SAT SAT Einstein on the Beach SAT SAT In 1976 Philip Glass’s Einstein on the Beach broke all of SAT the rules of conventional opera. Non-narrative in form, it SAT used a series of powerful recurrent images as its main SAT storytelling device shown in juxtaposition with abstract SAT dance sequences. Instead of a traditional orchestral SAT arrangement, Glass chose to compose the work for the SAT synthesisers, woodwinds and voices of the Philip Glass SAT Ensemble. As the work receives its first UK performances at SAT the Barbican Theatre Tom Service talks to Glass, the SAT director Robert Wilson and choreographer Lucinda Childs SAT about their thoughts on the piece three and a half decades SAT after they originally conceived it. SAT SAT Lothar Koenigs – Music Director of WNO SAT SAT Lothar Koenigs became Music Director of Welsh National Opera SAT three years ago, and has had some stellar successes, notably SAT with Berg's Wozzeck and Wagner's Die Meistersingers, a new SAT production which starred Bryn Terfel and was reprised at the SAT Proms. Koenigs outlines to Tom his vision of what WNO and SAT its orchestra needs to be in the future, his working SAT relationship with WNO's new Chief Executive and Artistic SAT Director, David Pountney - and how his Welsh is coming SAT along! SAT SAT The Importance of Being Earnest SAT SAT The Irish composer Gerald Barry’s operatic setting of Oscar SAT Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest was garnered with SAT great praise at its premiere in Los Angeles last year. It SAT was described by the critics as zany, hysterical and SAT sophisticated. The work is now receiving its first European SAT performances by Thomas Adès and the Birmingham Contemporary SAT Music Group at the Barbican Hall, London and Birmingham SAT Symphony Hall. Tom meets the opera’s composer and two of SAT the singers taking part – Barbara Hannigan who sings Cecily SAT Cardew and Alan Ewing who plays Lady Bracknell. SAT SAT The Trumpet SAT SAT In the new book The Trumpet the authors John Wallace and SAT Alexander McGrattan trace the surprising evolution and SAT colourful performance history of one of the world’s oldest SAT instruments. They chart the introduction of the trumpet and SAT its family into art music, its rise to prominence as a solo SAT instrument from the Baroque “golden age” through the advent SAT of valved instruments to the trumpet’s renaissance in the SAT jazz age. Tom discusses this history with the authors whose SAT lifetimes of experience in performing and teaching SAT contribute so much to the book. SAT SAT 13:00 The Early Music Show b01gd6k5 (Listen) SAT Piffaro SAT SAT Lucie Skeaping presents a profile of the Renaissance wind SAT ensemble Piffaro, based in Philadelphia. This wonderfully SAT colourful, virtuosic ensemble have been together for over 25 SAT years. During the programme Lucie talks to the two artistic SAT directors, Joan Kimball and Robert Wiemken about their work. SAT The music in the programme is from the ensemble's many SAT recordings, using a wide variety of instruments and SAT repertoire, and includes arrangements of French chansons and SAT Flemish dances, and music inspired by the ensemble's recent SAT trip to Bolivia. In this, SAT the second programme, he offers a selection of recordings SAT that reflect the story of his priceless violin - the SAT wonderful 1742 Guarneri del Gesu, known as the "Ex- SAT Lipiński". SAT SAT The violin was once owned by the 19th century virtuoso Karol SAT Józef Lipiński, a rival to the great Paganini. He was a SAT friend of Schumann and Liszt, and Schumann dedicated his SAT virtuosic set of piano character pieces, "Carnival", to SAT Lipiński. After Lipiński, the violin arrived in the hands of SAT the late 19th Century's richest Russian, Nikolay Yusupov, SAT one of the country's most celebrated artistic benefactors SAT and a close friend of Pushkin, and from there to a founder SAT member of the Joachim String Quartet, who gave Johannes SAT Brahms some of his first performances. Also in the list is SAT the man who is best remembered today for arranging and SAT naming a celebrated orchestral movement from Bach, "Air on a SAT G String". He was the violinist August Wilhelmj. SUN SUN The idea of mathematics as an expression of perfection SUN unfolds during the programme through pieces such as Bartok's SUN Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta - based on the SUN Fibonacci sequence - and Purcell's Golden Sonata. They SUN represent a metaphysical notion of perfection and of unity. SUN SUN Ted Hughes’s translation of Ovid’s verse poem Venus and SUN Adonis (and Atalanta) narrates the birth of Adonis, the god SUN of beauty. Often considered the ultimate expression of human SUN perfection, physical beauty can inspire complex and SUN multitudinous feelings of desire, love, fear - or for Venus, SUN the goddess of love herself, when she sees Adonis, awe. SUN SUN With advances in medicine and bio-technology, physical SUN perfection has become something that we can construct SUN ourselves. Taking power from the gods, we become creator. SUN I’ve used the score from the 1997 film Gattaca - which SUN offers a meditation on the idea of genetic perfection - to SUN hint at this. SUN SUN As the pioneers traversed the scorched earth of the West, SUN their hopes were for a new beginning, for the discovery of SUN new lands to settle. Their chapter is just one in SUN humankind’s long history of search for the promised land - SUN for Utopia. Szymborska's poem of that name explores how this SUN imagined place may be: an island, in the Polish Nobel SUN Laureate’s poem, where ‘all becomes clear’, and where SUN ‘Meaning lies’. Cunningly, Szymborska explains that ‘For all SUN its charms, the island is uninhabited’ - perhaps suggesting SUN that our search for utopia can only ever fail. Goethe’s SUN hero in The Sorrows of Young Werther has a similar epiphany, SUN which Brahms beautifully articulates in his C-Minor Piano SUN Quartet. SUN SUN Menna Elfyn, the passionate Welsh language poet, offers us SUN some consolation for the disappointment when our quest fails SUN and perfection eludes us: ‘imperfection / is simple, SUN stable’. Losing one's mind is a negative, SUN terrifying experience, freeing it can be nerve-wracking too, SUN but also exhilarating, beautiful and eloquent - for SUN everyone. SUN SUN Many artists' creation has been defined as a kind of SUN obsessive disorder, a compulsion they can barely control. SUN So, after being diagnosed with tuberculosis, Chekhov chose SUN to continue work rather than seek treatment. Acutely tuned SUN senses, restlessness, intensity of focus, reduced SUN inhibition, depression, a sense of the visionary and SUN heightened imaginative powers are all hallmarks of both the SUN creative and mentally ill individual - a number of recent SUN studies support this link. And yet decades of studies have SUN also questioned conventional definitions of madness, SUN treatments of the "insane" and the long-term effects of SUN "normal" behaviour. SUN SUN Van Gogh or Virginia Woolf could not work when they were SUN experiencing a psychotic episode; Sylvia Plath was probably SUN pushed to the brink by wrongly prescribed medication - she SUN too could not write during extreme states of depression..
