SAT SAT Throughout the programme, Christopher Young examines how a SAT composer makes an audience jump in terror. He discovers how SAT his own devilish compositions are inspired by the works of SAT Wagner, Berlioz and Liszt. Surprising connections are drawn SAT between classic horror scenes and demonically inspired SAT operas and symphonies. SAT SAT The programme starts with an investigation of the SAT relationship between the devil and the violin, embodied in SAT the life and legend of Niccolo Paganini. With musicologist SAT Maiko Kawabata and violinist Philippe Quint, Christopher SAT considers the devil's role in musical complexity. SAT SAT The tritone is a musical interval nicknamed Diabolus in SAT Musica. It was generally avoided by medieval composers due SAT to the chaos it created within harmony. Goldsmith's Lecturer SAT in Music Anthony Pryer dissects the unsettling nature of the SAT Devil in Music. Along the way, Christopher discovers what SAT many musicologists consider to be the first horror scene: SAT The Wolf's Glen scene from Der Freischutz, an 1822 opera by SAT Carl Maria Von Weber. With University of Leeds Professor of SAT Critical Musicology Derek Scott, Christopher examines SAT Mozart's Don Giovanni and Franz Liszt's Faust Symphony. Horror music expert Stan Link examines SAT Hector Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique, while identifying SAT the sensorial similarities between horror films and classic SAT Romantic works. SUN SUN This season, the Halle Orchestra are engaged in a cycle of SUN the complete symphonies of Beethoven - one of the greatest SUN symphonic achievements in the classical repertory - under SUN the baton of their Principal Conductor, Sir Mark Elder. As SUN part of this cycle, Sir Mark has juxtaposed a Beethoven SUN symphony with a major symphonic piece from the 20th century. For SUN this the orchestra are joined by the members of the Halle SUN Choir. Adams himself has described his work as exploring his SUN occupation with creating a symphonic from "that grows". The SUN urban night is heard in Steve Reich’s ‘Electric SUN Counterpoint’, Frank Sinatra’s ‘In the wee small hours of SUN the morning’ and Robert Frost’s ‘Acquainted with the Night’ SUN in which the poet walks silently through the empty streets SUN of the city. Outside the city the Scottish poet John SUN Burnside’s poem ‘The Light Trap’ conjures up the moths SUN attracted by the light of a torch whilst Charles Tomlinson SUN describes the ‘tiny stars on darkness’ of fireflies in roses SUN at night. The sensuous and emotional power of the night is SUN heard in Symanowski’s beautiful ‘Symphony no 3 – Song of the SUN Night’, inspired by a poem by Rumi, the great Persian mystic SUN poet and exponent of Sufism. The loneliness of the lover in SUN the darkness is a theme many poets have explored – heard SUN here in Pablo Neruda’s brooding poem on lost love, ‘Tonight SUN I can write’, alongside the sultry heat of Falla’s ‘Nights SUN in the Gardens of Spain’. At first, London must have seemed the perfect TUE base for his activities, but when war was declared in August TUE 1914, he and his mother Rose decided to up sticks and head TUE out of harm's way - to the Big Apple - on the not TUE unreasonable grounds that a war casualty could not become TUE Australia's first significant composer. Around the same time, THU he came up with the mildly eccentric idea of founding, in THU effect, a museum of Himself - the Grainger Museum - in his THU home town of Melbourne, Australia. It's a little as if Elvis THU had opened Graceland as a visitor attraction while he was THU still alive! The Grainger Museum may sound like a THU monstrously self-regarding enterprise, but in fact, with its THU display of first editions of his music, it came to represent THU to Grainger "a measure of his artistic defeat" rather than a THU celebration of his achievements; as he noted in an THU introduction to the proposed display, most of his music was THU no longer being played - and, as he put it, "music that THU isn't heard isn't alive." Another example of Grainger's THU unusual slant on reality was his concept of 'blue-eyed THU English' - an attempt to turn back the linguistic clock and THU expunge all traces of post-Norman-Conquest verbiage from the THU English language. Accordingly, concerts were 'tone-shows', THU quartets became 'foursomes' and vegetarians mutated into THU 'meat-shunners'. Grainger even went so far as to collaborate THU on a blue-eyed English dictionary, whose Newspeakish goal THU was to eliminate all alien admixtures from the language. THU Grainger carried on presenting his own 'tone-shows' - as an THU internationally celebrated concert pianist. But here too he THU acquired a reputation for eccentric behaviour - not many THU performers fulfil their touring commitments by jogging from THU one engagement to the next, with their concert clothes in a THU rucksack on their back; but Grainger did, even becoming THU known as 'the jogging pianist'. FRI It's the culmination of his boyhood love of Rudyard Kipling, FRI instilled in him in his teens by his father, who wanted to FRI "tickle up the British lion in him" during his years at the FRI Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt. Shortly before Grainger FRI completed his Kipling cycle, he had performed the Grieg FRI Piano Concerto at the Hollywood Bowl under the baton of FRI Leopold Stokowksi. The two men enjoyed working together, and FRI a couple of years later, Stokowksi, a master-arranger FRI himself, wrote to Grainger asking if he would make fresh FRI arrangements for a new recording of his 'greatest hits' - FRI Molly on the Shore, Irish Tune from County Derry, Early One FRI Morning, Handel in the Strand, Mock Morris and Country FRI Gardens. Grainger was evidently very pleased with the FRI resultant recordings, but remained deeply ambivalent about FRI his own achievements as a composer: "I am not very fond of FRI my own music. If there is anything I hate it is listening to FRI my own silly music and having to sit there like a fool while FRI I see how much others also dislike it.".
