SAT Cage first prepared a piano when he was commissioned to SAT write for the dance work Bacchanale. The venue was too small SAT for Cage's percussion group and the only instrument SAT available was a piano. Cage was excited by the possibility SAT of "placing in the hands of a single pianist the equivalent SAT of an entire percussion orchestra" and went on to compose SAT over thirty pieces using a variety of items to prepare his SAT piano. SAT Cage coined the term "prepared piano" and was undoubtedly SAT the composer who made the technique famous. Earlier SAT composers such as Henry Cowell and Erik Satie had SAT contributed to the idea but some musicologists believe the SAT technique goes back to the early nineteenth century when SAT paper was placed over piano strings. SAT In an unusual and humorous programme Rainer composes his own SAT piece for the prepared piano using a manual written by SAT Richard Bunger Evans, a close associate of John Cage. SAT The Royal College of Music plays host and Rainer's hand is SAT held during the preparation by the college's expert Chris SAT Moulton. Arne Gieshoff and William Cole, two RCM students, SAT also take part playing their own short pieces for the SAT prepared piano and talking about how they have been SAT influenced by Cage. The programme is illustrated by works SAT from Cage himself. SAT SAT First broadcast in September 2012. Today she SAT performs two works with literary inspiration: Schumann's SAT collection of minature 'Butterflies' is derived from the SAT final scene from Jean Paul's novel 'Flegeljahre' which is SAT set at a masked ball and tells of unfulfilled love and SAT psychological transformations which are echoed in the SAT musical transformations of the piece. The second of Liszt's SAT Petrach Sonnets also takes a literary starting point in the SAT poetry of the 14th-century Italian humanist whose 104th SAT Sonnet bemoans an unattainable love. The Tchaikovsky Grand SAT Sonata which ends the recital has no extra-musical SAT inspiration but this 30-minute work of symphonic proportions SAT should really be better known and in the hands of Leonskaja SAT has surely found a ready and persuasive advocate. In this, SAT the second programme, he offers a selection of recordings SAT that reflect the story of his priceless violin - the SAT wonderful 1742 Guarneri del Gesu, known as the "Ex- SAT Lipinski". SAT SAT The violin was once owned by the 19th century virtuoso Karol SAT Józef Lipiński, a rival to the great Paganini. He was a SAT friend of Schumann and Liszt, and Schumann dedicated his SAT virtuosic set of piano character pieces, "Carnival", to SAT Lipiński. After Lipiński, the violin arrived in the hands of SAT the late 19th Century's richest Russian, Nikolay Yusupov, SAT one of the country's most celebrated artistic benefactors SAT and a close friend of Pushkin, and from there to a founder SAT member of the Joachim String Quartet, who gave Johannes SAT Brahms some of his first performances. Also in the list is SAT the man who is best remebered today for arranging and naming SAT a celebrated orchestral movement from Bach, "Air on a G SAT String". He was the violinist August Wilhelmj. SUN SUN When putting together this mix of texts and music my aim was SUN to create one single meditative arch, as it were, in which SUN expressions coming from four different religions and SUN cultures would combine seamlessly becoming one, in the true SUN spirit of humanity. SUN SUN Finding ancient mystic texts coming from about the same SUN period, in this case the 12th and 13th centuries, became a SUN focus for me as I wanted to explore a sense of perspective SUN through the ages together with the timelessness of the SUN message. SUN SUN My starting point was the work of Hildegard of Bingen, the SUN German Saint and Abbess, who had the perfect credentials for SUN this endeavour as she wrote both music and verses praising SUN God and exalting the spirit. Next, I thought of Rumi, the SUN celebrated Persian Sufi poet already with a massive SUN following in the West. Then my attention switched to Jehuda SUN Halevi, a poet and philosopher from the rich tradition of SUN Sephardic humanists that emerged in Spain over many SUN centuries. No anthology of this nature would be complete SUN without a Buddhist perspective and when researching for SUN suitable ancient verses I came across the remarkable work of SUN Jetsun Milarepa, one of the most revered monks and thinkers SUN in Tibet. SUN SUN As for the music, well, the perfect match had to be SUN devotional music, music originally used in the context of SUN religious service and prayer, which accounts for much of the SUN pieces selected here, some of them even field recordings, SUN rather rough but full of energy and passion, with SUN musicians/practitioners caught while at their task. In a way SUN this honours the tradition of ‘contemplation through music’ SUN I so wanted to explore. With this sound tapestry being made SUN over the centuries from such different cultural landscapes SUN like Germany, Persia, Tibet and the Iberian Peninsula, my SUN hope is that they offer enough contrast, within the same SUN spiritual journey, making it a unique experience. SUN SUN I’m aware that this programme will primarily appeal to those SUN who believe in the spiritual dimension of the human soul. SUN For those who perhaps hold different views I hope it SUN provides an oasis of calm and peace in our today’s busy SUN lives. SUN SUN 19:45 Sunday Feature b01s46xc (Listen) SUN Along the Highland River SUN SUN Neil Gunn's novel, 'Highland River', explores a northern SUN river and its impact on a boy's life. Poet Kenneth Steven SUN sets off to find the source of the river and Gunn's SUN inspiration. SUN SUN 'Highland River' is set in Caithness in the far north of the SUN Scottish mainland. The actual river on which the story is SUN based is Dunbeath Water, and the novel explores the lives of SUN those who live in and around the area. Kenneth Steven has SUN always been fascinated by the story, and travels to Dunbeath SUN to retrace the steps of the central character of the novel, SUN himself called Kenn. SUN SUN This is a wild and extraordinary landscape, where the SUN sheltered corners of the strath soon give way to open SUN peatland moors, known in Caithness as the 'flow country'. In SUN Gunn's novel, Kenn makes a journey from the coast inland, to SUN find the source of the river in the flow country. It becomes SUN symbolic of both what has been lost and what has endured. SUN SUN With its imaginative depiction of Kenn's childhood in SUN Dunbeath, the horrors of the First World War, and his return SUN to Caithness, this is a story which has deep resonance for SUN communities across the highlands of Scotland. SUN Kenneth Steven explores the lasting significance of SUN 'Highland River', whilst setting himself the challenge of SUN reaching the river's source. Meyerbeer's first two Parisian TUE productions were of operas he had composed during his time TUE in Italy, but before long he was being commissioned to write TUE something brand new for the temple of French music drama - TUE the Opéra. This was Robert le diable, Robert the devil, the TUE tale of a childless woman to whom the devil grants her TUE dearest wish - a son. Robert is a bad boy who eventually TUE repents, but not before he's got up to some mischief, TUE including a graveyard encounter with a pack of zombie nuns, TUE whose ballet shocked and thrilled the Paris of 1831 - and, TUE in due course, cities across the globe. Chopin pronounced TUE the opera a masterpiece, Berlioz praised its orchestration, TUE and Liszt was so taken with it that he composed a fantasy on TUE its themes: Réminiscences de Robert le diable. Meyerbeer's TUE next opera opened to an expectant house on the 29th of TUE February 1836. To say that audiences were not disappointed TUE with Les Huguenots, a tale of political and religious TUE conflict that must have struck a clanging chord in that age TUE of revolutions, would be putting it mildly; it went on to TUE become probably the most successful opera of the 19th TUE century, and its influence can be felt in works as disparate TUE as Die Meistersinger, Don Carlo and Khovanshchina. For Renaud Capuçon, TUE individuality in music is everything: he has said "When you TUE listen to those old recordings of great violinists you hear TUE that they use their right arm a lot as a way of expression, TUE where currently many young violinists are using the left TUE hand instead, which makes their play less personal. Hearing TUE this new generation on for instance the radio you don't TUE recognise them." TUE TUE The Wigmore Hall's Fauré Project explores a composer whose TUE lifetime saw huge changes in musical language, but whose own TUE musical voice remained constant and distinctive. His TUE innovative approach to harmony and fresh treatment of melody TUE can be heard in his youthful First Piano Quartet, which TUE dates from the 1870s. He composed his sublime Piano Trio in TUE D minor in 1923, the year before he died at the age of 79. TUE TUE Doubt in science is tonight's subject in a series of Essays TUE on The Case for Doubt, in which five contributors argue that TUE doubt is a valuable and meaningful strength, and not a TUE crippling and negative weakness. TUE TUE Baroness Susan Greenfield, a scientist who specialises in TUE the physiology of the brain, argues that doubt among TUE scientists should be 'as natural as breathing', even when TUE breakthroughs occur, and that doubt in science should be TUE integral not so much to what scientists do, as to how they TUE think. This turned out to be Le prophète, first staged in THU 1849, which itself proved to be a pillar of the operatic THU repertoire until well into the 20th century. Like Les THU Huguenots, Le prophète has a basis in historical fact - an THU Anabaptist revolt that took place in Münster in the 1530s, THU doubtless given added resonance to first-run audiences by THU the European-wide unrest of the previous year. Add to this THU Meyerbeer's most impressively through-composed music to THU date, the opera's epic scale, and the no-expenses-spared THU production of the Paris Opéra - including a ballet danced on THU specially designed roller skates (to simulate the effect of THU dancing on ice) and the first theatrical use of an electric THU arc lamp (to simulate a sunrise) - and it's no surprise that THU audiences didn't know what had hit them. Perhaps the THU composer realized that he had gone as far as he could in THU this direction, because for his next operatic project, THU L'étoile du nord, he turned instead to the gentler medium of THU comic opera. Lawrence Power has proved a FRI persuasive champion of York Bowen's gloriously romantic FRI Viola Concerto, written for Lionel Tertis in 1908, and this FRI provides the emotional core for a concert lit with ribald FRI humour. Walton's ingenious 'comedy overture' Scapino, an FRI exhilarating orchestral showpiece, finds a spirited echo in FRI Vaughan Williams's earthy Five Tudor Portraits. Setting FRI texts by Henry VIII's one-time tutor John Skelton, Vaughan FRI Williams conjures up fives vivid character sketches, from FRI the drunken Elinor Rumming to the charming Pretty Bess, a FRI scherzo for the tattered Jolly Rutterkin, and Jane Scroop's FRI heartfelt Requiem to her pet sparrow. FRI FRI 20:20 Discovering Music b01s369s (Listen) FRI Vaughan Williams's Five Tudor Portraits FRI FRI Stephen Johnson explores Vaughan Williams's Five Tudor FRI Portraits. FRI It was Edward Elgar who suggested that Vaughan Williams FRI might enjoy the verse of the Tudor poet John Skelton. When FRI he read the poems, it's clear that Vaughan Williams was FRI impressed by them and when he came to set a selection of FRI Skelton's work as Five Tudor Portraits, he responded to the FRI jazz-like qualities in the metre, making inventive use of FRI the poet's colourful language. FRI FRI "Self-doubt that leads to resolution of the doubts can be a FRI remarkable source of energy and creativity". FRI FRI In the last of five Essays making The Case for Doubt, FRI journalist and broadcaster Alastair Campbell, acknowledging FRI his reputation as a hard man while Tony Blair's spokesman FRI and strategist, admits that self-doubt has always been an FRI essential part of his make-up. But reflecting on Galileo's FRI assertion that self-doubt is 'the father of all invention', FRI he argues that it should be a creative rather than a FRI crippling experience. FRI FRI This ends the series The Case for Doubt, in which five FRI contributors have argued that Doubt - though sometimes FRI troubling - is meaningful and valuable, and not negative and FRI weak.
