SAT SAT VALENTINA LISITSA SAT SAT Valentina Lisitsa was the first YouTube star of the SAT Classical Music world. SAT SAT ARNOLD SCHOENBERG’S “A SURVIVOR FROM WARSAW” IN POSTWAR SAT EUROPE SAT SAT Taking the performance and reception of Arnold Schoenberg’s SAT “A Survivor from Warsaw” – for narrator, men’s chorus and SAT orchestra written in 1947 – musicologist Joy H. Calico SAT examines the cultural history of postwar Europe in her new SAT book. Schoenberg’s short composition was written as a SAT tribute to the Holocaust victims of the German Third Reich. SAT Calico looks at the meanings attached to the work as it SAT circulated through Europe during the early Cold War, SAT focusing on West and East Germany, Austria, Norway, Poland SAT and Czechoslovakia. SAT SAT Tom Service spoke to Joy H. Calico and to the musicologist SAT Paul Griffiths about the book and how the reception to the SAT work across Europe gives us an insight into the different SAT cultural attitudes towards the legacy of the Second World SAT War and to the new music of the time. SAT SAT COMPOSER PROFILE: BERND ALOIS ZIMMERMANN SAT SAT As Schoenberg was writing “A Survivor from Warsaw”, a young SAT German composer was beginning to come terms with his own SAT creativity, and his own response to the war in which he had SAT fought. Bernd Alois Zimmermann composed some of the bleakest SAT and boldest visions in 20th century music, in his opera Die SAT Soldaten, his Requiem for a Young Poet, and in his very SAT final piece, Ecclesiastical Action. In the summer of 1970 SAT Zimmermann sent his family away on holiday and committed SAT suicide at his home. SAT SAT Zimmermann’s former pupil, the composer York Holler, SAT musicologist Paul Griffiths and soprano Laura Aikin, who has SAT performed the role of Marie in Die Soldaten, discuss the SAT composer, his pioneering work and his role in shaping the SAT music of the 20th century. SAT SAT 21:30 Between the Ears b0260htd (Listen) SAT Sebald's Apocalyptic Vision SAT SAT This Between the Ears offers an insight into one of the SAT strangest and most original writers of the 20th Century, W. SAT G. Sebald. SAT SAT Polymathic and profound, the intricacies of Sebald's writing SAT cannot be summarised or explained. But this programme hopes SAT to explore a few of the themes that most preoccupied Sebald SAT in his life and writing: in particular, memory, history and SAT landscape. SAT SAT A voluntary emigrant from Germany to England, Sebald settled SAT in East Anglia in 1970. The Rings of Saturn, a book first SAT published in German in 1995, recounts a long walk down the SAT coast, from Somerleyton to Orford. The narrator is a man who SAT seems to be partly based on Sebald himself. SAT SAT Last year, the acclaimed theatre director Katie Mitchell put SAT The Rings of Saturn or Die Ringe des Saturn on stage - not SAT in England but in Cologne, Germany. SAT SAT This programme follows her as she takes her German actors to SAT East Anglia to experience at first-hand the landscape in SAT which Sebald was writing and walking. They explore a SAT coastline, which - as Sebald was acutely aware - looks out SAT towards Germany, across what used to be known until the late SAT 19th century as "the German Ocean". SAT SAT The trip along the coast precipitates the actors' personal SAT reflections and memories of their grandparents' generation SAT during the Second World War and the way the history of that SAT time has been handed down to them. SAT SAT The programme introduces The Rings of Saturn through SAT beautiful readings by the actor Stephen Dillane, SAT interspersed with music by composer Paul Clark, and sounds SAT recorded on the Suffolk coastline; but it also shows SAT Sebald's contemporary importance in a world in which the SAT significance of history, time and place can so easily be SAT dismissed. SAT SAT First broadcast in June 2013. MON MON 12:00 Composer of the Week b00r89nc (Listen) MON Thomas Arne (1710-1778), Introducing Dr Arne MON MON Eighteenth Century Britain: Majesty, Music and Mischief MON MON Donald Macleod introduces us to Dr Arne, musical prodigy, MON unscrupulous businessman and bad husband; composer of some MON of Britain's most enduring music including Last Night of the MON Proms favourite, 'Rule Britannia'. MON MON Thomas Arne is remembered today, if he's remembered at all, MON by just a handful of popular songs. Even so, these are some MON of Britain's most enduring melodies. 'Rule Britannia' has MON its annual outing at the Last Night of the Proms, and his MON setting of Shakespeare's 'Where the bee sucks' remains the MON best known of the very many versions of that song. The MON lasting appeal of these tunes gives us just a hint of the MON fame and popularity he enjoyed as one of London's most MON successful stage composers in the 18th century. He had a MON knack for entertaining the city's well-to-do middle-classes, MON and wasn't afraid to pander to their more low-brow tastes if MON that was what put bums on seats. MON MON His friends and colleagues, while full of praise for his MON art, scorned his ungentlemanly character. His MON self-cultivated image as a 'man of pleasure' was combined MON with an unscrupulous head for business that Arne inherited MON from his father. We can all too easily imagine him drooling MON with anticipation, as he took under his wing yet another MON talented young actress, dreaming of the riches her voice MON might bring him. His reputation as a lecher and a bad MON husband did him no favours, though, and rather tarnished his MON professional career. MON History has not been kind to his memory. The masques and MON plays that served as vehicles for his music were not MON designed for posterity and much of his legacy has been lost. MON Plus, he had the misfortune to live and work alongside MON England's brightest musical genius, George Frederick Handel, MON whose brilliance consigned a whole generation of British MON composers to shadowy obscurity. Nevertheless, even though MON his story is full of missing chapters, Arne is revealed as MON one British music's most vibrant characters. In five essays this Easter MON Week, journalist Madeleine Bunting dissects the impact of MON that decline. MON MON Hers is a more sanguine view than Arnold's. His lament for MON the loss of religious belief has proved misplaced, she MON argues; instead, uncertainty and doubt 'can be rich ground MON for joy, love and light'. However, the poem remains MON important, having come to symbolise the dramatic loss of MON faith over the last century. MON MON Each essay looks at one of the ideas which dominated Western MON culture for 2000 years - salvation, redemption, sin, MON sacrifice - and are now part of 'the retreating roar', and MON she asks: what happens to them? Do they disappear, or MON migrate and translate into new forms? 'The loss of God has MON been a defining feature of Western democracy, so how does MON one take stock and reckon with this extraordinary phenomenon MON in all its ramifications from the most personal issues of MON meaning and purpose, to the collapse of institutions?' TUE TUE Thomas Arne is remembered today, if he's remembered at all, TUE by just a handful of popular songs. Even so, these are some TUE of Britain's most enduring melodies. 'Rule Britannia' has TUE its annual outing at the Last Night of the Proms, and his TUE setting of Shakespeare's 'Where the bee sucks' remains the TUE best known of the very many versions of that song. TUE TUE How does a faith decline? What have we lost and what have we TUE gained? Do the central beliefs and ideas of that faith just TUE disappear, continue in a half life, or migrate into new TUE forms? Matthew Arnold, in his poem 'Dover Beach', wrote of TUE 'the melancholy long, withdrawing roar' of the loss of God TUE in this country, and now journalist Madeleine Bunting takes TUE it as a starting point. TUE TUE Today: Sin. No other idea, it could be argued, has so TUE pre-occupied Christian thinkers and believers than the TUE sinful state of human nature. And they have tended to focus TUE on sin and sexuality rather than on sin and structures: 'The TUE preoccupation with sin was a deeply manipulative and highly TUE effective form of social control. Sin was made personal and TUE individual. Much less attention was given to structural sin, TUE the belief that there is a collective responsibility for TUE social and economic systems which exploit or oppress TUE people'. TUE TUE So that's gone. But today, in the wake of the decline of TUE Christianity, we seem as persuaded as ever about our fallen TUE state: 'not thin, rich, or beautiful enough, caught in a TUE spiral of self-judgment'. And with no recourse to a TUE meaningful redemption or salvation.
