But that's far less true of music than SAT of visual art or science. In today's Music Feature SAT Catherine Bott goes in search of a composer born 500 years SAT ago who found that being a *musical* innovator was no easy SAT task: Nicola Vicentino. SAT SAT Imagine an octave divided into 31 parts - 31 very small SAT intervals 'microtones' - rather than the 12 semitones we're SAT used to today. Sounds weird - and it sounded weird to people SAT when Vicentino first came up with idea in the 1500s. 'But SAT opposition won't stop me' he said. He composed microtonal SAT music he built a 'superharpsichord' (archicembalo) and SAT 'superorgan' to play it he trained choirs to sing it he SAT wrote a book promoting it. SAT SAT 'Learning and investigating new things - that's human SAT nature' was Vicentino's motto. Every page of his book is SAT filled with 'my ideas'. His radical musical ideas provoked SAT every possible reaction - from vitriolic hostility to SAT fanatical support. Traditionalists were horrified. Some of SAT the most powerful people in Italy gave Vicentino their SAT patronage. Adoring pupils dubbed him Arcimusico - the SAT Arch-Musician. SAT SAT In this Music Feature Catherine Bott uncovers Vicentino's SAT remarkable story exploring what it meant to be a musical SAT innovator in sixteenth-century Italy. How did Vicentino SAT come up with his ideas? How did he try to sell them? Why SAT did people react in the way they did? What were the SAT consequences - for Vicentino himself and for the future of music? SAT SAT Perhaps the biggest obstacle Vicentino faced is that his SAT music is very hard to perform. But in the twenty-first SAT century people are at last beginning to prove it's possible. SAT Catherine Bott has a go herself and meets other people SAT who've tried - including members of the BBC Singers who SAT tackled Vicentino's music specially for this programme with SAT conductor James Weeks. SAT SAT With Anton Lesser as Vicentino and contributions from SAT Manfred Cordes Davide Daolmi Mary Hollingsworth Margaret SAT Hunter Lewis Jones Laurie Stras James Weeks Jon Wild and SAT members of the BBC Singers. SAT SAT 13:00 The Early Music Show b00rpty3 (Listen) SAT Antonio de Cabezon SAT SAT Catherine Bott presents a profile of the 16th century SAT Spanish composer Antonio de Cabezon. Blind from childhood SAT Cabezon quickly rose to prominence as a virtuoso organist SAT and entered the service of the Spanish Royal Family in 1538 SAT where he remained for his entire career. From 1543 when SAT Prince Felipe became Regent of Spain Cabezon and his younger SAT brother both accompanied the prince on his numerous journeys SAT throughout Europe: Italy Germany The Netherlands and SAT England. His work influenced many other major composers of SAT the day - not least his countryman Tomas Luis de Victoria. SAT Cabezon was among the most important composers of his time SAT and arguably the first major Iberian keyboard composer. Lucy talks SAT to Khyam about his roots and is given a personal SAT introduction to the Iraqi maqam tradition of music. SAT SAT Khyam is a London based musician of Iraqi descent and the SAT first beneficiary of Radio 3's World Routes Academy which SAT aims to support and inspire young world-music artists by SAT bringing them together with an internationally renowed SAT mentor belonging to the same tradition. Khyam's mentor is SAT the celebrated Iraqi guitarist singer and composer Ilham al SAT Madfai who lives in Jordan and who Khyam will be working SAT with in Lebanon Syria and Jordan later this year. SAT SAT BBC Radio 3 World Routes Academy is about celebrating world SAT music talent by both supporting existing performers through SAT exploring new collaborations and enabling younger musicians SAT to develop and hone their skills. The scheme offers both SAT participants the opportunity to share their musical SAT experiences with particular emphasis on the importance of SAT the mentor passing on his extensive musical experience and SAT cultural heritage to the younger musician. Performance is SAT key to the project and the musicians will feature in BBC SAT studio sessions workshops performance and concerts. SAT SAT The forthcoming collaboration between Khyam Allami and Ilham SAT al-Madfai reflects the development of traditions amongst SAT musical refugees in their new homes and how their desire to SAT fit in with their new environment is both challenged and SAT inspired by their yearning for the land that made them the SAT musicians they are. Ilham left Iraq for Jordan and his SAT musical influences reflect western influences and genres. SAT Khyam's family left Iraq for Syria and then London and it SAT seems that as he travels further from his homeland the SAT closer he is drawn to his roots and the hard-core musical SAT traditions of his native Iraq. SUN SUN The act of rocking a child to sleep with a gentle tune is SUN one of our most simple and natural forms of music-making. SUN They are common to all cultures and ages and though they are SUN varied they all share remarkable similarities. Their words SUN are soothing using onomatopoeic and nonsense sounds like the SUN 'ninna nanna' of Italy and the English 'lulla lulla'. SUN SUN Often these lullabies are passed down from generation to SUN generation and are known throughout regions and countries. SUN But they are also transformed by this oral transmission. SUN Many look outward to nocturnal themes or to daily chores and SUN the baby itself. SUN SUN Religious themes are also widespread. By its very nature the SUN lullaby has a certain gentle spirituality and its serenity SUN is particularly suited to the Nativity. It reminds us of SUN Mary's pure devotion to the baby Jesus her gentle care and SUN the universality of this particular kind of miracle. Many SUN Christmas carols incorporate gentle rocking rhythms simple SUN structures repetitive motifs or common phrases like the SUN 'Lully Lullay' of the well-known Coventry Carol. Many were SUN also well-known secular tunes that were given devotional SUN subjects in an attempt to lead audiences away from profane SUN subjects. Others depict holy figures in easily-recognised SUN scenes from daily life - Joseph rocking the cradle or Mary SUN washing nappies. SUN SUN As well as featuring traditional music and anonymous SUN composers from around the world the programme features SUN pieces by English composers Anthony Holborne William Byrd SUN and John Bennet. Timed SUN to coincide with the first major exhibition of their work in SUN a century - opening at Glasgow's Kelvingrove gallery and SUN later transferring to the Royal Academy - this programme SUN explores Scotland's first modern artists. SUN SUN A portrait of a city as much as these painters A L Kennedy's SUN witty insightful journey takes her deep into the history and SUN cultural soul of Glasgow. She talks to leading biographer of SUN the Boys Roger Billcliffe to establish how the city's low SUN cultural standing galvanized the painters' defiant attitude SUN a spirit which would later inspire Charles Rennie Mackintosh SUN and countless others. Legendary Glasgow author and artist SUN Alasdair Gray describes the unexpected inspiration to be SUN drawn from the great industrial heritage while painter Sandy SUN Moffat makes a moving case for the enduring relevance of the SUN Boys. SUN SUN Today Glasgow's vibrant arts scene is taken for granted and SUN it churns out Turner Prize nominees virtually every year. SUN But a century ago it was unheard of for the city's artists SUN to be taken seriously beyond their heavily industrialized SUN home town especially in the face of Edinburgh's staid SUN cultural elitism. Taking their cue from the radical French SUN realists James Guthrie and John Lavery among others produced SUN some of the most influential paintings ever to come out of SUN the country and established the city's art community for SUN generations to come. SUN SUN 22:45 Words and Music b00rpvtd (Listen) SUN The South Country SUN SUN Inspired by the recent republication of Edward Thomas's SUN essay collection The South Country the weekly sequence of SUN music poetry and prose celebrates the landscape of southern SUN England in particular three counties in which the poet loved SUN to walk: Sussex Hampshire and Wiltshire. SUN SUN Tamsin Greig and Neil Pearson read prose by fellow SUN observer-wanderers Gilbert White William Cobbett and Richard SUN Jefferies and poetry by such lovers of the south as Flora SUN Thompson Andrew Young Hilaire Belloc Molly Holden and of SUN course Edward Thomas himself. The music includes orchestral SUN music and songs by John Ireland Michael Tippett The Copper SUN Family and the English Acoustic Collective among others. SUN SUN It was the recent republication of Edward Thomas’s SUN collection of prose essays The South Country that gave me SUN the idea for this edition of Words and Music. I had SUN already included poems by Thomas in previous programmes and SUN felt the power of his clear-eyed and unsentimental SUN descriptions of landscape nature and weather grow on me with SUN each one. Though born in London of Welsh descent Thomas SUN lived for much of his adult life in Hampshire and the SUN atmosphere of the southern woods and hills in which he loved SUN to walk is conveyed with as strong a sense of place as you SUN will find in any writer’s work. SUN SUN Thomas took the title of his collection from that of a poem SUN in praise of the Sussex Downs by Hilaire Belloc but himself SUN extends the description to encompass ‘all that country which SUN is dominated by the Downs or by the English Channel’. SUN Emboldened perhaps by my own knowledge and love for this SUN part of the world (more of this anon) I took it upon myself SUN to make a further redefinition so that for the purposes of SUN this programme the South Country consists of the SUN central-southern counties of Hampshire Sussex and Wiltshire. SUN SUN Thomas makes three appearances not in extracts from The SUN South Country but in a death-haunted vision of a deep-sided SUN valley and in two poems celebrating timeless south-country SUN characters. Belloc’s poem anticipating a return to his SUN beloved Sussex is also there; and I was delighted to find SUN one expressing similar feelings for Hampshire by Flora SUN Thompson who although best-known for her descriptions of SUN Oxfordshire village life in the Lark Rise trilogy lived for SUN many years in the county working as a postmistress. SUN Another famous Hampshire resident was Jane Austen and the SUN sight of the Channel at Spithead in particular must have SUN made a special impression for it drew from her a rare brief SUN landscape description in Mansfield Park. SUN SUN Elsewhere there are lyrical evocations by Siegfried Sassoon SUN Francis William Bourdillon and Andrew Young (a Scotsman who SUN came to love the south of England!) a brisk ‘run of the SUN downs’ by Rudyard Kipling and prose paeans by those astute SUN 18th-century observer-roamers Gilbert White and William SUN Cobbett and their Victorian counterpart Richard Jefferies. SUN To end there is a perfect funeral poem for all southern folk SUN by Molly Holden. SUN SUN The music is often less specific in its subject-matter but SUN includes pieces by a spread of English composers who loved SUN the landscape of the south from John Ireland to Gustav Holst SUN and Hubert Parry to Michael Tippett. There are also SUN earthier contributions from folksingers Shirley Collins Tom SUN Willett and Bob and Ron Copper and a lilting recreation of a SUN train-ride from Salisbury to London from the English SUN Acoustic Collective. SUN SUN Earlier I mentioned my own love of the South Country. I SUN was born and grew up in north-east Hampshire where Thomas SUN White Cobbett and Austen were familiar local heroes (I SUN remember the delight with which visiting The White Horse pub SUN once near Steep I learnt that this was where he liked to SUN drink and that it was the subject of one of his very first SUN poems). Coming from near Aldershot I recognise too the SUN ‘fighter-squadron’s drone’ mentioned by Sassoon in ‘On SUN Scratchbury Camp’; and for good measure I remember singing SUN ‘I love my love’ the folk-tune which opens the programme in SUN Holst’s arrangement in my school choir. I knew therefore SUN that this edition of Words and Music would strike a personal SUN note for me but even I was not prepared for the powerful SUN nostalgic and emotional pull hearing Tamsin Greig and Neil SUN Pearson read these poems and prose extracts would exert. SUN Thomas’s widow Helen wrote how after her husband had joined SUN up in 1915 and been sent to France he would remember the SUN South Country from his dugout mapping out in his mind the SUN places where he had walked knowing perhaps that he would SUN never see them again (he was killed at the Battle of Arras SUN in 1917). Today I find myself living in rather less SUN dangerous circumstances and with only London not the sea SUN separating me from my southern ‘home’; but like Thomas’s my SUN visions and remembrances of clear downs chalky beech-hangers SUN and hollow lanes refuse to leave me. MON MON 12:00 Composer of the Week b00rpvxz (Listen) MON William Byrd (1543-1623), Episode 1 MON MON Listen to his music and you'd think 16th-century William MON Byrd was the very model of an Elizabethan citizen a refined MON character capable of producing some of the most beautiful MON music for the church ever composed as well as inventive MON keyboard and vocal pieces which charm the ear and the mind MON in equal measure. But as Donald Macleod discovers Byrd was MON also a complex man who pushed the religious mores of his age MON to the limit and simultaneously indulged in a lifetime of MON petty-fogging legal cases which even Victor Meldrew would MON have been proud of. MON MON His story takes us to Lincoln where he took his first major MON job. The atmosphere couldn't have been more unsuitable; a MON Royal inspection had decided that the music was far too MON lavish for the new Protestant regime and recommended not MON just simplifying the worship but even the dismantling of the MON organ. But this kind of challenge was to be the making of MON Byrd; again and again he would find ways to work the system MON and was quickly found lavishing the cathedral's money on MON organ upgrades and scouting for new chorister talent. MON MON Later in the week we focus on squarely on his Catholic MON defiance in works such as 'Why do I use my paper pen and MON ink' which refers explicitly to Edmund Campion brutally MON executed at Tyburn. And we hear how Byrd was repeatedly MON reported to the authorities for failing to attend church and MON even prevented his servants from worshipping. His personal MON connections read like an episode of Crimewatch countless MON leading Catholics whose names were circulated by the MON authorities for their religious dissent. MON MON But we also explore another more human side to Byrd: his MON irrepressible entrepreneurial spirit. This saw him take one MON of music's greatest ever financial risks as he set up the MON country's first ever music publishing concern with his great MON mentor Thomas Tallis and which at first pushed him to the MON brink of bankruptcy. And as well as musical interests we MON find him pursuing a hectic life as a property speculator MON forever in the courts evicting tenants or battling over some MON arcane right of way. For almost 25 years Hambling one of Britain's THU best known artists has painted a cross every Good Friday. THU It's a kind of personal ritual - a tradition started when THU she created the first one in memory of her mother in the THU 1980s. This year Hambling's varied images of the crucifix THU are being displayed in the grounds of Canterbury Cathedral THU alongside Easter images by another renowned painter the THU artist Craigie Aitchison who died in December. THU THU But as Anne discovers it seems Hambling and Aitchison are THU not alone in the artistic community in being so attracted to THU the crucifixion despite the secular tone of most of today's THU art. Artists both religious and non-religious are THU continually drawn to the cross in their work - in many cases THU for sensitively exploring secular and personal topics. THU THU Maggi Hambling shows Anne McElvoy around the history of her THU crucifixion paintings - and Anne presses her on a key THU question: what for Hambling is the chief artistic power of THU this symbol - and why does she think its artistic use THU apparently manages to transcend religion itself?
