With contributions from SAT Gerard McBurney, Simon Morrison and pianist and conductor, SAT Vladimir Ashkenazy, Peggy Reynolds enters the mystical world SAT and the languid rich harmonies of Alexander Scriabin. SAT SAT At the turn of the twentieth century this remarkable SAT figure's music and ideals challenged the very nature of SAT individual and musical expression. His compositional SAT technique and style evolved extraordinarily during of his SAT life - his early piano pieces, reflect his adoration of SAT Chopin, they are romantic and fresh while his later SAT compositions explore new reaches and innovations in harmony. SAT His ten piano sonatas are staples of the piano repertoire, SAT and his miniature piano pieces are considered masterpieces SAT of 20th century pianism. SAT Scriabin loved to discuss philosophy and became enthralled SAT by the theosophy movement of Madam Blavatsky. He was SAT convinced that he was destined to produce an all-consuming SAT work of art - an apocalyptic work of cosmic proportions SAT which would transfigure mankind and its universe. The SAT unrealised Mysterium (Final Mystery) which would embrace SAT music, sound; colour and light; dance; fires, incense, SAT perfumes; tastes, pain and other tactile experiences. SAT Scriabin's works from 1902 until his death in1914 were all SAT influenced by his this vision. SAT His orchestra works include the Divine Poem (1903), the Poem SAT of Ecstasy (1907), and the Poem of Fire or Prometheus (1909) SAT a multi-sensory work for which Scriabin orchestrated a part SAT for colour keyboard which was to project a constantly SAT evolving stream of colours as the visuals to the sonic SAT portion of the score. SUN SUN 21:30 Sunday Feature b0132n2r (Listen) SUN A Symphony for Detroit SUN SUN In this Sunday Feature, Petroc Trelawny visits the American SUN city of Detroit to look at how the ravages of economic SUN decline have affected the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. SUN SUN In the good old days, cars flew off the production lines and SUN the motor industry made generous donations to the orchestra SUN in an act of civic pride. The orchestra responded, under the SUN batons of conductors like Paul Paray and Antal Dorati, by SUN becoming one of the pre-eminent American institutions, SUN renowned the world over for its motor-like mechanical SUN precision and musicality, as well as providing the string SUN sound to many Motown hits. SUN SUN However, the recession hit Detroit years before it took a SUN strangle-hold on the rest of the world and the Detroit of SUN today is marked by crime, unemployment, depopulation and, SUN crucially, the dramatic decline of commerce and industry. SUN This has had a knock-on effect on the arts. SUN SUN At the start of 2011, the city's grand Orchestra Hall lay SUN empty; the only noise coming from Detroit Symphony Orchestra SUN players, picketing on the street outside. Their six month SUN strike ranked as one of the most bitter in American musical SUN history, with players accusing management of effectively SUN trying to erase decades of proud artistic endeavour; SUN managers pleading that the current orchestral model just SUN doesn't pay. SUN SUN Now the strike is over and players and management are SUN reflecting on what happened and how they should face the SUN future, both as an orchestra and as a city. SUN SUN 22:15 Words and Music b00p69gr (Listen) SUN Make the Mark SUN SUN In this edition of Words & Music I explore the nature and SUN power of music itself, in all its many guises. Music in SUN society and our own individual lives has inspired writers SUN throughout the centuries. Here are some highlights from the SUN programme… SUN SUN Robert Herrick’s poem ‘A Canticle to Apollo’ starts the SUN sequence with music as God’s gift to humanity, leading on to SUN Messiaen’s ethereal Des canyons aux étoiles. Going back to SUN the third century, the Roman grammarian Censorinus questions SUN the nature of music which he feels can be understood through SUN embryology, astronomy and mathematics. His assertion that SUN music can go so far as to rouse the legions in war is SUN reflected in Janacek’s bright and bold Sinfonietta. SUN SUN Another early philosophical concept I have included is SUN Musica Universalis or the Music of the Spheres (frequently SUN accredited to Pythagoras) which associated music with the SUN sun, moon and planets. The 18th century writer, J F H Von SUN Dalberg euphorically describes his vision of cosmic music SUN and a meeting with the spirit of harmony against a back drop SUN of Pergolesi’s Salve Regina in a recording by the SUN counter-tenor, Andreas Scholl. SUN SUN Moving from the lofty and spiritual to the everyday and the SUN role of music in modern life, I’ve selected an extract from SUN Nick Hornby’s High Fidelity. Record obsessed Rob turns up SUN the volume to escape his disastrous love life, seeking SUN solace with Neil Young and contemplating the music to SUN feature at his own funeral which optimistically includes SUN ‘You’re the Best Thing that Ever Happened to Me’ by the SUN empress of soul Gladys Knight. SUN SUN Whilst in adult life many of us turn to music in times of SUN love and loss, we often start our musical journey in SUN childhood with obligatory and unrequested piano lessons ... SUN the patient and imaginative teacher in Alastair Reid’s ‘A SUN Lesson in Music’ makes a valiant effort as she encourages SUN her pupil to ‘play the tune again’ with the backdrop of SUN twinkle, twinkle little star, really Mozart’s Variations on SUN ‘Ah vous dirai-je maman’. SUN SUN Whilst music can often soothe and comfort it can also SUN torment, as in Clara Schumann’s heart rending account of her SUN husband Robert’s descent into insanity as he struggles to SUN compose and express himself in his music. Anne Sexton’s SUN ‘Music Swims Back to Me’ describes an institutionalised SUN young woman as she tries to make sense of her surroundings. SUN As music swims round her muddled mind, the sinister sounds SUN of Ligeti’s Mysteries of the Macabre add to the darkness. SUN SUN But, I also wanted to reflect how music can draw people SUN together. Jack Kerouac’s lucid description of the Beat SUN Generation and Charles Mingus exuberant ‘Better Git It In SUN Your Soul’ are a vibrant reminder of music’s power to SUN ‘excite souls’ (in the words of Censorinus) and to define SUN eras. SUN SUN And to conclude there’s the theme of music as a form of SUN reminiscence. Music can powerfully provoke memories and take SUN us back to times past, either real or imagined. The great Russian writer Leo Tolstoy said of him: MON "among the new composers he is the best: he is simple and MON melodious". Anton Arensky was born 150 years ago, yet MON despite the rather caustic remarks by his teacher MON Rimsky-Korsakov prophesying that Arensky would soon be MON forgotten, Arensky is in fact a significant composer within MON the Russian musical landscape. Donald Macleod in MON conversation with Gerard McBurney, an expert on Russian MON music, journeys through the murky picture that is Arensky's MON life and music. He was a pupil of Rimsky-Korsakov, and then MON went on to be a protégé of Tchaikovsky. This swapping of MON allegiances between the nationalist composers in favour of MON the westernizers, led to much conflict during Arensky's MON career. His orchestral works have faded into obscurity, yet MON it is his chamber music such as the first piano trio, or his MON works for two pianos, that have remained firmly within the MON repertoire. His most significant impact would come as the MON teacher of both Rachmaninov and Scriabin, although he would MON often argue with many of his pupils, and his lifestyle of MON heavy drinking and gambling would bring his life to an early MON end aged only 44. MON MON In the first episode surveying the life and music of Anton MON Arensky, Donald Macleod and Russian music expert Gerard MON McBurney, focus upon the composer's early years. Arensky was MON born in Nizhy-Novgorod. His musical talents were soon MON recognised, and his family moved to St Petersburg. He went MON on to study at the St Petersburg Conservatoire, with MON Rimsky-Korsakov as one of his teachers. His tutor was so MON pleased with Arensky's talents, that he allowed his pupil to MON aid him in the preparation of one of his own operas. Arensky MON would go on to be awarded the Gold Medal at his graduation. MON MON During his study at the Conservatoire, Arensky composed a MON number of works including his Piano Concerto, which MON demonstrates and interest in the music of Chopin and Liszt. MON The piano would remain a firm favourite for Arensky in his MON later compositions. Another work Arensky started to compose MON during his student days was his first Symphony. This work MON was a favourite of Tchaikovksy, who lobbied on Arensky's MON behalf for more performances. From his childhood onwards music was there MON for him. His mother was a pupil of Holst while his father MON wrote children's books and ballad lyrics. But his frailty MON meant that the young Richard was sent to boarding school, so MON he hardly knew him. Bennett's musical mind was inquisitive MON from the start and after reading about her he approached the MON composer Elisabeth Lutyens for lessons. She invigorated him MON further. Soon after he went to the Royal Academy of Music MON but this didn't give him the stimulus he needed although it MON was there that he met one of his best friends Cornelius MON Cardew. Together they wanted to find out about the new music MON which was being written in the 1940s and 50s. MON For a while he was the only pupil of Pierre Boulez, and with MON Cardew he visited Darmstadt in Germany where the new music MON supremos of the era met and had their works performed. His MON prowess as a pianist meant he was called upon to play some MON of the more challenging music by Boulez, Stockhausen and MON others. But in parallel with this he was writing film scores MON and continuing to play jazz with friends. So already at the MON age of twenty his musical life was eclectic to say the MON least. In the late 50s and 60s his compositional career MON burgeoned with commissions and performances all over the MON world. His film scores included Far from the Madding Crowd, MON Nicholas and Alexandra and Murder on the Orient Express all MON of which earned him Oscar nominations. MON It would influence the rest of James's life, giving him MON fresh (and if you were one of his nobles you might say MON 'worrying') ideas of what a monarch should be and how a MON country should be run. The return of the King to Scotland MON would not only bring bloody vengeance upon the family of his MON late uncle, the Duke of Albany, but a new and energetic MON style of kingship. Celebrating 150 years TUE since the composer's birth, Donald Macleod in conversation TUE with Gerard McBurney, journey through this murky picture TUE that is Arensky's life and music. TUE TUE Arensky graduated with the Gold Medal from the St Petersburg TUE Conservatoire, and at this young age, he was soon to find TUE himself offered a teaching post at the Moscow Conservatoire. TUE This move marked a significant shift in Arensky's musical TUE interests, from the nationalist school of composers like TUE Rimsky-Korsakov, to people like Tchaikovsky. As a teacher in TUE Moscow, his students included Rachmaninov, Scriabin, Gliere TUE and Medtner. Arensky's second Suite for two pianos, in TUE particular the movement Le Savant, is a tongue-in-cheek TUE pastiche of academic writing which is likely to be the TUE composer sending himself up. TUE TUE It was in Moscow that Tchaikovsky would start to have a TUE greater influence upon Arensky's career. Arensky composed an TUE orchestral work Marguerite Gautier, which he dedicated to TUE his mentor, but Tchaikovsky thought the choice of subject TUE was unworthy: the adventures of a prostitute. Arensky didn't TUE fully turn his back on Rimsky-Korsakov, and his Variations TUE on a Russian theme is based on a folk song compiled by his TUE former teacher. TUE TUE Early on in Arensky's time in Moscow, he forms a romantic TUE attachment and proposes to the girl. However, Arensky ever TUE the butterfly tries to escape from this marriage, until TUE composers such as Tchaikovsky and Taneyev step in and force TUE Arensky to do the right thing. During the programme there is TUE an excerpt of Taneyev playing one of Arensky's piano works, TUE in a recording made in 1892. TUE TUE Formed from pupils of Venezuela's El Sistema programme, an TUE initiative that offers every child a free musical education, TUE the players have been performing together since childhood, TUE and have lit up concert halls around the world with their TUE technical skill, passion and deep musicality - as their TUE concert master violinist Alejandro Carreno says: "for us TUE this isn't a job, not even a concert, for us music is all of TUE life". Under the baton of fellow El Sistema alumnus, Gustavo TUE Dudamel they team up with the young singers of the National TUE Youth Choir of Great Britain and distinguished soloists to TUE perform a colossus of the repertoire. Written for vast TUE forces, Mahler's Second Symphony takes a journey from the TUE graveside, asks the question 'is there life after death?' TUE and ends with a triumphant promise of eternal life. It's a TUE work Alejandro Carreno and all the orchestra love, "Mahler's TUE music is so descriptive, the atmosphere it creates is like TUE that of an opera. We hugely enjoy playing his music." Saint-Saëns' ever-popular Organ Symphony TUE dominates the programme, joined by a new double concerto, TUE half man, half beast, from Simon Holt. Plus Proms featured TUE composer Frank Bridge's orchestral picture of the wild and TUE windy Sussex Downs, overlooking the Channel. TUE TUE French organ virtuoso Marcel Dupré was a regular visitor to TUE the Royal Albert Hall throughout his life. He became a great TUE friend of Sir Henry Wood and played the Organ Symphony at TUE the Proms in 1935. Cortège et litanie is a dazzling TUE crescendo, using the mighty Royal Albert Hall organ together TUE with full symphony orchestra. TUE TUE The inspirational Parisian conductor Francois-Xavier Roth TUE made a great impact at the Proms last year at the helm of TUE the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, with whom he's TUE Associate Guest Conductor. This programme tells TUE the story of his life and work. TUE TUE Harriett Gilbert explores the poet who performed his work to TUE crowds of 25,000 and who wrote speeches for Yasser Arafat. TUE At six, after an Israeli attack on Darwish's village in TUE Upper Galilee, his family became refugees in Lebanon, and TUE from then on he lived throughout the Middle East, until his TUE return to Ramallah in 1995. TUE TUE 22:45 The Essay b00v11sr (Listen) TUE The Stewarts, James II of Scotland TUE TUE Glasgow novelist and crime-writer Louise Welsh gets to grips TUE with the murders which marred the life and reign of James II TUE King of Scots (1430-1460). After his father was murdered TUE down a sewer by a pack of vengeful knights, young King James TUE was wrenched from his mother's custody and found himself in TUE the hands of guardians who thought nothing of murdering TUE young teenage dinner guests when it suited them politically. TUE According to blood-curdling tradition, poor James was forced TUE to watch as the sixteen year old earl of Douglas and his TUE younger brother were despatched at the block. In a modern TUE novel, you'd be screaming for child protection services to TUE step in, but when you're a medieval child King of Scots, TUE you're all alone. TUE TUE Fiction swirls about James's reign and his later epic feud TUE with the House of Douglas. Even by the 16th century, TUE chroniclers were making up embellishments which amounted to TUE historical fiction. In the 19th century Walter Scott would TUE show a 'Pulp Fiction' like talent for black-humoured TUE dialogue when he ventured into the little butcher's shop of TUE horror stories (some mythical and some all-too-true) from TUE James's reign. Louise looks at the tales and motifs of TUE James's reign from the point of view of a modern crime TUE fiction writer. She traces his development as a character TUE and finally anatomises the most shocking act of James's TUE reign - where he turned into a murderer himself, leading a TUE pack attack with blades and battle axes on a new earl of TUE Douglas. This little after-dinner surprise (called like the TUE first one a 'Black Dinner'), has gripped Scottish historical TUE writers for 560 years and counting... Celebrating 150 years WED since the composer's birth, Donald Macleod in conversation WED with Gerard McBurney, journey through this murky picture WED that is Arensky's life and music. WED WED A Dream on the Volga, an opera by Arensky, moved the older WED composer Tchaikovsky to tears. After its premiere, WED Tchaikovsky was keen to promote this work to others, in the WED hope of more performances. Arensky was also active within WED choral circles as well, including being appointed to the WED Synodal School of Church Music in Moscow. As the conductor WED of the Russian Choral Society, it fell to Arensky to compose WED for the 10th anniversary of the coronation of Tsar Alexander WED III. Arensky's response was a Cantata, borrowing themes from WED Boris Godunov. WED WED Arensky was by now addicted to gambling and drink, which WED often affected his teaching at the Moscow Conservatoire. WED This didn't help matters when one of his students was to be WED the rather difficult Scriabin. Pupil and teacher did not hit WED it off, and made it hell for one another during classes. WED Teaching, and royal commissions aside, Arensky still found WED time to compose chamber music. One work he composed during WED this period would go on to be one of his most famous works, WED the first Piano Trio. WED In the programme we consider the mature talent that Zaha has WED become as we attend the opening of MAXXI, the Museum of 21st WED Century Art in Rome, the first unequivocally modern public WED building in the city for many years. We report from WED Wolfsburg in Germany where Zaha's new Phaeno science centre WED astonished architectural critics, and from Glasgow where the WED new Transport Museum is a vital part of a regenerative WED programme for the Clyde, and we take a trip to the acclaimed WED new Evelyn Grace Academy in South London. WED We find out something of what inspired Zaha to become an WED architect from a small but significant exhibition which Zaha WED has staged in Zurich. It celebrates the debt she owes to a WED group of revolutionary Russian artists who wanted to WED re-invent painting and architecture in the early years of WED the 20th century. WED WED Zaha has given us an in depth interview for the programme. WED Other contributors include Deyan Sudjic, Director of the WED Design museum who gives us an insight into how the Hadid WED office works, Jim Heverin, one of Zaha inside team of WED trusted colleagues and Simon Jenkins who is deeply sceptical WED about the 'fantasy buildings' made by architects such as WED Zaha and the price tag they carry. THU Inspired by the fact that Bach and Beethoven arranged their THU own violin concertos for the keyboard, Dejan Lazić has done THU the same for the Brahms with engagingly idiomatic results. THU Julian Lloyd Webber is an ardent champion of Holst's THU Invocation. The concert ends with the masterpiece that put THU Elgar's name on the world's musical map, with his THU affectionate sketches of 'friends pictured within' - a firm THU favourite that retains its own aura of mystery. To the benefit of THU Antiques Road Show viewers, but perhaps to the loss of the THU music audience, he chose archaeology. THU THU Ever since, he's been struck by how often people comment, 'I THU wish I'd played the cello', with a yearning rarely displayed THU in connection with other instruments. Is it because its THU range and tone is closer to the human voice than any other THU instrument, or is it the heartstring-tugging repertoire THU that's grown up around it? THU THU Lars seeks the answer in the company of Julian Lloyd Webber THU who, immediately after the interval, will be playing a newly THU re-discovered piece for the cello, Invocation, by Gustav THU Holst, followed by Elgar's universally-acclaimed Enigma THU Variations. And Graham Fitkin, whose newly composed Cello THU Concerto for Yo-Yo Ma will be premiered in Prom 61 on 31 THU August, discusses the merits of the cello and the problems THU it poses for the composer. Commissioned by Nehru and THU designed as a modernist city in the 1950s how does it fare THU today? THU THU After Indian independence and partition, the Punjab lost its THU capital, Lahore, to Pakistan. The remnant Indian state THU needed new law courts and a parliament. Nehru saw a chance THU to show how India could modernise and westernise and turn THU its back on the village and tradition. Various Western THU architects were commissioned and, eventually, a team led by THU the giant of modernism, Le Corbusier, got the job. A THU sparsely populated site, about 150 miles north of Delhi, was THU identified and Le Corbusier and his team got down to work. THU Le Corbusier, famously, declared his wish to demolish Paris THU and rebuild the French capital as he thought it should be. THU At Chandigarh he was offered the only chance in his career THU to plan and build a city from scratch. A grid system of THU numbered sectors was devised, acres of low rise housing was THU built and, at the head of the city, several monumental THU concrete buildings - new law courts, a double state THU parliament and administration offices - rose up in front of THU a backdrop of the beginings of the Himalayas. This was a THU vast project calling upon huge resources and manual THU labouring effort. Le Corbusier attended to the epic vision THU but also to the detail even designing furniture for the THU parliament and the new man-hole covers. THU THU Sukhdev Sandhu, whose parents left the Punjab for THU Gloucester, visited the new city as a boy. He returns to see THU how this "vision of the future" has coped 60 years on. THU Sprawling and chaotic suburbs are rising up all round THU Chandigarh. The green spaces and idealised geometry of Le THU Corbusier's city have never looked more threatened. THU Producer: Tim Dee. Lance couched, surging with adrenalin, he THU charged full speed at the other knight. At the mid-point of THU the lists they met, lances stabbing into each others coat THU armour. Three times the wild knight defeated his opponent. THU The Edinburgh crowd roared their approval of the winner. THU They went even wilder when he removed his costume to reveal THU himself as their king - James IV, the most glorious of the THU Stewart monarchs. THU THU James spared no expense with his tournaments to bring THU glamour to the world of knightly virtues. There were exotic THU ladies as prizes, poetry, banqueting, elaborate costumes and THU Arthurian round tables. Camelot would have nothing on THU Holyrood as far as James was concerned, and it was all a bit THU of dig at his English neighbours, the Tudors. They'd THU polished up their shaky new royal credentials by claiming THU descent from Arthur. James liked to remind them that having THU married their daughter, Margaret Tudor, his children were in THU line to their throne too. Dr Katie Stevenson shows how royal THU chivalry embraced a lot more than just knocking the other THU chap off his horse and avoiding the pointy end of his lance, THU at the sumptuous Renaissance court of James IV. Celebrating 150 years FRI since the composer's birth, Donald Macleod in conversation FRI with Gerard McBurney, journey through this murky picture FRI that is Arensky's life and music. FRI FRI Arensky was now back in St Petersburg, as the Director of FRI the Imperial Chapel Choir. One work he composed during this FRI period, was his cantata The Fountain of Bakhchisaray. FRI Zerema's aria from this work would go on to be a popular FRI work for Arensky. However, during his tenure as Director, FRI Arensky spent much time on vacation to southern resorts, FRI usually for his health. He would soon resign from this FRI position, and was awarded a very healthy pension. FRI FRI Having now returned from Moscow, Arensky was certainly in ho FRI hurry to reacquaint himself with his former teacher FRI Rimsky-Korsakov. One friendship he did maintain for many FRI years, was with the virtuoso pianist Siloti. Arensky would FRI often feature himself on tour as a pianist with Siloti, and FRI this also led to a number of compositions by Arensky for two FRI pianos, including his fourth Suite. FRI FRI At the age of 44, Arensky died of tuberculosis. The music of FRI Rubenstein, Liszt and Chopin had fed straight into the music FRI of Arensky, and he was the bridge between these older FRI composers, and his own students especially Rachmaninov and FRI Scriabin.
