SAT SAT West Side Story SAT SAT Music Matters this week features the first ever public SAT broadcast of a discussion recorded between four giants of SAT 20th century American culture – the creators of West Side SAT Story. Composer Leonard Bernstein author Arthur Laurents SAT director and choreographer Jerome Robbins and lyricist SAT Stephen Sondheim came together to discuss the work in a 1985 SAT Dramatists Guild of America Symposium. SAT SAT Tom also talks to Nigel Simeone whose new book on West Side SAT Story explores the process of how the work evolved and looks SAT at the collaboration of these four huge personalities in SAT creating a show that has now had more than 40 000 SAT productions in the 53 years since its premiere. SAT SAT The Emerson Quartet SAT SAT Since it’s formation in 1976 the Emerson Quartet has SAT received critical acclaim winning nine Grammy Awards three SAT Gramophone Awards and the coveted Avery Fisher Prize. Their SAT most recent grammy was for a disc of Janacek’s string SAT quartets and they’ve just performed a series of concerts of SAT Czech repertoire in London. SAT SAT Tom met the quartet in rehearsal at the Queen Elizabeth SAT Hall. They explain to him how their internal dynamic drives SAT all of their work and how they’ve sustained 32 years SAT together in their current line-up. SAT SAT Samuel Barber Centenary SAT SAT The American composer Samuel Barber was born in Pennsylvania SAT on the 9th March 1910. Music Matters marks the centenary of SAT his birth with thoughts from the archive from fellow SAT composers Virgil Thomson Aaron Copland Gian Carlo Menotti SAT who was also Barber’s partner and librettist and John Adams. SAT Transcripts of the archive interviews are contained in a new SAT book – ‘Samuel Barber Remembered: A Centenary Tribute’. SAT SAT Tom talks to composer Jennifer Higdon who now teaches at the SAT Curtis Institute in Philadelphia (Barber’s alma mater) about SAT how his music inspires her to compose with her own voice. SAT SAT Fluid Piano SAT SAT Dulcimer virtuoso and design innovator Geoff Smith has SAT created a new instrument – the Fluid Piano an acoustic SAT instrument with a difference. The pitch of each note can be SAT changed whilst being played meaning the piano is no longer SAT restricted to the equal temperament of the Western scale. SAT SAT 13:00 The Early Music Show b00rjxwc (Listen) SAT Bach's St Mark Passion SAT SAT Catherine Bott presents a programme exploring JS Bach's SAT "phantom" setting of the St Mark Passion. According to the SAT catalogue of works in his obituary Bach composed five SAT Passions but only two works remain intact the justly SAT celebrated settings of the Passions by St Matthew and St SAT John. The first performance of the St Mark Passion was SAT probably given on Good Friday - March 23rd - in 1731 but a SAT score of the music has not survived. The text is all that SAT remains written by the poet Christian Friedrich Henrici or SAT "Picander" with whom Bach worked on the St Matthew Passion. SAT There is however a lot of evidence to suggest that Bach's SAT music from the passion exists in other forms notably in some SAT of Bach's Cantatas and so reconstructions of the Passion SAT have been made possible. Catherine Bott recalls the SAT background to Bach's lost work and plays music from 3 SAT different reconstructions; by Ton Koopman Simon Heighes and SAT from a new recording by Amacord and the Kölner Akademie SAT based on some 1964 detective work by Diethard Hellmann. SAT SAT The quartet was founded by the charismatic violinist Thomas SAT Zehetmair and unusually for a chamber ensemble they play SAT their whole repertoire from memory. The programme features SAT two works in which the composers were experimenting with the SAT string quartet. Bruckner wrote his C minor quartet as a SAT student but it was only rediscovered some decades after his SAT death. The composer's love of Bach and Schubert can be SAT traced in the writing. And there's a hint of Bach in the SAT Schumann Quartet as well which shows the fruits of SAT Schumann's recent study of the art of counterpoint in the SAT opening movement. SUN SUN Chopin composed his celebrated set of Preludes Opus 28 while SUN staying in Majorca with his lover the novelist George Sand. SUN One of his inspirations for the set was the keyboard music SUN of JS Bach especially Bach's celebrated cycle of Preludes SUN and Fugues - the "48". SUN SUN In this programme Stephen Johnson examines the ideas behind SUN Chopin's Preludes. Unlike Bach's prices these are not a SUN prelude to anything in particular so what did Chopin mean by SUN the title? Did the composer intend the cycle for performance SUN or are they didactic pieces intended to explore different SUN aspects of pianisim? Should the cycle be regarded as one SUN whole or treated as an anthology? Stephen is assisted in his SUN exploration by the pianist Lyr Williams who also performs SUN the Preludes. The programme was recorded before an audience SUN at the Turner Sims Concert Hall in Southampton. SUN SUN In addition to the Opus 28 Preludes Stephen Johnson also SUN examines the three other pieces for piano which Chopin SUN called Prelude. With the pianist Benjamin Frith he takes SUN apart the Prelude in C sharp minor Op45. A work that is SUN sometimes called the 25th Prelude.Through meticulous SUN examination of the piece Stephen offers an insight into SUN Chopin's compositional world examining his romantic style; SUN his harmonic and melodic invention; and his imaginative SUN exploitation of musical form. SUN SUN Until recently when girls and boys outgrew the children's SUN sections of bookshops and libraries they moved on - for SUN better or worse - to adult novels. This is no longer the SUN case. The Young Adult Fiction market made over £50 million SUN in the UK in 2009 an astonishing growth of 89% on the SUN previous year and while half of this was spent on Stephenie SUN Meyer's extraordinarily succesful Twilight series the genre SUN does now seem to have reached a critical mass. As well as SUN being a novelist and broadcaster Louise Doughty is also the SUN mother of a teenage daughter and for this very contemporary SUN edition of Radio Three's Sunday Feature she explores the SUN origins and appeal of the genre and asks what it tells us SUN about the lives of teenagers today. SUN SUN Louise's starting point is her own memory of reading the SUN final book of C.S.Lewis' Narnia series. In The Last Battle SUN Susan is exiled from Narnia because she no longer believes SUN and because she has become too interested in "lipstick and SUN nylons and invitations..." but if Lewis had no interest in SUN the teen years there have been ever since the 1950s a SUN growing number of writers for whom this readership is highly SUN appealing. SUN SUN Louise speaks to Richelle Mead author of the cult Vampire SUN Academy series to Patrick Ness Meg Rossoff and William SUN Nicholson all of them award-winning authors for children and SUN young people and she visits Crossley Heath School in Halifax SUN to hear from young adults themselves about what reading SUN means to them and about their likes and dislikes when it SUN comes to "A World Beyond Narnia.". SUN SUN 22:45 Words and Music b00rjy9t (Listen) SUN Intimate Letters SUN SUN Actors Christopher Eccleston and Olivia Hallinan read from a SUN selection of love letters - both real and fictional - by SUN Shakespeare Edith Wharton Emily Dickinson Ted Hughes Keats SUN and Oscar Wilde; including music by Couperin Wagner Kurt SUN Weill and Mozart. SUN SUN The art of letter writing belongs to an age before e-mails SUN and texts. They offer a fascinating snap-shot of a person’s SUN life with moments of insight and poetry emerging from a SUN background of domestic details and daily grind. Keats SUN writing effusively to girl-next-door Fanny Brawne displays SUN the typical insecurities of first love. One moment you SUN glimpse a phrase or thought which with a bit of polish could SUN find its way into one of his great sonnets the next he SUN reverts to trivia. In contrast the note from Ann Hamilton SUN and Barbara Villiers to Lord Chesterfield setting up an SUN assignation – is brief and to the point. SUN SUN Next come a group of letters from literature and SUN consequently written with more artifice and attention to SUN style. Les Liasons dangereuses was a scandalous epistolary SUN novel written during the age of Mozart. Like Mozart’s Don SUN Giovanni the Marquise de Merteuil is an amoral philanderer SUN so sated with sensual debauchery she needs the spur of SUN intrigue and deception to stimulate her jaded appetites. Her SUN letter to the Vicomte de Valmont setting out her plan for SUN him to deflower the virgin fiancée of a former lover betrays SUN the voyeuristic leerings of a monstrous erotomane. SUN SUN From the powdered wigs and rouged cheeks of 18th Century SUN Paris to the raw and gritty world of Ted Hughes whose SUN turbulent relationship with Sylvia Plath ended in her SUN suicide. Birthday Letters is a collection of poems he SUN addressed to her many years after her death. In the The Shot SUN Hughes tells daddy’s-girl Plath that after her father’s SUN death she put every man she met on a pedstal – “Ordinary SUN jocks became gods – Deified by your infatuation” SUN SUN After the letters of real people (Keats) the letters of SUN fictional people (Marquise de Merteuil) and the fictional SUN letters of real people (Hughes/Plath) the final category – SUN real letters of real people written to a much larger SUN audience than the addressee: Ninon de l’Enclos was a famous SUN 17th Century French courtesan. In later life she became SUN something of a sage and woman of letters. Her letters to the SUN young Marquis de Sevigné are a self-conscious disquisition SUN on the art of love. SUN SUN Ninon wasn’t the only peron to have written a letter with SUN half an eye on future publication. Oscar Wilde having SUN suffered public humilation and two years of imprisonment SUN finally took pen to paper and wrote a letter to Lord Alfred SUN Douglas his former lover and the ultimate cause of his fall SUN from grace. Its length and ambition stretch the normal SUN limits of letter-writting; in truth it is a wide-ranging SUN essay that details the biographical facts of their SUN relationship and opens out into philosophical speculation on SUN the nature of sensual pleasure renunciation and humility: a SUN Wagnerian brew of sex and religion. SUN SUN We end with a series of love letters which cover the SUN spectrum from ardent first stirrings to love grown cold. SUN SUN The novelist Edith Wharton confides to her sexually more SUN experienced younger lover that she is worried he has seen it SUN all before – using the striking image of a magic ship full SUN of “the old familiar red calico and beads of the clever SUN trader” SUN SUN Vita Sackville-West is self-dramatising and comic in her SUN needy appeal to the more reserved Virginia Woolf. SUN SUN Ted Hughes in the 2nd Birthday Letter remembers encountering SUN a fox-cub on Chalk Farm Bridge and in later life after the SUN death of Sylvia Plath he indentifies this as the moment he SUN failed the test of marriage. SUN SUN The sequence ends with the greatest letter in all opera. SUN Tchaikovsky’s Tatyana pours her heart out to the cynical and SUN world weary Eugene Onegin. She ends by asking the question SUN behind every love letter – “Who are you? My guardian angel SUN or my wily tempter?” SUN SUN Producer: Clive Portbury SUN SUN 00.00 SUN Chopin SUN Nocturne No 7 in C sharp minor Op 27/1 SUN Yundi (piano) SUN EMI60839121 SUN T7 SUN 00.05 SUN Keats: Letter to Fanny SUN Read by Christopher Eccleston SUN 04.35 SUN Ann Hamilton and Barbara Villiers to Lord Chesterfield SUN Read by Olivia Hallinan SUN 05.02 SUN Kander and Ebb SUN Cabaret/Two Ladies SUN Jonathan Pryce SUN National SO SUN John Owen Edwards SUN CDR1210 SUN T6 SUN 07.24 SUN Mozart SUN Don Giovanni Finale to Act 1 arranged for wind instruments SUN Ensemble Philidor SUN Supraphon 30182 SUN T12 SUN 07.34 SUN Choderlos de Laclos: Les Liasons dangereuses Letter 2 SUN Read by Olivia Hallinan SUN 12.21 SUN Hughes: Birthday Letters: The Shot SUN Read by Christopher Eccleston SUN 14.17 SUN My heart belongs to daddy SUN Eartha Kitt SUN MCA19120 SUN T7 SUN 17.03 SUN Couperin SUN La reine des coeurs from Book IV: 21-ieme Ordre SUN Angela Hewitt (piano) SUN Hyperion 67480 SUN T6 SUN 17.42 SUN Ninon de l’Enclos: Letter to the Marquis de Sevigne SUN Read by Olivia Hallinan SUN 20.27 SUN Mozart SUN Che soave from The Marriage of Figaro SUN Lucia Popp and Kiri Te Kanawa sopranos SUN LPO SUN Georg Solti SUN Decca 410150 SUN CD3 T3 SUN 23.11 SUN De profundis: Oscar Wilde SUN Read by Christopher Eccleston SUN 23.56 SUN Wagner SUN Prelude to Parsifal SUN BPO SUN Herbert von Karajan SUN Deutsche Grammophon 413348 SUN CD1 T1 SUN 38.08 SUN Edith Wharton to Morton Fullerton SUN Read by Olivia Hallinan SUN 39.20 SUN Kurt Weill SUN My ship SUN Dawn Upshaw (soprano) SUN Orchestra conducted by Eric Stern SUN Nonesuch 79345 SUN T11 SUN 41.45 SUN Vita Sackville-West: To Virginia Woolf SUN Read by Olivia Hallinan SUN 44.51 SUN Hughes: Birthday Letters: Epiphany SUN Read by Christopher Eccleston SUN 47.48 SUN Tchaikovsky SUN Letter writing scene (extract) from Eugene Onegin SUN Teresa Kubiak soprano SUN Orchestra of ROH Covent Garden SUN Georg Solti SUN Decca 417413 SUN CD1 T14-15 SUN SUN 23:45 Jazz Line-Up b00rjyb8 (Listen) SUN John Dankworth SUN SUN In 2005 Jazz Line-Up were invited to the Dankworth residence SUN in Wavendon to broadcast live from there annual garden part SUN event. The result is a fascinating retrospective of half a MON century of creativity with the artist himself as tour guide. MON Along the way he explodes a few myths about the inner MON workings of musical theatre. MON In the first of the week's programmes Sondheim talks about MON his childhood his parents' divorce his near-adoption by the MON Hammerstein family and his apprenticeship with Oscar MON Hammerstein the lyricist of Oklahoma! Then there's the MON rollercoaster ride of his early career: his first abortive MON Broadway show; two amazing breaks when he was commissioned MON to write the lyrics for first West Side Story then Gypsy; MON his unhappy collaboration with Richard Rogers; and his major MON creative breakthrough with Company a musical with situations MON and characters but no conventional plot and the first MON appearance of characteristic Sondheim subject-matter - the MON virtual impossibility of forming good relationships. The THU painting in question is Seurat's hugely famous A Sunday THU Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte and the work it THU inspired was the Pulitzer-prize-winning Sunday in the Park THU with George a deeply personal show about the joys and the THU costs of creation. The fairytales are the ones familiar to THU every child but in Into the Woods they are woven together in THU an extraordinarily intricate way before completely THU unravelling in the second act. Assassins caused a huge THU furore when it was unveiled in 1990 not least because it THU happened to coincide with the opening salvo of the first THU Gulf War Operation Desert Storm - under such circumstances a THU show that climaxed with the assassination of JFK was bound THU to be interpreted as deeply unpatriotic. Sondheim also talks THU about the logistics of mounting a Broadway production and THU the pleasures of "trancing out" during the creative process.
