Music Matters goes Turkish today. Petroc Trelawny reportsSAT

SAT
Music Matters in IstanbulSAT
SAT
This week Petroc Trelawny reports from Turkey’s largest citySAT
at the start of its year as one of three European CapitalsSAT
of Culture, alongside Essen in Germany and Pécs in Hungary.SAT
Throughout the programme, Petroc is joined by localSAT
journalist Serhan Bali to explore the state of Istanbul’sSAT
classical music scene.SAT
SAT
Petroc talks to those involved in this year’s events; toSAT
conductor Cem Mansur and businessman Faruk Pekin, who bothSAT
resigned from committee positions amidst criticisms aboutSAT
the organisation, and to Yilmaz Kurt, current SecretarySAT
General of Istanbul 2010.SAT
SAT
Symphony OrchestrasSAT
SAT
Petroc discovers that the model of state funding forSAT
orchestras is being challenged by new, privately fundedSAT
ensembles such as the Borusan Philharmonic – Petroc talksSAT
to its director Ahmet Erenli – and the Akbank ChamberSAT
Orchestra, with Cem Mansur as its music director.SAT
SAT
Petroc visits the Istanbul State Symphony Orchestra inSAT
rehearsal and talks to Turkish pianists Gülsin Onay andSAT
Hüseyin Sermet about the quality of symphonic music-makingSAT
in their home city - and distinguished virtuoso Idil BiretSAT
remembers her childhood in Istanbul, including regularSAT
visits by German pianist Wilhelm Kempff.SAT
SAT
Western Composers and Turkish MusicSAT
SAT
As a gateway between Europe and Asia, Istanbul is home to aSAT
vast range of influences – as seen in its architecture,SAT
religious diversity and also in its music. In the 18th andSAT
19th centuries, Mozart, Haydn, Gluck and Beethoven all cameSAT
under the spell of the exotic East and used TurkishSAT
military music in their own work.SAT
SAT
Petroc is joined by writer Adrian Mourby and academicSAT
Nicholas Till to discuss these Western composers’ passionSAT
for Ottoman music.SAT
SAT
Istanbul: A Centre for European MusicSAT
SAT
Conductor Cem Mansur talks to Petroc about the need to moveSAT
on from the legacy of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, founder of theSAT
present Turkish Republic, and explains the role ofSAT
classical music in Istanbul’s continued search forSAT
identity.SAT
SAT
And on a ferry crossing the Bosphorus river, which dividesSAT
the western and eastern sides of Istanbul, Serhan BaliSAT
tells Petroc about operatic life in Turkey – the stateSAT
system which supports six opera houses and has ambitionsSAT
for new producing new and innovative work.SAT

World Routes in Istanbul, Episode 1SAT
SAT
Istanbul is a European Capital of Culture for 2010 and inSAT
the first of two programmes Moshe Morad goes in search ofSAT
traditional music in this melting-pot of peoples andSAT
cultures. Including a live session at Badehane's bar withSAT
gypsy clarinettist Selim Sesler, troubadour songs recordedSAT
in one of the city's oldest hamams, and a rare recording ofSAT
an Alevi ceremony. A minority branch of Shia Islam, theSAT
Alevis controversially believe in equality between men andSAT
women, and meet once a week for music and mass-wailing.SAT
Producer James Parkin. 1/2SAT
SAT
Istanbul is a rich and diverse meeting point for musiciansSAT
in Turkey, and it's a city where you can find every type ofSAT
Turkish traditional music represented. It's also aSAT
cross-roads between Europe and Asia, East and West. InSAT
World Routes in Istanbul, Moshe Morad explores this richSAT
mix and records sessions with many of Turkey's topSAT
musicians - from one of the best clarinettists in the worldSAT
(Selim Sesler), to the country's most famous Kurdish voiceSAT
(Aynur), and the sublime guitar playing of Erkan Ogur. TheSAT
music and the city are brought to life in a number ofSAT
atmospheric settings such as the 15th Century bath-houseSAT
Cemberlitas, Istanbul's most iconic music venue Babylon,SAT
and the tiny bar called Badehane - in a quiet street awaySAT
from the hustle and bustle of Taksim, it's where SelimSAT
Sesler has played every Wednesday night for nearly aSAT
decade. Moshe learns about some of Turkey's best-lovedSAT
traditional instruments such as the kamanche and the saz,SAT
hears the stories behind the music, and finds out from theSAT
people who live there what Istanbul means to them. Is thisSAT
vibrant city an island in Turkey, is it in Europe or Asia,SAT
and is it secular or religious? Next week Moshe meetsSAT
Aynur, Erkan Ogur, finds the one genre of music that hasn'tSAT
emmigrated to Istanbul, and meets the record executive whoSAT
was sent to jail for his love of minority musics.SAT

Live from the Met, Donizetti's La fille du regimentSAT
SAT
In tonight's Live from the Met Diana Damrau stars as Marie,SAT
the daughter of the 21st regiment of the French army. She'sSAT
in love with Tonio, but won't marry him because he's not inSAT
the regiment, so the only option is for him to enlist.SAT
Meanwhile, Marie's long-lost mother has other plans for herSAT
romantic future.SAT
SAT
Donizetti's La Fille du Régiment combines comedy with someSAT
famously virtuosic vocal writing, including Tonio's ariaSAT
which includes no fewer than nine top C's, sung tonight bySAT
Juan Diego Flórez. And the production includes Kiri TeSAT
Kanawa in the speaking role of the Duchess of Krakenthorp.SAT

SAT
As a prelude to tonight's edition of Hear and Now, Pre-HearSAT
festures music by two composers associated with the EnglishSAT
experimentalist tradition. Michael Nyman has carved a nicheSAT
for himself with his personal take on driven minimalistSAT
textures, and the characteristic sound of his 'outdoor'SAT
band has defined his music as like no other. At the otherSAT
end of the spectrum, Laurence Crane's enigmatic miniaturesSAT
seem to float outside time, relishing sweet and astringentSAT
harmonies for their own sake.SAT

Written for London Sinfonietta, At First Light is a classicSAT
illustration of Benjamin's dazzling sonic landscapes. TheSAT
world of Turner's painting 'Norham Castle, Sunrise' isSAT
stunningly evoked through musical colours, textures andSAT
inventive harmonies.SAT
SAT
A Mind of Winter illustrates a different side to Benjamin'sSAT
musical flair, of setting voice with orchestral ensemble,SAT
as the soprano blends with the crystalline world of WallaceSAT
Stevens' poem The Snow Man. This performance of A Mind ofSAT
Winter also highlights Benjamin's skills as a distinguishedSAT
coach. The next generation of performers from the RoyalSAT
Academy of Music Manson Ensemble will take their place onSAT
stage alongside London Sinfonietta.SAT
SAT
The concert ends with the explosive orchestral Palimpsests,SAT
a gripping and dynamic work fusing violent brass againstSAT
translucent wind and strings.SAT

Marguerite of AustriaSUN
SUN
Catherine Bott presents a programme telling the unfortunateSUN
tale of Marguerite of Austria, ill-fated in love andSUN
marriage but who was a pre-eminent patron of the arts. AtSUN
the age of 2, Marguerite was betrothed to the 13-year oldSUN
dauphin of France, the future Charles VIII, and she movedSUN
to France at the age of 3 in 1483. 8 years later though sheSUN
returned home, humiliated that Charles had married Anne ofSUN
Brittany instead. In 1497 Marguerite married Juan of SpainSUN
but he died 6 months later; after a few years she marriedSUN
Philibert de Savoie but this marriage too ended with hisSUN
untimely death 3 years later. Soon afterwards MargueriteSUN
also lost her brother, Philippe de Beau, leaving 4 childrenSUN
and a mentally ill wife. Music and literature flourished atSUN
her court, as well as the visual arts, and MargueriteSUN
established a very impressive library of manuscripts andSUN
books. Poets and scholars dedicated works to her and sheSUN
also wrote poetry herself, often lamenting her misfortunes,SUN
and titles such as 'regrets' or 'complaintes' dominate herSUN
collection of chansons. Several notable composers worked atSUN
her court, in particular Pierre de la Rue, and the music inSUN
the programme includes compositions that appeared in someSUN
of her manuscripts by Ockeghem, Agricola, Josquin and de laSUN
Rue.SUN

The Romantic HornSUN
SUN
The sound of the horn took on a special significance to theSUN
Romantic composers of the early 19th century with itsSUN
suggestions of woodland magic and heroism. CharlesSUN
Hazlewood deconstructs music by Weber, Mendelssohn andSUN
Schumann with the BBC Concert Orchestra, in an explorationSUN
of an instrument which achieved iconic status and came verySUN
much into its own when conveying the spirit of earlySUN
Romanticism. Also helping Charles in his exploration areSUN
the hornists Stephen Bell and Michael Thompson.SUN
Charles looks at Weber's Overture to the opera Oberon;SUN
Mendelssohn's Nocturne from A Midsummer Night's Dream, andSUN
Schumann's formidable Konzertstuck for four horns, theSUN
latter being a piece that also exploited the RomanticSUN
fascination for virtuosity.SUN

powerful dynasties the world has known: the Ottoman EmpireSUN
in the sixteenth century. Responsible for some four hundredSUN
sublime and inventive buildings throughout Turkey, theSUN
Balkans and the Middle East he is virtually unknown in theSUN
West. Why is this?SUN
SUN
Architectural journalist Jonathan Glancey tells Sinan'sSUN
astonishing story.SUN
SUN
Born a Christian in crumbling Anatolia, Sinan converted toSUN
Islam and was taken into the Janissary Corps which foughtSUN
to extend the Ottoman Empire. He participated in theSUN
campaign for Rhodes in the 1520s, learning to build rapidlySUN
and well - catapults, mosques and caravanserais, all theSUN
structures a vast army needed. The experience would standSUN
him in good stead when he became chief architect to SultanSUN
Suleiman I soon after.SUN
SUN
Sinan's best known work is perhaps the Suleiman Mosque inSUN
Istanbul. But he also created madrassas, bathhouses andSUN
viaducts. Influenced by the Byzantine buildings thatSUN
surrounded him in Constantinople, it is also likely that heSUN
had contact with the designs of Renaissance figuresSUN
including Michelangelo, who was his contemporary. But didSUN
the artistic dialogue go both ways? Did Sinan's reputationSUN
reach into Western Europe through the strong links betweenSUN
the Ottoman Empire and Italy in particular? It's aSUN
tantalizing thought which the programme explores.SUN

Occidental as well as oriental - Turkey has often beenSUN

the country and its people have attracted admirers like theSUN
poets Yeats and John Ash as well as detractors likeSUN
T.E.Lawrence. Byron as well as Lady Wortley Montagu haveSUN

Occidental as well as oriental - Turkey has often beenSUN
disputed territory... a country of shifting borders andSUN
identities. It’s the setting for Homer’s epic account ofSUN
the Trojan War; much of Xenophon's famous expedition takesSUN
place on its soil; and over the centuries the country andSUN
its people have attracted admirers like the poets Yeats,SUN
Rumi and John Ash as well as detractors like T.E.Lawrence.SUN
SUN
Lord Byron as well as Lady Wortley Montagu have fallen underSUN
the spell of its customs and more recent visitors such asSUN
the historian, Neal Ascherson, have been both beguiled andSUN
bemused by their experience of the country. The same isSUN
true when you turn to composers and musicians.SUN
SUN
Turkey has coloured the imaginations of Mozart, Arvo PartSUN
and Cantemir and its inflections can be clearly heard inSUN
the Armenian and Sephardic tradition of folk music as wellSUN
as in the riotous playing of the Romanian ensemble, TarafSUN
de Haidouks.SUN
SUN
The actors, Ruth Wilson and Toby Jones are at the helm forSUN
this voyage to Byzantium and beyond... to a TurkeySUN
refracted through foreign eyes and ears.SUN

Bebop, Episode 1MON
MON
Bebop! It's a rather silly word for a crucial chapter inMON
jazz history. It didn't just come out of nowhere butMON
evolved, fizzed and bubbled into existence in the USA inMON
the early 1940s, as a result of a gloriously rich andMON
complex musical chemistry involving different combinationsMON
of musicians, styles and places. All week, Donald MacleodMON
and his special guest, the writer and broadcaster GeoffreyMON
Smith, have some serious fun investigating this amazingMON
musical phenomenon.MON
In Monday's programme they start by exploring the roots ofMON
Bebop in the work of a varied cast of pioneers: pianist ArtMON
Tatum, guitarist Charlie Christian, tenor sax playersMON
Lester Young and Coleman Hawkins and trumpeter RoyMON
Eldridge. Then it's off to Minton's Playhouse, theMON
after-hours Harlem club and all-purpose Bebop laboratory,MON
where some of the most innovative jazz musicians of the dayMON
let their hair down and jammed together into the smallMON
hours, gradually forging the new style through theirMON
collective experimentation. Finally, the two centralMON
figures of the Bebop revolution emerge from the crowd -MON
alto sax player Charlie 'Yardbird' Parker and trumpeterMON
Dizzy Gillespie - first separately, in earlier, pre-BopMON
incarnations, then playing together, explosively, in twoMON
early Bebop classics, 'Groovin' High' and 'Salt Peanuts'.MON

Compelling despite its largely brooding and desolateMON
character, Sibelius's Fourth Symphony opens with anMON
ice-cold 'tritone', the sound that traditionally stood forMON
ominous foreboding in western music and was regarded inMON
earlier centuries as diabolic. The monumental FifthMON
Symphony, however, is a heroic struggle towardsMON
affirmation. Glimpsing a flock of sixteen swans takingMON
flight over his Järvenpää villa, Sibelius discovered theMON
joy of life once more. He thrust the swans' soaring,MON
graceful ascent into the final movement of the Fifth.MON

As the Iraq inquiry puts UK foreign policy in the spotlightMON
Philip Dodd interviews Douglas Hurd about his own time inMON
one of the great Offices of British politics, about theMON
power he really exercised and how his experiences fitMON
within the evolution of the office from Charles James FoxMON
to David Miliband. Hurd was British Foreign secretaryMON
during turbulent times. From 1989 to 1995 he had anMON
insider's view of the end of the Cold war, the first GulfMON
War and civil war in Yugoslavia. A well respectedMON
statesmanlike presence, he cultivated relations with bothMON
America and Europe but was seen to be on the wrong side ofMON
history in his desire not to intervene during the war inMON
Bosnia. He is also the author of numerous politicalMON
thrillers and has now written a history of the office ofMON
foreign secretrary.MON
MON
When the little known Hungarian Journalist, Arthur Koestler,MON
published Darkness at Noon in 1940, his prescient andMON
savage attack on totalitarianism in Europe propelled him toMON
international fame. He lived, by any account, anMON
extraordinary life and attended many of the great momentsMON
of post war history but his character and reputation haveMON
been questioned, particulalrly over his relationship withMON
his wife. Now, a new biography claims that he is anMON
'indispensible intellectual'. Philip Dodd puts the claim toMON
the test in discussion with the author, Michael ScammellMON
and Robert Hewison.MON
MON
Film-maker Peter Jackson is famous for the fantasy andMON
grandeur of the Lord of the Rings trilogy but now he hasMON
turned his hand to more delicate and intimate fare. AliceMON
Sebold's novel The Lovely Bones told the story of aMON
murdered girl coming to terms with her own death whilstMON
looking down from heaven on her still living relatives. ItMON
was both critically praised and hugely popular. MatthewMON

Our essay series follows the writer and falconer HelenMON
Macdonald through a year of keeping a female goshawk. AsMON
well as being a diary of training a large and powerful birdMON
of bird - keeping a hawk called Mabel in a house inMON
Cambridge, walking through the streets with her on herMON
fist, and flying her after rabbits - the series of talks isMON
also a meditation on the place hawks and falcons have hadMON
in the human imagination for millennia, and particularly onMON
another falconer, another goshawk keeper and writer - theMON
novelist T.H. White best known for his series of ArthurianMON
books - The Once and Future King. White wrote anMON
extraordinary account of his goshawk experiences in theMON
1950s and Helen Macdonald's talks are a conversation withMON
this near-mad book.MON
MON
The language of falconry is rich and poetic. A mews was aMON
cage or a building where captive hawks and falcons wereMON
kept. And Helen Macdonald's talks reflect on a wealth ofMON
themes - on home and flying from it, on killing things andMON
English fascism, on what can be tamed and what cannot.MON

Bebop, Episode 2TUE
TUE
Bebop! It's a rather silly word for a crucial chapter inTUE
jazz history. It didn't just come out of nowhere butTUE
evolved, fizzed and bubbled into existence in the USA inTUE
the early 1940s, as a result of a gloriously rich andTUE
complex musical chemistry involving different combinationsTUE
of musicians, styles and places. All week, Donald MacleodTUE
and his special guest, the writer and broadcaster GeoffreyTUE
Smith, have some serious fun investigating this amazingTUE
musical phenomenon.TUE
In Tuesday's programme, they focus on the 'yin and yang' ofTUE
Bebop, Charlie Parker and the man he once referred to asTUE
'the other half of my heartbeat', Dizzy Gillespie, startingTUE
with three studio recordings - 'Dizzy Atmosphere', 'Now'sTUE
the Time' and 'Koko' - that galvanized the jazz world, bothTUE
with the freshness and inventiveness of the musicalTUE
language and the sheer virtuosity of the playing. Next weTUE
follow Parker and Gillespie on a trip to Los Angeles - anTUE
occasion notable both for the thrilling live concert theyTUE
played there and for Parker's ensuing breakdown and stay inTUE
Camarillo State Hospital, where, after years of drug abuse,TUE
he underwent six months' psychiatric treatment; it would beTUE
several years before the two men collaborated again. In theTUE
meantime, Gillespie formed a big band and made a string ofTUE
dazzlingly extrovert recordings; Parker's more reflective,TUE
introspective work from this time stands in stark contrast.TUE
Finally, we hear them together again in their last studioTUE
outing, from June 1950. Parker, always sailing close to theTUE
wind, would be dead within five years; Gillespie carried onTUE
playing Bebop for another 40, even becoming a culturalTUE
ambassador for the US State Department along the way.TUE

Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts.TUE
TUE
Stravinsky wrote his Violin Concerto in 1931; it is one ofTUE
the masterpieces of his neoclassical style, with fastTUE
toccata-like movements separating two more lyrical arias.TUE
Bartók's great Concerto for Orchestra of 1943 was a productTUE
of his exile in New York, but is imbued with the folkTUE
melodies of his native Hungary that he spent so many yearsTUE
researching. The concert opens with a celebration forTUE

From the George Bernard Shaw's St.Joan to A Tale of TwoTUE
Cities, British culture is full of depictions of theTUE
history of France. But what of the view from the otherTUE
side? As the National Gellery unveils an exhibition ofTUE
French portraits of English historical scenes, includingTUE
Paul DelaRoche's masterly The Execution of Lady Jane Grey,TUE
Matthew Sweet and guests discuss the role of Britain inTUE
French national history and the depictions of BritishTUE
culture to be found there.TUE
TUE
Matthew talks to the designer Ron Arad as he prepares forTUE
the first major exhibition of his work in the UK. A boldTUE
experimenter and master of technological innovation Arad'sTUE
work encompasses architecture, art, mass-produced items forTUE
the home and fabulously expensive one-offs. Thirty yearsTUE
ago his postpunk, Rover Chair, constructed from an old carTUE
seat and metal frame, launched him into celebrity in 198.TUE
More recently he has engaged with emerging technology: heTUE
created a chandelier made up of 1050 LED lights embeddedTUE
within 2,100 crystals and the first to have its own mobileTUE
phone number. Text messages appear at the top of theTUE
chandelier and wind down the ribbon curves, creating theTUE
impression that it is slightly spinning.TUE
TUE
Also on the program, Frances Welch reviews The Last Station,TUE
a fictionalised account of the final days of the RussianTUE
novelist, Count Leo Tolstoy, based on the book by JayTUE
Parini. The stellar cast includes Christopher Plummer,TUE
Helen Mirren, James McAvoy, Paul Giamatti, and Anne MarieTUE
Duff.TUE
TUE
The People's Republic of North Korea is the most secretiveTUE
country on earth, beholden to ideologies that the rest ofTUE
the world has forsaken. As a result the ordinary lives ofTUE
North Koreans are unknown to us but American JournalistTUE
Barbara Demick has tried to find out. She has writtenTUE
Nothing to Envy - Real Lives in North Korea which usesTUE
extensive interviews with defectors to forensically pieceTUE
together what it is like to life in the country. MatthewTUE
Sweet interviews Barbara Demick about how we engageTUE
imaginatively, emotionally and intellectually with aTUE
country that seems to be more from the pages of Orwell thanTUE
the real world.TUE

Bebop, Episode 3WED
WED
Bebop! It's a rather silly word for a crucial chapter inWED
jazz history. It didn't just come out of nowhere butWED
evolved, fizzed and bubbled into existence in the USA inWED
the early 1940s, as a result of a gloriously rich andWED
complex musical chemistry involving different combinationsWED
of musicians, styles and places. All week, Donald MacleodWED
and his special guest, the writer and broadcaster GeoffreyWED
Smith, have some serious fun investigating this amazingWED
musical phenomenon.WED
In Wednesday's programme, they visit the engine-room of jazzWED
- the rhythm section - and in particular, Bebop's two keyWED
drummers, Kenny 'Klook-Mop' Clarke and Max Roach. Clarke'sWED
innovation was to shift the drummer's time-keeping functionWED
to the ride cymbal, leaving the snare and bass drum free toWED
'drop bombs' - unexpected offbeat accents - that perfectlyWED
complemented the way that the most innovative jazzWED
musicians were beginning to play. In the event, Clarke wasWED
shipped off to Europe as part of the US contribution to theWED
war effort, and he missed Bebop's explosion onto the sceneWED
in 1945. His shoes were filled by Max Roach, a percussionWED
virtuoso who absorbed and extended Clarke's innovations.WED
Donald Macleod and Geoffrey Smith explore the contributionsWED
of both men to a stellar sequence of recordings, withWED
Charlie Christian, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, FatsWED
Navarro, Bud Powell, Thelonius Monk, Miles Davis, theWED
Modern Jazz Quartet and Clifford Brown.WED

Anne McElvoy talks to Anthony Julius about the long historyWED
of English Anti-Semitism from 1290 to the present day. HisWED
new book, Trials of the Diaspora, is the firstWED
comprehensive history of English Anti-Semitism. ItWED
catalogues the devlopment of the blood libel, the slowWED
rehabilitation of the Jews after Cromwell and theWED
persistent strain of Anti-Semitic thought in BritishWED
literary life. Controversialy, he argues that today a newWED
political anti zionism - part secular part religious - isWED
writing a new chapter in this very old story.WED
WED
The Crucible Theatre in Sheffield has emerged from aWED

Bebop, Episode 4THU
THU
Bebop! It's a rather silly word for a crucial chapter inTHU
jazz history. It didn't just come out of nowhere butTHU
evolved, fizzed and bubbled into existence in the USA inTHU
the early 1940s, as a result of a gloriously rich andTHU
complex musical chemistry involving different combinationsTHU
of musicians, styles and places. All week, Donald MacleodTHU
and his special guest, the writer and broadcaster GeoffreyTHU
Smith, have some serious fun investigating this amazingTHU
musical phenomenon.THU
Thursday's programme homes in on the 88 keys of the piano,THU
under the phenomenal fingers of Bebop's two mostTHU
influential pianists: Bud Powell and Thelonius Monk. TheTHU
classically-trained Powell had a ferociously virtuosicTHU
style of playing. His personality, though, was shy andTHU
introverted, and there was something almost helpless aboutTHU
him. He had a tendency to drink to excess, and a formidableTHU
knack for getting into trouble. In 1945 he was beatenTHU
senseless by the Philadelphia police, an attack whoseTHU
savagery left him with mental problems that dogged him forTHU
the rest of his all-too-brief life; he died in 1966, aTHU
couple of months short of his 42nd birthday. Powell andTHU
Monk met at Minton's Playhouse in Harlem, where Monk wasTHU
house pianist in the early '40s, and they remained firmTHU
friends. We hear Monk's tribute to Powell, 'In Walked Bud',THU
and Powell's reading of a Monk composition, 'Off Minor'. WeTHU
also hear their very different readings of 'Tea for Two' -THU
Powell's a wildly inventive hectic dash, like somethingTHU
from the Mad Hatter's Tea Party, Monk's much more spaciousTHU
and angular. And to finish: 'Wee' from a celebrated liveTHU
concert recording in which Powell played with CharlieTHU
Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus and Max Roach; andTHU
a Monk tune, 'Little Rootie Tootie', in a magnificentTHU
arrangement for big band.THU

THU
Lionel Shriver is a novelist of international renown, bestTHU
known for her controversial 2003 Orange prize-winningTHU
novel, We Need to Talk About Kevin, about a mother and herTHU
mass murderer son. As part of Radio 3's Free ThinkingTHU
festival of ideas presenter Anne McElvoy and an audienceTHU
from New Writing North's book clubs join Lionel at the SageTHU
Gateshead. They engage in a frank, wide ranging and livelyTHU
conversation about her 1996 novel, A Perfectly Good FamilyTHU
- the story of three siblings and a grand inheritance - andTHU
they discuss the ways in which families are portrayed inTHU
fiction. And Anne presses Lionel on a popular but contestedTHU
trend in novel writing today: writers who make sure theirTHU
own troubled family life as part of their work. Does LionelTHU
Shriver think it is ethical to do so - or can it causeTHU
lasting damage?THU

When Mariss Jansons brought his Royal Concertgebouw ofFRI
Amsterdam to London last December, Richard Morrison wroteFRI
in The Times that 'they delivered an account of Mahler'sFRI
Second Symphony that left me unable to speak for severalFRI
minutes after its stupendous finale had died away. InFRI
future I will rank Mariss Jansons's Second along withFRI
Bernstein's Fifth, Tennstedt's Sixth and Abbado's Third asFRI
the finest Mahler performances I have ever heard.' TodayFRI
Louise Fryer presents the performance of Mahler's SecondFRI
that Jansons and his orchestra gave at home in Amsterdam aFRI
week before they came to London. And we start on the southFRI
side of the Dutch-Belgian border with two more RomanticFRI
masterpieces from the Belgian National Orchestra: RichardFRI
Strauss's autumnal song cycle and another towering SecondFRI
Symphony by Czech composer Josef Suk, composing at whiteFRI
heat after the death of both his beloved teacher Dvorak,FRI
and his wife, Dvorak's daughter Otilie. And one huge fan ofFRI
Suk's work was... Gustav Mahler.FRI

Almost Like LiteratureFRI
FRI
A talk by Robert Hanks on what George Orwell called goodFRI
bad books - novels (loosely interpreted) that set out toFRI
entertain, but which one way or another do something ratherFRI
more impressive. Some books that might be mentioned:FRI
FRI
1. The Daffodil Affair by Michael Innes (1942). On theFRI
surface, The Daffodil Affair an extravagant and elaborateFRI
detective story-cum-thriller, set against the background ofFRI
the Blitz and featuring, alongside Innes's regularFRI
protagonist, the intellectual Inspector Appleby, aFRI
mathematical horse, a witch-girl, a paedophilia-obsessedFRI
policeman and a tribe of Amazonian headhunters. But InnesFRI
was also J. I. M. Stewart, author of the final volume ofFRI
the Oxford History of English Literature and a leadingFRI
authority on modernism; and under this novel's fantasticalFRI
surface is a portrait of a civilisation suffering aFRI
collective nervous breakdown, retreating from war and theFRI
threat of apocalypse into superstition - a portrait thatFRI
drew inspiration from T. S. Eliot and in its turn inspiredFRI
Graham Greene.FRI
FRI
2. Gamesmanship, Oneupmanship and Lifemanship by StephenFRI
Potter (1947-52). Most people wouldn't regard Potter'sFRI
trilogy (I do not speak of Supermanship - the GodfatherFRI
Part III of his oeuvre) as a novel at all; they take theFRI
form of a set of comic manuals on achieving sporting andFRI
social success. But the books do almost everything youFRI
demand of a sophisticated novel: there are vividly drawnFRI
characters (Gatling-Fenn, Godfrey Plaste of Plaste'sFRI
Placid Salutation, the obnoxious Odoreida); there is plotFRI
- there are far too many plots, in fact - and incident; andFRI
there is a thoroughly modern and promiscuous mingling ofFRI
the real and the fictional. Above all, there is anFRI
over-arching satirical vision - Potter is a moralist, whoFRI
detects and despises in our a society a willingness toFRI
believe that being good is only a matter of persuadingFRI
other people you are good.FRI
FRI
3. The Shield Ring by Rosemary Sutcliff (1956). It's aFRI
truism that historical novels say more about the timeFRI
they're written than the time they supposedly portray: andFRI
Rosemary Sutcliff's novels together form one of the mostFRI
vivid meditations on what it meant to be British in theFRI
years after the Second World War. Dawn Wind and The SilverFRI
Branch, set in the dying years of the Roman Empire, areFRI
about the agonies of imperial retreat, seen from the pointFRI
of view of a colonial power; The Shield Ring, about aFRI
colony of Vikings in the Lake District holding out againstFRI
the Norman yoke, sees colonialism from another angle: inFRI
the era of the Malaysian emergency, the Mau-Mau rebellionFRI
and the first stages of the Vietnam War, it is aFRI
sympathetic portrayal of asymmetric warfare. But it isFRI
also, in an age when You've never had it so good, aFRI
lament for a people exhausted by conflict, resigningFRI
themselves to a new world that promises to prove infinitelyFRI
drearier and more wearing than the old.FRI
FRI
4. Saturn's Children by Charles Stross (2008). On the oneFRI
hand, it's a fast-paced space-opera about a sex-robotFRI
zipping about a solar system denuded of human life - andFRI
what's a girl to do without the man for whom she's beenFRI
hardwired to go weak at the titanium knees? On the otherFRI
hand, it's an examination of free will and the difficultyFRI
of human existence in a universe where god is dead; it's aFRI
warning of the emptiness and hostility of the galaxy beyondFRI
our doorstep; and it's a beehive of allusions, from TheFRI
Perils of Pauline to Isaac Asimov via P. G. Wodehouse andFRI
Raymond Chandler.FRI
FRI
5. Swamp Thing, issues 21-64, by Alan Moore (1983-87). ToFRI
begin with, the Swamp Thing was a scientist, Alec Holland,FRI
transformed by radiation into a dripping green monster,FRI
part man, part vegetable, haunting the swamps of Louisiana:FRI
then along came Alan Moore, a Northampton-born writer, bestFRI
known for writing science-fiction strips in the BritishFRI
comic 2000AD, to reinvent the Swamp Thing as a spirit -FRI
often a vengeful one - of the earth. Over the next fourFRI
years, he transformed a moderately popular American horrorFRI
comic into a wildly inventive, ironic, mysticalFRI
contemplation of nature, sexuality and the necessity ofFRI
evil; and with a cast of fully-realised characters and aFRI
rhythmic, descriptive prose style, he transformed theFRI
understanding of what comics could do.FRI

Music from across the globe with Mary Ann Kennedy, and aFRI
Radio 3 debut session with the Carolina Chocolate Drops, aFRI
trio with roots in the tradition of Piedmont string bands.FRI
FRI
The band was formed in 2005 by three young African-AmericanFRI
musicians who started out by learning old American tunesFRI
and old fiddle techniques from some of the celebratedFRI
veteran players of North Carolina. America's PiedmontFRI
region is situated between the Appalachians and theFRI
Atlantic, and many freed slaves made their way there in theFRI
early years of the twentieth century. The 'Piedmont blues'FRI
was a distinctive style, influenced by ragtime and popularFRI
song, and it was made famous by the Tennessee ChcolateFRI
Drops. The Carolinas, named after the 1930s band, are anFRI
acoustic trio of Rhiannon Giddens, Justin Robinson and DomFRI
Flemons, and they are reinventing this style for theFRI
present day. Although, as 'Newsweek' recently put it, 'moreFRI
importantly they're just making great music.'.FRI
