The Metaphysical SoulSUN
SUN
In his influential essay The Metaphysical Poets, T. S.SUN
Eliot brought about a revaluation and reassessment ofSUN
interest in a group of 17th Century poets who had beenSUN
neglected for a considerable time.SUN
SUN
He examined one by one the characteristics which areSUN
generally considered ‘metaphysical’: the elaboration ofSUN
simile to the farthest possible extent, rapid associationSUN
of thought, compression and sudden contrasts of images.SUN
SUN
In his view their unique contribution was to unite thoughtSUN
with feeling – something he called “Unification ofSUN
Sensibility” – a faculty which was lost in the age ofSUN
Milton and Dryden (who could think but not feel) and theSUN
succeeding age of Tennyson and Browning (who could feelSUN
but not think).SUN
SUN
Eliot also saw close connections between the complexity ofSUN
his own poetry and that of the Metaphysicals.SUN
SUN
This programme interlaces the five sections of BurntSUN
Norton (the 1st of Eliot’s Four Quartets) with music andSUN
the metaphysical poetry of John Donne and Andrew MarvellSUN
etc.SUN
SUN
Anna Massey reads the Eliot and Derek Jacobi reads theSUN
Metaphysicals. They meet in the middle where both takeSUN
part in Andrew Marvell’s A Dialogue between the Soul andSUN
the Body.SUN
SUN
In 1931 TS Eliot wrote to Stephen Spender: I haveSUN
Beethoven’s A minor Quartet on the gramophone, and I findSUN
it quite inexhaustible to study. There is a sort ofSUN
heavenly, or at least more than human gaiety, about someSUN
of his later things which one imagines might come toSUN
oneself as the fruit of reconciliation and relief afterSUN
immense suffering; I should like to get something of thatSUN
into verse before I die.SUN
SUN
Eliot’s Four Quartets are to some extent inspired by thisSUN
quartet – the only Beethoven Quartet in 5 sections, as areSUN
all four of the Eliot Quartets. Eliot said he wanted toSUN
get beyond poetry, as Beethoven in his later works,SUN
strove to get beyond music.SUN
SUN
The language and thought in the Four Quartets is soSUN
elliptical and compressed that it would be inappropriateSUN
and presumptuous to match the poetry and the music tooSUN
literally. The aim has been to allow the poetry to breathSUN
by placing moments of musical reflection between the 5SUN
sections of the poem. In some cases the music matches theSUN
mood in others it provides a contrast. Below I haveSUN
suggested some tangential (possibly subconscious)SUN
connections between the words and the music. However theseSUN
are entirely personal and hopefully the programme standsSUN
on its own without a knowledge of these connections.SUN
SUN
Burnt NortonSUN
SUN
Section 1:SUN
“Time present and time past / Are both perhaps present inSUN
time future”SUN
The opening section introduces the theme of time. The poemSUN
considers the relationship between life in time, a life ofSUN
bondage and suffering, and life in eternity, freedom, andSUN
happiness. This leads into the “Et vitam venturi” fromSUN
Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis. In this part of the Mass,SUN
Christians look forward to the life to come when they willSUN
live outside of Time. Beethoven constructs his fugueSUN
subject out of a chain of descending thirds which returnSUN
to the original note – a concise emblem for eternalSUN
recurrence in eternity.SUN
SUN
Section 2: “Garlic and sapphires in the mud”SUN
Eliot develops the theme of time and memory – “To beSUN
conscious is not to be in time”. One of the central imagesSUN
of the poem is the memory of a rose-garden with a pool.SUN
Takemitsu’s Quotation of Dream plays with memories ofSUN
Debussy’s La Mer and transforms the material into aSUN
Japanese flower-garden with a lakeSUN
SUN
Section 3 “Here is a place of disaffection”SUN
Eliot contrasts the redeemed time of eternity with theSUN
bondage of temporal time where “time-ridden faces” areSUN
“distracted from distraction by distraction.” In laterSUN
years he admitted that the section beginning “DescendSUN
lower, descend only / Into the world of perpetualSUN
solitude” was inspired by the London Underground, “a placeSUN
of disaffection” where “the world moves / In appetency, onSUN
its metalled ways / Of time past and time future.” JohnSUN
Adams’ Short Ride in a Fast Machine suggests theSUN
mechanistic world of fast travel and machines – though heSUN
possibly found it more exhilarating that Eliot.SUN
SUN
Section 4 “Time and the bell have buried the day”SUN
Much of the inspiration behind the Four Quartets came fromSUN
Eastern philosophy with its emphasis in eternal recurrenceSUN
and withdrawal from the temporal world of will andSUN
illusion. In this section the poet withdraws into theSUN
world of night where “the light is still / At the stillSUN
point of the turning world.” The 4th movement of Mahler’sSUN
3rd Symphony is a setting of a passage from Nietzsche’sSUN
Also sprach Zarathustra in which the Eastern prophetSUN
Zarathustra meditates on Night and EternitySUN
SUN
Section 5 “Words move, music moves / Only in time”SUN
Eliot explores the connection between music and time. TheSUN
idea that music exists both inside and outside of time. InSUN
other words we experience music through time but it alsoSUN
exists as an abstract concept outside of time – “the endSUN
precedes the beginning, / And the end and the beginningSUN
were always there / before the beginning and after theSUN
end.” We end with the poem’s inspiration, the last sectionSUN
of the central movement from Beethoven’s late A minorSUN
quartet in which for pages time itself seems masterfullySUN
suspended.SUN

SUN
Bobby Hutcherson is one of the few jazz musicians who isSUN
comfortable in both free and straight ahead jazz. Born onSUN
the West Coast of America in the early 1940s, HutchersonSUN
was soon exposed to jazz through family connections. AfterSUN
formal education, he played with local jazz musicians LesSUN
McCann, Charles Lloyd, Paul Bley, Scott LaFaro and CurtisSUN
Amy. During the 1990s and to the present day, HutchersonSUN
has made fewer recordings, although he has kept up aSUN
steady touring schedule. Recently, he has been a member ofSUN
the San Francisco Jazz Collective with fellow icons BrianSUN
Blade, Joshua Redman and Nicholas Peyton.SUN

The Handel Opera Cycle reaches Handel's penultimateTHU

most likely because it is a short work, and probably theTHU
shortest opera he ever wrote. The story centres onTHU
Tirinto, who loves Rosmene, and the hero Imeneo who hasTHU

Free Thinking 2009, Free Thinking - The Future of MenTHU
THU
Richard Moss of the BBC's Politics Show hosts debate atTHU
Radio 3's Free Thinking ideas festival asking whether theTHU
21st century is a hostile environment for men. What sortTHU
of future lies ahead for the male gender? On the panel inTHU
front of an audience at the Sage, Gateshead are writer andTHU
journalist Beatrix Campbell, assistant bishop of NewcastleTHU
Paul Richardson, Roger Olley of Fathers Plus and JuliaTHU
Neuberger as they argue over the place of men in today'sTHU
and tomorrow's world.THU
THU
The jobs that defined men are disappearing, the oppositeTHU
sex trounces them in exams and there is speculation thatTHU
men will not even need be needed for reproduction in theTHU
future. With primary school teaching being anTHU
overwhelmingly female vocation and the rise in the numberTHU
of single parent families, many boys are growing upTHU
without significant male role models. And the currentTHU
debate over paternity leave and paternity rights suggestsTHU
that society is confused about what it means to be aTHU
modern father. Some scientists even speculate that one dayTHU
we may not need men for reproduction.THU
THU
So have men failed to move with the times - or does modernTHU
society undermine them at its peril?THU
