SUN SUN His music choices have a distinct political slant. They SUN begin in Vienna with Mahler's Fourth Symphony, which gives SUN rise to a discussion about the rise of European SUN anti-semitism. The tensions present in Vienna were SUN replicated in Berlin, where Lotte Lenya recorded Kurt SUN Weill's Alabama Song in 1930., three years before the Nazi SUN rise to power forced Weill and others out of Germany.John SUN Sergeant's next choice is the theme from the US musical 42nd SUN Street, which demonstrates how Americans reacted to the SUN financial crisis following the 1929 Wall Street crash. Bela SUN Bartok's introverted Sixth Quartet was written on the eve of SUN his own departure for America, where unlike Weill, he felt SUN underrated. Meanwhile, the two greatest 20th-century Russian SUN composers (Prokofiev, represented by his opera War and SUN Peace, and Shostakovich - the 8th Quartet) ended up trying SUN to appease the Soviet authorities. John Sergeant's final SUN choice is an extract from John Adams' opera 'Nixon in SUN China', covering the US President's 1972 visit to China. He earns extra money for his family by SUN performing menial jobs for his captain and agreeing to take SUN part in medical experiments conducted by the regimental SUN doctor. But then an act of betrayal shatters his brittle SUN life. Written in 1837 but not performed until the early SUN twentieth century, this shard-like unfinished play is now SUN recognised as a major work, perhaps the first modern play, SUN in that it argues that our lives are determined by social SUN circumstance. Perveen Hamilton SUN SUN Original Music by Tom Lingard SUN Produced by Gary Brown SUN SUN Buchner was a political radical and an academic in natural SUN sciences; he set out to write a political play in that he SUN placed the common man as the central character. The script SUN evolved in tandem with Büchner's research on the nervous SUN system and cerebral lesions, together with his annotations SUN of Spinoza, which he pursued to the day of his early death. SUN But the play is more than a test case. It is a pyscho-drama SUN that abolishes the hierarchy of suffering. The anti-hero may SUN be inarticulate and he commits the most heinous crime but he SUN is presented as a victim whose actions demand to be examined SUN and understood. SUN SUN In the first programme, Tristram explores how the insight of SUN the great British economist, the Reverend Robert Malthus SUN (1766-1834), wreaked havoc in 19th century India - and yet SUN was later adopted by Indians themselves. Malthus argued that SUN the number of people in the world will always tend to SUN increase faster than the supply of food to feed them. The SUN only way to prevent this was to act to lower the birth rate. SUN Or to wait for famine, war and disease to intervene. SUN SUN Tristram begins in Hertfordshire, among the elegant SUN quadrangles of what was once the home of the East India SUN Company's training college. Here, he discovers, Malthus SUN taught for almost thirty years, shaping the worldview of SUN future colonial governors. But soon he follows the trainees' SUN journey to India. When famines began to strike India in the SUN later 19th century, many administrators responded on SUN Malthusian lines. Famine was inevitable. Spending a fortune SUN to save lives was at best a "necessary evil". SUN SUN In Delhi, Tristram visits the site of the astonishing 1877 SUN 'Durbar', an eye-popping display of Imperial grandeur - SUN which began just as news was emerging of a terrible famine SUN in southern India. And he discovers how, amid a week-long SUN feast for thousands of dignitaries, one senior British SUN administrator was dispatched south. His mission: to stop the SUN regional government spending too much money on famine SUN relief. SUN SUN From there, Tristram travels to Chennai (formerly Madras) to SUN learn about the apocalyptic horror the region endured, at SUN the cost of millions of lives. He listens to a Tamil folk SUN song which mourns the suffering of people driven to dig up SUN roots and give away their children in their struggle to SUN survive. And then - astonishingly - he discovers how SUN Malthus' ideas were taken up by Indians themselves, from SUN campaigns for contraception in the 1930s to the coercive SUN sterilisation campaigns of the 1970s. SUN SUN But finally Tristram asks whether the malign uses to which SUN Malthus has been put mean that his basic idea can be safely SUN ignored? Or is the ongoing growth of the world's population SUN a serious issue that urgently needs our attention, for the SUN good of everyone? SUN SUN With Professor David Arnold, Dr Minoti Chakravatry-Kaul, Dr SUN David Hall-Matthews, Dr Chandrika Kaul, Professor A.R. SUN Venkatachalapathy, Associate Professor S. SUN SUN 22:15 Words and Music b00yrhfh (Listen) SUN Money SUN SUN Money makes the world go round. It also tends to bring out SUN the worst in people, and a wealth of novels and poems have SUN been written on and around the subject. I was interested in SUN the impact money has on literary characters. The gentlemen SUN in Jane Austen’s novels usually have plenty of it, while the SUN unfortunate Katerina Ivanovna in Dostoyevsky’s Crime and SUN Punishment certainly does not. Defoe’s Moll Flanders and F. SUN Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby are on the make, while SUN characters in Dickens and E. Nesbit are in a ruinous state SUN through losing their money. And Martin Amis’s John Self SUN thinks he’s making money, later to find that he’s actually SUN losing it too. SUN SUN Many of the texts and poems I chose had obvious musical SUN parallels: Jason Guriel’s poem which celebrates the real SUN talent behind the record labels of the 1960s names drummer SUN Hal Blaine, so I wanted to feature his playing. And Leonard SUN Bacon’s A Concert describes the millionaire audience who are SUN completely oblivious to the plight of Musorgsky’s Boris SUN Godunov. MON MON 12:00 Composer of the Week b00yrjx2 (Listen) MON Francesco Geminiani (1687-1762), Episode 1 MON MON Francesco Geminiani was considered something of a musical MON god, deemed to be the equal of Handel and Corelli, a master MON without parallel in the art of composition in 18th century MON London - Donald Macleod traces the life and music of this MON now largely forgotten composer. MON MON Geminiani's life began in Lucca, initially learning the MON violin from his father, then on to lessons with Il Gobbo - MON "the Hunchback". He'd also go on to be tutored by two MON Arcadian masters, counterpoint with Alessandro Scarlatti, MON and additional violin lessons with Corelli. MON MON On arrival in London in 1714, Geminiani would launch himself MON into print with his own arrangements of works by Corelli. MON People who wanted to be considered to be someone of note MON would undertake the Grand Tour of Italy, where they would MON come across the music of Corelli. Subsequently, Corelli was MON hugely popular in England, and any musician who could claim MON some sort of lineage to the Italian master, was sure of a MON flourishing career. Soon Geminiani would soon be presented MON to King George I, accompanied at the harpsichord by Handel. MON MON Throughout his career, Geminiani would be celebrated not MON only as a composer, but also as a performer. Tartini would MON name him Il Furibondo, the 'wild' or 'furious' one. Due to MON his excellence as a performer, his compositions were MON sometimes far too advanced for the public to perform. MON However, his opus 2 and opus 3 Concerti grossi would become MON his most popular pieces, often performed in concert halls MON and also between the acts of stage works. MON MON Another enterprise of Geminiani's was the writing of a MON number of Treaties, such as on accompaniment, or The Art of MON Playing the Guitar. His publication entitled The Art of MON Playing the Violin would become as popular as his opus 3 MON set. It was the first work of its kind, intended for MON professionals to standardise playing the violin. This MON Treaty, including its 'Geminiani Grip', has influenced MON performers today and is an invaluable source for MON understanding the Italian School of music from that period. MON MON Geminiani travelled for much of his life between London, MON Paris and Dublin, seeking the next project to launch himself MON into. Although he was deemed great by some, a "God" amongst MON musicians, many of his publications were in fact financial MON failures. He was also nicknamed a 'Reheater', on account of MON the amount of times he would publish the same work, revised MON or arranged for different instruments. He died in 1762 in MON Dublin, yet despite the unsettled financial nature of his MON career, he remained as popular as ever in England up until MON 1800, especially with his Opus 3 Concerto grossi. MON MON In today's programme on the life and music of Francesco MON Geminiani, Donald Macleod traces the composer's early life, MON from his beginnings in Lucca to his arrival in London. This MON journey took Geminiani through Naples, where he was for a MON brief time leader of the orchestra. However, his tempo was MON so unsteady, with unexpected accelerations and relaxations, MON that the musicians and singers complained. Geminiani was MON clearly a natural soloist, of independent mind, as MON demonstrated in his Sonata for Violin Solo in B flat major. MON MON Geminiani was taught the violin not only by his father, but MON also by Il Gobbo - "the Hunchback". He was also to have MON lessons in counterpoint with Alessandro Scarlatti, and MON additional tutoring on the violin from Corelli. It was MON Geminiani's association with Corelli that would pave the way MON for his own success in London. The music of Corelli was very MON popular in England during the 18th century, and once MON Geminiani arrived in London, he printed a number of works MON including the Concerto grosso in D minor no. 12, which was MON an arrangement of Corelli's La Follia. MON MON Soon Geminiani would find an influential supporter, in the MON guise of Baron Kielmansegg, who arranged for Geminiani, MON accompanied by Handel at the harpsichord, to perform in MON front to King George I at St. James's Palace. Geminiani went MON on to dedicate his first published compositions to Baron MON Kielmansegg, including the Opus 1 Sonatas. TUE TUE 12:00 Composer of the Week b00yrl28 (Listen) TUE Francesco Geminiani (1687-1762), Episode 2 TUE TUE Francesco Geminiani was considered something of a musical TUE god, deemed to be the equal of Handel and Corelli, a master TUE without parallel in the art of composition in 18th century TUE London - Donald Macleod traces the life and music of this TUE now largely forgotten composer. TUE TUE Geminiani burst onto the musical scene in London in 1714, TUE not only with arrangements of his former tutor Corelli's TUE music, but also with his own opus I sonatas. As was the TUE fashion of the time, he would rework his own music for other TUE combinations of instruments, including the Sonata in D major TUE op.1 no.10 arranged for Flute. TUE TUE Geminiani would later frequent the Queen's Head tavern, TUE where a new Masonic Lodge was being founded. He was given TUE the rank of "Perpetual Dictator", and the Lodge was TUE concerned with developing musical tastes in London, TUE including purchasing copies of Geminiani's arrangements of TUE Corelli, such as the Concerto no.4 in F major. TUE TUE Although Geminiani's fame was principally as a violinist, TUE his musical judgement seems to have been sought in a wide TUE variety of areas, including acting as an examiner alongside TUE Handel in the appointment of a new organist at St. George's TUE Church, Hanover Square. Around this time the Academy of TUE Vocal Music was taking form, with meetings at the Crown and TUE Anchor Tavern in the Strand. Geminiani was there at the TUE start, and would go on to compose a few vocal works of his TUE own, including "She raise me up and loot me in". TUE TUE German composer Detlev Glanert invited BBC SO leader Stephen TUE Bryant to introduce his violin concerto to the UK after a TUE meeting at the 2009 BBC Proms. Inspired by Rilke's Sonnets TUE to Orpheus, the concerto is an ideal introduction to the TUE composer's beautifully crafted music and distinctive TUE soundworld. He or she TUE must think - she has a past, and thus a memory; and a mind TUE engaged in purposeful thought about the future. She has TUE regrets and hopes, exuberance and shame; she has siblings TUE and parents, perhaps a spouse or lover. She may believe in TUE God (a significant origin of the stream of consciousness is TUE the Biblical psalm). How does the novelist represent this TUE kind of thought on the page? The novel's ability to depict TUE such thought has "improved" over the last two hundred years, TUE as surely as the combustion engine has become more efficient TUE -- what are the elements of this progress? WED WED Geminiani was a performer at the top of his form, and WED nicknamed 'Il Furibondo' - the wild or furious one by fellow WED violinist Giuseppe Tartini. His publication of his Opus 3 WED collection of concertos in 1732 had rocketed Geminiani to WED fame, and placed him in the eyes of his contemporaries as WED the master of composition in London. The star of this opus 3 WED set was the Concerto Grosso in E minor, no.6. WED WED Geminiani was very much an independent person, and WED frequently throughout his career turned down opportunities WED for regularly paid work, as the world of musical patronage WED just didn't suit him. In 1732 he arrived in Paris, where a WED new career as an art dealer seems to have taken hold of him. WED However, this enterprise soon landed Geminiani in prison. WED After this point Geminiani is less cold to the idea of WED patronage, and we find him in Dublin working for Lord WED Tullamore. His spell in France influenced his works, and can WED be heard in his revised opus 1 Sonata in E minor. WED WED Around this same period, Geminiani was working on his Opus 4 WED sonatas, which were not as successful as his previous WED publications. When visiting France again, he noticed the WED popularity of works for harpsichord, and decided to WED transcribe and publish these sonatas for the harpsichord, WED entitled Pièces de Clavecin. These transcriptions and WED reworking of former published music, soon had Geminiani WED labelled as a 'Reheater'. THU THU Geminiani's music was wildly popular, and performed all over THU England in both concert halls, and also in the theatre THU between the acts of stage works. One work likely to be THU picked out for such performances, would have been the THU Concerto grosso in G minor op.3 no.2, as the opus 3 set were THU his biggest hit. It is this association with the theatre, THU which is the focus for Donald Macleod in today's programme. THU THU With the opera houses closed during the Jacobite rebellion, THU Geminiani decided to cash in on the situation by delving THU into the world of the theatre. The mysterious Count de Saint THU Germain, who was rumoured to be 2000 years old, was to be THU Geminiani's chief collaborator in presenting the opera THU L'Incostanza Delusa. The opera was not a success, and THU although Geminiani composed no specific music for this work, THU it was likely that between the acts he performed some of his THU new compositions including his Concerto grosso in D minor THU op.7 no.4. THU THU The Opus 7 were published in the Hague, but did not go down THU well with the London public. However, Geminiani's music was THU still hugely popular in France, frequently performed at the THU Concert Spirituel series. Geminiani, at the age of 66, THU returned to France and embarked upon the writing of music THU for a pantomime called Le Forêt Enchantée - The Enchanted THU Forest. The work was performed at the famous Salle des THU Machines in the Tuileries Palace, in collaboration with one THU of the most famous and innovative stage designers of his THU day, Giovanni Servandoni. But the music, dance, miming THU actors and magical transformations occurring on stage, were THU not appreciated by the Parisians. FRI FRI 12:00 Composer of the Week b00yrlwb (Listen) FRI Francesco Geminiani (1687-1762), Episode 5 FRI FRI Francesco Geminiani was considered something of a musical FRI god, deemed to be the equal of Handel and Corelli, a master FRI without parallel in the art of composition in 18th century FRI London - Donald Macleod traces the life and music of this FRI now largely forgotten composer. FRI FRI Geminiani was no fool, and he realised that his popularity FRI in England was not what it once was. The opus 2 and opus 3 FRI publications were as popular as ever, and his music was FRI still held as equal to that of Handel and Corelli. Yet his FRI recent publications did not inspire the success that he'd FRI hoped for. Geminiani started to turn his back on FRI composition, and instead focused on telling people how to do FRI it, and how to play it, including publishing a number of FRI songs in his 'A treatise of Good Taste in the Art of FRI Musick'. FRI FRI It was during the later part of his life, that Geminiani FRI would publish what would be his last big hit, 'The Art of FRI Playing the Violin' opus 9. This publication was intended FRI for professionals, and was not a teach-yourself tutor. FRI Within its pages, Geminiani condensed his long experience of FRI virtuoso performances and his years of teaching, and FRI createed a manual that would see a number of reprints and FRI publications in the USA and France. This treaty would also FRI go on to influence violinists today, not least of all with FRI the 'Geminiani Grip'. FRI FRI One final treaty Geminiani was intending to publish was on FRI music in general. However, due to the treachery of a female FRI servant, this work was stolen, and has never been seen FRI since. The treaty on The Art of Playing the Guitar or Cittra FRI does exist, which included a number of short sonatas. FRI FRI Geminiani died in Dublin at the age of 74, although the FRI papers reported that he was 96. The composer and former FRI pupil Charles Avison said. "I revere his memory in this very FRI expression which I have often heard him repeat, that Truth FRI and Simplicity are the best criterion for the fine arts, as FRI they are of the good conduct of Life". The Opus 3 set FRI remained Geminiani's most popular work up until 1800, FRI including the Concerto grosso in E minor op.3 no.3.
