Theodorakis - Greece's Musical RevolutionarySAT
SAT
85 this year, Mikis Theodorakis is best known for theSAT
music to 1974 film Zorba the Greek, but as Miranda HinkleySAT
discovers, there's also a wealth of chamber, opera andSAT
symphonic music. Part of the resistance during the SecondSAT
World War, imprisoned during the Greek Civil War, exiledSAT
during the military dictatorship, his story mirrors thatSAT
of modern Greece. And he's been responsible for a musicalSAT
revolution, a uniquely Greek sound. Mikis Theodorakis isSAT
joined by singers Maria Farantouri and Marios FrangoulisSAT
and by violinist Georgos Demertzis, to look back on aSAT
60-year career.SAT

The composer presented the writer with a copy of theseSAT
songs, writing that Andersen may very well find theSAT
settings strange. Schumann said that he himself found theSAT
texts strange at first, but as he began to understand theSAT
poems and their strangeness more deeply, his music becameSAT
increasingly strange as well.SAT

Live from the Met, Verdi's StiffelioSAT
SAT
Verdi's opera Stiffelio had a troubled history. TheSAT
predominantly Catholic Italy of the mid-19th century wasSAT
not ready for a story of adultery in the home of aSAT
Protestant minister and the opera was severely censored atSAT
the time of its première in 1850. Forced to extensivelySAT
revise his opera, Verdi then lost interest in it and didSAT
his best to destroy all copies of the original manuscript.SAT
It wasn't until 1960 that a complete score of StiffelioSAT
was discovered, and in 1993 it entered the repertory ofSAT
the Metropolitan Opera with tenor Plácido Domingo in theSAT
title role. Domingo now takes up the conductor's batonSAT
whilst Argentinian tenor José Cura sings the role ofSAT
Stiffelio, the troubled clergyman who struggles betweenSAT
his ideals and the urge for revenge. American sopranoSAT
Sondra Radvanovsky performs the role of his wife, Lina.SAT
From the opening scene, the young Verdi's originality isSAT
apparent as he begins Stiffelio with a long, ambitiousSAT
septet and goes on from there with that mixture ofSAT
dramatic force and melodic richness that made him the mostSAT
successful composer of Italian opera in the second half ofSAT
the 19th century.SAT

The Chekhov Challenge - The Sound of a Breaking StringSAT
SAT
One of the most enigmatic stage directions in all dramaSAT
appears in Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard:SAT
SAT
'A distant sound is heard. It appears to come from the skySAT
and is the sound of a breaking string. It dies away sadly.'SAT
SAT
Between the Ears focuses on the many attempts to produceSAT
this sound, ranging from musical saws to gun-shots. GuestsSAT
include Paul Arditti, who mixed industrial, musical andSAT
bird sounds for the production by Sam Mendes, and musicianSAT
Leafcutter John, who accepts Radio 3's own ChekhovSAT
Challenge, recording his experiments to find a resonantSAT
breaking string sound for the 21st century.SAT

SAT
Robert Worby introduces new music for violin and forSAT
string quartet, in conversation with virtuoso violinistSAT
Irvine Arditti of the Arditti Quartet.SAT
The string quartet is often said to be one of the mostSAT
challenging mediums to write for, and anyone attempting itSAT
today is standing on the shoulders of giants, going backSAT
to Beethoven, Mozart and Haydn.SAT
But James Dillon and Jonathan Harvey can certainly claimSAT
authority in this medium, each of them having writtenSAT
several substantial string quartets, and their latestSAT
quartets are featured in this programme, with Dillon's newSAT
quartet recorded here in its very first performance, fromSAT
the 2009 Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival.SAT
Harvey's fourth quartet, recorded at the same event,SAT
extends the medium with a virtuosic electronic part,SAT
transforming the string sounds and projecting them to allSAT
corners of the concert hall. As the composer describes it,SAT
All sorts of psychic metamorphoses are undergone by theSAT
string sound; it seems to enter into spaces like theSAT
centre of the earth...SAT
The programme also includes Harvey's Scena for violin andSAT
orchestra, in which the solo violin takes on a dramaticSAT
role like an operatic singer; and Hilda Paredes' violinSAT
solo in memory of another violinist, Thomas Kakuska.SAT

Songs of TrebizondSUN
SUN
The Black Sea Region of Turkey was once the ancientSUN
kingdom of The Pontus and its Christian orthodoxSUN
inhabitants subsequently thrived through the Byzantine andSUN
Ottoman times. But for centuries this culture, centred onSUN
the great trading port of Trebizond on the caravan routeSUN
to Persia, was living on borrowed time. The 1923 exchangeSUN
of populations between modern Greece and Turkey, resultingSUN
from the Lausanne Treaty, was the end game that gave riseSUN
to the Pontic nationality splitting into multipleSUN
citizenships. The shepherds in the high mountains behindSUN
the city of Trebizond, who for more than a thousand yearsSUN
had driven their flocks up onto the high plateau in summerSUN
and back to the narrow coastal plain in winter, sometimesSUN
adopting a Christian persona, sometimes a Muslim one,SUN
disappeared and the economy has never really recovered.SUN
Worse than this for some, the architectural jewel that wasSUN
Trabzon (as it is now called) has become an almostSUN
Soviet-like conglomeration of tower blocks. The finalSUN
insult came five years ago with the much opposedSUN
construction of a coastal motorway, which has chopped thisSUN
once great maritime city off from the Black Sea. TheSUN
isolation that kept ancient cultures protected has finallySUN
gone - along with the cultures. Tom de Waal traces some ofSUN
what has been lost to the Soumela Monastery where everySUN
August 15th people of Pontic descent from across the globeSUN
come to remember the feast of the Virgin. Here there is aSUN
collision of Russian, Turkish and Greek interests, whichSUN
provides a lesson in modern regional politics. ButSUN
connecting all of these disparate people is music - theSUN
Greek Lyre and the Turkish Kemence, a small violin playedSUN
like a 'cello. They play the same, they dance the same.SUN
Culturally connected and politically divided this is aSUN
story of people who are really cousins, or even brothers,SUN
but cannot quite bring themselves to admit it.SUN

FaceSUN
SUN
How does one analyse a face? Is it the expression whichSUN
makes the impression, or the combination of its individualSUN
features?SUN
SUN
We begin by searching amongst the faces in a crowd as theySUN
walk past us – each unique – as observed by Walt Whitman.SUN
The focus shifts onto the eyes, the windows of the soul.SUN
From David Newton’s laid back arrangement of the jazzSUN
classic Angel Eyes , through Poulenc’s surreal La DameSUN
Aveugle (the blind woman) to a knowing glance from theSUN
winking, blinking maid, it’s all rather tiring so whatSUN
better way to sink into a slumber than with a children’sSUN
poem Wynken, Blynken and Nod which I still read to my ownSUN
little ones at bedtime.SUN
SUN
George Barlow’s ecstatic eulogy on the face of a loved oneSUN
is tinged with sadness, for there is a large age gapSUN
between them. Not such a problem for young Narcissus, asSUN
he unwisely falls for his own reflection, a story echoedSUN
by the wicked queen in Little Snow White as she gazes intoSUN
her mirror. The music here is Tcherepnin’s Narcisse etSUN
Echo, rarely heard and yet so effective.SUN
SUN
Age will always win in the end, of course, eating away atSUN
youth’s bloom. Oscar Wilde’s Dorian Gray thinks he has theSUN
answer – give away your soul and hide a portrait in theSUN
attic. Simple! But we all know it won’t end there…SUN
SUN
What about those who are born without beauty? The faciallySUN
challenged hero is Edmond Rostand’s Cyrano, unforgettablySUN
portrayed on screen by Depardieu in a film which usedSUN
Anthony Burgess’s virtuosic translation as subtitles, andSUN
demands an equally virtuosic performance here by MichaelSUN
Maloney.SUN
SUN
The sad fact is that for those who are not blessed withSUN
beauty or are cursed with some facial flaw, finding aSUN
partner is very hard work. Eliza Cook’s Song of the uglySUN
maiden is one of the saddest poems I know, particularlySUN
poignant when you remember that in the 19th century whenSUN
it was written, marrying was essential for any woman whoSUN
wanted any kind of independence or financial security.SUN
SUN
Like any fairy tale, we all need a happy ending, so asSUN
little Gerda kisses away Kay’s tears in Hans ChristianSUN
Andersen’s The Snow Queen we can see clearly that love isSUN
the ultimate salvation. A kiss from the lips communicatesSUN
so much, from that first sensation of electricity –SUN
wonderfully described in Purcell’s erotic Sweeter thanSUN
roses, to tenderness from an old friend. Beauty is onlySUN
skin deep, and as Ella sings so seductively, when weSUN
eventually find our soul mate, we come to love that faceSUN
which we see every morning over the breakfast table, noSUN
matter what it looks like.SUN

William Walton (1902-1983), Episode 1MON
MON
William Walton is perhaps best defined by a series ofMON
paradoxes: the pillar of the British Musical EstablishmentMON
who lived in voluntary exile; the king of the grand,MON
filmic gesture who harboured deep insecurity; theMON
socialite and ladies' man who often preferred to be alone.MON
Walton hid himself behind an acerbic wit- a statementMON
which has also been made about his writing. Donald MacleodMON
follows him through the distinct eras of his life andMON
explores the many sides to the man and his music.MON
MON
Snatched by the Sitwells from what they saw as anMON
ignominious future as a schoolteacher in Oldham, WilliamMON
Walton became known in London as the most precociousMON
British composer of the 1920's. Donald Macleod delves intoMON
the curious world with which Walton became involved.MON

Don McCullinTUE
TUE
As the war photographer Don McCullin has a majorTUE
retropspective of his work at the Imperial War MuseumTUE
North, Rana Mitter looks at the state of photography todayTUE
as both art form and tool of reportage .TUE
TUE
For more than 50 years, Don McCullin's images have shapedTUE
our awareness of modern conflct and its consequences. ATUE
unique collaboration between McCullin and the Imperial WarTUE
Museum has resulted in a major new exhibition containingTUE
over 200 photographs, contact sheets, objects, magazinesTUE
and personal memorabilia, which show how war has shapedTUE
the life of this exceptional British photographer andTUE
those across the globe over the last half-century.TUE
TUE
Rana and guests discuss whether the emergence of theTUE
amateur mobile phone and internet as a vehicle for up toTUE
the minute imagery of events such as the HaitianTUE
earthquake and the political conflicts in Iran denudedTUE
traditional photography like McCullin's of its power. OrTUE
should we think of them as adding exciting possibilitiesTUE
to the medium? The programme also looks at how theTUE
restrictions on the taking of photography by terrorTUE
legislation has impacted on the ability of photographersTUE
to represent the world around them.TUE
TUE
Rana also discusses the status of photography as an artTUE
form asking whether it has lost ground and standing withTUE
our major institutions and the public at large.TUE

February the 3rd and 9th. Recorded at London's RoyalWED
Festival Hall the pianist, conductor and humanitarianWED
plays all five of Beethoven's Piano Concertos and alsoWED
conducts some of Schoenberg's seminal orchestral works.WED
WED
Both Beethoven and Schoenberg are composers whoWED
simultaneously summarised the musical traditions that wentWED
before them whilst pointing to radical new developmentsWED
and Barenboim see parallels between them in forging newWED
paths that were to have lasting, irrevocable consequencesWED
for the future of composition.WED
WED
In the first concert of the series, Barenboim pairs worksWED
written a century apart when both composers were in theirWED
mid 20s. Beethoven's vivacious C major Piano Concerto wasWED
one of the works which the young enfant terrible wowed theWED
aristocracy of Vienna in the 1790s, while Schoenberg'sWED
audacious Pelleas and Melisande is a piece scored forWED
massive orchestra which teeters on the edge of tonality.WED
WED

Daniel Barenboim, piano and conductorWED
WED
Barenboim has been Principal Conductor of the BerlinWED
Staatskapelle since 1992 and was made their PrincipalWED
Conductor for Life in 2000. The orchestra of the BerlinWED
State Opera, the Berlin Staatskapelle traces its rootsWED
back to the 16th century.WED
WED
Tonight's concert is followed by a focus on BarenboimWED
performing chamber music in recordings made especially forWED
the BBC. Carrying on with the artistic parallels suggestedWED
in this evening's concert, we feature Daniel BarenboimWED
playing Beethoven's Sonata No. 7 in D major, Op. 10, No.WED
3, as well as Schoenberg's Three Pieces, Op. 11.WED

FeminismWED
WED
Anne McElvoy is joined by guests including Natasha WalterWED
to discuss whether feminism is in crisis or engaged withWED
the trappings of success.WED
WED
Opinions on the current state of feminism range from aWED
sense of crisis and failure to triumph and evenWED
transcendence. Anne McElvoy is joined by thinkers andWED
writers on the subject to unpick the arguments and draw aWED
bead on what Feminism means now.WED
WED
Natasha Walter's new book, Living Dolls, argues that womenWED
are being sold an airbrushed, highly sexualised andWED
increasingly narrow vision of 'femininity'. AlthoughWED
opportunities for women in the real world may haveWED
expanded, the ambitions of many young girls are beingWED
limited by a culture that asks them to see their onlyWED
proper occupations as consumerism and self-decoration.WED
Using reportage, interviews and analysis the author offersWED
a view on where equality has left women.WED
WED
Anne McElvoy also looks at The Love Children, theWED
posthumous follow up to iconic 1977 book, The Woman's RoomWED
by American feminist writer Marilyn French.WED

Beethoven: Piano Concertos Nos 2 and 4THU
THU
In the second broadcast this week given by DanielTHU
Barenboim and the Berlin Staatskapelle, two of Beethoven'sTHU
Piano Concertos sandwich one of the works in whichTHU
Schoenberg's music finally breaks free from theTHU
constraint's of tonality. In the 1790s, audiences wereTHU
perplexed and shocked by Beethoven's strange use of keyTHU
relations in the Second Concerto and how he began toTHU
explore music's potential for temporal expansion in theTHU
Fourth Concerto. In the early years of the 20th centuryTHU
for Schoenberg the situation was the exact reverse as heTHU
attempted to rein in the luxurious expansiveness of hisTHU
early masterpieces with a new concision and compression,THU
as exemplified by the 5 Orchestral Pieces.THU

THU
Philip Dodd talks to novelist, Martin Amis, in a fullTHU
programme length interview about his latest novel, TheTHU
Pregnant Widow, his pungent political opinions and a backTHU
catalogue that includes some of the most talked-aboutTHU
English novels of recent decades.THU
THU
In the galaxy of British literary fiction Martin Amis isTHU
still a name to conjure with. His era defining 80s novelsTHU
as London Fields and Money front a collected works thatTHU
includes 12 novels, 2 autobiographies, serious journalism,THU
essays and two volumes of short stories on subjectsTHU
ranging from video games to paedophilia. After 9/11 AmisTHU
became more famous for his pungent opinions on IslamismTHU
and the supposed backwardness of Arab societies than hisTHU
novels earning the ire of Terry Eagleton and YasminTHU
Alibhai-Brown among others.THU
THU
He has returned to fiction with a new work, The PregnantTHU
Widow. Set in a country house in Italy, the novel tacklesTHU
the sexual fallout of the feminist revolution. ATHU
revolution that Amis supports but sees as a work inTHU
progress. No stranger to giving offence, Amis, by his ownTHU
admission, has said it will get him in trouble with theTHU
feminists but others talk of a return to the comic formTHU
that made him famous.THU
THU
Considered to possess a very English sensibility, Amis hasTHU
spent a lot of time elsewhere, particularly New York andTHU
he spent the last two years living in Uruguay with hisTHU
wife but he also has a position as Professor of CreativeTHU
Writing at the University of Manchester.THU
THU
In an extended conversation, Philip Dodd asks Martin AmisTHU
about the full gamut of his opinions from dentistry toTHU
Islamism.THU
