Perhaps nobody hasSUNever looked at death, hell, human nature and God quite soSUNuncompromisingly as the lawyer born in Noyon in 1509, whoSUNgave his name to one of the fiercest and most influentialSUNforms of Protestantism.SUNSUNJohn Calvin believed in a world where God controlled all,SUNand who went to heaven and who went to hell wasSUNpredestined - Christ died for only a select few. NothingSUNexcept the Bible was tolerated in church which led toSUNCalvinism's terrible reputation as a destroyer of art.SUNSUNIt is argued that Calvinism influenced many aspects of ourSUNmodern society - science, economics, philosophy, democracySUN- but such claims are considered by historians to beSUNoverblown. They instead highlight the strangelySUNparadoxical qualities of a faith which fuelled both theSUNreligious wars of the 17th century and the enlightenmentSUNwhich followed.SUNSUNMoving from Geneva to Scotland, and talking to historiansSUNDiarmaid MacCulloch and Bill Naphy, as well as novelistsSUNMarilynne Robinson and James Robertson, Andrew exploresSUNthe sometimes unexpected legacies of this extraordinarilySUNpolarising system of belief. With works by Calvin read bySUNJohn Sessions and music by Cappella Nova.SUNSUN22:30 Words and Music b007hpzq (Listen)SUNSUNRussian DreamsSUNSUNA journey to Russia, as imagined by poets and musicians:SUNnatives, exiles and foreigners.SUNSUNMusic by French composer Tournemire conjures up the bellsSUNof Moscow, while verses by Marina Tsvetaeva give a RussianSUNliterary slant on the same subject. Stravinsky depicts hisSUNhomeland from the perspective of both resident and emigre,SUNone in an unabashedly Russian vein, the other unmistakablySUNcoloured by his exposure to American jazz.SUNSUNIncluding poems by Anna Akhmatova, Mikhail Lermontov andSUNOsip Mandelstam, and music by Borodin, John Field andSUNSchnittke. Readings by Andrew Sachs and Siobhan Redmond.SUNSUNProducer's NoteSUNSUNThis week's sequence is intended as a poetic journey toSUNRussia, seen through the eyes of inhabitants, exiles andSUNvisitors. This is a romanticised Russia, a country ofSUNcolourful folk traditions, picturesque cities and ruralSUNcharm - this selection deliberately ignores theSUNcharacteristically darker strand of national culture thatSUNwith intense self-examination deals with the often harshSUNrealities of Russian life.SUNSUNThe programme has three main themes. We begin with poemsSUNby Pasternak, Parnok and Mandelstam about cities inSUNgeneral and Moscow in particular, complemented by one ofSUNRussia's most popular songs, Moscow Nights, andSUNTournemire's evocative symphonic movement entitled TheSUNBells of Moscow. I wanted also to reflect the RussianSUNspring, a violent climatic event which, to quoteSUNStravinsky, seemed to begin in an hour and was like theSUNwhole Earth cracking, and poems by Andreev and PasternakSUNdepict this, as does music by Glazunov. The final sectionSUNof the programme deals with the Russian's attachment toSUNhis or her homeland, and includes poems of exile andSUNpatriotism by Anna Akhmatova, Arseny Tarkovsky andSUNLermontov. Stravinsky is represented by music from TheSUNFirebird (one of his most Russian ballets) and by hisSUNjazz-inflected Scherzo a la Russe, a work written afterSUNmany years' self-imposed American exile. The sequenceSUNcloses with music by Tchaikovsky, a string quartetSUNmovement (based on a folk melody) which is said to haveSUNmoved Tolstoy to tears.SUNSUNThomas Morris (Producer)SUNSUNRunning OrderSUNSUN00:00:00SUNMoscow Nights (Podmoskovn Vechera)SUNVladimir Troshin/Women's Chorus & Radio ConcertSUNOrchestra/V.
