SAT We hear about Messiaen’s influence in Boulez’s early life SAT and how African and Asian music changed his perception of SAT time in the mid-1940s; how he took up the baton, why he SAT can’t relate to the music of Shostakovich and Britten and SAT why conducting Mahler needs more than just sentimentality. As a composer, conductor, SAT thinker and cultural leader he has interrogated multiple SAT pathways and possibilities in music, and asked the big SAT questions. His relationship with the BBC Symphony Orchestra SAT began in the 1960s, blossomed during his years as Chief SAT Conductor, and went on to sharpen and invigorate the whole SAT British music scene. SAT SAT Pli selon pli, literally translated as 'fold by fold', is SAT widely regarded as Boulez's seminal masterwork. His SAT distinctive sound world is inspired here by the work of SAT French poet Stéphane Mallarmé. As the five movements SAT develop, Boulez reveals his portrait of Mallarmé. Each SAT setting uses intriguing and different instrumental forces. SAT The BBC Symphony Orchestra is joined by celebrated soprano SAT Yeree Suh. SAT SAT Boulez's 12 Notations for solo piano were composed in 1945, SAT and in the 1970s and 80s he revisited the set - SAT orchestrating five of them. Born in Brooklyn in 1925, he was first struck by SUN the power of dance whilst on leave from serving in France SUN during the Second World War, when he was taken to see a SUN ballet at Sadler's Wells. Back in New York in 1946, a single SUN modern dance class at the Martha Graham studio convinced him SUN of his vocation. He worked with Graham for almost two SUN decades before moving to London in the late sixties, to SUN found what became the London Contemporary Dance Theatre. SUN Cohan defined the style of British contemporary dance with SUN his breadth of vision, challenging physical style and SUN inspirational teaching. And virtually all the major figures SUN in 20th-century choreography have been influenced by Cohan - SUN Siobhan Davies and Richard Alston to name just two. SUN SUN Ahead of his 90th birthday celebrations at The Place, Robert SUN Cohan talks to Michael Berkeley about the music that's SUN inspired him during his extraordinary career. He movingly SUN recalls his time on active duty in France, including the SUN time when a can of ham and eggs saved his life by deflecting SUN shrapnel. He reveals the sometimes tempestuous reality of SUN working with Martha Graham, and shares his plans for his SUN tenth decade in dance. SUN SUN He shares his love for Elgar, Vivaldi and Prokofiev, but SUN also celebrates the music of less well known composers Barry SUN Guy, Alan Hovhaness, Jon Keliehor, and Eleanor Alberga. SUN SUN In this two-part series, Bettany Hughes travels to the SUN Caucasus, the land that sits on the boundary of Asia and SUN Europe, between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, to SUN unravel its mythologised and pivotal place in Western SUN history. For the Ancient Greeks, the region was home to the SUN Golden Fleece, the Amazons and Prometheus. In the Christian SUN tradition it was thought to be the resting place of Noah's SUN Ark after the flood. In Russian literature it was SUN mythologised by Pushkin, Lermontov and Tolstoy. And in the SUN Europe of the Enlightenment, it crucially became known as SUN the home of the purest members of the white race - hence SUN today's descriptions of white criminal suspects as SUN "Caucasian". THU THU 13:00 Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert b05mrlzj (Listen) THU Haydn Plus One, Episode 3 THU THU Haydn Plus One. The four-part series of music by Haydn THU linked to that of other composers continues with the THU Endellion Quartet playing Haydn's String Quartet in F minor, THU Op 20 No 5 and Shostakovich's Quartet No 3. Recorded at LSO THU St Lukes in London THU THU Haydn: String Quartet in F minor, Op 20 No 5 THU Shostakovich: String Quartet No 3 in A THU THU Endellion Quartet THU THU Haydn's reputation as a 'composer's composer' may not do THU full justice to his music's warming mixture of ingenuity, THU humanity and sheer attractiveness, but it accurately THU reflects the esteem in which he has always been held by his THU contemporaries and successors. This concert is the third in THU a series of four recorded at LSO St Lukes in London, in THU which compositions by him in genres in which he was a THU seminal figure are placed alongside works by later composers THU who also held those genres dear. Of these, it is surely the THU string quartet that Haydn is most closely identified; one of THU his earlier examples is paired here with a work from one of THU the 20th century's most important quartet-cycles, THU Shostakovich's Third. THU THU They are played by the Endellion Quartet. THU THU 14:00 Afternoon on 3 b05mrm2n (Listen) THU Penny Gore presents this week's opera matinee, THU Rimsky-Korsakov's thrilling 4-act melodrama The Tsar's THU Bride, recorded live at La Scala last March. THU THU The libretto, by Ilyaa Tyumenev, is a complex, psychological THU drama, steeped in history and driven by one of the same THU characters that inspired Eisenstein: Tsar Ivan IV, "Ivan the THU Terrible." It's 1571 and the Tsar is looking for his third THU bride. He's assembled some 2000 girls for inspection, but THU the one he's taken with is Marfa. However, she is already THU promised in marriage to her childhood sweetheart Ivan and, THU as if the situation isn't complicated enough, Marfa is also THU loved by another powerful man, Grigory - one of the Tsar's THU secret police. It's a love-triangle which has all the THU makings of catastrophe. THU THU Rimsky-Korsakov brings the story to life with spectacular THU music, including lively melodies evoking Russian folklore THU which lighten the mood. THU THU Daniel Barenboim conducts the company premiere of this THU opera, staged and directed by Dmitri Tcherniakov, and with THU Berlin's Staatsoper Unter den Linden. The cast includes THU soprano Olga Peretyatko as Marfa, baritone Johannes Martin THU Kränzle as the ruthless oprichnik Griaznoy and mezzo-soprano THU Marina Prudenskaya as Marfa's tragic rival, Lyubasha. THU Bold brassiness takes us through the rest of the programme THU with Shostakovich's brilliant fanfare and Tchaikovsky's THU turbulent 4th Symphony, a mirror of his emotional strife at THU the time, with blood-curdling brass instruments ominously THU sounding the theme of Fate.
