Purcell and Dryden - A Professional FriendshipSAT
Alyn Shipton explores Dryden and Purcell's collaborationSAT
on the semi-opera King Arthur, a work which is oftenSAT
regarded as the first professional collaboration betweenSAT
librettist and composer. He is joined by PurcellSAT
biographer Jonathan Keates, who describes some of theSAT
sights, sounds and smell of the world of RestorationSAT
theatre. It was a period in which people would come in andSAT
out for single acts of an opera, jostle in the stalls andSAT
swap seats in boxes, while the privileged would claimSAT
seats on the stage.SAT
SAT
There is a look at the latest scholarship on the genesisSAT
of the opera, with Dryden's biographer, James Wynn, whoSAT
traces the origins of the collaboration between the twoSAT
men in the preface to Dioclesian, which was signed bySAT
Purcell but written by Dryden. He explains thatSAT
17th-century authorship was a bit like the teams ofSAT
writers on a present-day sitcom.SAT
SAT
Alyn also considers the origin of the Knights of theSAT
Garter, the redecoration of Windsor Castle and the messySAT
politics of Jacobites supporting the ousted James IISAT
versus William III's Orange and Protestant sympathies.SAT
This provides the background to such remarkable musicalSAT
treats as Purcell and Dryden's Chorus of Cold People, theSAT
paeon of praise to St George, and the best-known settingSAT
in the opera Fairest Isle. With naked sylphs, ancientSAT
British battles and a drinking song worthy of the terracesSAT
at an England game, Alyn sheds new light on this mostSAT
fascinating of operas.SAT

Eustache du CaurroySAT
Andrew Carwood presents a programme of sacred music by theSAT
little-known 16th century French composer Eustache duSAT
Caurroy, recorded by the BBC Singers.SAT
SAT
Du Caurroy was born in 1549 near Beauvais. Nothing isSAT
really known about his childhood or musical education, butSAT
he apparently declared that he had learned his trade 'bySAT
reading good authors and imitating the ancients'. It isSAT
thought that some of those 'good authors' and 'ancients'SAT
included composers such as Josquin des Prez, AdrianSAT
Willaert and Gioseffo Zarlino, who were among the leadingSAT
lights of the generation before Caurroy. Not a badSAT
starting block, then, for a composer who was to become oneSAT
of the greatest musicians in Europe during his lifetime.SAT
SAT
Du Caurroy served the French royal court for his entireSAT
career until his death in 1609. His legacy lived on longSAT
after his passing, and in 1636 the philosopher MarinSAT
Mersenne wrote of him 'Du Caurroy reigns supreme for theSAT
great harmoniousness of his composition and his richSAT
counterpoint...all the composers of France hold him to beSAT
their master.' These are fine words about a composer whoSAT
seems to have all but disappeared from our churchSAT
repertoire today.SAT

From Cadogan Hall, London. Presented by Louise Fryer.SAT
SAT
Long-term chamber partners Joshua Bell and Steven IsserlisSAT
join forces with a brilliant young Hungarian pianist forSAT
music of poetry and drama. They perform Fantasiestucke,SAT
Schumann's four character pieces, which were theSAT
composer's first works for piano trio, composed in 1842SAT
when he was particularly interested in the form.SAT
SAT
These are followed by Mendelssohn's Piano Trio, Op 49,SAT
which Schumann himself dubbed 'the master trio of ourSAT
age'. It bears the hallmarks of an expressive 'songSAT
without words' and a fleeting 'scherzo', alongside theSAT
Romantic sweep and grandeur of its outer movements.SAT

Gnawa and World Music Festival 2009 Part 2SAT
Lucy Duran presents highlights from the 2009 Gnawa andSAT
World Music Festival in Essaouira on Morocco's AtlanticSAT
coast, an annual free festival which celebrates theSAT
ancient tradition of trance music. With performances bySAT
Braim El Belkani, a gnawa master who once played with LedSAT
Zeppelin, and Morocco's most celebrated band, the veteransSAT
Nass El Ghiwane.SAT
SAT
Essaouira is an old stone town that is home to an evenSAT
older style of music which arrived in Morocco centuriesSAT
ago with the slaves who came from across the Sahara. It isSAT
a sacred music which is traditionally heard at all-nightSAT
'lilas', where animal sacrifices are made and people areSAT
healed from spiritual and physical ailments.SAT
SAT
The sound of the music is characterised by the bass thumpSAT
of the three-stringed gimbri and the strident clatter ofSAT
metal castanets. The Gnawa and World Music Festival wasSAT
established 12 years ago to celebrate the gnawa tradition,SAT
with concerts featuring gnawa masters from all overSAT
Morocco, together with events where gnawa musiciansSAT
collaborate with artists from across the globe.SAT

Hampton HawesSAT
In the 1950s, Hampton Hawes was the most exciting andSAT
technically gifted pianist in Los Angeles. Pianist andSAT
author Tim Richards guides Alyn Shipton through theSAT
highlights of Hawes' trio recordings made with the likesSAT
of saxophonist Art Pepper, works which are consideredSAT
landmarks in the history of jazz piano. After a period inSAT
prison, Hawes emerged a changed man - Richards alsoSAT
selects the key recordings from his later moreSAT
contemplative years.SAT

Rainer Hersch, stand-up comedian and classical musicSAT

Gerard Hoffnung.SAT
SAT
Hoffnung, who died in 1959 at the age of 34, was aSAT
cartoonist and wit whose mocking of the solemn rituals ofSAT
classical music created a sensation in the 1950s. At aSAT
time when the symphony concert was a matter of greatSAT
seriousness for music-lovers, Hoffnung loved to see theSAT
funny side of those formalities. His famous cartoons tookSAT

Dvorak wrote his Ninth Symphony during a three-year staySAT
in New York during the 1890s. He wrote the title 'From theSAT

declared that it was in the spirit of Negro and Red IndianSAT
folk music. Dvorak stopped short of using any actualSAT
American melodies, but it is often said that the spiritualSAT

It is also undeniable that in his Ninth Symphony Dvorak isSAT

Vivaldi ConcertosSUN
Catherine Bott talks to the violinist and director of theSUN
ensemble La Serenissima, Adrian Chandler, about hisSUN
recordings of some of Antonio Vivaldi's lesser-knownSUN
concertos. Vivaldi wrote over five hundred concertos,SUN

Chandler has long been a champion of Vivaldi as aSUN
composer, and is keen to demonstrate some of his lessSUN
popular works in the concerto idiom. The programme willSUN
include complete performances of the Concerto for violin,SUN

For the Island I SingSUN
George Mackay Brown was one of the most important ScottishSUN
poets of the 20th century. He believed a poet was born,SUN
not made, and his gifts might either flourish or witherSUN
depending on circumstance. In his case he suspected that,SUN
had he grown up in a city, he might never have written aSUN
word. He lived in Orkney, and the islands for him became aSUN
'place of order, a place of remembrance, a place ofSUN
vision' which sustained him throughout his life.SUN
SUN
Poet Kenneth Steven travels to Stromness, where GeorgeSUN
Mackay Brown remained for almost his entire life, to speakSUN
to those who remember him and his influence in theSUN

SUN
Words and Music this week explores the warrior in poetrySUN
and music, from classical heroes to more contemporarySUN
soldiers. These are fighting men and women, in their ownSUN
words to their troops, in their quiet moments alone, andSUN
in the eyes of those who love them and sometimes lose them.SUN
SUN
There is loss as well as triumph. Queen Elizabeth I makesSUN
an appearance rousing her troops to repel the SpanishSUN
Armada. Hector of Troy leads his men into battle againstSUN
the Greeks, and is mourned later, by his wife in Berlioz’sSUN
Les Troyennes, and his father in Michael Longley’sSUN
Ceasefire. George Orwell shares his experiences of theSUN
Spanish Civil War, and Ivor Gurney’s In Flanders aches forSUN
the hills of home. Tennyson’s King Arthur is the elderlySUN
king at the end of his life. The only political protest inSUN
the programme is Bob Dylan’s Masters of War.SUN
SUN
Wellington’s Victory by Beethoven opens the programme withSUN
a martial call to arms, an orchestral evocation of battle,SUN
and Purcell’s Bonduca suite is an early tribute to theSUN
great British warrior Queen who fought the Romans, whileSUN
June Tabor’s version of a traditional World War I songSUN
gives a tender sense of a generation of boys lost to theirSUN
mothers. I’ve paired the Anglo Saxon poem Wulf andSUN
Eadwacer, in which a woman pines for her warrior’s return,SUN
SUN
Deborah Findlay and Don Warrington read poetry fromSUN
Shakespeare, Christopher Logue, Michael Longley and U.A.SUN

John Goldie/EmpiricalSUN
Julian Joseph presents a session from guitarist JohnSUN
Goldie, given at the Recital Room, City Halls in GlasgowSUN
in May 2009, and a profile of the new album from LondonSUN
group Empirical, featuring an interview with band membersSUN
Nathaniel Facey (alto sax) and Lewis Wright (vibes).SUN
SUN
Scot John Goldie started playing guitar at around sixSUN
years old, initially self-taught, gradually progressing toSUN
playing in rock and blues bands at around 12. Around thisSUN
time, he studied music theory and harmony with a localSUN
tutor and also became involved with the dance band scene.SUN
Whilst playing a function gig, John was spotted by theSUN
musical director of a visiting Motown act from the USA andSUN
asked to be guitarist on their next UK tour.SUN
SUN
London-based group Empirical have released theirSUN
highly-anticipated second album Out 'n' In, which paysSUN
tribute to the great saxophonist Eric Dolphy through nineSUN
Dolphy-inspired original compositions and two newSUN
arrangements of his work - Hat and Beard and Gazzelloni.SUN

Bernard Herrmann (1911-1975), Episode 1MON
Donald Macleod explores the life and work of BernardMON
Herrmann, best remembered for producing groundbreakingMON
scores for film directors, ranging from Orson Welles andMON
Alfred Hitchcock to Martin Scorsese. In his own eyes,MON
though, Herrmann saw himself simply as a 'composer',MON
rather than a film composer and his catalogue supportsMON
that claim, as it includes a full length opera, chamberMON
and symphonic music. A brilliant and complex character,MON
his formative years in New York helped establish a uniqueMON
approach to music.MON
MON
Donald focuses on Herrmann's early years, when, with hisMON
natural pushiness, coupled with a New York upbringing, heMON
became known among the movers and shakers in the musicMON
business. Through Aaron Copland's Young Composers' Group,MON
he first heard the music of Charles Ives, a composer forMON
whom he would have a lifelong enthusiasm.MON

A performance of two of Peter Maxwell Davies' mostTUE
important choral works.TUE
TUE
Westerlings imagines the early Norse settlers colonisingTUE
Orkney in the 8th century. In one of the most virtuosicTUE
works in the entire choral repertoire, George MackayTUE
Brown's poems are set alongside wordless seascapes,TUE
creating an enormously atmospheric piece which vividlyTUE
evokes the cold and wet and hardships endured by theTUE
settlers rowing their longboats across the waters fromTUE
Scandinavia. Sightings of whales and fish, waves andTUE
birds, culminate at landfall in a haunting setting of theTUE
Lord's Prayer, sung in the old Norse of ancient Orkney.TUE
TUE
This is followed by another piece with powerfully OrcadianTUE
roots - Solstice of Light, for chorus, organ and soloTUE
tenor - which sets more words by Brown, charting the wholeTUE
history of the Orkney archipelago. It begins as theTUE
islands first emerge from seas and ice, then describes theTUE
prehistoric builders of cairns and stone circles; theTUE
Celtic men and women who bring a religion of dance andTUE
light; Viking marauders who murder the islands' own saint,TUE
Magnus; and finally the story is brought into our ownTUE
times to those who would despoil the Orkneys in search ofTUE
oil, minerals and uranium.TUE

THU
We hear about Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, the founder ofTHU
futurism, visiting industrial cities including London inTHU
1912, urging artists to rally and embrace modernity. ItTHU
moved artists such as Jacob Epstein and Wyndham Lewis asTHU
well as the poet Ezra Pound to create significant worksTHU
celebrating industrialisation.THU
THU
Richard also talks to minimalist composer Michael NymanTHU

FRI
Herrmann was as complex as any of the characters in theFRI
films he wrote music for. His life was full ofFRI
contradictions and tensions that were never fullyFRI
resolved. He could be paranoid, irascible, abrasive andFRI
volatile but he remained a romantic at heart. He couldFRI
also be generous and compassionate but as a perfectionistFRI
in his chosen art was perhaps doomed never to be satisfied.FRI
