SUN SUN In the early 1700s Georg Philipp Telemann, one of the SUN foremost and most talented composers of his day, was SUN appointed Kapellmeister to Reichsgraf Erdmann II at his SUN castle in Western Poland. In 1706 the Great Western War SUN caused the entire court to flee and as a consequence SUN Telemann found himself in Krakow and Pless where he SUN encountered the local Moravian folk music alongside some of SUN the distinctive music of the gypsies. This music made a huge SUN impact on Telemann and inspired him to incorporate elements SUN of it into his own compositions. SUN SUN In this concert, recorded at the 2011 Lufthansa Festival, SUN Ensemble Caprice under their director, the recorder player SUN Matthias Maute and with the singer Belinda Sykes, recreate SUN the sounds of the Polish gypsy music alongside some of SUN Telemann's compositions from the period. SUN SUN François-Xavier Roth, the charismatic Associate Guest SUN Conductor, leads the BBC National Orchestra of Wales in two SUN works from each end of Strauss's career, and Britten's SUN powerful Sinfonia da Requiem. SUN SUN Strauss wrote his Oboe Concerto in 1945, inspired by his SUN conversations with an American soldier John de Lancie, whom SUN he'd met in Germany at the end of the Second World War. De SUN Lancie's day job was principal oboe of the Pittsburgh SUN Symphony Orchestra, and he persuaded the ageing composer to SUN write a work exploiting the natural melodic potential of his SUN instrument. Scored for chamber-like forces, the concerto is SUN full of wistful autumnal colours and poses a lyrical grace SUN that recalls Mozart and Schubert. Tonight's soloist, SUN François Leleux, is no stranger to the work, having recently SUN recorded it. SUN SUN Five years earlier, the young Benjamin Britten was SUN commissioned by the Japanese government to write a symphony SUN to mark the 2600th anniversary of the Mikado dynasty. The SUN result, his Sinfonia da Requiem was rejected for its SUN perceived Christian overtones (a criticism that arose simply SUN from Britten's quoting of the Dies irae, a plainsong melody SUN from the mass for the dead). It's a work that abounds in SUN energy and clashing tensions, and demonstrates an SUN extraordinarily confident handling of symphonic structure. SUN At the time of its premiere in 1941, Britten considered it SUN his best work to date SUN SUN To end, one of Strauss's most brilliantly characterised SUN tone-poems. He casts a solo cello as Don Quixote, aided and SUN abetted by his servant Sancho Panza in the form of a solo SUN viola. Tonight those roles are taken by Tim Hugh and SUN Lawrence Power. From the 16th century Spanish SUN Conquistadors to Queen Victoria’s reign as Empress of India SUN – the elusive and absorbing drive to empire build has SUN inspired poets, musicians and authors for centuries. The SUN programme opens with Benjamin Britten’s fanfare to perhaps SUN the most glamorous empire builder of all time: Queen SUN Elizabeth I. The war-like Virgin Queen was not shy in her SUN Imperial ambitions: we hear her rabble-rousing speech to the SUN troops at Tilbury, on the eve of The Spanish Armada. SUN SUN Edward Elgar and Rudyard Kipling are both figures with SUN strong Imperial associations. Much of their work is now SUN synonymous with long out-moded ideas of national SUN entitlement. Elgar’s Imperial Masque, The Crown of India and SUN Kipling’s White Man’s Burden are uncomfortable reminders of SUN a Victorian world order which has since crumbled – but not SUN without leaving a painful mark across the globe. SUN SUN The most invidious aspect of man’s urge to empire build is SUN the deprivations suffered by the oppressed nation; the lives SUN crushed in the militaristic advance of the conquering SUN culture. Derek Walcott’s Two Poems on the Passing of an SUN Empire and the negro spiritual Nobody Knows, recall the SUN heart breaking history of slavery which underpins that of SUN any nation which has pursued the spread of empire. And yet SUN the programme closes with James Weldon Johnson’s SUN soul-stirring Lift Every Voice and Sing alongside Sam SUN Cooke’s cry for freedom A Change Is Gonna Come – both happy SUN reminders that hope has come to replace the darkness of the SUN past. Charles Nicholl, Leonardo's biographer, is SUN fascinated by these transient masterpieces, which are SUN equally important to the development of Leonardo's work and SUN which the artist carefully describes in his own writing. SUN There are also vivid eye witness accounts. In this programme SUN he re-imagines the most brilliant, Il Paradiso, in its SUN original setting at the Castello Sforzesco in Milan. SUN SUN These ephemeral, insubstantial creations maybe dwarfed by SUN the perennial celebrity of his paintings, but they contain SUN in miniature that mix of art and science, of visual flair SUN and mechanical ingenuity, which is typical of him. Comments SUN in his notebooks sometimes suggest they were a distraction SUN from more serious work, but distraction is a key mental SUN process in Leonardo, a finding of unexpected new avenues to SUN explore, and these trivial-seeming divertimenti have their SUN own fascination; they are a counterpart to the profoundly SUN dramatic quality of works such as the Last Supper. SUN SUN Set in 1873, the play focuses on Stevenson as a young man SUN invigorated by the intellectual maelstrom that was still SUN challenging the way people saw and navigated the world of SUN arts, science and politics following the Enlightment. He may SUN have been unsure of what his role in all this could be, but SUN it was the things he knew he had to reject - belief in God, SUN a career in law or engineering - that were creating turmoil SUN in his own mind and heartache in his relationship with his SUN parents. And meanwhile his discovery of the female species SUN was also pre-occupying his thoughts and emotions. SUN SUN Robert Forrest writes, SUN "Famously Stevenson created no convincing or complex women SUN in his fiction until late in his life, with (to a degree) SUN Catriona and (wonderfully) the two Kirsties in Weir of SUN Hermiston. But the Stevenson who is revealed in his letters SUN and essays is altogether different; his understanding of SUN women, his liking, respect and admiration for them, are very SUN striking. In this 350th year since the composer's MON birth, Donald Macleod surveys his life and music. Although MON from humble beginnings, Scarlatti rose to claim the MON patronage of princes, queens and cardinals. Knighted by the MON Pope, he also joined the elite Arcadian Academy with MON prominence over other composers such as Corelli. Largely MON overshadowed in recent years by his son Domenico, Alessandro MON once held prominence on an international stage. Not only did MON he claim to have composed 114 operas, but it is believed he MON composed over 700 cantatas, nearly 40 oratorios, along with MON many instrumental works. Donald Macleod appraises the legacy MON of Alessandro Scarlatti, and questions whether we should MON re-evaluate his importance. MON MON Donald Macleod surveys the life and music of Alessandro MON Scarlatti, with a look at the composer's early years. Little MON is known about Scarlatti's life in Palermo, but his family MON moved to Rome when he was about 12. Married at the age of MON 18, Alessandro started to make a name for himself early on. MON Initially employed by the church to conduct choirs, we'll MON hear an example of his choral writing, his Nisi Dominus. MON MON Alessandro soon realised that it was the world of opera MON which he wished to pursue. This attracted powerful patrons, MON including a number of cardinals. He soon became the maestro MON di cappella to Queen Christina of Sweden, and we'll hear an MON aria from his early opera L'honesta negli amori, which he MON dedicated to her. TUE TUE As opera became less popular in Rome due to Papal decree, TUE Alessandro Scarlatti soon moved to Naples to pursue his TUE career for the stage. Donald Macleod surveys this period in TUE Naples, where Scarlatti composed around 70 operas. We'll TUE hear Le violette from Pirro e Demetrio, which had an TUE international success. TUE TUE Although Scarlatti greatly influenced the course of opera in TUE Naples, he still relied upon other work to survive, TUE including his appointment as the Maestro of the Royal TUE Chapel. He composed over sixty cantatas during this period, TUE frequently for the entertainment of Cardinals Ottoboni and TUE Pamphili in Rome. And as crowds of protestors fill St TUE Petersburg's Palace Square, great and terrible events are TUE about to unfold. With its angry trumpets, revolutionary TUE chants and jangling bells, Shostakovich's 11th isn't just TUE one of the mightiest of modern symphonies. It's practically TUE a film score without the pictures, a sweeping panorama of TUE political struggle and human tragedy that leaves the ears TUE ringing and the heart pounding. TUE TUE For the BBC Phil's Russian Conductor Emeritus Vassily TUE Sinaisky, this music is in the blood: expect him to charge TUE every note with a deeply personal significance. First, TUE though, Sinaisky brings his trademark verve to two very TUE different Russian showstoppers - Rimsky-Korsakov's TUE melodramatic overture, and Rachmaninoff's hugely popular, TUE unforgettably romantic Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. TUE TUE Weber's Concertino is a great virtuoso showcase for the TUE horn, making huge demands on the player, at one point even TUE requiring the soloist to play two notes at once by humming TUE while playing! His 2nd symphony follows a very classical TUE path. TUE TUE Schubert's Symphony 5, written when the composer was just TUE 19, is a real product and expression of his youth, while TUE still containing some incredibly affecting and moving music. THU THU Feeling confined by Papal decree in Rome, Alessandro THU Scarlatti continued to seek commissions elsewhere. Donald THU Macleod follows Scarlatti's journey to Venice for the THU Carnival season in 1707. Scarlatti - in trying to impress THU the opera capital of the time - seems to have THU over-complicated his compositions, and the Venetian audience THU was not impressed. THU THU Scarlatti eventually returned to Naples having been offered THU a post by the newly appointed Austrian Viceroy. He didn't THU sever links with Rome, for he was made a Knight of the THU Golden Spur by the Pope in 1716. It was during this latter THU part of his life that Scarlatti focused more on instrumental THU writing. We'll hear a set of 39 variations for harpsichord, THU on the theme La Folia, similar in form to Bach's Goldberg THU Variations. Scarlatti didn't stop writing for the Church, THU and the programme ends with the latter part of his Stabat THU Mater. This hymn to the virgin was very popular - until THU Pergolesi's version came along. THU THU 22:45 The Essay b016kf7j (Listen) THU A Dark History of British Gardening, Dominance THU THU Kill! Kill! isn't a cry you normally hear in the garden ... THU so begins historian and biographer Jenny Uglow's essay on THU another dark side of the gardeners' nature - the desire to THU dominate. THU THU This weakness has led gardeners to turn their potting sheds THU into places stuffed with toxic mixes and poisons for the THU killing of weeds and bugs AND for the force feeding of the THU plants we DO want to keep. THU THU So it has been through history - from the Romans to the THU present day. Gardeners, says Jenny, are too fond of keeping THU their heads down in their own plots to recognise the wider THU implications of their actions. FRI FRI Donald Macleod surveys Alessandro Scarlatti's final years FRI and his reputation as the founder of Neapolitan Opera. FRI During this time a new movement was beginning in the world FRI of opera: opera buffa. We'll hear Scarlatti's own attempt at FRI the new style, with an aria from Il Trionfo dell'Onore. FRI FRI Towards the end of his life, Scarlatti also taught more FRI pupils out of financial necessity. During one of these FRI lessons he stated that he'd never liked wind instruments, FRI because they never stay in tune. Despite that, Alessandro FRI did compose a number of works for wind instruments, and FRI we'll hear his Concerto in F major for 3 Flutes. FRI FRI Scarlatti's greatest love may have been opera, but he was FRI mainly employed as the maestro di cappella to a number of FRI royal courts and churches and made a significant impact upon FRI the world of oratorio, cantatas, and sacred music. FRI FRI Perhaps none of our national characteristics are played out FRI more obviously in the garden than xenophobia - our mixed and FRI troubled responses to all things foreign. But excessive FRI romantic nationalism associated with the land can take FRI people in the wrong direction, underpinning intolerance and FRI even fascism. FRI FRI And gardeners' attitudes to 'invasive' foreign plants can be FRI curiously representative of their views of society more FRI generally!
