Plus the latest volume of Benjamin Britten's SAT letters and an interview with violinist Irvine Arditti. SAT SAT András Schiff SAT For the pianist András Schiff, Beethoven's sonatas are SAT gigantic Himalayan peaks of musical and human achievement SAT whose complete traversal have become an essential part of SAT his musical life. Having already played them all 20 times, SAT and recorded them too, he's just embarked on yet another SAT survey of the 32 sonatas at London’s Wigmore Hall as part of SAT a four city tour. Schiff joins Tom Service in the studio and SAT at the piano reveals how the pieces have accompanied his SAT whole life in music, why he waited until he was 50 to SAT attempt the last two sonatas, Op 110 and 111, and what SAT listeners who come on his complete Beethoven expedition can SAT expect to experience. SAT SAT Benjamin Britten at 99 SAT Benjamin Britten would have been 99 on Thursday 22nd SAT November – St. Cecilia’s Day. In today’s programme Tom looks SAT at two new books celebrating Britten. Firstly A Life in SAT Letters, the sixth and final volume of a collection of the SAT composer’s correspondence, this volume covering the period SAT from 1966-1976 the year of Britten’s death. The letters are SAT extremely revealing, with some unflinching and moving SAT evidence of what Britten went through in the last few SAT illness-wracked years of his life and the tenderness of his SAT relationship with Peter Pears. Dame Janet Baker features in SAT the very first letter in the book, the renowned SAT mezzo-soprano for whom Britten wrote one of his last SAT masterpieces, Phaedra, in 1976. Tom talks to Dame Janet and SAT writer Michael Kennedy, who also knew Britten, and tries to SAT establish whether these letters are essential illumination SAT or give the reader too much information. Tom also speaks to SAT the book’s editors Mervyn Cooke and Philip Reed who provide SAT astonishing detail in the notes that accompany each of SAT Britten's letters. The second book is Britten in Pictures – SAT Tom hears about the camera-shy Britten and the pictures he SAT appeared in during his career. Lucy Walker selected the SAT photographs from thousands in the Britten-Pears Archive and SAT photographer Nigel Luckhurst managed to capture the real SAT Britten in sessions towards the end of his life. SAT SAT Irvine Arditti SAT Ever since the violinist Irvine Arditti founded the quartet SAT which bears his name he has been responsible for almost SAT single-handedly making the string quartet a vital force in SAT contemporary music. He and the quartet have commissioned SAT more than 500 pieces in nearly four decades, and have SAT established a performance practice for the quarters of SAT Elliott Carter, Brian Ferneyhough, Helmut Lachenmann - and SAT literally hundreds of others - that could not have existed SAT without him. Arditti tells Tom how his life has been shaped SAT by his relationships with new music and its composers, from SAT Cage to Stockhausen - and beyond, as he prepares to appear SAT at this year’s Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, SAT highlights of which can be heard on BBC Radio 3. SAT SAT Vaughan Williams own religious views were complex - as the SAT son of an Anglican vicar and a relative of Charles Darwin SAT they probably couldn't be anything else. When he was an SAT undergraduate he professed to being an atheist but always SAT mantained a spiritual side even if he wasn't a practicing SAT Christian. He wrote a Mass and took on the job of editing SAT the English Hymnal and included his own hymn tune 'York' in SAT the opening bars of the Pilgrim's Progress. Vaughan Williams SAT wrote his own libretto and in his hands Bunyan's tale SAT becomes universal - Christian becomes Pilgrim and all SAT references to Christ are missing from what the composer said SAT was a 'morality' rather than an opera, in doing so Bunyan's SAT Christian story becomes something much more universal. SAT SAT Bunyan's tale is a dream of a quest with Bunyan himself as SAT the dreamer and the pilgrim his alter ego who overcomes SAT trials and tribulations on the real and symbolic journey SAT from his home in the 'City of Destruction' to the 'Celestial SAT City'. Along the way he receives guidance from the SAT Evangelist, meets objections from his four neighbours SAT Obstinate, Pliable, Mistrust and Timorous, is given succour SAT at the House Beautiful before fighting and defeating the SAT fiend Apollyon. He is imprisoned after false evidence is SAT presented against him when he refuses to be seduced by the SAT flesh and material delights of Vanity Fair. Escaping he SAT continues on his way, Mr and Mrs By-Ends refuse to join him SAT as they will only continue when the path is easy, Pilgrim SAT pushes on aided by 'The Shepherds of the Delectable SAT Mountains' who point him straight at the gates of the SAT Celestial City where Christian finds eternal salvation. SAT SAT Yoshi Oida's acclaimed new production for English National SAT Opera is set in Bunyan's prison - with baritone Roland Wood SAT playing the roles of both Pilgrim and John Bunyan and SAT Bunyan's fellow prisoners taking on all the other parts from SAT the serene spiritual guides of the House Beautiful through SAT to the gaudy pleasure seekers of Vanity Fair. SAT SAT PART ONE SAT Imprisoned, John Bunyan is finishing his Pilgrim’s Progress. SAT The book is about Bunyan’s dream. The Pilgrim from his dream SAT appears with a heavy burden on his back. Evangelist points SAT the Pilgrim in the direction of the Wicket Gate. Four SAT neighbours –Pliable, Obstinate, Mistrust and Timorous – warn SAT him of the dangers that lie ahead. The Pilgrim, however, SAT ignores them and follows Evangelist’s instructions to find SAT the Celestial City. The Pilgrim asks for his burden to be SAT eased. Three Shining Ones greet him and relieve him of his SAT burden. The Pilgrim knocks at the door of the House SAT Beautiful and is greeted by the Interpreter and the House’s SAT occupants. Following an initiation ritual, the Pilgrim SAT enters the House. Watchful prays for all who rest within the SAT House Beautiful. A Herald wants to know who will take the SAT King’s highway. The Pilgrim steps forward and is made ready SAT for his journey. The Doleful Creatures, who inhabit the SAT Valley of Humiliation, surround the Pilgrim. Apollyon SAT challenges the Pilgrim and they fight. Though victorious, SAT the Pilgrim is exhausted and Two Heavenly Beings (the Branch SAT Bearer and the Cup Bearer) restore his energies. Evangelist SAT appears and presents the Pilgrim with the Staff of SAT Salvation, the Roll of the Word and the Key of Promise. He SAT warns him of the temptations to be found in the town of SAT Vanity. At Vanity Fair, everything the world can offer is SAT available for sale, including the souls of men. Lord Lechery SAT offers women. When the Pilgrim enters, he is surrounded by SAT the crowd, among whom are Judas Iscariot and Pontius Pilate, SAT and well-known figures who succumbed to the lure of gold or SAT power. Madam Bubble, Madam Wanton and Lord Lechery tempt the SAT Pilgrim with carnal pleasure and power. He dismisses them SAT and defies their Prince Beelzebub. After hearing evidence SAT against the Pilgrim, Lord Hate-Good sentences him to prison SAT and death. SAT SAT PART TWO SAT Alone in prison, the Pilgrim feels abandoned. He remembers SAT the Key of Promise given to him earlier by Evangelist, and SAT uses it to escape and resume his journey. The Pilgrim SAT interrupts a Woodcutter’s boy to ask how far it is to the SAT Celestial City.He encounters Mister and Madam By-Ends who SAT refuse to accompany him. The Pilgrim sets out alone for the SAT Delectable Mountains. The Pilgrim meets Three Shepherds. He SAT asks them if he is on the right path to the Celestial City. SAT They invite him to rest for a time with them and the voice SAT of a bird is heard. A Celestial Messenger appears and tells SAT the Pilgrim that he must prepare to cross the river before SAT he can reach the City. Anointed by the Shepherds, the SAT Pilgrim passes through the waters. Voices from the Celestial SAT City are heard and the Pilgrim enters the City. The SAT Pilgrim’s story has ended. John Bunyan is seen in prison SAT again. SAT SAT 21:30 Between the Ears b01nznsd (Listen) SAT Belongings SAT SAT Decisions about what possessions to keep and what to throw SAT away can be agonising, raising fundamental questions about SAT their true value. In Belongings we follow three people over SAT six months as they make some painful decisions, move house SAT and start again somewhere smaller. The outcomes are often SAT unexpected. SAT SAT Mike and Sue need to find a bungalow so Mike, who recently SAT had a stroke, doesn't have to cope with stairs. The SAT belongings he desperately wants to keep, although perhaps SAT now unnecessary, symbolise both his past fitness and his SAT potential future happiness. SAT SAT Nina is moving to a retirement flat and prides herself on a SAT life free of attachment to material things, but over the SAT years she has amassed a fascinating collection of SAT possessions that hold powerful memories for her. SAT SAT Patricia was a successful soprano, and now in her 80s has SAT many boxes full of treasures from her career. She finds it SAT hard to throw things away, they are as she says: "my life". SAT SAT For many people possessions are just "stuff". The stories of SAT Pat, Mike and Nina are interspersed with those for whom the SAT disposal and moving of belongings is how they make their SAT living. We hear the detached comments of auctioneers, SAT removal men and estate agents. The intention of Belongings SAT is to make the listener lose themselves in the lives of the SAT downsizers, but also to make them think "what do I value SAT most?". SUN SUN In various private and public collections in the UK he SUN discovered books with interesting inscriptions and SUN annotations - and he tried to construct a sort of "bookshelf SUN biography" which told the story of Wilde's life and literary SUN career through the books he read. The marginalia revealed a SUN lot about Wilde's influences, his tastes and his SUN relationships. But these books represented only a fraction SUN of those sold off in 1895. Some ended up in far flung SUN corners of the world and in this Sunday Feature, Thomas SUN Wright goes in search of Wilde's West Coast Collection. SUN SUN Tom begins his journey with Oscar Wilde fans in a gay bar in SUN Los Angeles before taking in the delights of Venice Beach SUN and travelling to the William Andrews Clark Memorial Library SUN where he discovers a collection of books which reveal some SUN less familiar aspects of Wilde's life, art and character. SUN SUN The books, housed in a giant vault to help protect the Oscar SUN Wilde markings and marginalia, include a compilation of SUN musical hall songs called Dans La Rue by Aristide Bruant - SUN the legendary singer-songwriter who had met Wilde during his SUN trip to Paris in 1891. SUN SUN There's Wilde's copy of Lord Ronald Gower's A Pocket Guide SUN to the Public and Private Galleries of Holland and Belgium SUN which reveals much about his passion for art, and some of SUN his artistic tastes. The notes in it attest to Wilde's keen SUN interest in painters such as Velasquez and Rembrandt. SUN SUN Thomas analyses some of Wilde's collection of the classics, SUN finds a copy of The Picture of Dorian Gray inscribed to Lord SUN Alfred Douglas and discovers new material about his Irish SUN nationalism and his links to Gladstone, Asquith and the SUN Liberal Party. He even finds a book that belonged to Wilde's SUN wife, Constance. SUN SUN "The most fascinating book I found in LA was Wilde's copy of SUN the "Eighty Club" pamphlet. Wilde's interest in SUN party-politics shows us an unfamiliar facet of his life - he SUN was a man who famously "lived more lives than one", and his SUN party-political life deserves to be appreciated along with SUN all the others," says Thomas Wright. "The book proved that SUN Wilde was an active member of a Liberal Party think-tank; SUN and that he socialised with the prominent members of the SUN party," he adds. SUN SUN Among those he meets during his journey are fellow Oscar SUN Wilde expert Tracey Connell and C Robert Holloway - SUN award-winning author of a novel in which he corresponds with SUN the ghost of Oscar Wilde. And to help analyse Wilde's West SUN Coast Collection, Thomas meets up with Oscar Wilde's SUN grandson - author, journalist and editor of Wilde's letters, SUN Merlin Holland. SUN SUN Wilde's West Coast Collection is produced by Ashley Byrne SUN and is a Made in Manchester Production for BBC Radio 3. Andrei Demidov, an internationally-acclaimed - SUN and controversial - novelist has just been awarded the Nobel SUN Prize for Literature. Outspoken and notoriously critical of SUN the Soviet authorities, Demidov's novel 'Sunset', an SUN exploration of the realities of the Soviet Union's SUN involvement in Afghanistan, has been banned in his homeland, SUN but thanks to the actions of Andrei's English publisher, SUN Michael, has qualified and been awarded literature's most SUN prestigious honour. SUN SUN Living under a restricted movement order in the countryside SUN outside Moscow with his wife Alexandra, Andrei is faced with SUN a difficult decision. The Soviet Authorities are not about SUN to let one of their most vociferous critics travel to make SUN an acceptance speech in Sweden denouncing the regime to an SUN international audience. They might permit him to leave the SUN country and live out the rest of his days as an exile, never SUN to return to his beloved Russia. Or, he could acquiesce with SUN the authorities, refuse the award, and in doing so ensure SUN the freedom of his estranged son Nikolai. SUN SUN But in a world where everyone is manipulating everyone else SUN for their own private or political ends, how much autonomy SUN does Andrei really have? Is he master of his own fate, or a SUN pawn in a game with greater stakes than he might imagine? SUN SUN The history of the Nobel Prize for Literature is no stranger SUN to such controversies. From Boris Pasternak - who was SUN awarded and then rejected the prize for 'Doctor Zhivago' - SUN to Harold Pinter, who used his Nobel acceptance speech to SUN denounce American foreign policy regarding the war in Iraq, SUN the prize has frequently brought into focus the polemics of SUN that eternal triumvirate which Pinter himself addressed in SUN his speech: 'Art, Truth and Politics'. How far should art SUN and artists engage in politics? Is personal veracity more SUN important than utilitarianism? At what price does artistic SUN integrity come? In this new drama for Radio 3, Doug Lucie SUN pits such ideals against that of 'family' as Andrei's own SUN future and that of his wife and son hang in the balance. For SUN Andrei and his family, the prospect of freedom becomes as SUN much of a prize as the award itself - but what exactly is SUN freedom anyway? Glazunov, who studied with MON Balakirev and Rimsky-Korsakov, took the Russian public by MON storm with his First Symphony, before he'd even turned MON eighteen. Deemed to be the future leader of the Nationalist MON music movement, his symphony caught the attention of the MON timber merchant Mitrofan Belyayev, who then patronised MON Glazunov including publishing the young composer's works. By MON 1899 he was appointed professor at the St Petersburg MON Conservatoire, where he eventually became Director. Although MON Glazunov experienced many successes in Russia and abroad, MON such as his ballet The Seasons, and his Violin Concerto, he MON eventually became too involved in conservatoire politics, MON and composing took second place. During revolutionary events MON in Russia, Glazunov shielded his students as far as he MON could, in particular standing up against anti-Semitism. MON However the strains of daily life and Conservatoire politics MON were eventually too much, and Glazunov left Russia in 1928, MON and never returned. By this time his music was considered MON old fashioned, and he himself a relic of a bygone age. After MON launching himself into a busy conducting tour of Europe, he MON eventually died in Paris in 1936. MON MON Donald Macleod explores the early life and career of MON Aleksandr Glazunov. Originally tutored by Rimsky-Korsakov, MON and to a lesser extent Balakirev, Glazunov initially MON demonstrated similar musical interests such as Exoticism, MON which can be heard in his Spanish Song. He was soon viewed MON as the golden boy, with the premiere of his First Symphony, MON although some critics suggested that his family must have MON paid for the work to be produced by other musicians. MON MON The First Symphony was a huge success, and Glazunov was soon MON introduced to Mitrofan Belyayev, who went on to publish and MON promote Glazunov's works in Russia and abroad. Glazunov MON amongst other composers would frequently attend Friday MON evening gatherings at Belyayev's house, where they'd all try MON out their new works, including Glazunov's First String MON Quartet. Glazunov's pieces were soon being regularly MON performed during the Russian Symphony Concert season, and he MON started to produce a number of orchestral works, including MON his two Overtures on Greek Themes. WED WED Glazunov by the 1890s was an international success, and his WED own music was now looking outside his native Russian borders WED for inspiration. Around this time he became good friends WED with Tchaikovsky, another composer whose music looked more WED to the West. Glazunov had faced a creative crisis, the WED novelty of stardom had started to wear thin, and he now WED began to re-evaluate his music. Between 1888 and 1892 he WED composed 27 works, including his String Quintet which he WED dedicated to the Imperial Russian Music Society. WED WED With Glazunov's increasing interest in the music of the WED West, which can be heard in his First Concert Waltz, he was WED now being hailed as the "Russian Brahms". He also continued WED to compose symphonies, and in 1895 produced his Fifth WED Symphony, which has become one of his few works to still be WED performed regularly today. It was also in the 1890s that WED Glazunov moved into a new line of composition, music for the WED stage. WED WED Britten : Canadian Carnival WED Shostakovich : Violin Concerto No.1 WED WED 8.15: Interval WED WED Prokofiev : Symphony No.7 WED WED James Ehnes, violin WED conductor Kirill Karabits, WED WED Britten composed his light-hearted Canadian Carnival as a WED souvenir of a visit to Toronto in 1939. A hoedown is WED enlivened by surprising harmonies and rhythmic hiccups, the WED waltz that forms a relaxed interlude keeps falling out of WED step with its accompaniment, and the familiar song WED "Alouette" is subject to raucous variation. WED WED Shostakovich likened his First Violin Concerto to "a WED symphony for solo violin and orchestra". There is a brooding WED opening movement, rousing scherzo and whirling finale but WED the expressive heart of the concerto lies in its third WED movement, the darkly hued and deeply emotional passacaglia, WED richly imbued with philosophic meditation and sad lyricism. WED WED Prokofiev wrote his Seventh Symphony after returning to WED Russia from the West in 1933. It is richly lyrical and WED immediately ingratiating, the style deemed appropriate by WED the government to inspire the Soviet masses. "It is the duty WED of the composer to serve his fellow men, to beautify human WED life and show the way to a radiant future," he wrote in his WED 1946 autobiography. This Symphony not only made those words WED manifest (the andante is one of the most effusively WED melodious pieces that Prokofiev ever created), but also WED showed that he was able to create music of surpassing WED quality under the tightest ideological strictures. FRI FRI By the start of the First World War, Glazunov was feeling FRI very out of touch. His friends Belyayev, Rimsky-Korsakov and FRI Lyadov had all died, and his music was seen by younger FRI generations as old fashioned. One student, Shostakovich, FRI described Glazunov as the last of the Mohicans. This period FRI in Russia was dangerous, especially for people like FRI Glazunov, as he was a member of the minor nobility. He and FRI his mother found themselves living in two rooms, with little FRI heating and little to eat, and by this point he was FRI dependent upon alcohol. It was during these miserable years FRI for Glazunov that he composed his romantic Second Piano FRI Concerto. FRI FRI Glazunov was still active on behalf of his students at the FRI St Petersburg Conservatoire, shielding them from political FRI harm such as anti-Semitism. However, the strains of those FRI turbulent times and his poor living conditions were taking FRI their toll. Although in 1922 he was named Peoples Artist, FRI and awarded better living conditions, his response was that FRI the Conservatoire needed more wood to keep his students FRI warm. By 1928 Glazunov was fully exhausted. He left for the FRI Schubert centenary in Vienna and never returned to Russia. FRI He launched a conducting career, touring Europe and going FRI into a studio to record his ballet The Seasons. It was in FRI Paris, 1936, that Glazunov died. His remains were FRI transferred back to Russia in 1972.
