SAT
This week’s Words and Music is on the theme of North, or aSAT
very particular part of it. The Ballad of the NorthernSAT
Lights takes a journey around the North of England throughSAT
the Borders and into Scotland and the Orkneys beforeSAT
reaching a final destination in the dark woods ofSAT
Sibelius’ Finnish woods and mountains and the ArcticSAT
Circle. The programme begins in Yorkshire with Ken Smith’sSAT
poem ‘Colden Valley’ and Ted Hughes’ wintry ‘Crow Hill’SAT
which you’ll hear with Delius’ ‘Winter Landscape’ from hisSAT
‘North Country Sketches’. These ‘North Country Sketches’SAT
were composed during the First World War and are the onlySAT
musical picture of the Yorkshire moors he loved. You’llSAT
also hear the work of two men who made Yorkshire theirSAT
adopted home, Holst’s ‘A Moorside Suite’, the piece whichSAT
the composer wrote for the National Championship for brassSAT
bands in 1928 alongside John Agard’s ‘Caribbean Eye overSAT
Yorkshire’. Then a musical move towards the North EastSAT
with Kathleen Ferrier singing the beautiful NorthumbrianSAT
folk song ‘Blow the Wind Southerly’, Carol Rumen’s lamentSAT
for the shipbuilding industry in ‘Jarrow’ and onto theSAT
Borders with Kathryn Tickell’s ‘Otterburn’.SAT
SAT
From Scotland to the Arctic CircleSAT
SAT
The poet Robert Crawford celebrates with affection hisSAT
‘chip of a nation’ in ‘Scotland’ while James MacMillan’sSAT
‘Shambards’ from his ‘Piano Concerto no 2’ takes its titleSAT
from Edwin Muir’s uncompromising look at Scottish cultureSAT
in his poem ‘Scotland 1941’:SAT
SAT
Mean heirlooms of each fainter generation,SAT
mummied housegods in their musty niches,SAT
Burns and Scott, sham bards of a sham nation.’SAT
SAT
Up to the Orkneys then with Katrina Porteous’ ‘Foula, auldSAT
Yule’, George Mackay Brown’s ‘Song: Further than Hoy’ andSAT
Peter Maxwell Davies ‘Maxwell’s Reel with Northern Lights’SAT
written after the composer attended a community event inSAT
Hoy and saw the northern lights pulsing in and out of timeSAT
SAT
The programme ends near the Arctic Circle with a sectionSAT
of Robert Service’s poem ‘Ballad of the Northern Lights’SAT
and the final movement of the Finnish composer Sibelius’SAT
‘Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in D Minor’, describedSAT
by one conductor as a ‘polonaise for polar bears’.SAT

Milton's ComusSUN
Comus (A Mask Presented at Ludlow Castle, 1634) was aSUN
masque written by John Milton in honour of chastity and itSUN
was first presented on Michaelmas, 1634, before JohnSUN
Egerton, Earl of Bridgewater at Ludlow Castle inSUN
celebration of the Earl's elevation to President of WalesSUN
with music by Henry Lawes. Milton and Lawes had a closeSUN
friendship and collaborated on a number of works, butSUN
Lawes was not the last composer to write music for thisSUN
masque. In Milton's 400th anniversary year, Catherine BottSUN
travels to Ludlow Castle to explore the occasion of thatSUN
first performance and the music which Comus went on toSUN
inspire. The programme includes excerpts from Comus andSUN

well as music from Handel, Saint-Saens, Debussy, PhyllisSUN

SUN
Producer's NotesSUN
SUN
Words and Music this week takes a walk through the park: aSUN
place where children play, lovers kiss, old friendsSUN
reminisce and the affluent rub shoulders with the lost. InSUN
an urban landscape, the park provides an escape from theSUN
everyday, but in the stillness and space both joy andSUN
sadness can seem heightened.SUN
So we find pleasure and cheerfulness in the park, startingSUN
with the jaunty optimism of Charles Williams' ‘A QuietSUN
Stroll’. Later, in William Thackeray’s ‘Vanity Fair’ weSUN
encounter a fun-loving crowd at the Vauxhall Gardens - andSUN
at the conclusion of the programme, we delight in lifeSUN
with David Constantine’s ‘Woman on a Swing’ as she rocksSUN
her life “back to the lip of the breaking wave ofSUN
girlhood”.SUN
An extract from Roy Porter’s ‘London: A Social History’SUN
tells us how Kensington Gardens became the most exclusiveSUN
green after Queen Caroline sought to ‘prevent personsSUN
meanly clad from going into the garden’. And we hear theSUN
quasi-pastoral sentiments of Thomas Arne’s ‘Cantata:SUN
Delia’, featured as a part of the entertainment atSUN
Vauxhall Gardens; and it was at the Gardens that in 1749SUN
there was a full rehearsal of Handel’s ‘Music for theSUN
Royal Fireworks’, in preparation for its later performanceSUN
in Green Park. In ‘Guards!’, D.H. Lawrence gives anSUN
account of the crowd watching a review in Hyde Park inSUN
1913 – and the pomp and ceremony of that occasionSUN
continues in Derek Broadbent’s march ‘The BritishSUN
Bandsman’, played by West Yorkshire’s Brighouse & RastrickSUN
Band.SUN
SUN
But we also stumble upon sorrow and grief – at the startSUN
of the programme, the mother described by Gwen HarwoodSUN
feels ‘eaten alive’ by her children; Douglas Dunn writesSUN
of a father in a park in the Lowlands who, in the idyllicSUN
sunlight of a July evening, grieves for the son he willSUN
lose to leukaemia. The darkness that can overshadow us inSUN
beautiful surroundings is also reflected in SaraSUN
Teasdale’s poem ‘Spring Night’, and Charles Ives’ musicalSUN
evocation of night sounds: Central Park in the Dark.SUN
And it is on the park bench that the realisation comes ofSUN
what we have done to spoil our lives and devastate others…SUN
as in Graham Greene’s ‘The End of the Affair’, as BendrixSUN
is confronted by the Henry, the husband of his ex-lover,SUN
Sarah… as Robin Robertson’s park drunk’ wakes to frost andSUN
drinks ‘for winter’.SUN
SUN
Greta Scacchi and Henry Goodman lead a literary ambleSUN
through the park, with poetry by DH Lawrence, MatthewSUN
Arnold, Gwen Harwood and Sara Teasdale; and music bySUN
Handel, Charles Ives and Phyllis Tate.SUN

feature leading Scottish pianist Brian Kellock, who playedSUN
the original Gershwin piece as a music student inSUN

clarinet glissando and Gershwin's heart-breaking nostalgicSUN
refrain, have been used.SUN

rousing oratorio Judas Maccabeus. It is conducted by oneMON
of the great Baroque music interpreters of today, WilliamMON
Christie.MON
MON
Judas Maccabeus was one of the most popular oratorios inMON
Handel's lifetime, and it continues to appeal to currentMON
audiences, with its rousing choruses and strong melodies.MON
Based on the Jewish story of Judas Maccabeus leading theMON
Israelites to victory over their enemies, Handel and hisMON
librettist Thomas Morrell were making a highly politicalMON
statement, celebrating the victory of the Duke ofMON
Cumberland and the House of Hanover over the ScottishMON
Jacobite rebels at Culloden. For this reason it stillMON
remains provocative today.MON

RevolutionTUE
Philip Dodd presents a special edition dedicated to one ofTUE
the most momentous and dangerous ideas of recent centuriesTUE
- revolution. Does the concept still have any real meaning?TUE
TUE
In the late 1970s, the idea of revolution andTUE
counter-revolution still loomed large in westernTUE
civilisation. The events of Bolshevik Russia in 1917 stillTUE
shaped the globe. And the events of Jacobin France 1789TUE
still shaped the mind. For over two centuries,TUE
self-declared revolutionaries and their opponents had notTUE
only stalked politics, but also the arts and social change.TUE
TUE
But today the landmarks come from the East - Tehran'sTUE
Islamic revolution in 1979 or China's communist one inTUE
1949 now have a greater influence on world events - andTUE
1917 and 1789 have passed into history. At the height ofTUE
the recession, there has been no revolutionary talk asTUE
there was in the 1930s.TUE
TUE
On the eve of the 20th anniversaries of the 'VelvetTUE
Revolutions' of 1989, Philip and a round-table of guestsTUE
attempt to get to grips with what's left of theTUE
revolutionary spirit - and ask whether it's an idea thatTUE
still mobilises.TUE

of Europe, selected to take part in the orchestra eachWED

International Festival, they showcase their talents inWED
music by composers who were all active in Rome in the lateWED
17th and early 18th centuries - Corelli, Muffat, GeminianiWED
and Handel.WED
WED
For many Baroque composers, Rome was an important place toWED
visit and study, and both Muffat and Handel absorbedWED
elements of the Italian style whilst staying there, as isWED
evident in their sonatas in this concert. Corelli was oneWED
of the most influential musicians in Italy at this timeWED
and his concerti grossi were imitated and developed by hisWED
successors, including his pupil Geminiani.WED
