The poet isSUNrepresented by excerpts from favourites such as The LadySUNof Shalott and Ulysses.SUNSUNWith works by Thomas Hardy, Robert Frost, Andrew Marvell,SUNDylan Thomas and TS Eliot, as well as music from VaughanSUNWilliams, Britten, Hubert Parry, Richard Strauss andSUNArthus Bliss among others.SUNSUNMichael PenningtonSUNSUNBeth GoddardSUNSUNProducer NoteSUNSUNWhile reacquainting myself with the poetry of Tennyson forSUNthis bi-centenary edition of Words and Music, I was struckSUNby the choice many of his characters have to make betweenSUNaction and inaction, decision and indecision. MarianaSUNhelplessly waits for her absent lover in her remote moatedSUNgrange, wishing she were dead, whereas the Lady ofSUNShalott, who starts off in a similarly isolated andSUNhelpless situation makes the dangerous decision to breakSUNout of her lonely existence into the real world beyond theSUNenchanted mirror. And similarly the Lotos Eaters driftSUNinto a life of drowsy ease, whereas the aged UlyssesSUNdecides to press onwards, to strive, to seek, to find, andSUNnot to yield.SUNSUNUsing these characters from Tennyson as the mainstay ofSUNthe sequence I added other poems that explore the ideas ofSUNdecision, change, seizing the day, and fighting theSUNinevitable.SUNSUNSo we open with the languishing Mariana, followed by theSUNwater nymph Rusalka, who longs for her unattainable loverSUNin a similar vein, although she is more like the Lady ofSUNShalott in that she takes the ultimate risk to win hisSUNlove. Two poems on change and choice follow, and Hardy'sSUN'Young Man's Exhortation' to action is followed bySUNBilly Bragg's rendition of Blake's anthem toSUNdetermined striving, 'Jerusalem'. Andrew Marvell urgesSUNhis Coy Mistress to seize the day, while the Lady ofSUNShalott embodies the idea that it is better to have lovedSUNand lost, than never to have loved at all.SUNSUN(But Lancelot's final comment on his tragic lady ,SUN'she had a lovely face', is a bit offhand to say theSUNleast - great events can often go unappreciated, as inSUNAuden's 'Musee des Beaux Arts')SUNSUNThe still centre of the programme is Bach's achinglySUNbeautiful 'Schlummert Ein', a deep desire for eternalSUNsleep, followed by Shakespeare's mighty and disturbinglySUNlogical dissection of the dilemma between action andSUNinaction.SUNSUNFrom this point the sea starts rather insistently toSUNpresent itself as a metaphor for life and so three ofSUNBritten's Sea Interludes from 'Peter Grimes' echoSUNthe atmosphere of poems on the decision to push everSUNonwards.SUNSUNSo finally on to T S Eliot's idea that all explorationSUNand effort will eventually bring us somehow back to whereSUNwe started, although transformed, and to close, the poemSUNthat Tennyson wanted to be placed at the end of allSUNeditions of his poetry, 'Crossing the Bar', with itsSUNacceptance of the end of striving.SUNSUNElizabeth Funning (producer)SUNSUNRunning OrderSUNSUNReaders: Michael Pennington (MP) Beth Goddard (BG)SUNSUN00:00:00SUNDebussy : Voiles Melvyn Tan (piano)SUNDeux-Elles DXL1092 Track 2SUN00:02:10SUNTennyson : Mariana [Excerpt] (BG)SUN00:03.13SUNDvorak : Song to the Moon from RusalkaSUNRenee Fleming (soprano) London Symphony OrchestraSUNSir Georg Solti (conductor) DECCA 4752442 Track 9SUN00:09:08SUNKathleen Raine : Change (MP)SUN00:10:08SUNRobert Frost : The Road not taken (BG)SUN00:11:12SUNSondheim : The Road you didn't take (From Follies)SUNJohn McMartin Original Broadway CastSUNAngel ZDM 7646662 Track 5SUN00:13:53SUNHardy : A Young Man's Exhortation (MP)SUN00:14:59SUNBilly Bragg : 'Blake's Jerusalem'SUNFrom 'The Internationale' UTILITY UTIL11CDSUNTrack 4SUN00:17:22SUNMarvell : To his Coy mistress (MP)SUN00:19:35SUNVan Morrison : Don't worry about tomorrowSUNPolydor 531 789-2 CD1 Track 8SUN00:22:03SUNVerdi: La Traviata (Prelude to Act 1)SUNPhiladelphia Orchestra Eugene Ormandy (conductor)SUNSony CD 45544 Track 18SUN00:25:55SUNTennyson: In Memoriam [excerpt] (BG)SUN00:26:41SUNBliss: Tennyson: The Lady of Shalott (Ballet): PreludeSUNBBC Symphony Orchestra Sir Arthur Bliss (conductor)SUNBBC Radio Classics 1565691842 Track 4SUN00:29:24SUNTennyson: Lady of Shalott [excerpt] (BG)SUN00:31:19SUNBent Sorenson: The Lady of Shalott Cikada String QuartetSUNECM 4651352ECM Track 12SUN00:33:47SUNW H Auden: Musee des Beaux Arts (MP)SUN00:35:10SUNTennyson : The Lotus Eaters [Excerpt] (BG)SUN00:37:43SUNJ S Bach: Schlummert Ein, ihr matten augen (Cantata no 82)SUNAngelika Kirschlager (mezzo) Venice Baroque OrchestraSUNAndrea Marcon (director) Sony SK 89924 Track 3SUN00:47:07SUNShakespeare: Hamlet: To be or not to be… (MP)SUN00:49:23SUNBritten : Moonlight from Four Sea Interludes op 33aSUNLondon Symphony Orchestra Andre Previn (conductor)SUNEMI CDM 7 64736 2 Track 15SUN00:51:25SUNRosetti: The House of Life [excerpt] (MP)SUN00:52:25SUNBritten: Sunday Morning from Four Sea Interludes op 33aSUNLondon Symphony Orchestra Andre Previn (conductor)SUNEMI CDM 7 64736 2 Track 14SUN00:53:29SUNLouise Gluck: Odysseus' Decision (BG)SUN00:56:03SUNDylan Thomas: Do not go gentle into that good night (MP)SUN00:57:16SUNBritten: Storm from Four Sea Interludes op 33aSUNLondon Symphony Orchestra Andre Previn (conductor)SUNEMI CDM 7 64736 2 Track 16SUN00:59:49SUNTennyson: Ulysses [excerpt] (BG)SUN01:01:43SUNT S Eliot: Little Gidding [excerpt] from Four Quartets (BG)SUN01:01:47SUNStrauss : Death and Transfiguration, op 24SUNVienna Philharmonic Christoph von DohnanyiSUNDECCA 470 954-2 CD 3 Track 5SUN01:09:18SUNTennyson: Crossing the Bar (MP)SUN01:09:58SUNIves: Crossing the Bar BBC SingersSUNStephen Cleobury (director) Collins Classics 14792SUNTrack 4SUNMONMONDAY 10 AUGUST 2009MONMON00:00 Jazz Line-Up b00m0jzt (Listen)MONGary Husband's DriveMONJulian Joseph presents a session from drummer and pianistMONGary Husband's new project Drive, featuring Julian SiegelMONon tenor saxophone, Richard Turner on trumpet and MichaelMONJansich on bass.
