He SAT also talks to the team of musicians and scientists who are SAT exploring the subject of Alzheimer's disease in a new opera SAT and looks at the music and philosophy of American maverick SAT John Cage through the prism of his seminal piano piece SAT 4'33". Produced by Brian Jackson. SAT SAT Nigel Kennedy SAT SAT This week on Music Matters Tom Service meets virtuoso SAT violinist Nigel Kennedy. As Yehudi Menuhin's most famous SAT child protégé he studied first at the Menuhin School before SAT going on to the Juilliard in New York. His first recording SAT was Elgar's Violin Concerto (which sold in excess of 300,000 SAT copies) and his landmark recording of Vivaldi's Four Seasons SAT entered the Guinness Book of Records as the best-selling SAT classical work of all time. Now as Artistic Director of the SAT Polish Chamber Orchestra he has become essential to the SAT musical life of his adopted homeland and works closely with SAT some of the finest jazz and classical musicians there. SAT SAT As he prepares to bring a slice of Polish life to the SAT Southbank next weekend he talks to Tom about his life in SAT Krakow, his newly formed Orchestra of Life and of course, as SAT a passionate Aston Villa supporter, football. But is he more SAT of a Poland fan than an England fan these days…? SAT SAT The Lion's Face SAT SAT The Opera Group’s new production ‘The Lion’s Face’ tackles SAT one of the most challenging subjects possible for a new SAT opera – mental illness. Developed in partnership with the SAT Institute of Psychiatry, Kings College London it explores SAT the impact of dementia, specifically Alzheimer’s disease, SAT from the perspectives of patient, carer and research scientist. SAT SAT Tom visits the cast in rehearsal and talks to composer Elena SAT Langer about why opera is the best art-form to deal with SAT these issues, and to director John Fulljames about his SAT theatrical realisation of the patient’s existence. And Dr SAT Felicity Callard from the Institute of Psychiatry explains SAT how the production team worked to connect Alzheimer's SAT research with opera. SAT SAT 4’33” SAT SAT In his new book No Such Thing as Silence: John Cage’s 4’33”, SAT American musicologist Kyle Gann explores one of the most SAT notorious pieces of the twentieth century. Famously SAT consisting of 4 minutes and 33 seconds of silence (or rather SAT ambient noise) the piece has been subject to a variety of SAT interpretations – from an existential joke to an invitation SAT to open our ears to the world of sounds around us. SAT SAT Kyle Gann talks to Tom about the concept of composed SAT silence, Cage’s unique artistic outlook and creativity, and SAT the philosophical thinking behind the work’s 1952 premiere. SAT And pianist John Tilbury describes his experience of SAT performing Cage's silent piece to audiences whose reactions SAT range from embarrassment to reverence. SAT SAT Messiaen the Theologian SAT SAT Olivier Messiaen was one of the most devout composers in SAT musical history, and many of his pieces reveal their SAT liturgical inspiration even in their titles, from Vingt SAT Regards sur l’enfant Jesus for solo piano to his opera Saint SAT Francois d’Assise. His commitment to the church was also SAT fervently expressed in another part of his life: he was the SAT organist of the Church of La Trinité in Paris for more than SAT 60 years. A new book ‘Messiaen the Theologian’ explores the SAT extent to which music was ultimately a way of expressing the SAT composer’s faith. SAT SAT Tom travels to Paris to visit La Trinité and talks to Peter SAT Bannister, one of the book’s contributors, at the SAT Conservatoire where Messiaen taught. SAT SAT Earlier this week Messiaen’s widow the pianist Yvonne Loriod SAT died. She was his inspiration and muse for more than 50 SAT years. Composer George Benjamin, who was taught by both SAT Messiaen and his wife, pays tribute to her and explains how SAT the composer’s life and music would have been completely SAT different without the catalyst and support of Yvonne Loriod. In this SUN programme, bandleader and pianist Keith Nichols joins Alyn SUN Shipton to select the highlights of Oliver's recording SUN career, which spanned 1923 to 1931. His first discs featured SUN the young Louis Armstrong and he went on to be a pioneer of SUN big bands, as well as a specialist in muted blues playing. SUN SUN For Laurie Wright's 1987 biography of King Oliver, Keith SUN Nichols - who teaches jazz at the Royal Academy of music - SUN analysed every one of Oliver's many recordings, attempting SUN to identify exactly who was playing what - especially on the SUN records from the early days of acoustic recording when few SUN notes were taken at the time, and the musicians themselves SUN quickly forgot what sessions they had played on. So part of SUN this programme is detective work, identifying King Oliver's SUN playing in a variety of contexts. The rest is an SUN exhilarating tour through early jazz: from raunchy blues SUN vocals to close harmony singing; Louis Armstrong's first SUN solos on disc; and Oliver's talking trumpet, an effect he SUN perfected with his mastery of mutes, before his decline into SUN rural obscurity and an early grave in 1938. SUN SUN 22:15 Words and Music b00sbwvz (Listen) SUN Moonstruck SUN SUN Art Malik and Alexandra Gilbreath read poetry and prose that SUN explores our ancient and continuing fascination with the SUN moon, in various guises: as a symbol of purity, as a SUN capricious, changeable being, as an object to reach in the SUN imagination and through scientific exploration. With texts SUN by Ben Jonson, William Shakespeare, Charles Baudelaire, SUN Virginia Woolf and Sylvia Plath, and music from Mendelssohn, SUN Debussy, Schumann, Judy Garland, and Radiohead. SUN SUN Throughout history the heavens above us have been a source SUN of great fascination, and especially our closest neighbour, SUN the moon. It is a perpetual companion in our lives, central SUN to many myths, legends and religions, and it has provided SUN writers and musicians with a rich source of inspiration. The SUN Ancient Greeks allied the moon with Diana, goddess of the SUN hunt, who was seen as pure and chaste and celebrated for her SUN constancy, as invoked by Ben Jonson. SUN SUN The waxing and waning of the moon’s cycle give it another SUN character – that of a capricious being, changeable on a SUN whim, something that can interfere with human events, lives SUN and loves. Shakespeare explored this theme many times, SUN including in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, as haveVirginia SUN Woolf in Night and Day and Baudelaire, in his prose-poem, SUN The Gifts of the Moon. Musically, many composers have SUN linked the moon with affairs of the heart, and here we have SUN Dvorak’s Rusalka, Faure’s La lune blanche, and the show SUN tune, That old devil moon. SUN SUN The animal kingdom has not escaped the moon’s influence SUN either, and WB Yeats finds common traits between a cat and SUN the moon. Human transformation is a topic that needs SUN inclusion too – the superstition of vampires and werewolves SUN during a full moon has given rise to a whole genre of SUN melodramatic fiction, and to a colourful range of films. SUN SUN Britten’s Sea Interlude portrays the moon’s effects on the SUN water, leading on to the effects of the moon on personality. SUN The Greek philosopher Aristotle thought that the brain was SUN the ‘moistest’ organ in the body, and therefore highly SUN susceptible to the influence of the moon, thus linking the SUN moon with madness. Unfortunate ladies in the 19th century in SUN particular were portrayed as lunatics, and Percy Shelley SUN reflects this. SUN SUN Attitudes to the moon have changed with scientific SUN development. The telescope has brought it closer and its SUN surface has been examined and mapped out. Moon travel has SUN been explored in science fiction by Jules Verne and HG Wells SUN among others, but Cyrano de Bergerac got there earlier in SUN 1657, with his Voyage to the Moon, a satirical, and, at the SUN time, blasphemous story, which asks what would happen if the SUN moon was really the earth, and our earth was its moon, as SUN his intrepid explorer discovers. A century later Haydn uses SUN the idea of moon travel as the backdrop to a fanciful comic SUN opera, while the music of Ligeti was famously used by SUN Stanley Kubrick in his film 2001: A Space Odyssey. MON MON In May 1660 Charles II was invited to return to England and MON take the throne lost by his beheaded father. A dozen years MON of Puritan rule were overthrown with a resuming of vigorous MON cultural life. There was an ebullient outpouring of baroque MON music, liberated playwriting, scientific progress, stately MON architecture and courtly entertainment that became known as MON The Restoration. MON MON But in the 1660s how much was really "restored" of MON pre-Cromwellian Britain - and how much was actually newly MON introduced? How much that was restored had really never gone MON away? MON MON On the 350th anniversary of the King's return Professor MON Jonathan Sawday attempts to retell the story of the MON Restoration I in a new way - through five essays, each of MON which provide a shapshot of cultural and intellectual life. MON MON Caricatured as excessive in today's costume drama, this was MON a time that was also energetic, experimental and outward MON looking. From the foundation of the Royal Society, to the MON construction of St. Paul's, to the new contractual nature of MON government - this was a period which marks the creation of MON crucial aspects of modern Britain. They have been branded the "spiritual sons" of FRI Malian super-group Tinariwen, and tonight join Lopa Kothari FRI in session. Producer James Parkin FRI FRI Tamashek is the language of the Touareg, a nomadic people FRI inhabiting the Saharan desert across various countries, FRI including Niger, Algeria, Libya and Mali. The name Tamikrest FRI is Tamashek for junction or connection or coalition. The FRI seven members of Tamikrest, who originate from Mali, Niger FRI and Algeria, came together to express their Touareg identity FRI through Ishumar rock, the Touareg rebel music. FRI FRI The band's leader and songwriter, 27-year-old FRI singer/guitarist Ousmane Ag Mossa explains: "When Touareg FRI children arrive in the public Malian schools, they are soon FRI confronted with an administration that refuses to see the FRI realities our people suffer. Our hope is to have the world FRI listen to our revolutionary songs, which reflect the harsh FRI life conditions that our people endure." FRI FRI Tamikrest's songs also praise the desert, a place that is FRI fundamental for the Touareg. And it was in the silky dunes FRI of Essakane at the 2008 Festival of the Desert where they FRI met Dirtmusic, a group of rock'n'roll veterans from the USA FRI and Australia. With their tents side by side not only did FRI they share Touareg tea, but they also found themselves FRI jamming together and discovered that their ideas and music FRI fit perfectly. FRI FRI The two bands stayed in touch, and Dirtmusic later returned FRI to Mali to record their own album "BKO" which features FRI Tamikrest, Fadimata from Tartit as well as Lobi Traoré (to FRI be released in the spring of 2010).
