SAT       in Turkey, and it's a city where you can find every type of
SAT       Turkish traditional music represented. It's also a
SAT       cross-roads between Europe and Asia, East and West. In
SAT       World Routes in Istanbul, Moshe Morad explores this rich
SAT       mix and records sessions with many of Turkey's top
SAT       musicians - from the country's most famous Kurdish voice
SAT       (Aynur), and the sublime guitar playing of Erkan Ogur, to
SAT       the wonderful sound of oud and kamanche with Yurdal Tokcan
SAT       and Derya Turkan. Moshe learns about some of Turkey's
SAT       best-loved traditional instruments such as the kamanche and
SAT       the saz, hears the stories behind the music, and finds out
SAT       from the people who live there what Istanbul means to them.

SAT       auf Naxos' is to be performed, followed by an Italian
SAT       comedy, but it is announced that both plays will have to be

SAT       island of Naxos by Theseus. She longs for death, but
SAT       Zerbinetta tries to persuade her to replace her love for
SAT       Theseus with another, as it is only human to change an old

SUN       Napoleon, but when Napoleon had himself crowned Emperor in
SUN       1804, Beethoven angrily scratched out this dedication and
SUN       the symphony was then titled the 'Heroic' symphony. Stephen
SUN       Johnson considers this theme of 'heroism' in the work,
SUN       illustrated with examples and a complete performance of the
SUN       symphony by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales conducted

SUN       begun to change as war and play converge to create what
SUN       some call the 'military entertainment complex'. Ken
SUN       Hollings pushes the button on this latest phenomenon.

SUN       Men have always played at and with soldiers. Gaming has been
SUN       an essential part of warfare and by the 19th Century it had
SUN       been developed into the sophisticated Kriegspiel, derived
SUN       from the still influential theories of Von Clausewitz and
SUN       played at military colleges in both Europe and America.
SUN       These war games then became real games for table-top
SUN       strategists by the early 20th Century. A remarkable synergy
SUN       developed between colleges of war and devisers of such
SUN       games, particularly in America. And in the think tanks of
SUN       the RAND Corp gaming theory was used intensively to plot
SUN       the future of war and nuclear destruction.

SUN       But from the late 1970s computer strategy games started to
SUN       form a powerful loop between gamers and warriors. With the
SUN       creation of the SIMNET, the military began to develop
SUN       hugely powerful simulators and now convergence is taking
SUN       place between military and the entertainment industry. Some
SUN       say we are living in what Stanford Professor Tim Lenoir has
SUN       called 'the military entertainment complex', with military
SUN       functions increasingly taking place online, using
SUN       simulation for training and in the treatment of soldiers
SUN       suffering from post traumatic stress disorder. But is this
SUN       new realm of war truly a revolution - the shape of things
SUN       to come - or just more virtual bangs for real bucks?

SUN       such strong emotions in humans, but because they are often
SUN       musicians themselves. Josquin’s El grillo e buon cantore

SUN       Schubert’s Der Einsame (The Lonely) concerns the melancholy
SUN       of a cricket, sitting on a hearth, mourning the
SUN       disappearance of the summer.

SUN       The image of butterflies floating across the air is captured
SUN       by Schumann’s Les Papillons, and The Flight of the
SUN       Bumblebee follows the erratic path of a charging pollen
SUN       gatherer. However, insects can also cause us intense
SUN       discomfort, reflected in Simpson’s String Quartet No 8,
SUN       which is about the movements of a mosquito and was written
SUN       for an entomologist, and From The Diary of a Fly by Bela
SUN       Bartok. DH Lawrence’s poem Mosquito and Robert Burn’s To A
SUN       Louse demonstrate just how irritating yet compelling pests

SUN       invertebrate world, we depend on the honeybee for one of
SUN       the most delicious foods. She appears at the end of the
SUN       programme, with Virgil’s ancient appreciation of the

SUN       international Saxophonist, educator, composer and arranger
SUN       Jerry Bergonzi, who has a CV that boasts just about every
SUN       jazz icon there is. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Bergonzi
SUN       became interested in music early on. He started playing
SUN       clarinet when he was eight years old listening to Duke
SUN       Ellington, Count Basie, and Lester Young. His uncle, who
SUN       was a jazz musician and lived upstairs, used to write out
SUN       solos for him to play. At twelve years old he got his first
SUN       saxophone, an old Conn alto, and a year later when a friend
SUN       introduced him to Miles, Coltrane, and Sonny Rollins, there
SUN       was no turning back.
SUN       
SUN       On this set, at the Jazz Bar in Edinburgh, he is with with
SUN       Boston bassist Dave Santoro, and Paris-based, Italian
SUN       drummer Andrea Michelutti. However Bergonzi during this set
SUN       doubles on piano during the drum breaks. Jerry has written
SUN       countless books on sax technique and improvisation, and has
SUN       a huge discography. The late, great Michael Brecker was
SUN       once asked 'What does it feel like to be the world's
SUN       greatest sax player?', to which he replied 'I don't know,
SUN       you'll have to ask Jerry Bergonzi!' Brecker was a long-term
SUN       student of 'The Gonz'.

MON       careened into his eighth and final decade with an almost
MON       rock star-like abandon: sleepwalking through his own
MON       personal erotic fantasy as his personal life crashed
MON       catastrophically around him. His was in love: infatuated to
MON       the point of madness with a woman nearly four decades
MON       younger, the very much married Mrs Kamila Stösslová.
MON       
MON       Meanwhile, as his long-suffering wife endured almost
MON       unbearable torrents of gossip, insults and casual misogyny
MON       (can you believe I wrote this piece with such a stupid
MON       wife!, he quipped to a group of admirers one evening), the
MON       composer almost blithely tossed off a series of
MON       career-defining masterpieces - all written at breathtaking,
MON       almost breakneck speed.
MON       
MON       This week, Donald Macleod explores the brilliant,
MON       tempestuous last five years of classical music's
MON       'anti-prodigy' - the seventysomething whose obsessive love
MON       inspired him to create some of the finest works of the 20th
MON       century. We'll hear a near-comprehensive list of Janacek's
MON       final works: from the astonishing Sinfonietta and
MON       Glagolitic Mass, written just months apart, to extended
MON       excerpts from Janacek's last great trio of operas: The
MON       Cunning Little Vixen, The Makropoulos Affair and From
MON       The House Of The Dead.

MON       musical firsts featuring the BBC National Orchestra of

MON       Penny opens with a concert given last month at BBC Hoddinott
MON       Hall in Cardiff, home of the BBC National Orchestra of
MON       Wales, the first of a season looking back on past premieres
MON       and BBC commissions. Principal Guest conductor Jac van
MON       Steen conducts two orchestral masterpieces from twentieth
MON       century Russia, and David Matthews joins Penny live in the
MON       studio to introduce his cello concerto, Concerto in
MON       Azzurro. It was premiered by this orchestra in 2002, and
MON       here receives its first performance in Wales, with the
MON       exciting young soloist Guy Johnston, himself a past BBC
MON       Young Musician of the Year.

MON       David also talks to Penny about his 6th symphony, heard here
MON       for the first time in a brand new recording. The symphony
MON       was premiered at the Proms in 2007 to great critical
MON       acclaim, and takes its theme from Vaughan Williams hymn
MON       tune Down Ampney - often sung to the words Come down, O
MON       love divine. The same hymn tune also underpins a new work
MON       from Australian composer Paul Stanhope, which received its
MON       UK premiere with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales at the
MON       Vale of Glamorgan Festival in 2009. These two works from

MON       performance of Vaughan Williams own Fantasia on a theme by

MON       something quite separate from 'life' and the meaning of
MON       both is self-evident. How have we arrived at such a way of
MON       thinking? It's hard to find answers because, while there is
MON       endless newspaper coverage of the issue, no history of the
MON       work/life balance exists. Especially for The Essay,
MON       Professor Hugh Cunningham explores the place that work has
MON       played in British lives from proto-industrialism in the
MON       C18th to post-industrialism in the C21st through five vivid
MON       chronological snapshots. Each tells the story of a
MON       particular period while shedding new light on a
MON       contemporary juggling act that causes great stress to many
MON       if not most people in our society

MON       Throughout the series Hugh Cunningham returns to two themes:
MON       the impact of contemporary consumerism on our working lives
MON       and the difference between the work/leisure balance of the

TUE       musical firsts featuring the BBC National Orchestra of

TUE       A quartet of works all influenced by the sea opens today's
TUE       programme. Sneaker Wave was written for the 2004 Proms by
TUE       Joby Talbot, who is also a distinguished writer of film and
TUE       TV scores, as well as arranging for pop musicians from Ute
TUE       Lemper to Tom Jones. Joby brings the full force of the
TUE       orchestra crashing down to portray this massive wall of
TUE       water, including, in this performance, the mighty Albert
TUE       Hall organ.

TUE       Welsh composer Grace Williams made her home on the coast,
TUE       just outside Cardiff, overlooking the Bristol Channel. Her
TUE       evocative Sea Sketches were premiered in 1947 at the BBC
TUE       studios in Cardiff, and have become a familiar favourite of
TUE       Welsh orchestral music ever since.

TUE       Michael Berkeley first heard the haunting sound of whales
TUE       singing as they bubble net as part of a Radio 4 programme
TUE       World on the Move. This unique song moved him to
TUE       incorporate a recording in his recent commission for BBC
TUE       NOW - Gabriel's Lament. Today Penny also hears from the
TUE       producer, Joe Stevens, about this remarkable underwater
TUE       vocal talent.

TUE       Julian Philips wrote his seascape for the orchestra a decade
TUE       ago, and it was soon championed by the BBC National

TUE       Enigma Variations, is a brilliantly varied portrait
TUE       gallery of Elgar's friends, family and neighbours. They
TUE       contain some of the most charming and deeply felt music
TUE       Elgar ever penned, though the theme itself remains an
TUE       enigma.
TUE       Barber's gloriously lyrical violin concerto is frequently
TUE       cited as a sort of turning point in Barber's output, a work
TUE       whose first two movements reflect the ingratiating
TUE       melodic-romantic style of his earlier compositions, and
TUE       whose finale represents the first intimations of a new and
TUE       tightened approach - leaner and somewhat more austere.
TUE       From the beginning, Brahms' Third Symphony has proven to be
TUE       his most evocative. With numerous acknowledgments to Wagner
TUE       and allusions to the same Rhine-based mythology, it
TUE       provides other fascinations as well, including a Minuet
TUE       that is more funereal than dance-like, and a quietly
TUE       mysterious theme heard all too briefly in the second
TUE       movement, which returns in the finale to assumes
TUE       unexpectedly heroic dimensions.

TUE       both is self-evident. How have we arrived at such a way of
TUE       thinking? It's hard to find answers because, while there is
TUE       endless newspaper coverage of the issue, no history of the
TUE       work/life balance exists. Especially for The Essay,
TUE       Professor Hugh Cunningham explores the place that work has
TUE       played in British lives from proto-industrialism in the
TUE       C18th to post-industrialism in the C21st through five vivid
TUE       chronological snapshots. Each tells the story of a
TUE       particular period while shedding new light on a
TUE       contemporary juggling act that causes great stress to many
TUE       if not most people in our society

WED       connections: Janacek's Taras Bulba is a rhapsodic evocation
WED       of episodes from Gogol's novel about the adventurous life
WED       of a Cossack.
WED       Josef Suk's massive Asrael Symphony has a tragic backstory.
WED       Suk was a protégé of Dvorak, and when the celebrated older
WED       composer died in 1904 Suk, was shaken to the core. His
WED       immediate response was creative: he wrote three movements
WED       of a symphony, producing long, Dvorákian, lyrical themes
WED       intensified by his own yearning chromatic harmonies. But a
WED       year later, Asrael, the 'Angel of Death' visited Suk once
WED       more: it took his wife, Otylka. Suk was distraught. But he
WED       pushed on. He fashioned two final movements as a memorial
WED       to her; after a furious scherzo the yearning had turned to
WED       resolution as Suk found comfort in the transcendental and
WED       uplifting renewal of the natural world.

WED       Balkwill, about her work to understand a disease that
WED       affects one third of Britons. Professor Balkwill runs a
WED       research team of 25 scientists, sits on parliament's cancer
WED       committee, directs public centres of the understanding of
WED       cells and is a resident researcher in St Bart's Hospital,
WED       London. But as someone who operates at the front line of
WED       the fight against cancer are the military metaphors we
WED       habitually use appropriate when one is trying to save the
WED       body from its own cells. Indeed, the public understanding
WED       of disease and of science more generally is high on her
WED       list of priorities. She has published a number of books

THU       Sullivan's 'Ivanhoe' - arguably the most important British
THU       opera from the nineteenth century.  Based on the novel by

THU       at her suggestion - Ivanhoe opened at the Royal English
THU       Opera House in January 1891 and ran for 155 consecutive
THU       performances.  Since when its popularity has been somewhat
THU       less extravagant.   When the performing materials were
THU       destroyed by fire in 1964, its fate seemed sealed.

THU       Thanks largely to the indefatigable effort and boundless
THU       energy of the late Richard Hickox, a new recording has now

FRI       We talk now of a 'work/life balance', as though 'work' is
FRI       something quite separate from 'life' and the meaning of
FRI       both is self-evident. How have we arrived at such a way of
FRI       thinking? It's hard to find answers because, while there is
FRI       endless newspaper coverage of the issue, no history of the
FRI       work/life balance exists. Especially for The Essay,
FRI       Professor Hugh Cunningham explores the place that work has
FRI       played in British lives from proto-industrialism in the
FRI       C18th to post-industrialism in the C21st through five vivid
FRI       chronological snapshots. Each tells the story of a
FRI       particular period while shedding new light on a
FRI       contemporary juggling act that causes great stress to many,
FRI       if not most, people in our society.

FRI       Throughout the series Hugh Cunningham returns to two themes:
FRI       the impact of contemporary consumerism on our working lives
FRI       and the difference between the work/leisure balance of the
FRI       past - when the work-force was mainly male- and the

FRI       Drever, Karine Polwart and others. In his 60th year, after
FRI       a colourful career which included years in the army and
FRI       working as a clown, maybe it is time for Sandy to get the
FRI       recognition many think he deserves.

FRI       established singers in their own right, coming together
FRI       occasionally as The Bevvy Sisters, singing tight,
FRI       three-part harmony songs from the days of the Andrews

FRI       debut album was released at the end of January.
