ThroughoutSATmost of the 19th and 20th centuries, the history ofSATItalian opera was directly tied to the fortunes of thisSATsingle family publishing house, based in Milan.SATSATThe company was founded in 1808 by Giovanni Ricordi, aSATviolinist who led the orchestra in a small MilaneseSATtheatre. From very small beginnings, the business grewSATrapidly and in 1814 he won the exclusive right to publishSATall the music performed at La Scala, where he was aSATprompter. Ten years later he purchased the venue's entireSATarchive, and by 1835 Ricordi boasted a catalogue of 10,000SATpublications. These included most of the operas ofSATRossini, Bellini and Donizetti.SATSATBut the company's special relationship with Verdi andSATPuccini was especially significant. Giovanni's grandsonSATGiulio persuaded Verdi to come out of retirement in 1880SATand later played a vital role in Puccini's artisticSATcareer, publishing all his works. Casa Ricordi was alsoSATthe first to come up with the 'royalty' concept andSATsuccessfully lobbied for one of the first laws to protectSATcomposers' (and publishers') copyright. But was the firmSATalways rigorous in its production standards?SATSATThe music includes many important operas from the 19thSATcentury, including Rossini, Bellini, Verdi and Puccini.SATContributors include Simonetta Puccini, Ricordi familySATmembers, Ricordi managing director Tino Cenamo, formerSATRicordi director of publishing Gabrielle Dotto, musicSAThistorian Philip Gossett and Verdi expert In Germany,SUNin Russia, in Italy, in Spain the whole of civilisation,SUNof society was changing' wrote Virginia Woolf,SUNdescribing the 1930s.SUNSUNThis week's Words and Music takes a journey through theSUNdecade which ended with the outbreak of World War Two. TheSUNprogramme begins with Louis MacNeice's beautiful lyricSUNpoem 'Snow'. 'World is crazier and more of it thanSUNwe think, incorrigibly plural' he said, in a poem whichSUNexplored the feelings of isolation, menace, scepticism andSUNuncertainty in the 1930s.SUNSUNWar is a constant presence during the decade. Earlier, theSUNSpanish Civil War - which began in July 1936 -SUNinspired many composers and writers. Many intellectuals ofSUNthe Left rallied to the Republican cause including GeorgeSUNOrwell who wrote his account of his experience as aSUNmilitiaman in 'Homage to Catalonia'.SUNSUNStephen Spender too spent time in Spain where he wasSUNhaunted by what he saw in the field. In 1939 he wrote aSUNpoem about the death of a soldier,'A Stopwatch and anSUNOrdnance Map', which he presented to the composer SamuelSUNBarber who wrote a choral setting for the poem. The eventsSUNof the war cast a dark shadow too on Benjamin Britten'sSUNViolin Concerto in D Minor which was written for theSUNSpanish violinist Antonio Brosa.SUNSUNThe work of the male poets of the 1930s - W.H. Auden,SUNLouis MacNeice, Stephen Spender, T.S. Eliot - is stillSUNwell known and widely read but, in the programme, you'llSUNalso hear the less well known female poets of the decade,SUNSylvia Townsend Warner and E.J. Scovell. Scovell's poemSUN'Flowers' can be heard alongside Delius' 'ViolinSUNSonata No 3' which the composer completed in 1930.SUNSUNThe American experience of the 1930s is represented by aSUNreading from John Steinbeck's epic 1939 novel '˜TheSUNGrapes of Wrath' set in the American Depression andSUNfollowing the journey of the Joad family as they travelSUNfrom the Mid-West to California in a desperate search ofSUNwork.SUNSUNThe programme ends with W.H. Auden's 'September 1,SUN1939', written in the first days of the Second WorldSUNWar, a poem which he later disowned and refused to haveSUNreprinted. When he finally allowed the poem to appear inSUNthe Penguin 'Poets of the Thirties' it was on theSUNcondition that the editor made it clear that AudenSUNregarded it as 'trash' which he 'was ashamed to haveSUNwritten'. Between the writing of the poem and today fewSUNhave agreed with the poet's view.SUNSUNProducer: Fiona McLeanSUNSUNRunning OrderSUNSUNTimings are from the start of the programmeSUNSUN00:00:00SUNBENJAMIN BRITTEN Les Illuminations InterludeSUNFrank Lloyd - horn City of London SinfoniaSUNRichard Hickox - conductor VIRGIN CLASSICS 3499232SUNSUN00:00:42SUNLOUIS MACNEICE Snow Nicholas Farrell (reader)SUNSUN00:01:29SUNNOEL COWARD Twentieth Century BluesSUNThe Noel Coward Album Peter Matz - pianoSUNSONY CD47253SUNSUN00:05:02SUNE.J.SCOVELLSUNFlowers Sian Thomas (reader)SUNSUN00:05:42SUNDELIUS Violin Sonata No 3 Tamsin Little - violinSUNPiers Lane - piano CONIFER 75605513152SUNSUN00:09:47SUNT.S.
