Also in a round up of how the budgetary SAT changes will affect music making he meets musicians across SAT the country. SAT SAT A new film looking at the life of Edward Elgar is featured SAT at the Sheffield Documentary Festival at the beginning of SAT November. Its director, John Bridcut discusses how Elgar - SAT The Man Behind the Mask reveals the hidden identity of a SAT composer we think we know so well. SAT SAT And Tom meets one of the most performed composers alive - SAT Eric Whitacre. Known for his top selling albums and a brand SAT of choral music that both challenges choirs, and touches a SAT massive audience, he talks ahead of his performances SAT conducting choirs in London and Cardiff. SAT SAT Eric Whitacre SAT SAT American composer and conductor Eric Whitacre is one of the SAT most popular composers living today. In recent years his SAT work has received thousands of performances, with sheet SAT music sales of over a million copies worldwide. And in 2008 SAT his album Cloudburst was nominated for a Grammy. As he SAT prepares to create the world’s largest online ‘virtual SAT choir’, he has also just started a term as Visiting Fellow SAT and Composer in Residence at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. SAT SAT In the midst of rehearsals at the Barbican Eric talks to Tom SAT Service about his first choral experience singing Mozart’s SAT Requiem, how the Juilliard School in New York terrified him, SAT and how he writes his phenomenally successful and SAT communicative music. SAT SAT Spending Review SAT SAT One of the so called ‘losers’ in this week’s comprehensive SAT spending review was Jeremy Hunt’s Departure for Culture, SAT Media, and Sport which has to reduce its budget by 24% by SAT 2014/2015. This means significant cuts across the arts – the SAT Arts Council England faces an overall cut of 29.6% and yet SAT has to pass only 15% cuts to its regularly funded or SAT ‘frontline’ organisations. This is likely to result in the SAT withdrawal of funding from several arts advocacy and SAT development programmes. Cuts in local government funding SAT will also impact arts funding throughout the country. SAT SAT So what impact will these figures have on our musical lives? SAT Where will be hit hardest? What difference will people SAT notice in their local cultural experiences? Are there SAT opportunities as well as challenges for music and education SAT organisations? SAT SAT Tom questions Culture Minister Ed Vaizey about his SAT commitment to arts funding, and is joined by Susanna SAT Eastburn from Arts Council England, Louise de Winter of the SAT National Campaign for the Arts, and Marc Jaffrey, Director SAT of arts consultancy Think Again, to discuss the issues. SAT SAT We also hear from the Simon Funnell of the London Mozart SAT Players and Deborah Chadbourn of Music in the Round, SAT Sheffield, about how they hope to weather the storm, and ask SAT the people of Birmingham how important arts funding really SAT is. SAT SAT Elgar: The Man Behind The Mask SAT SAT With his noble bearing, stiff upper lip and imperial SAT moustache, Edward Elgar, the composer of Land of Hope and SAT Glory, is often seen as the epitome of Edwardian England. SAT But this image was deliberately contrived, and far from SAT reality. A new documentary film (on BBC4 on November 12th) SAT looks behind this image to discover the real Elgar - a SAT brilliant but neurotic musician, with a chip on his shoulder SAT about his lowly origins and his Catholic religion, who SAT despised the Establishment, yet longed to belong to it. SAT SAT Film maker John Bridcut talks to Tom about the clues left in SAT Elgar’s music and correspondence which shed light on the SAT ambiguities and contradictions at the composer’s heart. SUN SUN 21:30 Sunday Feature b00vct4d (Listen) SUN The Romans in Britain, Becoming Roman SUN SUN Historian Bettany Hughes looks at our first contacts with SUN the Romans and how people loved or resented their new SUN overlords. Our relationship with the Romans used to be a SUN cosy one - once we saw them as our fellow imperialists who SUN civilised 'us natives', and a jolly good thing too. Even now SUN that some of that 'special relationship' has persisted. We SUN love discoveries of forts and towns and baths, and we're lot SUN less impressed by a nice British round house. Yet perhaps SUN 97% of our ancestors would have been living in those SUN roundhouses, many of them turning up their noses at Roman SUN culture beyond the odd bit of bracelet or pottery. SUN SUN Where we do pay attention to the native British, it's to the SUN freedom fighters like Boudicca and Caractacus, but we rarely SUN think about ordinary life under occupation or the culture SUN shock of suddenly finding yourself living in a Roman town. SUN Roman towns would have looked as alien to our ancestors as SUN the dizzying streetscapes of Bladerunner with their tall SUN rectangular stone buildings, cacophony of languages and SUN intimidatingly foreign way of life. SUN SUN Nor do we think about the most important woman in early SUN Roman Britain, the dazzling ruler of most of Yorkshire - the SUN pro-Roman Cartimandua, queen of the Brigantes who built one SUN of our largest iron age settlements at Stanwick and who SUN caused an international incident when she ditched her SUN husband for his armour bearer. Her canny but failed SUN experiment in client state-building would set the future for SUN the whole of the North of England. She was a much bigger SUN player than Boudicca. It's up in the North that we see SUN occupation in shockingly modern terms, as those enormous SUN Roman armies set up permanent home, sucking the local areas SUN almost dry and becoming the law of the land. Up here, SUN occupation bites. SUN SUN 22:15 Words and Music b00g3vm4 (Listen) SUN Ancient Greece SUN SUN The culture and mythology of Ancient Greece have inspired a SUN wide range of writers and composers: the plays of the SUN Elizabethan dramatists William Shakespeare and Christopher SUN Marlowe; the dramas of Racine during the 17th Century; SUN Goethe; the Romantics Keats, Tennyson and Matthew Arnold; SUN and in the 20th Century Yeats, Auden and Greece’s own Cavafy. SUN SUN Cavafy’s Ithaka and Tennyson’s Ulysses both, in different SUN ways, explore the notion of The Journey. And their reference SUN point is one of the central myths of ancient Greek culture, SUN the journey of Ulysses/Odysseus back to his homeland of SUN Ithaka after the end of the Trojan War as recounted in SUN Homer’s great epic the Odyssey. SUN SUN And so we start this sequence with the famous opening to SUN Homer’s Odyssey where the poet invokes the muse for SUN inspiration and describes Ulysses/Odysseus (“the man of many SUN devices”) as he sets out on his return journey. And before SUN that, Keats, whose reading of Homer in the translations of SUN George Chapman was a life-changing experience (“Much have I SUN travelled in the realms of Gold”). SUN [Ravel, Nicholas Maw and Duparc all describe the sun-lit SUN Mediterranean of Greece and the excitement of travel in SUN their music] SUN SUN It was the Greek king Menelaus’s wife, Helen who indirectly SUN caused the Trojan War by running off with the Trojan Prince, SUN Paris. Offenbach takes a sardonic view of the whole affair SUN as the Greek kings and heroes march on in La Belle Hélène. SUN But Christopher Marlowe and Richard Strauss allow themselves SUN to be swept up in her overwhelming beauty. SUN SUN The introductions to Shakespeare’s Troilus and Cressida and SUN Tippett’s King Priam both catapult us into the broil of the SUN Trojan War itself. In The Shield of Achilles Auden SUN reflects bitterly on the differences between the Greek world SUN as described by Homera world where, even amid warfare, SUN imagination naturally ran to scenes of peaceand the world of SUN totalitarian horror Auden himself imagines. At the same SUN time, Auden criticizes Homer for attributing glory to SUN warriors. Auden's moral opprobrium is directed, not at SUN Thetis or Hephaestus, but at "the strong iron-hearted SUN man-slaying Achilles." But, away from the battle we see a SUN softer side of Achilles in his tent, as he fantasizes with SUN his friend Patroclus about their life after the war has SUN finished. SUN [Tippett] SUN SUN The love of Achilles for Patroclus became one of the icons SUN of male romantic love for the Greeks. Cavafy muses on The SUN Horses of Achilles who are upset by the death of Patroclus SUN and mourn the “eternal disaster of death”. SUN SUN The Agathon movement from Bernstein’s Serenade (after SUN Plato’s Symposium) leads from the Cavafy to Agathon’s speech SUN in praise of love from Plato’s Symposium. SUN SUN Ancient Greece seems to have been a very male-dominated SUN society, with women definitely occupying a lower rung of SUN importance. However Greek tragedy has given us some of the SUN strongest female characters in world literature: Medea, SUN Clytemnestra, Elektra and Phaedra whose obsessive sexual SUN passion for the virginal Hippolytus ends in disaster SUN (Racine, Britten) SUN SUN The Greek male by contrast could either have been all-male, SUN all-conquering heroes such as Odysseus and Achilles; or at SUN the other extreme they were chaste epicene youths such as SUN Hippolytus or Ganymede (Goethe, Schubert) SUN We come full circle with Yeats’s poem Leda and the Swan in SUN which Zeus disguises himself as a swan in order to rape Leda SUN who eventually gives birth to Helen whose elopement with SUN Paris triggers the Trojan War SUN SUN The journey to Ancient Greece ends on the slopes of Mount SUN Parnassus with Apollo, the Greek god of poetry inspiring the SUN 9 muses (Stravinsky, Matthew Arnold). And the sequence fades SUN away as Words and Music become one in the wordless SUN conclusion to Strauss’s An dem Baum Daphne: Daphne SUN transformed into a laurel tree by Apollo. MON MON 12:00 Composer of the Week b00vct73 (Listen) MON Steve Reich (b.1936), Episode 1 MON MON Donald Macleod chats exclusively to one of the world's most MON acclaimed living composers - and presents music spanning his MON extraordinary musical career. MON MON "There's just a handful of living composers who can MON legitimately claim to have altered the direction of musical MON history. Steve Reich is one of them". MON MON So wrote the music critic Andrew Clements of this week's MON Composer Of The Week - a man whose remarkable music the New MON York Times also described as "fiercely original, immediately MON recognisable.and wholly accessible". MON MON Steve Reich's music crosses boundaries - admired by MON classical concertgoers, rock bands and house music DJs MON alike. His work rips apart the conventions of genre - making MON use of percussion, amplification and the latest developments MON in recording and even video technology - to create something MON completely new that sits equally happily in the concert MON hall, art gallery or rock concert (at this year's Manchester MON International Festival, he opened for Kraftwerk). MON MON Yet unlike the music of many of his contemporaries, Reich's MON music is immediately accessible to the general public - an MON exuberant, teeming mass, of short, recurring melodies and MON rhythms that chime with the pulse of contemporary life. Yet MON one of the founding fathers of 'minimalism' in music is MON sometimes a controversial figure - his hypnotic patterns and MON slowly shifting textures disparaged by some music lovers as MON overly repetitive...or even simplistic. MON MON Listeners to this week's Composer Of The Week will discover MON that the truth is anything but...as Donald Macleod discusses MON a lifetime in music with the composer, in an extended MON interview conducted at his home in upstate New York in MON September 2010. Just as composers like Beethoven, MON Shostakovich and Mahler captured their era in their MON compositions, so Reich's music distils the pulsating rhythm MON and routine of 21st century urban life. MON MON Wry, witty and disarmingly candid about the ideas and MON influences behind his work, Steve Reich is an engaging and MON insightful guide to his compositions. The series presents a MON selection of music spanning his entire career, from the 1965 MON tape piece "It's Gonna Rain" to the premiere on British MON radio of his Pulitzer Prize-winning "Double Sextet" of 2008. MON MON We also hear some of Reich's most acclaimed works: "Music MON For 18 Musicians", "Different Trains" for string quartet, MON the 'video opera' "The Cave", and on Wednesday, a rare MON complete performance of his extraordinary, African-inspired MON work "Drumming". The series also features a number of MON less-heard works, including his Jewish-infused vocal piece MON "Tehillim" and a rare - and beautiful - foray into MON orchestral writing, 1987's "The Four Sections". MON MON Donald Macleod begins the week by discussing Reich's early MON upbringing and influences with the composer, featuring MON excerpts from two vastly different works: his seminal - and MON radical - tape piece "It's Gonna Rain", and the lush, MON expressively lyrical "Music For 18 Musicians". The programme MON also features a work for no instruments at all - the MON composer's "Clapping Music" - and the gamelan-infused "Music MON For Mallet Instruments, Voices and Organ". THU THU Cash-strapped and oversubscribed, the pressure on THU universities and students seems unprecedented. The coalition THU government is committed to cuts in budgets as part of the THU Comprehensive Spending Review, but the A level results over THU the summer already revealed a tight squeeze on the numbers THU of new entrants. So how should universities react? Should THU they be applying ruthless business models, bringing in THU evermore lucrative foreign students and forming closer bonds THU with industry and business? THU THU And what about students? With the publication of the Browne THU report on student funding, must they accept that THU universities are not the old kind of "seats of learning" and THU that they should consider themselves customers as much as THU scholars? THU THU To find some answers, Night Waves presenter Philip Dodd THU heads not to one of the Russell Group elite universities, or THU a Victorian red brick establishment, but to the University THU of Sunderland which has confidently expanded and is proud of THU its business links. But after making a big impact on the piping FRI world in his early teenage years, Iain junior turned to FRI singing and songwriting, with bands such as Poor Old Ben and FRI Crash My Model Car. This project unites the traditions of FRI his dynastic piping family with his modern-day incarnation FRI as rock musician and songwriter. The ensemble includes FRI guitar, drums, bouzouki and cello as well as pipes and the FRI singing of Rona Lightfoot and Iain Morrison Senior. The FRI session is scheduled for Mary Ann's own studio up in the FRI Western Highlands of Scotland. FRI
