SUN SUN The programme begins with an exotic work composed in 1979 SUN by the Frenchman Claude Vivier. Huge orchestral forces SUN conjure up the immensity of the cosmos, and the piece SUN suggests that human nature is just as vast and SUN unfathomable. SUN SUN The original piano suite has been arranged hundreds of SUN times, not just for classical orchestra but for a wide SUN range of instruments and ensembles including accordion, SUN double bass, brass, harpischord, heavy metal band, SUN prog-rock band, organ, percussion and synthesiser. SUN SUN Gabriel comes from a family that has a close association SUN with the piece: his grandfather, the composer Sergei SUN Prokofiev, regularly played the original version in his SUN piano recitals. Perhaps nobody has SUN ever looked at death, hell, human nature and God quite so SUN uncompromisingly as the lawyer born in Noyon in 1509, who SUN gave his name to one of the fiercest and most influential SUN forms of Protestantism. SUN SUN John Calvin believed in a world where God controlled all, SUN and who went to heaven and who went to hell was SUN predestined - Christ died for only a select few. Nothing SUN except the Bible was tolerated in church which led to SUN Calvinism's terrible reputation as a destroyer of art. SUN SUN It is argued that Calvinism influenced many aspects of our SUN modern society - science, economics, philosophy, democracy SUN - but such claims are considered by historians to be SUN overblown. They instead highlight the strangely SUN paradoxical qualities of a faith which fuelled both the SUN religious wars of the 17th century and the enlightenment SUN which followed. SUN SUN Moving from Geneva to Scotland, and talking to historians SUN Diarmaid MacCulloch and Bill Naphy, as well as novelists SUN Marilynne Robinson and James Robertson, Andrew explores SUN the sometimes unexpected legacies of this extraordinarily SUN polarising system of belief. With works by Calvin read by SUN John Sessions and music by Cappella Nova. SUN SUN 22:30 Words and Music b007hpzq (Listen) SUN SUN Russian Dreams SUN SUN A journey to Russia, as imagined by poets and musicians: SUN natives, exiles and foreigners. SUN SUN Music by French composer Tournemire conjures up the bells SUN of Moscow, while verses by Marina Tsvetaeva give a Russian SUN literary slant on the same subject. Stravinsky depicts his SUN homeland from the perspective of both resident and emigre, SUN one in an unabashedly Russian vein, the other unmistakably SUN coloured by his exposure to American jazz. SUN SUN Including poems by Anna Akhmatova, Mikhail Lermontov and SUN Osip Mandelstam, and music by Borodin, John Field and SUN Schnittke. Readings by Andrew Sachs and Siobhan Redmond. SUN SUN Producer's Note SUN SUN This week's sequence is intended as a poetic journey to SUN Russia, seen through the eyes of inhabitants, exiles and SUN visitors. This is a romanticised Russia, a country of SUN colourful folk traditions, picturesque cities and rural SUN charm - this selection deliberately ignores the SUN characteristically darker strand of national culture that SUN with intense self-examination deals with the often harsh SUN realities of Russian life. SUN SUN The programme has three main themes. We begin with poems SUN by Pasternak, Parnok and Mandelstam about cities in SUN general and Moscow in particular, complemented by one of SUN Russia's most popular songs, Moscow Nights, and SUN Tournemire's evocative symphonic movement entitled The SUN Bells of Moscow. I wanted also to reflect the Russian SUN spring, a violent climatic event which, to quote SUN Stravinsky, seemed to begin in an hour and was like the SUN whole Earth cracking, and poems by Andreev and Pasternak SUN depict this, as does music by Glazunov. The final section SUN of the programme deals with the Russian's attachment to SUN his or her homeland, and includes poems of exile and SUN patriotism by Anna Akhmatova, Arseny Tarkovsky and SUN Lermontov. Stravinsky is represented by music from The SUN Firebird (one of his most Russian ballets) and by his SUN jazz-inflected Scherzo a la Russe, a work written after SUN many years' self-imposed American exile. The sequence SUN closes with music by Tchaikovsky, a string quartet SUN movement (based on a folk melody) which is said to have SUN moved Tolstoy to tears. FRI FRI What did Mahler owe to his study of Nietzsche? Were there FRI many musicians who knew of and were inspired by Freud's FRI Interpretation of Dreams when it appeared in 1899? And how FRI did Wittgenstein respond to the music of late 19th century FRI Vienna? The Austrian capital was a place of challenge and FRI iconoclasm during this period and the boundaries between FRI concert hall and study were blurring as thinkers and FRI musicians re-evaluated the nature of human experience. From FRI Bernini's architecture and sculpture in Rome, the playful FRI gardens at Versailles, to the grand dome of St Paul's FRI Cathedral and the music of Monteverdi and Bach, he FRI discovers that new ideas about perspective, capturing FRI movement and the infinite all play a part in the baroque FRI vision. FRI FRI 'The Baroque was always a style I'd associated with FRI vulgarity and excess. But in this programme I’ve FRI discovered how much control and structure underpins the FRI spectacle of the baroque. The dramatic and sensational FRI effects of the greatest baroque architects like Borromini FRI and Bernini are founded on sound mathematical principles. FRI Painters like Caravaggio and Rubens are battling with the FRI same problems as Newton and Leibniz in their attempt to FRI capture bodies in motion. And the extravagant sounds of FRI Monteverdi and Bach would not be possible without the FRI mathematical development of new ideas of temperament.
