SAT SAT Sir Colin Davis, who died this week aged 85, has been an SAT intrinsic part of British musical life since he first picked SAT up a baton as a “raw young man” in the 1940s. He was praised SAT for his performances of Mozart, Stravinsky and Sibelius, he SAT fiercely championed Berlioz and the music of his close SAT friend Michael Tippett, and was renowned for his tireless SAT work ethic. From the BBC archives we hear Sir Colin talk SAT about the many orchestras he conducted, his impressions of SAT the LSO when they first met, and how he won over the Royal SAT Opera House. He talks about setting out to change his life SAT aged 35 and why he rejected the notion of the maestro. SAT SAT Suzy Klein also talks to Head of Music at the Royal Opera SAT House, David Syrus, principal clarinettist of the London SAT Symphony Orchestra Andrew Marriner, and tenor Ian Bostridge SAT about their experiences of working with Sir Colin. SAT SAT Acclaimed Iranian-American Mahan Esfahani was the first SAT harpsichordist to be named a BBC New Generation Artist and SAT in 2011 gave the first solo harpsichord recital in the SAT 116-year history of the BBC Proms. He’s currently preparing SAT for a London recital in which he’ll play Ligeti, Bach and SAT Byrd on two different harpsichords including a 1970s SAT instrument made by the firm of Robert Goble & Son which was SAT designed specifically for modern music. SAT SAT At the Goble factory in Oxford Mahan talks to Suzy Klein SAT about how the harpsichord has developed in recent decades SAT along with people’s perception of it, and considers what may SAT lie ahead for the future of the instrument. For many poets it is the very human SUN preoccupation of the passing of time, leading to death which SUN serves as inspiration; we’ll hear poems by Shakespeare, DH SUN Lawrence, TS Eliot and John Milton on the subject. Then SUN there are the writers who play with the very concept of SUN time. Lewis Carroll’s Mad Hatter has bargained with Time for SUN it to be always teatime, while in Kurt Vonnegut’s SUN Tralfamadore, moments in the past and future are as SUN permanent as in the present, echoing Einstein’s theory that SUN “people like us, who believe in physics, know that the SUN distinction between past, present and future is only a SUN stubbornly persistent illusion”. Martin Amis takes the idea SUN to the extreme by writing the narrative of his novel Time’s SUN Arrow backwards! There is also the hugely popular literary SUN theme of time travel, from Scrooge’s nocturnal visit to his SUN past, to HG Wells’s Time Machine disappearing into the SUN future. SUN SUN Several of my chosen extracts had an obvious musical SUN parallel: Dava Sobel’s book Longitude about the English SUN clockmaker John Harrison inspired Birtwistle to write his SUN piano piece Harrison’s Clocks, and Bo Holten’s A Time for SUN Everything was inspired by a Bible passage from SUN Ecclesiastes. As Oscar Wilde’s Dorian Gray suddenly ages and SUN dies when his portrait is stabbed by a knife, Janacek’s SUN Emilia Marty (The Makropulos Case) suffers a similar fate SUN when she stops taking the elixir which has kept her young SUN for 337 years. SUN SUN Many composers in classical, jazz and pop worlds have SUN experimented with unusual or constantly changing time SUN signatures, and some have gone further by writing music in SUN which the music retraces its steps and goes backwards once SUN it reaches the midpoint. An early example of this is by the SUN 14th century composer Guillaume de Machaut in the motet My SUN End is My Beginning. A similar idea is used by the American SUN experimental composer Conlon Nancarrow in his studies for SUN player piano; in his Study no.21, we hear a canon in which SUN the two lines slow down and speed up from opposite SUN directions, crossing over in the middle like a musical SUN letter X. The programme also includes music by Haydn, SUN Messiaen, Ligeti and Pink Floyd. SUN SUN Producer: Ellie Mant SUN SUN 19:45 Sunday Feature b01rygqy (Listen) SUN Staying Bright - A Century Of Stainless Steel SUN SUN Has this been the Stainless Steel Age? SUN SUN The poet Simon Armitage travels in this programme to the SUN heart of Stainless. SUN SUN What is it? What was the first stainless steel product? SUN Where would we be without it now: from the spring in an SUN aerosol can to a canister containing high level nuclear SUN waste? A skate, a kitchen sink, a surgeon's scalpel, SUN aircraft landing gear. It's phenomenally useful, versatile, SUN robust, rust resistant. SUN SUN But ... would you make a wedding ring out of it? Would you SUN still clad a bank in its cold, blingy armour? SUN SUN Simon visits Sheffield: Outokumpu where Stainless is made SUN and Portland Works, where the first ever stainless steel SUN knife blade was forged; Canary Wharf, in London, for its SUN architecture; and the sculptor, Antony Gormley, who is SUN working on a new stainless steel bodyform. A master symphonist, he's widely MON regarded as one of the most important composers of his MON generation. But at the end of the nineteenth century, MON Nielsen's adventurous and free spirited outlook was regarded MON with some suspicion. In some quarters his music was deemed MON to be cool and academic, until his Third Symphony marked a MON turning point in his career, garnering praise from Nielsen's MON advocates and opponents alike. MON MON Today Donald Macleod explores the reasons behind some of MON these differing opinions. MON MON Carl Nielsen MON Maskarade - opera in 3 acts FS.39 MON Neeme JARVI MON Gothenburg S O. MON MON 14:00 Afternoon on 3 b01ryt6p (Listen) MON BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Episode 1 MON MON A week of programmes with the BBC National of Orchestra of MON Wales, featuring works by Schumann and music inspired by MON springtime. MON MON Presented by Katie Derham. MON MON The BBC NOW's Principal Conductor Thomas Søndergård made his MON first tour of mid and north Wales with the orchestra last MON month, featuring programmes infused with the breath of MON spring air. MON MON They began their journey together at the Aberystwyth Arts MON Centre, and music by Thomas's fellow Dane C.F.E. Hornemann. MON Hornemann was one of the great driving forces of music in MON Denmark in the nineteenth century, and in the 1860s he MON visited the evocative ruins of the royal castle at Gurre, MON near Elsinore. So when the Danish playwright Holger MON Drachmann wrote a tragedy based on the ballad of Valdemar MON and Tove, set in the castle, Hornemann was the natural MON choice to write the incidental music. His atmospheric MON overture has become his best known work, with its "hunting MON horn" motifs - though today the legend of Gurre castle is MON perhaps better known through a work by a different composer, MON Schoenberg's Gurrelieder. MON MON Thomas also brings two spring pictures from Northern climes, MON where the release from dark winter is more keenly felt than MON in our British Isles. Sibelius's Spring Song is tinged with MON melancholy, whereas Glazunov's symphonic poem is altogether MON more cheery and colourful. MON MON Robert Plane is Principal Clarinet with the BBC National MON Orchestra of Wales, but today he steps forward to the front MON of the stage for Mozart's glorious Clarinet Concerto. Robert MON plays the work on the instrument for which it was originally MON written, the basset clarinet, with an altogether richer and MON warmer sound than the standard instrument. MON MON Stravinsky's Rite of Spring closes the week on Friday, but MON today Thomas Søndergård conducts his Symphony in C, written MON over a quarter of a century later. This is the composer in MON his neoclassical vein, harking back to the Vienna of the MON late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The Symphony MON in C may be lacking the massive orchestral force of the MON earlier ballets, but it's no less inventive. "My symphony is MON going to be Classical in spirit," Stravinsky wrote, "more MON concise in its form than Beethoven". MON MON Plus more Russian music: Prokofiev's fiery First Piano MON Concerto with Radio 3 New Generation Artist Christian Ihle MON Hadland. MON MON Finally today we've more music from North Wales, a concert MON from Llandudno with the BBC NOW's previous Principal MON Conductor Thierry Fischer. WED WED 14:00 Afternoon on 3 b01rytgm (Listen) WED BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Episode 3 WED WED A week of programmes with the BBC National of Orchestra of WED Wales, featuring music inspired by springtime. WED WED Presented by Katie Derham. WED WED Following Britten in our lunchtime concert, his teacher WED Frank Bridge begins and ends today's programme in seasonal WED colours. Spring comes forcefully into focus with the BBC WED National Orchestra of Wales and Associate Guest conductor WED Francois-Xavier Roth in the rhapsody Enter Spring. It's a WED blaze of orchestral energy and invention, inspired by the WED wild and windy Sussex Downs. By contrast, the tone poem WED Summer is more restful and balmy, all the more poignant WED since it was written in 1916 during the First World War when WED some of Bridge's closest friends were killed in action. The WED conductor is Richard Hickox, a particular champion of WED Bridge, with whom the orchestra recorded six volumes of WED orchestral works. WED WED French music spans these two Bridge pillars. Thierry Fischer WED conducts Massenet's third orchestral suite, his Scenes WED Dramatiques, The three movements are all based on WED Shakespeare's plays: The Tempest, Othello and finally WED Macbeth, which takes us from the thunder and lightning of WED the opening through to Macbeth's death and defeat. There's WED more Macbeth, this time by Verdi in tomorrow's programme - WED from the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. WED WED Spring appears once again as depicted by Debussy in this WED rare opportunity to hear his cantata Le Printemps, the WED fruits of one of his three attempts in the 1880s to win the WED Prix de Rome at the Paris Conservatoire. Richard Hickox WED conducts the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the women's WED voices of the BBC National Chorus of Wales. At the Paris WED Conservatoire, Debussy studied organ with Cesar Franck, and WED next we have one of Franck's most popular works, his WED Symphonic Variations, written just after Debussy's cantata, WED but a world away in spirit. Here the themes all have a rich WED sonority and an expressive warmth. The soloist is Radio 3 WED New Generation Artist Christian Ihle Hadland, here at his WED very best, in this impressive studio session, the first to WED be conducted by the BBC NOW's Principal Conductor Thomas WED Søndergård. FRI FRI 14:00 Afternoon on 3 b01rytgr (Listen) FRI BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Episode 4 FRI FRI A week of programmes with the BBC National of Orchestra of FRI Wales, featuring works by Schumann and music inspired by FRI springtime. FRI FRI Presented by Katie Derham. FRI FRI Our week celebrating Spring concludes with a breathtaking FRI performance of Stravinsky's ground-breaking ballet, The Rite FRI of Spring. This year marks the centenary of the first FRI performance in May 1913 in Paris - when a riotous reception FRI marked the moment that music changed for ever. The only FRI rioting from this performance with conductor Thierry Fischer FRI is the applause by the St. David's Hall audience in Cardiff. FRI FRI Before that, we catch up with the BBC NOW and Principal FRI Conductor Thomas Søndergård on their recent springtime tour FRI of North Wales. Sibelius is always a favourite with Thomas, FRI and he opens this concert from Bangor with his first set of FRI Scenes historiques - three vibrant musical pictures from FRI Finnish history, of vital nationalist importance at a time FRI of increasing oppression by Russia. As in Monday's FRI programme, Principal Clarinet Robert Plane takes the solo FRI spot, this time with the concerto by Radio 3's composer of FRI the week, Carl Nielsen, for whom the clarinet was capable of FRI being "simultaneously warm-hearted and completely FRI hysterical, as mild as balm, and screaming like a tramcar on FRI poorly greased rails". Rest assured that orchestra and FRI soloist live up to the composer's promise. Similarly, FRI Beethoven's ever popular Fifth Symphony doesn't disappoint, FRI in this electric performance to a capacity audience at the FRI Pritchard Jones Hall at the University of Bangor University. FRI Such was the popularity of this concert that last-minute FRI would-be concert-goers were turned away as the hall was FRI completely full. FRI FRI To complete the week, we turn for the final time to our FRI featured composer Robert Schumann and another iconic FRI crowd-pleaser, his Piano Concerto. The soloist in this FRI concert from the Brangwyn Hall in Swansea was John Lill, FRI here at the very peak of his expressive power, shaping the FRI phrases with superlative authority. A recording very FRI definitely not to be missed.
