SUN SUN 12:00 Private Passions b039bd1x (Listen) SUN Gillian Lynne SUN SUN Gillian Lynne is best known as the choreographer of Cats and SUN Phantom of the Opera, among other West End hits. She SUN received a lifetime Olivier Award earlier this year. But her SUN career began more than seven decades ago, when she was SUN spotted as a dancer by Ninette de Valois. She danced during SUN the War, with doodlebugs falling around her and just two SUN pianos in the pit - no orchestras, as all the men were away SUN fighting. She danced in the first night at Covent Garden SUN after the War, when audiences dusted off their evening SUN clothes. She then moved into movies, playing a gypsy SUN temptress in The Master of Ballantrae opposite Errol Flynn. SUN The sexual chemistry wasn't confined to the screen - she and SUN Flynn had an affair, though his drink problem meant 'He SUN wasn't a great lover. At the end of the day, he couldn't... SUN But he was a beautiful man.' SUN SUN As she developed as a choreographer, Gillian Lynne worked SUN with the leading composers of the day, including Sir Michael SUN Tippett. In fact she asked him to make changes in his Ritual SUN Dances (from The Midsummer Marriage) so it would become a SUN bit clearer what on earth was going on. 'I said to Colin SUN Davis, I don't know what this is about. But I think it's SUN about orgasms. He said, "Quite right, dear girl. Quite SUN right!"' SUN SUN Now 87, Lynne talks frankly about her career, and people she SUN has worked with, like Frederick Ashton and Dudley Moore. She SUN is still working - 'If I didn't I'd keel over' - and thanks SUN to her daily workout, she is still enviably fit. She tells SUN the story of finding love for the first time when she was in SUN her 50s - with a man 27 years younger than herself. She's SUN naughty, irreverent, and fun; this is also priceless social SUN history. SUN SUN Music choices include Fauré, Walton, Vaughan Williams, SUN Tippett and Errol Garner. TUE TUE By the time of his death in 2000, Comfort's 1972 sex manual TUE had sold over 12 million copies. It was one of the big, TUE mainstream best-sellers that made the liberalisation of TUE sexual mores an accepted part of British life. But at the TUE end of his life, Comfort regretted that the success of this TUE one book had obscured his rich range of work in other areas TUE - from poetry to gerontology, broadcasting to anarchism. In TUE this programme, Matthew Sweet argues that by forgetting who TUE this man really was, we've also lost sight of the true TUE influences that shaped his blockbuster book. TUE TUE Matthew begins in the childhood garden where, aged 15, TUE Comfort blew off four fingers making fireworks. Far from TUE letting the accident get in his way, he resolved to become a TUE writer, publishing the first of his many books while still TUE in his teens. Comfort became a pacifist and, during the TUE Second World War, he not only refused to fight but conducted TUE a controversial campaign against the bombing of German TUE cities. He argued publicly with George Orwell about the TUE right thing to do if the Nazis invaded. And he was also TUE ruled out of broadcasting on the wartime BBC - though that TUE didn't stop him becomnig a prolific broadcaster in the TUE 1960s. TUE TUE After the war, he was a leading anti-nuclear activist, at TUE one stage briefly going to prison over a planned protest. TUE Yet all the time he was formulating the ideas that form the TUE basis of The Joy of Sex, which have their roots in his TUE anarchism. An anarchist, he argued, was not a 'bomb-thrower' TUE but someone who resisted the power of those in authority and TUE insisted instead on personal responsibility. His early TUE factual writing on sex began as a talk for fellow-anarchists TUE in the late 1940s. And all the while, Comfort was pursuing a TUE separate scientific career as a gerontologist, helping to TUE pioneer the study of old age. Tragically, his own last years TUE were anything but the 'Good Age' he envisaged for others. TUE Yet, Matthew argues, almost all Comfort's varied labours TUE seem to stem from his drive to struggle against limits - TUE from the loss of his fingers to the power of the wartime TUE state, from sexual repression to the prejudice against the TUE old. Cast in, for choral music, the highly unusual TUE form of a theme and variations, it's laid out for choirs of TUE adult and treble voices. Brilliantly scored for its vocal TUE forces, it counts as one of the most original works in the TUE entire choral canon. In tonight's performance, the Temple TUE Church choristers are joined by the BBC Singers - the group TUE which gave the premiere of the work in 1934. This centenary TUE Proms tribute to Benjamin Britten is matched by one to TUE another composer born 100 years ago this year: George Lloyd, TUE whose Requiem was his final composition, composed in memory TUE of Diana, Princess of Wales, and tonight receiving its TUE London premiere. WED WED Manet first shocked the Paris salon in 1863 with his WED painting of a naked woman having a picnic with her friends WED in a glade on the Seine. Rejected by the formal exhibition WED it found its way to the Salon des Refuses, an invention of WED Napolean III in that very same year, but he was so put out WED by Le déjeuner sur l'herbe that he said it was "an offence WED against decency" - while the Empress Eugenie walked past, WED determinedly not looking. FRI FRI In a secret laboratory underneath the BBC archive there is a FRI small room containing a special machine. It's a BBC FRI prototype 'RP-1 Ethermatic remitter'. An experimental FRI machine designed to retrieve ('remit') past radio signals FRI back out of the air. Although partially successful during FRI field trials in 1922 it was never made fully FRI operational...until now. FRI FRI Will Self has been given access to the machine to FRI investigate the relationship between early radio technology FRI and modern culture. Taking his cue from the Wasteland and FRI Ulysses - both published as the RP-1 was developed - he will FRI be drawing from the air an assemblage of modernist art and FRI ideas using the very technologies that enabled them. In FRI doing so he hopes to create something that isn't simply FRI about modernism and its after effects but is itself a FRI modernist work. FRI FRI Around these Will has conducted a series of conversations at FRI the South Bank Centre and Brunel University with leading FRI cultural thinkers such as John Gray, John Carey and John FRI Mullan about the value and use of Modernist ideas now.
