SUN       and theological legacy of Calvinism. Perhaps nobody has
SUN       ever looked at death, hell, human nature and God quite so
SUN       uncompromisingly as the lawyer born in Noyon in 1509, who
SUN       gave his name to one of the fiercest and most influential
SUN       forms of Protestantism.

SUN       John Calvin believed in a world where God controlled all,
SUN       and who went to heaven and who went to hell was
SUN       predestined - Christ died for only a select few. Nothing
SUN       except the Bible was tolerated in church which led to
SUN       Calvinism's terrible reputation as a destroyer of art.

SUN       It is argued that Calvinism influenced many aspects of our
SUN       modern society - science, economics, philosophy, democracy
SUN       - but such claims are considered by historians to be
SUN       overblown. They instead highlight the strangely
SUN       paradoxical qualities of a faith which fuelled both the
SUN       religious wars of the 17th century and the enlightenment
SUN       which followed.

SUN       This week's sequence is intended as a poetic journey to
SUN       Russia, seen through the eyes of inhabitants, exiles and
SUN       visitors. This is a romanticised Russia, a country of
SUN       colourful folk traditions, picturesque cities and rural
SUN       charm - this selection deliberately ignores the
SUN       characteristically darker strand of national culture that
SUN       with intense self-examination deals with the often harsh
SUN       realities of Russian life.

SUN       The programme has three main themes. We begin with poems
SUN       by Pasternak, Parnok and Mandelstam about cities in
SUN       general and Moscow in particular, complemented by one of
SUN       Russia's most popular songs, Moscow Nights, and
SUN       Tournemire's evocative symphonic movement entitled The
SUN       Bells of Moscow. I wanted also to reflect the Russian
SUN       spring, a violent climatic event which, to quote
SUN       Stravinsky, seemed to begin in an hour and was like the
SUN       whole Earth cracking, and poems by Andreev and Pasternak
SUN       depict this, as does music by Glazunov. The final section
SUN       of the programme deals with the Russian's attachment to
SUN       his or her homeland, and includes poems of exile and
SUN       patriotism by Anna Akhmatova, Arseny Tarkovsky and
SUN       Lermontov. Stravinsky is represented by music from The

MON       remembered for an unsubstantiated rumour?

MON       He charts Salieri's formative years, focusing on the loss
MON       of his parents, and good fortune of being discovered by
MON       the composer Florian Leopold Gassmann and taken from
MON       Venice to Vienna. Including a specially-made recording by

MON       as being one of Salieri's first compositions - and one

MON       As the son of a train guard and union official, the
MON       Liverpool-raised Alexei has more reason than most to
MON       remember the bank holiday. It meant that the Sayle family
MON       could travel all over Europe by rail for free. But it also
MON       meant that often holidays were spent in the English
MON       seaside town that was hosting the Annual General Meeting
MON       of the National Union of Railwaymen, and the only foreign
MON       interest was provided by fraternal delegates sent from
MON       SNCF, the French railway.
MON       
MON       Alexei recalls the cherished passes that allowed him in to
MON       all the local attractions free. He remembers the strange
MON       nature of the meetings themselves - like rock festivals
MON       'where the stars...were balding alcoholics in ill-fitting
MON       suits, talking gibberish'. But come the annual dinner
MON       dance, they revealed themselves as sharp and fluent,
MON       masters of the jive and the waltz.

MON       But at the age of 14, Alexei wasn't so keen on the
MON       meetings anymore, especially when the union meeting was in
MON       Southport, just a few miles from home. So he committed a
MON       daring, meaningless and highly significant act.

MON       and then the theatre before he made his debut in the 70s
MON       directing opera. But Miller never left medicine behind,
MON       working on TV series like the Body in Question and Madness

TUE       much-maligned Antonio Salieri, mainly remembered today for
TUE       supposedly poisoning Mozart through jealousy of the
TUE       younger composer's talent.

TUE       He surveys Salieri's beginnings as a composer in Vienna,
TUE       where he was employed as composer for the Imperial Chamber
TUE       for the Emperor and would have been responsible for
TUE       writing suitable chamber music; we hear the Cassazione
TUE       that was likely to have been performed during royal
TUE       banquets. Salieri, working with his mentor Gassmann at
TUE       Vienna's opera house, was also offered the opportunity to
TUE       compose an opera, a field in which he would make his
TUE       biggest mark.

WED       much-maligned Antonio Salieri, mainly remembered today for
WED       supposedly poisoning Mozart through jealousy of the
WED       younger composer's talent.

WED       He traces Salieri's highly successful career in the world
WED       of opera. On the recommendation of Gluck, Salieri was
WED       invited to Milan to compose L'Europa riconosciuta for the
WED       official opening of La Scala. During his tour around
WED       Italy, he also had time to compose other works, including
WED       the featured Piccola Serenta.
WED       
WED       Later, Salieri was offered another notable opera
WED       commission, again on the advice of Gluck - a work for the
WED       Paris Opera. Once in Paris, he journeyed to Versailles to
WED       perform for Marie Antoinette.

THU       Donald discusses Salieri's first public competition
THU       against Mozart, initiated by the Holy Roman Emperor Joseph
THU       II. Both composers had to write a short opera in their own
THU       language, and these would be presented side by side as
THU       part of the 1786 carnival season in Vienna. Salieri's work
THU       Prima la Musica, Poi le Parole, won favour over Mozart's
THU       composition.
THU       
THU       In addition to this, there was another opportunity to
THU       travel back to Paris to compose two more works, where he
THU       collaborated with the notorious Beaumarchais. Back in
THU       Vienna, Salieri was now appointed director of music to the
THU       Imperial Chapel. He was the most influential composer in
THU       all Europe, and with this came a change in direction from
THU       opera, to sacred music and teaching.

FRI       remembered for an unsubstantiated rumour?

FRI       He follows the last years of Salieri's life when, sick in
FRI       body and mind, he confessed to killing Mozart. Donald asks
FRI       whether there is any truth in the rumour, and traces the
FRI       impact Salieri had in his lifetime on the world of music.

FRI       to the moon, mezzo-soprano Hilary Summers sings Night of
FRI       the Four Moons, a work composed by Crumb during the Apollo
FRI       11 flight. Crumb often incorporates theatre into his work
FRI       and Vox balaenae (Voice of the Whale) draws inspiration
FRI       from the songs of humpback whales for which the three
FRI       performers on stage are required to wear masks to efface
FRI       their human presence. Soprano Claire Booth leads a septet
FRI       of performers in Ancient Voices of Children, a highly
FRI       expressive cycle set to verses by Federico Garcia Lorca.
