17:00 Discovering Music (b00gsq8g)SUN
Charles IvesSUN
American conductor David Robertson joins the BBCSO for anSUN
exploration of the music of one of his nation's mostSUN
innovative composers, Charles Ives. He considers theSUN
imaginative way Ives evokes a sense of place - inSUN
particular his homeland around Boston - and what some ofSUN
the wider implications of this might be. He focuses onSUN
three Ives masterpieces: Central Park in the Dark, TheSUN
Unanswered Question and Three Places in New England.SUN

There is also a feature about a complementary projectSUN
created by amateur musicians in London based on some ofSUN
Ives's musical ideas.SUN

West Gallery MusicSUN
Aled Jones explores the revival in West Gallery music, aSUN
term first used by Thomas Hardy to describe the galleriesSUN
at the west end of churches on which bands of musiciansSUN
would perform. People from the end of the 17th centurySUN
knew this as Psalmody, a practice which initially enabledSUN
parishioners to join in the singing of psalms. But itSUN
flourished to the point where the music was too complexSUN
for congregations to sing!SUN
SUN
The programme's mix of music from British choirs andSUN
beyond proves that the tradition is now once againSUN
thriving.SUN

Poet and Burns scholar Professor Robert Crawford of StSUN
Andrews University, examines how Robert Burns became aSUN
sensation at home and abroad. With contributions fromSUN
Douglas Dunn, who considers the strength of Burns's verse,SUN
Professor Fiona Stafford, who discusses whether Burns wasSUN
the first romantic poet and David Hopes, who asks whetherSUN
Burns's image is going to be renewed again in the makingSUN
of the new birthplace museum.SUN
SUN
There is also debate on Burns's newest scholarlySUN
incarnation as a radical, and Dr Leith Davies looking atSUN
how the once very male and clubbable world of the 'BurnsSUN
club' and Burns Supper now contends with new culturalSUN
fusion such as Gung Haggis Fat Choy, which melds BurnsSUN
night with the Chinese New Year celebrations.SUN

In the House of GodSUN
SUN
IntroductionSUN
This week's Words and music is a called 'In the House ofSUN
God', and centres on music and poetry dealing with placesSUN
of worship. These are not simply devotional pieces, butSUN
are more to do with the resonances and associations ofSUN
being in places of worship, whichever faith they celebrate.SUN
SUN
Churches, mosques and temples are a common feature of ourSUN
daily lives, even if we never visit them. They oftenSUN
dominate the streets, squares and villages where they areSUN
situated. And many poets have used the buildings as a waySUN
into a consideration of the nature of personal faith andSUN
doubt, as settings for the telling of stories, or as aSUN
gateway to the mystical in its broadest sense. In thisSUN
programme we hear Philip Larkin's famous account ofSUN
visiting a deserted church, Betjamen's mind and eyeSUN
wandering on a Sunday morning and Hardy's memories ofSUN
church music in his youth. The contemporary poet RogerSUN
Langley brings the Wall Tomb of Giacomo Surian toSUN
extraordinary life. We also hear about the mosque and theSUN
temple, and the ways in which those buildings are a placeSUN
for much more than worship, and a focus for thought andSUN
self-analysis.SUN
SUN
Places of worship have always been associated with music,SUN
and the programme includes music for use in worship bySUN
Bach, Parry and Byrd amongst others. But we also hearSUN
Robeson's wonderful longing for the 'home over Jordan' inSUN
Deep River, Debussy's astonishing evocation of the rise ofSUN
a sunken cathedral, and finally Britten's beautifulSUN
setting of Hardy's poem 'The Choirmaster's Funeral', inSUN
which the composer weaves the hymn tune Mount Ephraim intoSUN
a beatiful portrait of the church, its people and the lifeSUN
which it sustains.SUN

Julian Joseph focuses on the piano through a Neil CowleySUN
concert at the 2008 London Jazz Festival. As a 10-year-oldSUN

he entered the world of pop.SUN

In June 2006, Cowley formed his own label, Hide InsideSUN
