Pictures Re-arrangedSUN
Composer and producer Gabriel Prokofiev looks atSUN
arrangements of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition.SUN
SUN
The original piano suite has been arranged hundreds ofSUN
times, not just for classical orchestra but for a wideSUN
range of instruments and ensembles including accordion,SUN
double bass, brass, harpischord, heavy metal band,SUN
prog-rock band, organ, percussion and synthesiser.SUN
SUN
Gabriel comes from a family that has a close associationSUN
with the piece: his grandfather, the composer SergeiSUN
Prokofiev, regularly played the original version in hisSUN
piano recitals.SUN
SUN
Gabriel looks at the enduring appeal of Pictures at anSUN
Exhibition for the composer/arranger, and considers someSUN
of the many and varied arrangements that have been made.SUN

Smashing the IdolsSUN
Writer Andrew Brown explores the controversial culturalSUN
and theological legacy of Calvinism. Perhaps nobody hasSUN
ever looked at death, hell, human nature and God quite soSUN
uncompromisingly as the lawyer born in Noyon in 1509, whoSUN
gave his name to one of the fiercest and most influentialSUN
forms of Protestantism.SUN
SUN
John Calvin believed in a world where God controlled all,SUN
and who went to heaven and who went to hell wasSUN
predestined - Christ died for only a select few. NothingSUN
except the Bible was tolerated in church which led toSUN
Calvinism's terrible reputation as a destroyer of art.SUN
SUN
It is argued that Calvinism influenced many aspects of ourSUN
modern society - science, economics, philosophy, democracySUN
- but such claims are considered by historians to beSUN
overblown. They instead highlight the strangelySUN
paradoxical qualities of a faith which fuelled both theSUN
religious wars of the 17th century and the enlightenmentSUN
which followed.SUN
SUN
Moving from Geneva to Scotland, and talking to historiansSUN
Diarmaid MacCulloch and Bill Naphy, as well as novelistsSUN
Marilynne Robinson and James Robertson, Andrew exploresSUN
the sometimes unexpected legacies of this extraordinarilySUN
polarising system of belief. With works by Calvin read bySUN
John Sessions and music by Cappella Nova.SUN

Russian DreamsSUN
SUN
A journey to Russia, as imagined by poets and musicians:SUN
natives, exiles and foreigners.SUN
SUN
Music by French composer Tournemire conjures up the bellsSUN
of Moscow, while verses by Marina Tsvetaeva give a RussianSUN
literary slant on the same subject. Stravinsky depicts hisSUN
homeland from the perspective of both resident and emigre,SUN
one in an unabashedly Russian vein, the other unmistakablySUN
coloured by his exposure to American jazz.SUN
SUN
Including poems by Anna Akhmatova, Mikhail Lermontov andSUN
Osip Mandelstam, and music by Borodin, John Field andSUN
Schnittke. Readings by Andrew Sachs and Siobhan Redmond.SUN
SUN
Producer's NoteSUN
SUN
This week's sequence is intended as a poetic journey toSUN
Russia, seen through the eyes of inhabitants, exiles andSUN
visitors. This is a romanticised Russia, a country ofSUN
colourful folk traditions, picturesque cities and ruralSUN
charm - this selection deliberately ignores theSUN
characteristically darker strand of national culture thatSUN
with intense self-examination deals with the often harshSUN
realities of Russian life.SUN
SUN
The programme has three main themes. We begin with poemsSUN
by Pasternak, Parnok and Mandelstam about cities inSUN
general and Moscow in particular, complemented by one ofSUN
Russia's most popular songs, Moscow Nights, andSUN
Tournemire's evocative symphonic movement entitled TheSUN
Bells of Moscow. I wanted also to reflect the RussianSUN
spring, a violent climatic event which, to quoteSUN
Stravinsky, seemed to begin in an hour and was like theSUN
whole Earth cracking, and poems by Andreev and PasternakSUN
depict this, as does music by Glazunov. The final sectionSUN
of the programme deals with the Russian's attachment toSUN
his or her homeland, and includes poems of exile andSUN
patriotism by Anna Akhmatova, Arseny Tarkovsky andSUN
Lermontov. Stravinsky is represented by music from TheSUN
Firebird (one of his most Russian ballets) and by hisSUN
jazz-inflected Scherzo a la Russe, a work written afterSUN
many years' self-imposed American exile. The sequenceSUN
closes with music by Tchaikovsky, a string quartetSUN
movement (based on a folk melody) which is said to haveSUN
moved Tolstoy to tears.SUN

Antonio Salieri (1750-1825), Episode 1MON
Donald Macleod explores the life and work of theMON
much-maligned Antonio Salieri, mainly remembered today forMON
supposedly poisoning Mozart through jealousy of theMON
younger composer's talent. Is it right that this onceMON
highly-celebrated composer and teacher should beMON
remembered for an unsubstantiated rumour?MON
MON
He charts Salieri's formative years, focusing on the lossMON
of his parents, and good fortune of being discovered byMON
the composer Florian Leopold Gassmann and taken fromMON
Venice to Vienna. Including a specially-made recording byMON
the BBC Singers of the Missa stylo a cappella, documentedMON
as being one of Salieri's first compositions - and oneMON

The Annual General Boiled Egg PanicMON
A specially-commissioned memoir from comedian and authorMON
Alexei Sayle, in celebration of bank holidays.MON
MON
As the son of a train guard and union official, theMON
Liverpool-raised Alexei has more reason than most toMON
remember the bank holiday. It meant that the Sayle familyMON
could travel all over Europe by rail for free. But it alsoMON
meant that often holidays were spent in the EnglishMON
seaside town that was hosting the Annual General MeetingMON
of the National Union of Railwaymen, and the only foreignMON
interest was provided by fraternal delegates sent fromMON
SNCF, the French railway.MON
MON
Alexei recalls the cherished passes that allowed him in toMON
all the local attractions free. He remembers the strangeMON
nature of the meetings themselves - like rock festivalsMON
'where the stars...were balding alcoholics in ill-fittingMON
suits, talking gibberish'. But come the annual dinnerMON
dance, they revealed themselves as sharp and fluent,MON
masters of the jive and the waltz.MON
MON
But at the age of 14, Alexei wasn't so keen on theMON
meetings anymore, especially when the union meeting was inMON
Southport, just a few miles from home. So he committed aMON
daring, meaningless and highly significant act.MON

Coming from a London Jewish background with a father whoMON

initially went into medicine before becoming involved inMON
the 60s satirical movement along with Peter Cook and AlanMON
Bennett. This led to an invitation to work in televisionMON
and then the theatre before he made his debut in the 70sMON
directing opera. But Miller never left medicine behind,MON
working on TV series like the Body in Question and MadnessMON
which reached large audiences in the UK and America.MON

Miller reflects on the way his career has been borne outMON

Donald Macleod explores the life and work of theTHU

supposedly poisoning Mozart through jealousy of theTHU

THU
Donald discusses Salieri's first public competitionTHU
against Mozart, initiated by the Holy Roman Emperor JosephTHU
II. Both composers had to write a short opera in their ownTHU
language, and these would be presented side by side asTHU
part of the 1786 carnival season in Vienna. Salieri's workTHU
Prima la Musica, Poi le Parole, won favour over Mozart'sTHU
composition.THU
THU
In addition to this, there was another opportunity toTHU
travel back to Paris to compose two more works, where heTHU
collaborated with the notorious Beaumarchais. Back inTHU
Vienna, Salieri was now appointed director of music to theTHU
Imperial Chapel. He was the most influential composer inTHU
all Europe, and with this came a change in direction fromTHU
opera, to sacred music and teaching.THU

From Ecstasy to InfinityFRI
Mathematician Marcus du Sautoy explores the role ofFRI
science and mathematics in the arts of the baroque. FromFRI
Bernini's architecture and sculpture in Rome, the playfulFRI
gardens at Versailles, to the grand dome of St Paul'sFRI
Cathedral and the music of Monteverdi and Bach, heFRI
discovers that new ideas about perspective, capturingFRI
movement and the infinite all play a part in the baroqueFRI
vision.FRI
FRI
'The Baroque was always a style I'd associated withFRI
vulgarity and excess. But in this programme I’veFRI
discovered how much control and structure underpins theFRI
spectacle of the baroque. The dramatic and sensationalFRI
effects of the greatest baroque architects like BorrominiFRI
and Bernini are founded on sound mathematical principles.FRI
Painters like Caravaggio and Rubens are battling with theFRI
same problems as Newton and Leibniz in their attempt toFRI
capture bodies in motion. And the extravagant sounds ofFRI
Monteverdi and Bach would not be possible without theFRI
mathematical development of new ideas of temperament. ItFRI
