Lipinski is a singer and guitarist from the newSUNwave punk group Brygada Kryzys (Crisis Brigade). He saysSUNhe got into music to say things that otherwise could notSUNbe said under the system. This all changed in 1989, whenSUNsome bands were able to use their opposition credentialsSUNfor commercial success. Under Communism the world was, inSUNmany ways, black and white, but now life is much moreSUNcomplex and ambiguous.SUNSUNThis is something also explored by 36-year-old WilhelmSUNSasnal, considered by many to be the leading painter ofSUNhis generation and one of the most celebrated artists fromSUNEastern Europe. He exhibits regularly in the West and manySUNof his works hang in the Saatchi Gallery in London. He wasSUN16 when Communism ended and says it has made him tougherSUNbecause in the 1970s and 80s they had to fight forSUNeverything. Sasnal certainly would not have been able toSUNhave such a successful career, earn so much and travel soSUNwidely, before the fall of Communism.SUNSUNThese two portraits of the cultural ecology of Warsaw andSUNPrague reveal how artists in Eastern Europe are, afterSUNstruggling with totaliarianism, grappling with theSUNchallenges of freedom.SUNSUN22:15 Words and Music b00np293 (Listen)SUNBerlinSUNSUNBerlin may not be as beautiful as Paris; it may not haveSUNthe brash allure of Rome or even London's muscularity; butSUNno one can think of the twentieth century without thinkingSUNof Germany's capital. It was on the frontline between twoSUNof the most powerful ideologies of modern times –SUNcommunism and capitalism; it was Hitler’s stage when heSUNseized power in 1933; and now it stands poised between aSUNresurgent Russia in the East and a Europe forging a newSUNidentity in the West... no longer divided then but stillSUNnot quite whole.SUNSUNThese upheavals have jumbled not just the city'sSUNarchitecture but also its spiritual chronology. TheSUNdistant past and the recent past overlap in a way that canSUNmake Berlin's present and future seem provisional andSUNimprovised. This would have pleased one of Berlin's greatSUNwriters, the critic and philosopher, Walter Benjamin.SUNLosing himself in the city's markets, the avenues of itsSUNTiergarten or in the domestic features of its buildingsSUNwas for him an act of recovery and of the imagination... aSUNkind of dreaming. That's my hope too for this evening'sSUNWords and Music. Its an invocation of the city not aSUNhistory. I've included an aria from Bach's MatthewSUNPassion, for example, partly because the young MendelssohnSUNrevived the great baroque composer's reputation bySUNconducting a version of the work in Berlin in 1829.
