He was a baby at theSUNRestoration of Charles II to the throne, but would haveSUNknown the Great Plague and Great Fire of London. InSUNadulthood, he would have seen both the accession and theSUNforced abdication of James II in the Glorious RevolutionSUNof 1688 as well as the coronation of James's daughter MarySUNand her husband William of Orange.SUNSUNReadings include excerpts from Pepys, Evelyn, Dryden,SUNAphra Behn and Defoe, while the music includes Purcell andSUNhis contemporaries alongside works from the 20th century.SUNSUNThe first known usage of the phrase 'Annus Mirabilis',SUNor 'Year of Wonders' came in John Dryden's poem ofSUNthat title in 1666. It was actually a year of greatSUNcalamity for England, with the Great Fire of London,SUNalthough there was also a great sea victory against theSUNDutch. The composer Henry Purcell would have been a childSUNof 6 or 7 at the time, and his life spanned someSUNparticularly momentous events in English history.SUNSUNPurcell was born in 1659, and the following year saw theSUNRestoration to the throne of Charles II. Samuel Pepys wasSUNon the same boat as the King as he arrived at Dover toSUNgreat public acclaim. But the diarist makes sure that weSUNrealise Charles was indeed a mere mortal, having a simpleSUNbreakfast of boiled beef and being the indulgent owner ofSUNa badly behaved dog...Dryden takes the King's journey onSUNto his coronation, with all the hopes of a new and betterSUNage.SUNSUNA few years later a strange new comet was seen in the skySUN- Pepys tried his best to see it, eventually succeeding,SUNand then a new one appeared... With the benefit ofSUNhindsight these were interpreted as being terrible omensSUNpresaging the Great Plague of 1665 and the Fire of 1666.SUNDaniel Defoe, writing some 60 years later, would only haveSUNbeen 5 at the time of the plague, but provides anSUNinsightful and chilling account of that dreadful time.SUNSUNIn 1666 the diarist John Evelyn describes a site visit toSUNthe old St Paul's with, among others, Sir ChristopherSUNWren, in which they discussed the rickety structure of theSUNold church and the possibility of designing a new-fangledSUNcupola instead of a steeple. But less than a month later,SUNthe proposed demolition was somewhat overtaken by eventsSUN- the outbreak of the Great Fire. Pepys gives his usualSUNthorough account of the scene, not forgetting even theSUNpoor pigeons who were loth to leave their perches and wereSUNsinged, while Dryden compares the progress of the fire toSUNthe calculated campaign of a pillaging tyrant.SUNSUNWhile many were quick to ascribe the horrors of diseaseSUNand fire to the sinful ways of London's court and indeedSUNgeneral population, the year 1666 also saw an outbreak ofSUNrationality and rigorous investigation. As Isaac NewtonSUNsat in his Lincolnshire garden one day, (having had toSUNleave Cambridge University owing to an outbreak of plagueSUNthere), he observed the falling of an apple...Years laterSUNhe was to describe this, his own annus mirabilis, in whichSUNhe began to get to grips with calculus, optics and the lawSUNof gravitation.SUNSUNIn 1688 Purcell would have seen another great wonder ofSUNhis age - a (nearly) bloodless revolution as ParliamentSUNoverthrew the pro-Catholic James II and replaced him asSUNmonarch with his daughter Mary and her husband, WilliamSUNof Orange. We end with a paean of praise to the new QueenSUNby Aphra Behn, and leave the new monarchs at theirSUNcoronation the following year, amid fresh hopes for peace,SUNhealth and prosperity.SUNSUNThe words of the period are surrounded with the music ofSUNthe age - coronation anthems, secular songs, andSUNinstrumental sonatas in the fast developing baroque styleSUN- it was a good time for English music, crowned bySUNPurcell, and influenced by visiting composers from otherSUNlands, especially Italy. But there is also music from ourSUNown times reflecting the terror and turbulence of theSUNperiod - Ligeti's unearthly Lux Aeterna underscoresSUNthe strangeness of the ominous comets, and Varese'sSUNArcana seems to echo the inexorable menace of the progressSUNof the Great Fire as described by Pepys and Dryden.SUNSUNElizabeth Funning ProducerSUNSUNRunning OrderSUNSUNJuliet Stevenson (JS) Kenneth Cranham (KC)SUNSUN00.00.00SUNPurcell : Cibell Fine Arts Brass EnsembleSUNNimbus NI 5546 Tr 10SUN00.01.03SUNLocke : Aire from Theatre Suite The FlautadorsSUNDeux-Elles DXL 1123 Tr 9SUN00.01.10SUNSara Coleridge (1802-52)SUNPart of: Kings of England from the Conquest 1660 (JS)SUN00.01.27SUNSamuel Pepys.
