SAT Henry Fair; ; Sir Peter Maxwell Davies © Martin Lengemann; SAT Dmitri Shostakovich © BBC SAT In 1970 Leonard Bernstein stated that Mahler was the last SAT great symphonist, and that the ‘symphonic jig’ was up. Today SAT opinions are divided - some contemporary composers have SAT disregarded the form, whilst others have written more than SAT any other composers in history - Finnish symphonist Leif SAT Segerstam has recently completed his 251st. So is the SAT symphony still the highest form that composers ought to SAT aspire to? Is its survival symbiotically related to the SAT economics of the symphony orchestra? And does the weight of SAT the central European symphonic tradition sit heavily on SAT today’s composer’s shoulders? SAT SAT Tom Service is joined in the studio by Managing Director of SAT the Barbican Centre Nicholas Kenyon, Berlin based music SAT critic Shirley Apthorp, and composer of 7 symphonies David SAT Matthews to discuss the contemporary symphonic scenes of SAT Scandinavia, Germany, Russia, the UK and USA, and to SAT consider the fate of the genre. SAT SAT Mozart's 6 'Haydn' quartets are both an affectionate tribute SAT to the composer's teacher and a showcase of all that he had SAT learned from his mentor - 'the fruit of long and arduous SAT work' as Mozart himself explained. Debussy's Quartet (which SAT he called Op.10, despite otherwise never using opus SAT numbers!) was written towards the end of the 19th-century SAT and was initially regarded as phenomenally difficult to SAT play. SAT SAT 21:00 Between the Ears b017lym7 (Listen) SAT Horse SAT SAT 'Horse' is a new poem for radio by the Northumbrian poet SAT Katrina porteous and the composer and electronic music SAT pioneer Peter Zinoviev. It was commissioned by Radio 3 for SAT Between the Ears, its series for innovative feature making, SAT for the first time performed and recorded in front of a live SAT audience, at the Free Thinking Festival in The Sage, SAT Gateshead. SAT SAT The poem is inspired by a 3,000 year old figure of a horse, SAT cut into the chalk of a hill near Uffington, that leaps SAT across the Oxfordshire landscape. It is scored for two SAT voices, the poet and the actor Steven Hawksby, and two SAT computers, played by Zinoviev, who developed the machine SAT that made Dalek voices possible and the synthesizer used by SAT Pink Floyd on 'Dark Side of the Moon'. He has also worked SAT with Stockhausen and Harrison Birtwistle. SAT SAT All the sounds used in the music are derived from recordings SAT which Peter Zinoviev made of King Harry Ferry, which crosses SAT the River Fal in Cornwall on huge chains. Katrina Porteous SAT found rhythms and word-sounds in Zinoviev's initial SAT recordings, and he responded to these as he manipulated the SAT recordings, so the music and words grew out of the same SAT source. SAT SAT 'Horse' is a poem of many voices - performed by two. Actor SAT Steve Hawksby shadows the leading voice of Katrina Porteous. SAT There are echoes and chants, electronic and spoken, derived SAT from Northumbrian dialect words associated with farming and SAT metal-working. These suggest an older language buried SAT beneath this one, which at moments emerges out of music into SAT speech then sinks back into music. SAT SAT The piece connects the horse with its chalk landscape, which SAT is itself a huge natural auditorium, with the sky and stars SAT - especially the constellation we know as the Plough, of SAT which the figure can seen as a reflection, and its Bronze SAT Age past. The site is associated with the legend of Wayland SAT the Blacksmith, who gives his name to a nearby Neolithic SAT burial cairn. 'Horse' contains the echoes and distant fires SAT of metal-working. SAT SAT Immediately beside the Uffington Horse is the hill where St SAT George is said to have slaughtered the Dragon. At sunset SAT around the time of the winter solstice, a dramatic winged SAT figure seems to emerge from the ridge of that hill, cutting SAT across the exact spot where the horse is carved. So the SAT piece evokes the metamorphosis of Horse into Dragon and the SAT ambiguity of these two figures. SAT SAT The poem also chronicles the place of horses in English SAT culture, how and why horses are still so imaginatively SAT important. SAT SAT Although the poem recalls 3,000 years of human history SAT around the horse, it places this within the much deeper SAT history of the chalk landscape, created millions of years SAT ago beneath the sea. The overall sense of 'Horse' is that SAT these massive creative processes are still at work all SAT around us, and also within us. SAT SAT Producer: Julian May. He subsequently worked SUN as a war reporter in Vietnam, Israel and Northern Ireland SUN and became a political correspondent in 1981. From 1992 to SUN 2000 he was the BBC's Chief Political Correspondent, before SUN a two-year stint at ITN as Political Editor. He has since SUN appeared on TV shows such as 'Have I Got News for You', SUN 'Countdown', QI, and the 2008 series of 'Strictly Come SUN Dancing', on which he proved very popular with the public, SUN if not with the judges. He has recently filmed documentaries SUN such as John Sergeant's Tourist Trail, and Tracks of Empire, SUN in which he explores the origins of Indian Railways. SUN SUN His music choices have a distinct political slant. They SUN begin in Vienna with Mahler's Fourth Symphony, which gives SUN rise to a discussion about the rise of European SUN anti-semitism. The tensions present in Vienna were SUN replicated in Berlin, where Lotte Lenya recorded Kurt SUN Weill's Alabama Song in 1930, three years before the Nazi SUN rise to power forced Weill and others out of Germany. John SUN Sergeant's next choice is the theme from the US musical 42nd SUN Street, which demonstrates how Americans reacted to the SUN financial crisis following the 1929 Wall Street crash. Bela SUN Bartok's introverted Sixth Quartet was written on the eve of SUN his own departure for America, where unlike Weill, he felt SUN underrated. Meanwhile, the two greatest 20th-century Russian SUN composers (Prokofiev, represented by his opera War and SUN Peace, and Shostakovich - the 8th Quartet) ended up trying SUN to appease the Soviet authorities. John Sergeant's final SUN choice is an extract from John Adams's opera 'Nixon in SUN China', covering the US President's 1972 visit to China. A huge crystal SUN palace was designed by Joseph Paxton and erected in Hyde SUN Park. Such was its popularity that, between May and October SUN 1851, six million people visited the exhibition, accounting SUN for nearly a third of the British population. SUN SUN The Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of all SUN Nations, as it was formally billed, was the collaborative SUN idea of Prince Albert and Henry Cole, who as a result of the SUN exhibition became the first Director of the South Kensington SUN Museum, now the Victoria and Albert Museum. At face value, SUN the exhibition gave the British industrialists and public an SUN unprecedented opportunity to showcase their products at the SUN same time as admiring the fine craftsmanship of SUN international guests. Prince Albert and Henry Cole, SUN however, also intended the exhibition to encourage British SUN manufacturers to elevate beauty in their own work. SUN SUN This edition of Words and Music celebrates the Great SUN Exhibition by taking a tour through some of its rooms and SUN reflecting on the exhibits shown. The exhibition was vast SUN and Robert Hunt wrote a Companion to the Official Catalogue, SUN which is a colourful synopsis of the highlights in each SUN room. SUN SUN Extracts from Hunt’s synopsis provide the backbone of this SUN programme and take us from the entrance hall with its SUN impressive glass fountain, through the rooms containing SUN ponderous locomotive engines and products from Ceylon, then SUN past the Grand Organ in the Gallery West End and an SUN important scientific arrangement in the Central South SUN Gallery, to an exhibition of animals from the Indian Jungle, SUN and finally to exhibits from Turkey and China. Each reading SUN from Hunt’s Companion is set against recordings from SUN different rooms in the Victoria and Albert Museum so as to SUN enhance the impression of walking through the exhibition. SUN SUN The other texts in the programme are reflections on each of SUN the exhibition rooms visited through Hunt’s Companion. SUN Morley’s Hard by a Crystal Fountain leads into Herrick’s ‘To SUN the Water Nymphs, Drinking at the Fountain’. Then Chopin’s SUN Impromptu in A-flat major, Op.29 No.1 begins like the SUN sparkling spray of a crystal fountain and, in its serene SUN central section, matches Sara Teasdale’s meditative ‘Crystal SUN Gazer’. Similarly, William Carlos Williams’ ‘Overture to a SUN Dance of Locomotives’ is set against Antheil’s driving SUN Ballet pour instruments mecanique et percussion and SUN beautifully conjures up the giant locomotive engines that SUN adorned the Central Avenue of the crystal palace. Turkey, SUN as one of the many countries displaying products at the SUN exhibition, is represented by the gold and silks of Samuel SUN Johnson’s ‘To Miss –‘ set against Bartok’s In Oriental Style SUN from Mikrokosmos Book 2, and Paul Durcan’s dark poem, ‘The SUN Turkish Carpet’ which overlaps with Dowland’s Forlorn Hope SUN Fancy for solo lute. SUN SUN There are recurrent fanfares throughout the programme - by SUN Benjamin, Bliss, Tippett and Elgar - which are linked to SUN Victorian poems about the Great Exhibition and conjure up SUN the festive excitement of the event. SUN SUN Humayun hears stories reaching back to 1887 of eccentric SUN Victorian travellers, with a passion for the language, art SUN and architecture of Islam; of devotional visitors from SUN Africa seeking a place of worship; of immigrants from the SUN sub-continent yearning for the domes and minarets of home, SUN and Arab wealth willing to supply the demand for patronage. SUN SUN He also debates the controversy over mosque building - often SUN seen as too 'exotic', too large, too tall or just too SUN foreign. Should mosques fit in with the vernacular or SUN reflect something of Islam's Middle-eastern roots? Professor SUN Ansari talks to mosque architect Shahed Saleem about his SUN proposed new mosque in the East End of London - not a dome SUN or minaret in sight. SUN SUN Despite the debate around purpose-built super mosques, the SUN majority of mosques in the UK are converted buildings - but SUN some are controversial all the same. Humayun meets up with SUN Dan Cruickshank in Spitalfields, London, to discuss the SUN conversion of a Huguenot chapel, also formerly a synagogue, SUN into a mosque. And he looks into the case of the much SUN disputed Camberley Mosque - once a Victorian school. SUN SUN Wandering the rose gardens of the UK's very first SUN purpose-built mosque, built in 1889 - just off the commuter SUN line in Woking, Surrey - Professor Humayun Ansari poses the SUN question: what makes a mosque a mosque? TUE This week the Afternoon on 3 series reaches the twentieth TUE century and find the Symphony flourishing far from its TUE Austro-German foundations. Today's programme begins with a TUE live concert from BBC Hoddinott Hall, Cardiff: Pascal Rophé TUE conducts the BBC National Orchestra of Wales in music by two TUE of the greatest symphonists of the century, from Finland and TUE Russia: Sibelius and Shostakovich - including both TUE Sibelius's famous Valse triste and his last surviving TUE Symphony, the Seventh, in which he quotes the Valse triste. TUE Sibelius may have completed an Eighth Symphony, but if he TUE did, he seems to have destroyed it. The TUE earliest of the music performed today, the second of TUE Handel's Suites, is a sparkling and radiant opener to the TUE concert. Such was his talent that Handel, the legendary TUE keyboard player, may even have written down the suite after TUE first improvising it in public. TUE TUE Another Handel keyboard suite and baroque forms generally TUE provided the inspiration for Brahms's superb masterpiece, TUE the Handel Variations. He was just 28 when he composed the TUE work and dedicated it to Robert Schumann's widow, Clara, TUE whom Brahms loved all his life. TUE TUE As a teenager, Liszt wanted to enter the priesthood, an TUE obvious expression of his deep religious feeling. First his TUE father blocked his attempt to enter the church and later his TUE confessor also dissuaded him. Liszt found a spiritual TUE channel for his faith by embarking on a hugely successful TUE career as a virtuoso pianist and composer. If evidence were TUE needed of Liszt's devotion to God it certainly can be found TUE in his Benediction de Dieu dans la solitude, a soaring, TUE ecstatic religious meditation. TUE TUE Alexander Scriabin straddled the late-romantic world of TUE Liszt and Chopin and was influenced by both. However, he TUE developed his own very distinct style of piano writing, a TUE somewhat modernist and very Russian sonority paving the way TUE for other great Russian composers of the twentieth century. TUE TUE The American pianist GARRICK OHLSSON, winner of the 1970 TUE Chopin International Piano Competition, has established TUE himself as a international concert pianist with a massive TUE repertoire including some 80 concertos.
