English music. Henry Wood wrote to The Times, saying 'heSAT
was such a mighty figure that one cannot think of himSAT
dead. It is the greatest loss to music that could haveSAT
possibly happened, and a loss from which this country willSAT
take many years to recover, for there is no one else toSAT
touch him'. A telegram was also sent by the King and QueenSAT
to Elgar's daughter proclaiming their 'true sympathy inSAT
your bereavement'.SAT
SAT
The deaths of Holst and Delius later in the year attractedSAT
far fewer newspaper inches but Delius's death did make theSAT
front page of the Daily Express, unlike Elgar's. OpinionSAT
at the time was divided over Holst and Delius'sSAT
contribution to British music and in Delius's case, muchSAT
was made of his blindness and loneliness. The tabloids atSAT
the time reported that 'tragic' Delius was buried withoutSAT
a funeral but when David explores contemporary accounts,SAT
he reveals that even back in 1934, one shouldn't alwaysSAT
believe what one reads in the newspapers.SAT

The Musicians of IngoSUN
A reading of author Helen Dunmore's atmospheric CornishSUN
tale that will grip both adults and children, writtenSUN
specially to accompany 2009's Family Prom.SUN
SUN
Inspired by the world Dunmore created in her celebratedSUN
Ingo series, the story is set on a remote Cornish island,SUN
where tales of King Arthur, ghostly lost souls and musicalSUN
mer people have become part of the folklore. Music, too,SUN
is a big part of the close-knit community, with theSUN
Cornish bodhran, harp and penny whistle at the heart ofSUN
its unearthly sound. One day, one of the villagers, aSUN
gifted young violinist, disappears. He is usually to beSUN
found on the beach, where he seems to take inspirationSUN
from the sea itself. When the villagers find him standingSUN
at the water's edge, his haunting violin is not the onlySUN
instrument piercing the night sky - he seems to be beingSUN
accompanied by the waves, or perhaps someSUN

Bach's Partita No 4 in DSUN
Stephen Johnson and pianist Leon McCawley examine Bach'sSUN
Partita No 4.SUN
SUN
Bach composed six partitas, or suites of dances, that haveSUN
become a landmark of the pianist's repertoire, even thoughSUN
the music was probably originally conceived for theSUN
harpsichord. The fourth is arguably the most cohesive inSUN
the collection, demonstrating Bach's unfailing imaginationSUN
and skill with its rich variety of styles and moods.SUN

Stephen and Leon examine the background and the workingsSUN
of the piece in a programme that was recorded before anSUN

Cymru fach (Dearest Wales) has music by the twentiethSUN
century Welsh composers Alun Hoddinott, Grace Williams andSUN
William Mathias, whose Harp Concerto (1970) was inspiredSUN
by the bardic tradition and is played here by OssianSUN
Ellis, to whom the concerto is dedicated. Daniel Jones'SUN
Fourth Symphony was composed in memory of the composer'sSUN
lifelong friend, Dylan Thomas, for the 1954 NationalSUN
Eisteddfod. Bryn Terfel sings Cymru Fach.SUN
SUN
There is music for viols from perhaps Wales' greatestSUN
composer, the 17th Century madrigalist and court-musicianSUN

Ruth Madoc reads the Welsh Arthurian epic The Mabinogion,SUN
Peter Finch's satire on the bardic tradition, TonySUN
Curtis' poem about a funeral in the Valleys and IdrisSUN
Davies' lament on the decline of the coal mines.SUN
SUN
Owen Teale's selections include RS Thomas' impassionedSUN
attack on the anglicised Welsh, Dannie Abse's reflectionSUN

SUN
'What is this life if, full of care,SUN

Richard Burton's remarkable voice is heard in theSUN
classic 1954 BBC recording of Dylan Thomas' Under MilkSUN

mining. Gwyneth Lewis reads her own verse Dechrau'rSUN
Anghofio (What's in a Name), which explores the survivalSUN
of Wales' ecosystem and language, asking if certainSUN
birds are about to disappear along with the Welsh wordsSUN

A performance of Smetana's rustic Bohemian comedy TheMON
Bartered Bride, which is set at a Slavic fair and knownMON
for its high-spirited overture, followed by Bartok's DanceMON

Romania and as far afield as Africa.MON
MON
There is also Martinu's Concerto for two pianos, composedMON
just after his First Symphony in 1943, and which betraysMON
some of the tensions of two years earlier when Martinu,MON
