After studying and working in the United StatesSATand Australia, he moved to Hoy, the most dramatic of theSATOrkney islands, in 1971. He moved to the flatter landscapeSATof Sanday a few years ago.SATSATAt HomeSATSATMax shows Tom around his home on the west coast of Sanday,SATwhere he lives with his partner, Colin Parkinson, andSATtheir dog Judy. Starting in the study, Tom asks Max aboutSATthe objects around the house which provide clues to hisSATmusic – from the fossils and religious icons near hisSATdesk, to the 3D collages which he makes as part of theSATcompositional process for new pieces.SATSATMax reflects on his childhood growing up during the SecondSATWorld War – on how the memories, and the sound of theSATfoxtrot, have stayed with him. He plays Tom one of hisSATpiano pieces written for his partner Colin, and ColinSATtells the story of how he and Max first met.SATSATOn The BeachSATSATDuring a windy, and wet, walk on the coral white beach atSATStart Point on Sanday, Max explains to Tom some of theSATinspirations behind his music, how he maps out his musicSATin minute detail on the landscape and seascape – and onSATthe movements of seals – whilst on his daily walks withSATJudy, and how he manipulates time to work on transitionsSATwhich end up as a few seconds in performance, but takeSATtwenty minutes to stride out on the beach.SATSATMagicSATSATBack at home, Max and Tom talk about the role ofSATspirituality in his music, and about the ancient iconsSATabove each door in his house, placed there to ward offSATevil spirits. And he tells Tom how his beliefs, his strongSATopinions on social and political issues – from the IraqSATwar to climate change – and his relationships, areSATinseparable from the music he writes.SATSATSAT13:00 The Early Music Show b00n6t8d (Listen)SATCarl Heinrich GraunSATCatherine Bott delves into the life and the intriguingSATmusic of mid-18th century German composer Carl HeinrichSATGraun - not necessarily a famous name these days, but inSAThis time, along with Hasse, considered to be the mostSATimportant German composer of Italian opera.SATSATAs a young man, Graun had his fingers in many musicalSATpies, and by the time he reached his early 20s, was anSATaccomplished singer, cellist, keyboard-player andSATcomposer. He spent nine happy years in the service of theSATDuke of Brunswick, where, in 1733, he came onto PrinceSATFrederick of Prussia's radar, and before long, Graun wasSATgiven a plum job at Frederick's court. Soon after that,SATthe music-loving Prince Frederick acceded to the throne,SATand, as Frederick the Great, began to challenge the worldSATon all fronts. While the new emperor prepared his armiesSATto invade Silesia, his trusty Kapellmeister Graun set offSATto scout the opera houses of Italy and bring back the bestSATtalent to Berlin.SATSATFrederick was an ardent opera enthusiast and wasSATdetermined to turn Berlin into an international operaticSATcentre. To that end, he commissioned two new stages fromSATarchitect and painter George Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff,SATboth inaugurated within 12 months of one another, with newSATproductions of operas by Graun. The first was Graun'sSATsetting of Rodelinda for the theatre at the royalSATresidence in the Berliner Stadtschloss, and the second, inSATDecember 1742, was for the opera house in central Berlin,SATat Unter den Linden, which opened to huge critical praiseSATSATGraun's music expresses the moving, the tender and theSATimploring; his simplification of certain aspects of theSAToperatic structure, like the arioso (a style of singingSATsomewhere between aria and recitative) and even ballet,SATpoint to the next generation of composers, especially theSATmost famous 18th-century musical reformer of all - Gluck.SATSATGraun: Herr, ich habe lieb die Statte deines HausesSATL'arpa Festante Basler MadrigalistenSATFritz Naf (conductor) CPO 777 158-2 Tr 12SATSATGraun: Trio in C for viola da gamba, keyboard and continuoSAT(3rd mvt) Philippe Pierlot (viola da gamba)SATRicercar Consort RICERCAR RIC 047025 Tr 12SATSATGraun: Pompe vane di morte (Rodelinda)SATNathalie Stutzman (contralto) The Hanover BandSATRoy Goodman (director) RCA 09026 61903-2 Tr 4SATSATGraun: Overture (Cleopatre and Cesare) Concerto KolnSATRene Jacobs (director)SATHARMONIA MUNDI HMC 901561.63 Disc 1 Tr 1SATSATGraun: Ecco mio Ben l'istante (Cleopatre and Cesare)SATCleopatra ...... The first wasSUNwritten in 1923 when the 17-year-old composer was aSUNstudent at the St Petersburg Conservatoire. At that time,SUNShostakovich often played music to accompany films at aSUNlocal cinema, and his sister remembers Shostakovich beingSUNbooed and whistled by the paying audience when he and hisSUNfriends tried playing the trio along to the movies.SUNSUNA recording of the slow movement of Shostakovich's secondSUNtrio was played at the composer's memorial service inSUN1975; it's a much more mature work, full of emotion, butSUNalso full of sardonic humour: grotesqueries which act asSUNthinly-veiled stabs at the Soviet dictatorship of JozefSUNStalin. It also contains some fascinating Jewish music inSUNthe finale - something Shostakovich had been particularlySUNintrigued by in his middle years.SUNSUNThe programme ends with a complete performance by TheSUNKungsbacka Trio, of Shostakovich's Piano Trio No 2 in ESUNminor, Op 67.SUNSUN18:30 The Choir b00n6tj1 (Listen)SUNIberian and Latin American Choral MusicSUNAled Jones talks to conductor Carlos Fernandez AransaySUNabout Iberian and Latin American choral music from theSUNMiddle Ages to the 21st century. Unlike many utopianSUNschemes, in 1903 Howard managed at least a partialSUNrealisation of his dream - at Letchworth, amid the fieldsSUNof Hertfordshire. But as Tristram discovers, the ideaSUNmutated, and rapidly migrated beyond our shores.SUNSUNHe follows Howard's influence from Letchworth, to west andSUNnorth London, to suburban Paris and on to New Jersey. AndSUNhe finds out how a twisted version of the Garden CitySUNmodel may even have had an unwitting influence on NaziSUNplans for occupied Poland.SUNSUNFinally, Tristram follows the trail back to Britain.SUNAdvocates of government-backed 'ecotowns' see them as aSUNrevival of Howard's Victorian dream of 'a peaceful path toSUNreal reform'. But can they really match Howard'sSUNachievements?SUNSUNWith contributions from Stephen Ward, Sir Peter Hall, MarkSUNSwenarton, Marie-Pierre de Guillaume, JeanetteSUNBate-Tornikian, Mervyn Miller, Louis diGeronimo and GideonSUNAmos.SUNSUN22:15 Words and Music b00n6tl5 (Listen)SUNIllusions of PowerSUNSUNA sequence of poetry, prose and music on the theme ofSUNpower, with readings by Sheila Hancock and Tom Hollander.SUNSUNWith poems from Percy Shelley, Ted Hughes, Rudyard KiplingSUNand Margaret Atwood, as well as music by Prokofiev, LigetiSUNand Handel.SUNSUNPlease note this programme contains strong language.SUNSUNHow real is power? When is it imagined and when is itSUNtrue? Who or what has power over us, our actions, ourSUNminds, bodies and spirit?SUNSUNFrom the might of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana and speechesSUNfrom at times once extraordinarily powerful PrimeSUNMinisters, via the cataclysmic Jonchaies by Xenakis andSUNBlack Sabbath’s The Illusion of Power to Durufle’s settingSUNof Gregorian Chant, Tantum Ergo, venerating the power ofSUNthe Blessed Sacrament, the first five minutes of thisSUNsequence of Words and Music presents authority, control,SUNinfluence and power in many of its forms.SUNSUNMacDougall’s Gathering is a piobaireachd arranged forSUNviola and bronze age horns, and usually played on bagpipesSUNto gather one of the oldest truly Celtic Clans. AnSUNincredibly powerful summoning of clan members from acrossSUNthe highlands around Oban.SUNSUNThe energy of Mosolov’s Iron Foundry is followed by KitSUNWright’s Ode to Didcot Power Station. Wright says that ifSUNhe was going to have an ode, “why not go the whole hog andSUNpull out all the stops with ‘thee’s and ‘thou’s and fairlySUNantiquated language.”SUNSUNSibelius stood in his living room looking out over LakeSUNTuusula watching swans circle his house and which thenSUN‘disappeared into the solar haze like a gleaming silverSUNribbon’. He transformed their flight and movement into theSUNfinale of his fifth symphony. The musicologist DonaldSUNFrancis Tovey compared the ‘swan theme’ to the Norse godSUNThor swinging his hammer.SUNSUNJennifer Rush’s power ballad, The Power of Love wasSUNoriginally on the playlist for this sequence, however, itSUNjust wouldn’t fit, so on the back of the celebration ofSUNthe power of love in Out of the Shadows we have PercySUNGrainger’s The Power of Love. Not quite the same, but itSUNcertainly does the job.SUNSUNMoving slowly and brutally from love through the physicalSUNviolation of Margaret Atwood’s poem to Philip Larkin’sSUNToads - a study of the power work has over us, and ourSUNneed to find employment, rather than our desire.SUNSUNShostakovich appears twice in the programme. The composerSUNof some of the most despairing music written, he was a manSUNwho knew the influence authority and the state could haveSUNon a person. The sequence exploring war and nuclearSUNapocalypse is introduced by his 8th Quartet. It isSUNdedicated to the victims of fascism and war – some saySUNthis is a reference to the victims of totalitarianism,SUNwhile others suggest the dedication was imposed by theSUNauthorities. It has also been reported that ShostakovichSUNthought of the work as his epitaph and that he planned toSUNcommit suicide around this time. The programme draws to aSUNclose with his last symphony. The final movement isSUNequally as dark as the quartet. Shostakovich wasSUNfascinated by time and clocks – his flat in Moscow isSUNstill home to many of his clocks. The ticking of theSUNpercussion brings the symphony’s ghostly coda to a close.SUNCould the thing that has the greatest power over us beSUNtime?SUNSUNJeremy Evans (producer)SUNSUNRunning OrderSUNSUNSH=Sheila Hancock TH=Tom HollanderSUNSUN00:00:00SUNOrff: O Fortuna from Carmina BuranaSUNNew Philharmonia Orchestra Rafael Frühbeck de BurgosSUNEMI CDM 7 69060 2 Track 1SUN00:02:56SUNXenakis: Jonchaies Luxembourg Philharmonic OrchestraSUNArturo Tamayo Timpani 1C1062 Track 1SUN00:02:59SUNRevelation 6:12-16 [King James Version] (SH and TH)SUN00:04:02SUNBlack Sabbath: The Illusion of Power Black SabbathSUNIRS 7243 8 30620 2 7 Track 1SUN00:04:44SUNDuruflé: Tantum ergo from Quatre Motets sur des themesSUNgrégoriens Vasari Singers Jeremy BackhouseSUNSignum SIGCD 163 Track 8SUN00:07:37SUNShelley: Fragment (SH)SUN00:08:14SUNHandel: Ode for the Birthday of Queen AnneSUNRobin Blaze (countertenor) The Academy of Ancient MusicSUNStephen Cleobury (conductor) EMI 7243 5 57140 2 2SUNTrack 16SUN00:11:31SUNTrad arr Bonnie Rideout: MacDougall’s GatheringSUNBonnie Rideout (viola) Simon O’Dwyer (Bronze Age Horns)SUNTM 504 Track 1SUN00:15:40SUNSpiro: The Darkling Plains SpiroSUNRealworld Records CDR 50 37005 00048 8 Track 1SUN00:16:55SUNMaura Stanton: The Conjurer (SH)SUN00:19:06SUNMosolov: Zavod – Iron FoundrySUNRoyal Concertgebouw Orchestra Riccaro ChaillySUNDecca 436 640-2 Track 1SUN00:22:42SUNPink Floyd: Welcome to the Machine Pink FloydSUNCBS 35DP4 Track 1SUN00:22:51SUNKit Wright: Ode to Didcot Power Station (TH)SUN00:25:17SUNSibelius: Symphony No 5 [final movement]SUNLahti Symphony Orchestra Osmo Vanska BIS CD 863SUNTrack 7SUN00:33:16SUNJoseph Seamon, Jr. Cotter: from Out of the Shadows: AnSUNUnfinished Sonnet-Sequence (TH)SUN00:34:18SUNPercy Grainger: The Power of LoveSUNSusan Gritton (soprano) City of London SinfoniaSUNRichard Hickox Chandos CHAN 9653 Track 2SUN00:38:41SUNLigeti: Atmospheres Sudwesfunk OrchestraSUNErnest Bour (conductor) EMI 7243 8 55322 2 1 Track 1SUN00:39:06SUNMargaret Atwood: From: Circe / Mud Poems (SH)SUN00:39:46SUNLuigi Nono: Prometeo, Tragedia dell’ascoltoSUNCol legno WWE 25ACD 20605 CD 2 Track 7SUN00:40:16SUNPhilip Larkin: Toads (TH)SUN00:41:42SUNShostakovich: String Quartet No 8 – 1st mvtSUNThe Shostakovich Quartet Regis 2029SUN00:42:52SUNAmir Gilboa [adapted from Hebrew by Dannie Abse]: BloodSUNnot paint ...
