SUN SUN Following a major exhibition at the Pompidou in Paris, which SUN brought Gray new attention, she remains mysterious. She was SUN born into a wealthy, aristocratic family in County Wexford SUN in Ireland in 1878. Stifled by her mother's ostentation, she SUN fled to live in Paris where she dared to enter the SUN male-dominated professions of architecture and design as a SUN self-taught woman. SUN SUN In the first decades of the 20th Century, she created some SUN of her iconic chairs and tables - the Bibendum and Dragon SUN chairs among them. The Dragon Chair would sell for a record SUN £19 million in 2009. Her clients famously included the SUN fashion designers Jacques Doucet and Elsa Schiaparelli. SUN SUN Although she's better known for her furniture, she devoted SUN most of her working life to architectural projects. The SUN pale, coloured concrete E-1027 house, near Monaco, is a true SUN prototype for many architects today. SUN SUN It was her close friend, the architect and writer, Jean SUN Badovici who really encouraged her to focus on architecture, SUN writing that, "She knows that our time, with its new SUN possibilities of living, necessitates new ways of feeling. SUN SUN She earned the respect of the De Stijl movement and Le SUN Corbusier yet she openly contested the hard edged "machine" SUN maxim. Her instinctive anti-heroicism is partly why her work SUN is less known, but Le Corbusier also claimed E1027 as his SUN own when, uninvited he painted "gregarious" murals on the SUN interior walls, which Gray later commented "felt like rape". SUN SUN As Fiona reveals, Gray's modernity was in her rethinking of SUN the interior space; in how this could transform and become SUN used, rather than imposing its functionality on us. SUN SUN Contributors include Colm Toibin, Deborah Saunt, Beatriz SUN Colomina, Peter Adam, Joseph Rykwert, Pierre-Antoine Gatier, SUN Alice Rawsthorn and Elisabeth Lebovici. Janacek's marital SUN circumstances were mirrored in Tolstoy's novella 'The SUN Kreutzer Sonata', and his quartet of 1923 is a vivid SUN portrayal of the deep feelings the work stirred in him. TUE TUE 12:00 Composer of the Week b03w0hrx (Listen) TUE Cesar Franck (1822-1890), Marriage and Musicianship TUE TUE Donald Macleod continues his look at the life and career of TUE Belgian composer, César Franck. After years under the heel TUE of his domineering father, by his mid-twenties Franck is TUE prompted to stand up to the bullying Nicholas-Joseph, all in TUE the name of love. He was determined to marry one of his TUE pupils, to whom he dedicated a song. Franck even moved out TUE of his family home to join his future in-laws. When finally, TUE in 1848, he was able to marry the woman of his dreams, he TUE was faced with a riot - not between his parents and in-laws, TUE but between pro and anti-government forces! Marriage TUE broadened his outlook and introduced him to the pleasures of TUE literature, which in turn would inspire some of his TUE composition, such as the orchestral meditation, Ce qu'on TUE Entend sur la Montagne. Meanwhile, we find Franck eking out TUE a living by teaching, and by playing the organ. The revival TUE of French organ making by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll would TUE transform Franck's view of the instrument, and inspire him TUE to compose some of his finest music for the instrument. Donald Macleod THU continues his account of the life and times of the Belgian THU composer, looking at the turbulent background to his THU celebrated piano quintet. Now a professor of organ at the THU Paris Conservatoire, Franck continued to try his hand THU unsuccessfully at composing for the opera stage. With a plot THU deemed too violent for public performance, he salvaged some THU measure of self-respect by getting some of the music THU performed as a ballet - he even danced to some of it whilst THU in his nightshirt! THU THU Live from City Halls, Glasgow THU Presented by Ian Skelly THU THU Copland: Quiet City THU Beethoven: Piano Concerto No 3 in C minor THU THU 8.20 Interval THU Although Irwin Shaw's play Quiet City is largely forgotten, THU Copland's evocative music survives. During tonight's THU interval, in a specially written response to the music, THU performed at Glasgow's City Halls, Scottish writer Louise THU Welsh explores the city at night and the blurred lines THU between the natural world and the built environment. THU THU 8.40 THU Schumann: Symphony No 2 in C major THU THU Steven Osborne (piano) THU BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra THU Andrew Manze (conductor) THU THU As its bluesy trumpet and cor anglais melodies dialogue THU against gentle string harmonies, Copland's theatre music for THU Quiet City can be heard as an evocation of the isolation and THU loneliness of city life in the 1930s. In a more cheerful THU vein, conductor Andrew Manze, renowned for his work in the THU classical repertoire, continues the complete Beethoven Piano THU Concerto cycle with Steven Osborne and the BBC Scottish THU Symphony Orchestra. Tonight they perform the 3rd Concerto, THU in which the joyful C-major conclusion seems to pre-echo the THU finale of this evening's concert. THU And in spite of Schumann's troubled mental state at the time THU of writing, his Symphony No. 2 seems to sing with optimism. THU The great C-major work journeys over the course of its four THU movements from an exploratory chorale-like opening, through THU a vivacious scherzo, and a tender and searching Adagio, THU towards its ebullient and uncompromisingly triumphant THU conclusion. In France, FRI Franck was made a knight of the Legion of Honour for his FRI services to the Paris Conservatoire, but it was in Belgium FRI that he enjoyed some of his few successes. One of these was FRI the premiere of his violin sonata, composed as a wedding FRI present for his compatriot Ysaye, and first performed at the FRI wedding breakfast! Further strain on his own marriage came FRI with the composition of his erotically-charged symphonic FRI poem, Psyché; Mme Franck 'mislayed' her tickets to the first FRI performance. Franck was eventually struck down in the prime FRI of life through the most banal of accidents, involving a FRI horse-drawn bus, and he ended his days completing a final FRI testament to his profound religious faith - his Three FRI Chorales for organ.
