In fact, the SAT provinces were a vital part of the operatic circuit. In this SAT programme, Susan Rutherford uncovers some of the stories SAT from the rich history of provincial opera, when audiences SAT from all classes flocked to hear whatever the visiting opera SAT company was performing. Perhaps the most tenacious presence SAT on the provincial opera scene during the nineteenth century SAT and beyond was the Carl Rosa Company, which chuffed and SAT puffed around the country on its own steam train. We SAT discover their punishing schedule - typically a residency of SAT a week with a different opera every night before boarding SAT the train again to the next theatre. Sarah Crouch, violinist SAT in the Carl Rosa orchestra as it struggled to survive during SAT the 1950s, remembers life on the road, "going on the SAT knocker" - traipsing around towns looking for digs, and SAT performing Wagner operas with a pint sized orchestra. "We SAT had to play really quite strongly." SAT SAT In spite of resources which were limited by today's SAT standards, the music itself was glorious - a repertoire SAT based around Verdi, Wagner, Puccini - including La Boheme, SAT which like many other works had its first UK performance SAT outside London. Carmen was so popular that special companies SAT were established, which toured for months at a time with SAT only that piece. English language performance was all the SAT rage. The operatic establishment during the last decades of SAT the nineteenth century was desperate to create a national SAT opera to rival the houses which were springing up in Europe. SAT Competitions were arranged to encourage British composers to SAT come up with something which could compare with the great SAT Italian and German works. In these years, in many ways, SAT seeds were sown which would flower into ENO and the SAT provincial touring opera companies of today. Martin Pickard, SAT Head of Music at Opera North, gives the contemporary SAT perspective. SAT SAT And we hear the tale of Maria Malibran - the most famous SAT opera star of her day. (The stage-presence of Lady Gaga, the SAT voice of an angel.) It was an enormous coup for the SAT Manchester Festival when she agreed to appear in 1836. The SAT members of the festival committee must have been thrilled - SAT until she died in the city, leaving nobody to take charge of SAT the arrangements. SAT SAT Producer: Kerry Clark. SAT SAT Sibelius began his musical career with high hopes of SAT becoming a concert violinist. When destiny forged another SAT path for him, then he expressed his relationship with his SAT instrument through this - his only concerto, a work that SAT combines intense virtuosity with profound depths of SAT expression. SAT SAT Stephen Johnson examines the history and background of the SAT piece and with the help of the BBC Symphony Orchestra and SAT the remarkable young Norwegian violinist Vilde Frang, he SAT unpicks the work to reveal a distinctly original and SAT challenging solo concerto, that has consistently proved a SAT firm favourite with musicians and public alike. SAT SAT 19:30 BBC Proms b014f9y6 (Listen) SAT 2011, Prom 74, Last Night of the Proms: Maxwell Davies, SAT Bartok, Wagner, Liszt SAT SAT Live from the Royal Albert Hall, London SAT SAT Conductor Edward Gardner leads the traditional festivities SAT of the Last Night of the Proms with performers including SAT super-star pianist Lang Lang playing Liszt and soprano Susan SAT Bullock singing Wagner. SAT SAT Gardner, who is the youngest Last Night conductor since Sir SAT Henry Wood himself on the first Last Night in 1895, brings a SAT youthful verve to the celebrations, and it's an event he's SAT looking forward to greatly: "I was aware of the Last Night SAT as a kid and to be involved is extraordinary." He's joined SAT by leading dramatic soprano Susan Bullock who performs SAT Brunnhilde's famous 'Immolation Scene' which concludes SAT Wagner's epic Ring cycle, as well as leading the customary SAT communal singing after the Interval. Super-star pianist Lang SAT Lang - the man who's inspired millions of Chinese children SAT to take up the piano - performs Liszt, a composer who he SAT describes as a "rock star" but also a "truly great musician" SAT - words that could equally describe Lang Lang himself. SAT SAT But it's the Prommers who give the Proms their special SAT atmosphere. Standing night after night in the arena and the SAT gallery their attentiveness and enthusiasm for the music SAT inspires performers to produce exceptional performances. SAT They also organise the nightly collection which raises SAT thousands of pounds every year for musical charities. So SAT it's fitting that this year the party begins with a SAT celebration of the Prommers with a new work by Peter Maxwell SAT Davies commissioned by the Musicians Belevolent Fund who are SAT one of the beneficiaries of the annual collection SAT SAT Sir Peter Maxwell Davies: Musica benevolens (Musicians SAT Benevolent Fund commission - World Premiere) SAT Bartók: The Miraculous Mandarin - suite SAT Wagner: Götterdämmerung - Immolation Scene SAT Liszt: Piano Concerto No. 1 in E flat major SAT SAT Lang Lang (piano) SAT Susan Bullock (soprano) SAT The Fanfare Trumpeters of the Household Division SAT BBC Symphony Chorus SAT BBC Symphony Orchestra SAT Edward Gardner (conductor). SAT SAT 20:45 Twenty Minutes b014f9y8 (Listen) SAT You Only Sing When You're Winning SAT SAT With the idea of an audience singalong becoming enshrined SAT not only in the Proms last night traditions but also in the SAT concert programme itself, Simon Townley tells the story of SAT one of tonight's chosen numbers. 'You'll Never Walk alone' SAT might have started as a Broadway hit but its hold on the SAT national psyche has more to do with its emergence in the SAT 1960s and 70s as the anthem of Liverpool Football club's SAT famous Kop, the embankment at one end of their Anfield SAT ground. SAT Simon recalls how, as a budding young pianist and serious SAT minded classical music enthusiast the power of the Anfield SAT anthem was thrust upon him while on an exchange visit to SAT Paris. Billetted with a family of fanatical French football SAT fans Simon made his name by predicting that their beloved St SAT Etienne FC would come off second best on a visit to SAT Liverpool for an important European cup tie. They did, but SAT it was the crowd singing that astonished the young Simon. SAT Why 'You'll never walk alone' worked as a singalong piece, SAT how its impact reflected the mordant wit of the football SAT terrace and why it's appropriate that it should be picked up SAT by a Prom audience as a piece that tells us as much about SAT the singers as the song, is the theme of Simon's talk. MON MON 12:00 Composer of the Week b014fbk4 (Listen) MON Alexandr Grechaninov (1864-1956), Grechaninov Studies Music MON in Secret MON MON Grechaninov composed over one thousand works, and his life MON spanned nearly an entire century, and almost spanned the MON globe from Russia, travelling to London and Italy, and MON emigrating to Paris and finally the USA. He was never MON interested in the avant-garde, and thought that modernists MON spent too much attention on the concrete materials of music. MON Whereas, in his own works, he wished to faithfully MON communicate his inner emotion to both performer and MON listener, so that when leaving the world he could be MON satisfied in saying "I have fulfilled my life's task". Some MON of his songs and sacred works, which are entrenched in the MON rich heritage of Russian folk song, became very popular, and MON he was subsequently awarded a pension by the Tsar. This MON stopped during the Revolutionary period, and at times he and MON his wife were close to starvation. Grechaninov was however MON considered something of a revolutionary himself, for daring MON to question the authority of the Holy Synod in the realms of MON sacred music. He believed that liturgical music should MON relate to the texts sung, and not be over embellished, and MON he actively promoted the use of instruments which the Holy MON Synod had previously banned. Grechaninov's sacred music MON lives on today, and the Creed from his second setting of the MON Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom was performed in the blessing MON ceremony of Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall. MON MON In the first episode exploring the life and music of MON Aleksandr Grechaninov, Donald Macleod looks at the MON composer's early years battling against poverty and his MON fathers will, in order to study music. Once a piano was MON eventually installed at his home, it would feature MON prominently in his own compositions, and in Snowflakes opus MON 47, Grechaninov performs on the piano himself. MON MON Grechaninov's parents were deeply religious, and he was MON often taken to the shrines of Saints, even having to bite MON into the wooden coffin of St Sergius in order to cure MON toothache. Sacred music would prove to be of significant MON interest to Grechaninov, including his concerto for choir, MON Inspire, O Lord. MON MON Through cheating in his school exams, Grechaninov would MON eventually be allowed to study music, firstly at the Moscow MON Conservatoire. However, he argued with his teacher Arensky, MON and left to study under Rimsky-Korsakov at the St Petersburg MON Conservatoire. Rimsky-Korsakov would not only be best man at MON Grechaninov's wedding, but would also advocate the MON performance of a number of his student's works, including MON the String Quartet opus 2, which won a Belyayev prize. MON MON 22:45 The Essay b014ffyx (Listen) MON The Other Empire, Episode 1 MON MON Julian Jackson uncovers the forgotten - and indeed in this MON country largely unknown - story of the French Empire. In the MON first of five Essays, he tells the story of France's first MON war of decolonisation, a slave rebellion in Haiti, sparked MON off by the French revolution in Paris and led by the MON charismatic Toussaint L'Ouverture. MON MON The French Empire was second only to the British. At its MON peak in the 1930s it covered some 10 million square miles MON with a population of 100 million. It stretched from the West MON Indies to the South Pacific, from Indo-China to the Maghreb, MON from Sub-Saharan Africa to the Levant. The Empire may be MON gone now but its legacy lives on both in France and in the MON former colonies. With a Muslim population of 4.5 million MON today, France, thanks to her former Empire, has the largest MON Islamic population of any country in Europe; couscous is as MON much national dish as coq au vin (or chicken vindaloo in MON Britain). And with recent turbulent events in Africa and the MON Middle East reminding the French and us of the importance of MON these former links, this is a story that is worth telling in MON some detail. MON MON France's imperial story which ended with the Algerian War of MON the 1950s in fact started over a century earlier with the MON first war of decolonization in the French sugar colony of St MON Domingue - now Haiti - in the Caribbean. A slave rebellion MON there, led by Toussaint L'Ouverture, resulted in his MON eventual capture by Napoleon, and death in a jail in the MON French Jura. But despite his capture, in the end the MON revolution was successful, 50,000 French troops perished, MON Napoleon suffered his first ever defeat and Haiti became MON independent in 1804 MON MON Producer: Simon Elmes. TUE TUE 12:00 Composer of the Week b014fg72 (Listen) TUE Alexandr Grechaninov (1864-1956), Grechaninov Takes on Cui TUE and Wins TUE TUE He was considered a revolutionary in the realms of sacred TUE music, and his life nearly spanned an entire century living TUE through the privations of the Bolshevik uprising, and TUE eventually emigrating to the USA - Donald Macleod explores TUE the life and music of Aleksandr Grechaninov. TUE TUE After leaving the St Petersburg Conservatory, Grechaninov TUE had a number of his early songs published. Some of these TUE became very popular including Lullaby opus 1 no.5, which is TUE sung in today's programme by Paul Robeson. However, the TUE critic Cesar Cui, who had also published a book on Russian TUE songs, categorised these works by Grechaninov as third rate. TUE Grechaninov confronted Cui and found out that he'd never TUE heard his songs, and subsequently demanded an apology from TUE him. TUE TUE During his early career, Grechaninov would have to rely on TUE teaching young musicians in order to survive financially. TUE Although at times he would disagree with the parents of his TUE students, he would go on to compose a number of songs and TUE piano works for children, including his twelve piano pieces TUE Historiettes opus 118, and Six songs opus 31, including one TUE about a trumpet-playing jackdaw. TUE TUE During this early period in his career, Grechaninov started TUE to turn his attention to sacred music, and he composed his TUE first Liturgy of St John Chrysostom opus 12. He would go on TUE to compose a number of works for the Church, and prove to be TUE something of a revolutionary in this arena. TUE TUE 22:45 The Essay b014fg9x (Listen) TUE The Other Empire, Episode 2 TUE TUE Julian Jackson uncovers the forgotten - and indeed in this TUE country largely unknown - story of the French Empire. In the TUE second of five Essays, he tells the story of France's TUE involvement in sub-Saharan Africa. TUE TUE The French Empire was second only to the British. At its TUE peak in the 1930s it covered some 10 million square miles TUE with a population of 100 million. It stretched from the West TUE Indies to the South Pacific, from Indo-China to the Maghreb, TUE from Sub-Saharan Africa to the Levant. The Empire may be TUE gone now but its legacy lives on both in France and in the TUE former colonies. With a Muslim population of 4.5 million TUE today, France, thanks to her former Empire, has the largest TUE Islamic population of any country in Europe; couscous is as TUE much national dish as coq au vin (or chicken vindaloo in TUE Britain). And with recent turbulent events in Africa and the TUE Middle East reminding the French and us of the importance of TUE these former links, this is a story that is worth telling in TUE some detail. TUE TUE The inheritance of France's sub-Saharan empire in Africa is TUE complex: What was once the Upper Volta, then part of French TUE Sudan, then part of Niger in 1927, then divided up between TUE Cote d'Ivoire, Sudan and Niger, then (1947) Upper Volta TUE again - and is now Burkina Faso. The arbitrary divisions TUE imposed by the French - are of course part of the reasons TUE for the difficult history of this region ever since... TUE TUE Producer: Simon Elmes. It proved to be very popular, WED especially the aria the Flowers are blooming, which we'll WED hear in a recording from 1904. WED WED During this period, Grechaninov started to become a little WED troublesome in the eyes of the Holy Synod, for daring to WED question their authority in the realms of sacred music. He WED was convinced that their predilection for ornate liturgical WED music was wrong, and that music composed for liturgical use WED should be closely related to the sung text. One example is WED his Creed from the second Liturgy of St John Chrysostom opus WED 29, which Tsar Nicholas II ordered to be sung ever Sunday at WED the Imperial Court Chapel. WED WED 22:45 The Essay b014fhkw (Listen) WED The Other Empire, Episode 3 WED WED Julian Jackson uncovers the forgotten - and indeed in this WED country largely unknown - story of the French Empire. In the WED third of five Essays, he tells the story of the imperial WED troops who fought for France in two world wars. WED WED The French Empire was second only to the British. At its WED peak in the 1930s it covered some 10 million square miles WED with a population of 100 million. It stretched from the West WED Indies to the South Pacific, from Indo-China to the Maghreb, WED from Sub-Saharan Africa to the Levant. The Empire may be WED gone now but its legacy lives on both in France and in the WED former colonies. With a Muslim population of 4.5 million WED today, France, thanks to her former Empire, has the largest WED Islamic population of any country in Europe; couscous is as WED much national dish as coq au vin (or chicken vindaloo in WED Britain). And with recent turbulent events in Africa and the WED Middle East reminding the French and us of the importance of WED these former links, this is a story that is worth telling in WED some detail. WED WED The armies lauded by de Gaulle on his triumphant return to WED Paris in 1944, who had liberated Italy and southern France WED were largely made up of black and North African troops. But WED this was not true of the French troops that helped liberate WED Paris because the British, American and Free French had all WED colluded in ensuring that those troops were white.Tonight, WED Julian focuses on the vital importance played by colonial WED troops in the French armies - both in the conquest of other WED parts of the Empire but also in the First and Second World WED Wars. THU THU Conflict is the main theme of this fourth programme in which THU Donald Macloed surveys the life and music of Aleksandr THU Grechaninov. The Orthodox Church were keeping a close eye on THU this revolutionary composer who had dared to question their THU authority. They banned Grechaninov's second opera Sister THU Beatrice as blasphemous, and his sacred music such as the THU Cantata Praise the Lord opus 65, would have to be premiered THU in a concert hall, not a religious venue, for it dared to THU use instruments. THU THU Although Grechaninov was awarded a pension by the Tsar, and THU his works were proving very popular, no one was safe during THU the revolution of 1917. Grechaninov and his wife would find THU themselves close to starvation, and he ended up in a THU sanatorium due to malnutrition. During this period, THU Grechaninov would give a number of concerts for children in THU hospitals, where he would start to generate ideas for his THU set of ten piano pieces for children opus 99. THU THU Life was becoming a risky business for the Grechaninov THU family, as they found their house in the middle of a THU no-man's-land between two warring sides. They were scared to THU go outside for fear of being hit by a stray bullet. In fact THU the Bolsheviks searched their house, convinced that there THU were snipers operating from there, and subsequently closed THU off a lot of the rooms to Grechaninov, including his study. THU However, a ray of light came in the guise of Charles Crane THU who paid for Grechaninov and his wife to visit London, and THU who also paid for new clothes, and the best food and THU accommodation. Upon returning to Russia refreshed, there was THU a new economic policy which made circumstances a little THU better, and Grechaninov gave a number of concerts including THU the premiere of his third symphony opus 100. And the poet, Christian Schubart sagely THU predicted on hearing it that: "If Mozart is not a plant THU forced in the hot-house, he is bound to grow into one of the THU greatest musical composers who ever lived." FRI FRI 12:00 Composer of the Week b014fkn5 (Listen) FRI Alexandr Grechaninov (1864-1956), Grechaninov Emigrates to FRI the USA FRI FRI He was considered a revolutionary in the realms of sacred FRI music, and his life nearly spanned an entire century - FRI Donald Macleod explores the life and music of Aleksandr FRI Grechaninov. FRI FRI In this final programme, Donald Macleod follows Aleksandr FRI Grechaninov as he emigrates first to Paris, and then to the FRI USA. Before leaving Russia, Grechaninov would start to FRI compose his fourth Symphony opus 102, where he would FRI encapsulate his feelings of sadness over the death of FRI Tchaikovsky. This work is very Russian, but it would not be FRI premiered until 1942 under the direction of John Barbirolli FRI in New York. FRI FRI Having left Russia, Grechaninov did not stop writing music FRI for the church, and in fact went on to compose a number of FRI works for the Roman Catholic liturgy. In 1937, a few years FRI after his seventieth birthday, Grechaninov entered a FRI competition with a new work, his Missa Festiva opus 154, FRI which won the competition outright. FRI FRI Grechaninov's biggest contribution to the world of music was FRI in his sacred writing, and towards the end of his life he FRI composed what he considered to be his most significant work, FRI his Missa Oecumenica opus 142, a universal mass. In this FRI work he wished to transcend the traditions of any one form FRI of Christian worship, and combines the text of the Catholic FRI liturgy with Gregorian, Orthodox and Hebrew chants. FRI FRI Grechaninov became a U.S. citizen in 1949 at the age of FRI eighty-five. On his 90th birthday a concert was held in his FRI honour in the New York town hall - he died a year later. FRI FRI Janice Galloway writes and performs an especially FRI commissioned new story, and talks about her new memoir All FRI Made Up, which covers her teenage years, and how secondary FRI school opened up new cultural worlds for her. The first part FRI of her life story, This is Not About Me, won praise for its FRI minute detail of childhood perception. FRI FRI Mike Scott from the Waterboys describes how he has created a FRI suite of Yeats's poetry set to rock'n'roll music, and FRI performs excerpts in The Verb studio. FRI FRI David Bellos talks about his irreverent survey of FRI translation theory, Is That a Fish in Your Ear? David argues FRI that without translation there would be no world news, no FRI repair manuals for cars and we wouldn't be able to assemble FRI flat-pack furniture. He asks the question how do we ever FRI know that we've grasped what anybody else says - in our own FRI language or in another? FRI FRI And there's more from The Verb's new voices, a scheme run FRI between Radio 3 and the Arts Council, supporting emergent FRI talent on the spoken poetry scene. This week we feature FRI poets from Birmingham and their mentors, Sean O'Brien and FRI Aoife Mannix. FRI FRI 22:45 The Essay b014fl87 (Listen) FRI The Other Empire, Episode 5 FRI FRI Julian Jackson uncovers the forgotten - and indeed in this FRI country largely unknown - story of the French Empire. In the FRI last of five Essays, he tells the story of France's last FRI great colonial crisis that sowed the seeds for decades of FRI racial tension at home that still endures today. FRI FRI The French Empire was second only to the British. At its FRI peak in the 1930s it covered some 10 million square miles FRI with a population of 100 million. It stretched from the West FRI Indies to the South Pacific, from Indo-China to the Maghreb, FRI from Sub-Saharan Africa to the Levant. The Empire may be FRI gone now but its legacy lives on both in France and in the FRI former colonies. With a Muslim population of 4.5 million FRI today, France, thanks to her former Empire, has the largest FRI Islamic population of any country in Europe; couscous is as FRI much national dish as coq au vin (or chicken vindaloo in FRI Britain). And with recent turbulent events in Africa and the FRI Middle East reminding the French and us of the importance of FRI these former links, this is a story that is worth telling in FRI some detail. FRI FRI Tunisia and Morocco had been granted independence relatively FRI easily in 1950s because they were technically only FRI protectorates while Algeria with a white population of over FRI a million was seen as an integral part of France. What also FRI made the Algerian war so bloody and painful was the way the FRI army used torture to break the resistance. Julian explains FRI how this became a crisis of conscience for the French: FRI having been the victims of Nazi torture in WWII they are now FRI the torturers... FRI FRI Producer: Simon Elmes.
