SAT SAT PHILHARMONIE DE PARIS SAT SAT Last week the new Philharmonie de Paris, a 2,400 seat SAT concert hall, was opened to the public with a gala concert SAT by the Orchestre de Paris attended by President Hollande. SAT The hall, funded by the French Government and the City of SAT Paris, has cost around 380m euros (over double the original SAT estimate) and its construction has been delayed by twenty SAT years. Tom Service visited the Philharmonie on the day of SAT its opening and met the hall’s chief executive Laurent SAT Bayle, artistic director Emmanuel Hondre, the acoustician SAT Christopher Day and the conductor Paavo Jarvi. Tom speaks to SAT Anthony Tommasini, chief classical music critic of The New SAT York Times to get his impressions of the new concert hall SAT and the programming and educational activities it is SAT offering. SAT SAT THE BOGANYI PIANO SAT SAT A new model of piano called the Boganyi was unveiled in SAT Budapest this week. Could its designer, the pianist Gergely SAT Boganyi, have revolutionized piano making for the first time SAT in two hundred years? Bogányi has developed a carbon-fibre SAT soundboard which is sprung and disconnected from the piano SAT frame, resistant to most exterior conditions including heat, SAT humidity, cold, damp and dryness. The piano uses two legs SAT instead of three, which have been shaped to act as an SAT acoustic reflector to enhance the sound. It is possible to SAT sustain a note for longer and the keyboard has been expanded SAT with two extra notes on each side. It is also claimed that SAT this piano can stay in tune longer than others. Tom talks to SAT Gergely Boganyi and to the pianist John Turville who tried SAT this new piano out earlier this week. SAT SAT ELGAR HOWARTH SAT SAT Elgar Howarth has led a multifaceted career as a conductor, SAT composer, arranger, and instrumentalist. He was the son of a SAT brass band conductor and became principal cornetist of his SAT father’s band at the age of fourteen. Whilst studying at the SAT Royal Manchester College of Music he helped form the New SAT Music Manchester Group with his fellow students Harrison SAT Birtwistle, Alexander Goehr, Peter Maxwell Davies and John SAT Ogdon. He pursued a career as a trumpeter – ranging from SAT playing with the RPO through to The Beatles on Magical SAT Mystery Tour. He took over the conductorship of the SAT Grimethorpe Colliery Band and whilst there expanded the SAT repertoire beyond the traditional brass band fare. Ligeti, SAT chose Howarth to conduct the Stockholm premiere of his opera SAT Le Grande Macabre, which led to conducting a succession of SAT works by Birtwistle including Mask of Orpheus, Gawain and SAT The Second Mrs. Kong. As well as brass band compositions SAT Howarth has also written orchestral works and concertos. SAT Howarth speaks to Tom Service about his roots in brass SAT bands, playing under Rudolf Kempe, conducting Strauss at SAT Garsington and above all his life-long advocacy of new SAT music. SAT SAT Robert Wyatt, born January 28th 1945, initially started his SAT musical career in the mid-sixties as drummer in the famous SAT Canterbury group the Wilde Flowers and then went on to SAT co-found The Soft Machine, named after the 1961 novel by SAT William Burroughs, one of the most popular bands of the late SAT sixties psychedelic movement. Apollo, with SUN his golden curls and athletic beauty is the God of Light. He SUN personifies Reason and Harmony. Dionysus, with vine leaves SUN in his tangled hair, is the God of Wine and he represents SUN Chaos and Ecstasy unchecked by Reason. Are you Apollonian or SUN a Dionysian? If you're not sure, perhaps this edition of SUN Words and Music will help you to make up your mind. SUN SUN Producer: Philippa Ritchie. SUN SUN Producer’s Note SUN SUN Although Apollo and Dionysus are both sons of Zeus, they are SUN completely different. Apollo is the God of light and the SUN sun. He is the leader of the Muses, so he’s connected with SUN music, poetry and art. Dionysus, or Bacchus as the Romans SUN called him, is the God of wine and ecstasy and madness. But SUN he too is associated the arts, with music and theatre in SUN particular. SUN SUN Scholars have portrayed Apollo as a symbol of harmony and SUN reason and Dionysus as representative of the libido and SUN gratification. The dichotomy between the Apollonian and SUN Dionysian was famously analysed by Nietzsche in his essay SUN The Birth of Tragedy. A much earlier writer to depict the SUN tension between our rational minds and our primitive urges SUN was Euripides, whose play The Bacchae was first performed in SUN 405 BCE. It is a vivid dramatization of what happens when SUN we deny our basic instincts - when Apollonian restraint SUN tries to deny the Dionysian libido. It is the tension in SUN all of us between the rational and the irrational, between SUN restraint and release, that I wanted to explore musically SUN and verbally in this programme. SUN SUN The first thing I had to consider was whether music could be SUN divided into the Apollonian and the Dionysian and if so, SUN what were the main features of each style? I started by SUN looking at Stravinsky and his score for the ballet Apollo SUN (originally entitled Apollo Musagetes) which was SUN choreographed by Balanchine. The work was composed in SUN 1927/28, during his neo-Classical period. In his Poetics of SUN Music, Stravinsky said of Apollo “What is important for the SUN lucid ordering of the work – for its crystallization – is SUN that all the Dionysian elements which set the imagination of SUN the artist in motion and make the life-sap rise must be SUN properly subjugated before they intoxicate us, and must SUN finally be made to submit to the law: Apollo demands it." SUN He conceived it as a ‘ballet blanc’, a classical ballet in SUN which all the dancers wear white – as in Giselle or the SUN ‘white act’ of Swan Lake. SUN SUN According to Balanchine, when he heard Stravinsky’s music SUN all he could see was pristine white. The choreography he SUN created for the piece was completely abstract and avoided SUN any hint of story or psychological expression and it was SUN staged in an austere modernist style. There is a SUN tranquillity and objectivity to the ballet that is far SUN removed from the dissonant, rhythmic and primitive-sounding SUN score he wrote fourteen years earlier for Nijinsky’s ballet SUN The Rites of Spring. That ballet depicts the primitive SUN rituals celebrating spring, ending with the sacrifice of a SUN young woman, ‘the Chosen Maiden’. It seemed to me that SUN Stravinsky’s Apollo music is purely Apollonian, whereas The SUN Rite of Spring is purely Dionysian – but you may disagree. SUN I decided to start and finish the programme with extracts SUN from Stravinsky’s Apollo, but sandwiched in between are SUN plenty of seductive pieces of Dionysian music, including an SUN extract from The Rites of Spring. SUN SUN I wondered whether musical instruments themselves could be SUN divided into the Apollonian or Dionysian. The lyre was SUN famously Apollo’s instrument and the aulos was associated SUN with Dionysus. The aulos was a wind instrument, a bit SUN similar to a flute but with a reed mouthpiece. I found it SUN quite difficult to associate the delicacy of a wind SUN instrument with wild Bacchic orgies, though it was easy to SUN associate the plangency of the lyre with Apollo. The aulos SUN came from the East, whereas the Greeks invented the lyre, so SUN it may be that the difference between the instruments SUN symbolised the difference between indigenous and Oriental SUN culture. To me stringed instruments tend to sound SUN Apollonian, whereas drums and brass feel Bacchic. And I SUN also can’t help feeling that melody is essentially Apollo’s SUN territory whereas rhythm belongs to Bacchus. The music I SUN have chosen to represent Dionysus in the programme tends to SUN be rhythmic, lower and louder whereas that representing SUN Apollo is sweeter, less dissonant and more measured. SUN SUN Near the end of the programme I have included an extract SUN from Britten’s opera Death in Venice, (based on the Thomas SUN Mann novella) where the central character of von Aschenbach SUN falls asleep and is visited by both Apollo and Dionysus who SUN proceed to give him conflicting advice. Dionysus urges von SUN Aschenbach “do not turn away from life . . . do not refuse SUN the mysteries” while Apollo warns him to “reject the abyss . SUN . . be ruled by me and my laws.” Aschenbach cries out “Do SUN what you will with me!” and the scene ends there. In the SUN next scene it becomes clear which god has won possession of SUN the hero’s soul. SUN SUN Most of us contain elements of both gods within our natures SUN and the trick is probably to try and keep a balance between SUN the two. SUN SUN 18:45 Sunday Feature b0505m8k (Listen) SUN Beautiful Death SUN SUN Vienna is a city that celebrates death like no other SUN culture. Death is a friend that stays with us from birth SUN until death. Only in Vienna is there an idea of 'beautiful SUN death'. SUN SUN Stephen Johnson connects Mahler's beliefs about death to SUN contemporaneous Viennese funeral customs, and particularly SUN the idea of 'schöner Tod' - a 'beautiful death'. He visits SUN both the grand and intriguing Central Cemetery in Vienna, SUN which is the largest necropolis in Europe, and also the more SUN intimate cemetery in Grinzing where Mahler is buried. SUN SUN Stephen talks to Professor Julian Johnson about Mahler's SUN fear of death and the many guises in which death appears in SUN his music, and he relates what we know of Mahler's attitude SUN to death to evidence from Dr Wittigo Keller, an expert on SUN Viennese funeral customs, and Dr Isabella Ackerl, the author SUN of a book on Vienna and the idea of beautiful death. Mahler SUN was terrified of being buried alive and Stephen finds out SUN just how often this actually happened in Mahler's Vienna SUN from Dr Eduard Winter at the Narrenturm, which is now the SUN pathological wing of Vienna's Natural History Museum. SUN SUN Viennese folk music was also permeated with tales of death SUN and Stephen visit Agnes Palmisano, a renowned singer of SUN Wienerlied, at her heuriger in Grinzing to discuss the SUN influence that these songs may have had on Mahler's death SUN music. Freudian psychoanalyst Dr Jeanne Wolff Bernstein SUN sheds light of what Freud may have meant in his theory of SUN the death instinct and Stephen connects these beliefs to SUN Mahler's 'Das Lied von der Erde'. SUN SUN Mahler's unfinished 10th Symphony bookends the programme, SUN and there are also clips from the Funeral March of his 5th SUN Symphony, his 4th and 9th Symphonies, Kindertotenlieder (the SUN songs on the death of children) and Das Lied von der Erde. SUN Special location recordings of Agnes Palmisano with Walter SUN Stoyka and friends in their heuriger, and from Die Strottern SUN in their garden, clarify the influence of Viennese folk SUN music on Mahler's own death music. SUN SUN Shaw's Saint Joan is the embodiment of absolute conviction. SUN Given, as she believes, a divine mission to lead the French SUN to victory and nationhood, she is also divinely forbidden to SUN shed a single drop of blood. Her only weapon is her belief, SUN and the courage it puts into those around her. In Joan, Shaw SUN presents us with a character of remarkable talent and SUN unshakeable faith - but no grace - and reveals her fate at SUN the hands of normal men and women who, as Shaw notes, do SUN what they find they must do, in spite of their best SUN intentions. Joan's convictions are contagious. They make her SUN an unstoppable force. They also lead her to destruction. SUN 'There were only two opinions about her', Shaw observes in SUN his preface to the play, 'One that she was miraculous: the SUN other that she was unbearable.' SUN SUN Joan of Arc was canonised in 1920, a fact which galvanised SUN Shaw to complete the play with which he had long been SUN toying. A humane masterpiece, full of comedy, outrage, SUN satire and anger, it examines the seismic changes in SUN medieval society of which Joan was a precursor, for an SUN audience themselves struggling with a shocking new post-war SUN order. An immediate success, the play restored Shaw to SUN universal popularity, helping him to the Nobel Prize for SUN Literature in 1925, as the Academy observed, "for his work SUN which is marked by both idealism and humanity, its SUN stimulating satire often being infused with a singular SUN poetic beauty". Idomeneo thinks he can forget his obligation but MON Neptune thinks otherwise and, to help jog Idomeneo's memory, MON sends a monster to ravage Crete. MON MON Add to that the de rigueur love triangle (Idamante is loved MON by Trojan princess Ilia and Greek princess Elettra; he loves MON Ilia but not Elettra, which makes her cross) and you have a MON standard eighteenth-century opera plot that could so easily MON have fallen into the hands of any hack composer. MON MON Happily for us, it came the way of a certain 24-year-old MON Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart who, desperate to show what he could MON do, threw everything he had at it. MON MON The result was exceptional, even in Mozart's peerless MON operatic output. MON MON In this first of the series, historian Professor Jeremy MON Black gives an overall view of the castle as an instrument MON of power and control, built to withstand siege warfare - a MON lesson which, by the eighteenth century, had been all but MON forgotten. At the height of the Jacobite Rebellion one MON Scottish lord had cause to regret having removed the iron MON bars from his castle windows, and weakening the walls by MON adding graceful wings to his residence. Would his stone MON residence survive the onslaught of the rebels? As Professor MON Black argues, he had forgotten the primary function of a MON castle, namely to to maintain the rule of force and MON government in Britain. Castles, whether built of timber, or MON stone, or both, were intended to promote a powerful symbol MON of authority over society. That they came to be built MON throughout the British Isles was the result of a remarkable MON public-private partnership - although as later events would MON show, it was never wise for monarchs, or governments, to MON entrust too much power into private hands. Britain's MON fortifications would eventually be monopolised by the state, MON who by the eighteenth century set greater store by the Royal MON Navy than by stone walls. But who exactly designed TUE them? And who managed this massive construction project? In TUE general, little is known about the lives and careers of TUE medieval master masons - the equivalent of today's TUE architects. However, as architectural historian Dr Nicola TUE Coldstream argues, we are fortunate in the case of these TUE particular castles to be able to follow the careers of two TUE men in particular: Master James of Savoy, and Master Hugh of TUE Chester. In recent years, much has been made of Master TUE James' architectural genius, a man drafted in from the TUE continent to help bring Edward's project into being. TUE However, as Dr Coldstream argues, Master James' knowledge TUE has been exaggerated. Instead, it appears more likely that TUE his genius lay more in project management than in castle TUE design. Not that that was any lesser task: overseeing TUE various building sites, where thousands of craftsmen were TUE deployed, was no sinecure. There is little doubt that the TUE King valued both James' and Hugh's efforts: they were TUE privileged to have audience with the king, and it is TUE possible that Edward had some involvement in the design of TUE the castles by which he would seal his conquest of the Welsh TUE people. Archaeologist Prof. THU Robert Gilchrist is keen to correct this imbalance, and THU argues that traditional interpretations of castles ignore THU the gendered spaces - the gardens, the apartments, the THU kitchens where female servants cooked, or indeed the THU adjoining parklands where aristocratic women occasionally THU hunted. There is abundant evidence that women gave birth in THU castles, and also had a hand in interior design, improving THU both plumbing and décor. Moreover, some women played a key THU role in the defence of medieval castles, in the absence of THU the lord. FRI FRI 22:45 The Essay b0506knt (Listen) FRI The Fall and Rise of the British Castle, Castles in Concrete FRI FRI The grim, concrete forts and pillboxes of the east coast of FRI England may seem a far cry from the romantic ruins of FRI Britain's medieval castles. But as writer Ken Worpole FRI argues, they have earned their place in the East Anglian FRI landscape, and should be both preserved, and treasured as FRI reminders of our past, just as much as ivy-clad castles and FRI castle ruins from the high middle ages. As somebody who was FRI born in wartime in a castle (his mother was a refugee from FRI the East End) it was perhaps inevitable that Ken would be FRI drawn to play as a child in the redundant forts of Essex, FRI where his imagination could roam riot - unlike the FRI out-of-bounds medieval castle down the road! But the link FRI with medieval castles isn't coincidental. The architecture FRI of many of these forts (and the architecture of the Martello FRI towers constructed to defend the coast during the Napoleonic FRI wars) builds on the legacy of medieval military design, and FRI in turn would go on to influence brutalist architecture of FRI the 1950s onwards. In France, such military structures as FRI the Atlantic Wall, are stark reminders of an era many would FRI prefer to forget, and there have been calls for these FRI concrete 'monstrosities' to be removed from the landscape. FRI But, as Worpole argues, this would the equivalent of FRI removing medieval castles from the landscape. The power of FRI ruins resides in their ability to set the imagination free, FRI and at the same time grounding people in the reality of past FRI lives, and of earlier generations' hopes and tribulations.
