Plus we SAT mark the anniversary of the death of Wagner. SAT SAT Producer Emma Bloxham. SAT SAT Conductor Simone Young has been Artistic Director of the SAT Hamburg State Opera and Music Director of the Hamburg SAT Philharmonic Orchestra since 2005. Having started her career SAT in her early twenties as a répétiteur at Opera Australia in SAT her hometown of Sydney, she now has an international SAT reputation as a conductor of Wagner, Bruckner and Mahler. SAT She has directed several complete Ring cycles and was the SAT first female conductor to conduct both the Vienna State SAT Opera and the Vienna Philharmonic. Ahead of two concerts SAT this week in Birmingham, Tom talks to Simone about her SAT future Wagnerian plans for Hamburg, why there aren’t more SAT female conductors, and in his centenary year, how Benjamin SAT Britten is perceived in Germany. SAT SAT Legendary conductor Arturo Toscanini conducted a total of 32 SAT concerts in London, from the early 1930s broadcasting many SAT performances with the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the Queens SAT Hall through to his final performance at the Royal Festival SAT Hall with the Philharmonia Orchestra in 1952. The impact of SAT his visits on British critics and audiences was such that SAT fans queued for as many as 3 nights to purchase tickets. In SAT the USA his career was dominated by his time at the New York SAT Philharmonic and the NBC Symphony Orchestra whose broadcasts SAT made him a household name. Two new books explore Toscanini’s SAT time in London, and his closest relationships with SAT colleagues in the US. Tom talks to writer Christopher Dyment SAT and conductor Cesare Civetta about their respective SAT publications. Plus there’s the chance to hear from some of SAT the NBC musicians who worked under the legendary maestro. SAT SAT Professor Adam Ockelford has devoted much of his career to SAT working with severely autistic children and enhancing their SAT capacity for musical expression and enjoyment. The children SAT he works with rarely speak, but communicate everything SAT through their playing. For them, music is a proxy SAT language. Tom talks to Professor Ockelford about his on SAT going work ahead of the publication of his book Music, SAT Language and Autism, and sits in on a session with 11 year SAT old Romy – who in everyday life is supposed to have no SAT ‘theory of mind’, yet communicates joyfully through music. SAT SAT On 13th February 1883 Richard Wagner died in a palatial SAT suite of rooms at the Palazzo Vendramin-Calergi on the Grand SAT Canal in Venice. He and his family had been in residence SAT there for the preceding five months, entertaining visitors SAT such as conductor Hermann Levi and composer Engelbert SAT Humperdinck as well as his father in law Franz Liszt. Wagner SAT was working on his last major project, an essay titled ‘On SAT the Feminine in the Human’ but was struggling to concentrate SAT and was losing patience with Venice. His daughter Daniela SAT wrote ‘we’re all looking forward to being back in Bayreuth SAT and to the summer, which we imagine will be glorious’. Tom SAT talks to Cosima Wagner biographer Oliver Hilmes about the SAT circumstances surrounding Wagner’s sudden death, and the SAT speculation that his fatal heart attack may have been caused SAT by a jealous row with his wife Cosima, on hearing that 23 SAT year old soprano Carrie Pringle had been invited to the SAT Palazzo… SAT SAT 13:00 The Early Music Show b01qkswk (Listen) SAT Jennens - Handel's librettist SAT SAT Catherine Bott visits the Handel House in London where Ruth SAT Smith has curated an imaginative exhibition on the life of SAT Handel's librettist, Charles Jennens. SAT It was Jennens who created the libretto for Handel's SAT Messiah, he might even have suggested the idea to Handel, SAT and he also furnished the composer with words for several SAT other of his oratorios including Saul, Belshazzar, L'Allegro SAT and perhaps Israel in Egypt. As such, Jennens often features SAT as a footnote in Handel's biography, but the academic and SAT author Ruth Smith believes more credit should be given to SAT Jennens for the contribution he made to 18th century SAT artistic life in this country. Not only did he provide SAT Handel with libretti, he was also one of the first to SAT faithfully edit the works of Shakespeare. SAT Ruth Smith has curated an exhibition about Jennens at the SAT Handel House in London and Catherine Bott visits and Dr SAT Smith to find out more about the man and his achievements. SUN There’s a secret Morse Code rendition of a poem and Hannah SUN Weiner’s extraordinary construction from the International SUN Code of Signals for the Use of All Nations. SUN SUN Emily Dickinson’s poem on the diminishing of mystery through SUN over examination is teamed with John Tavener’s The Hidden SUN Treasure SUN SUN Music has often been used to carry secret meanings: whether SUN as the means to crack a code or reference to a secret love. SUN Elgar’s Enigma Variations have been the subject of SUN speculation and the ciphered letter the composer sent to SUN Miss Dora Penney, the “Dorabella” of this variation, remains SUN unsolved whilst Schumann described his Carnaval as a kind of SUN game of deciphering. SUN SUN Oedipus is one of the first great unravellers of riddles in SUN literary history but even he may have found the Mad Hatter’s SUN offering something of a test: why is a raven like a writing SUN desk? SUN SUN The poems, Breath by Don Paterson and Ultrasound by SUN Kathleen Jamie deal with hidden mysteries of the body whilst SUN Actaeon suffers agonies for an inadvertent glimpse of the SUN divine Diana in her private glade. SUN SUN Edward Thomas and Arnold Bax herald the moment of spring’s SUN reveal and we move to things hidden in the sea and the SUN earth: the great Godzilla and Tennyson’s Kraken; Debussy’s SUN sunken Cathedral and its briny toll; U A Fanthorpe’s drowned SUN and razed villages whose traces are written into the SUN landscape and the imagined and animated voices of the long SUN buried. SUN SUN Secret love and longing is explored in the next section SUN whether John Clare’s hidden love, Ruth Pitter’s ardent self- SUN protection, the revelation of Pope Joan, or the ache for SUN transformation. SUN SUN We finish with Auden’s plangent dive into the gossip and SUN whispers and Peggy Lee’s glorious and gladdening shrugging SUN off of disappointment at the discovery of life’s surface SUN holding few hidden depths. SUN SUN The Devil is blue, pot-bellied, seated on a languorous green SUN serpent, and is three-quarters through a hearty meal of SUN haunch-of-human. Around him, men hang from gibbets or spew SUN from the three tongues of red fire which are the rivers of SUN Hell. For the medieval master Giotto, sin had a very real SUN form. And for the faithful who came to worship with Enrico SUN di Scrovegni in his chapel in Padua in northern Italy, the SUN price of human error, was firmly rammed home by the vast SUN glowing fresco that met their gaze as they left the chapel SUN to go back out into the vice-filled medieval city. Scrovegni SUN too had sin very firmly on his mind, because the chapel he SUN built was his family penance for the sin of usury of which SUN they stood accused. SUN SUN From primitive man, through the development of notions of SUN indulgence, guilt and retribution, to the full force of SUN medieval tormented souls and Dante's circles of Hell, Rev. SUN Richard Coles explores the ideas of sin and atonement. SUN SUN 'Sin' is a Christian concept, yet to what extent are the SUN essential elements that constitute it - error and disorder - SUN equally essential parts of other world religions, SUN underpinning populations with very different belief systems SUN in cultures from Asia to the Americas? SUN SUN In this first programme, Richard explores what exactly is SUN meant by sin, and its origins in man's earliest ethical SUN structures. And he travels to Italy to discuss some of the SUN world's most graphic illustrations of the consequences of SUN sin and wrongdoing - in Siena's depictions of the satanic SUN figure of Tyranny and Giotto's extraordinary frescoed Last SUN Judgement in Padua. SUN When John Updike's mother was asked whether she was proud of SUN her son's acclaim, she replied, "I'd rather it had been me." SUN Updike said that one of his earliest memories was seeing his SUN mother at her writing desk. He wrote many stories about his SUN mother and mothers in general, almost all isolated by their SUN intelligence and sensitivity, which their sons both love and SUN fear. Replete with tension, they mirror the journey all SUN children must make from love to separation to attempts at SUN coexistence and back to love. But the stories are always SUN about the son's journey, as though the mother has gone SUN nowhere. But what of Mrs. Updike's journey? SUN This play brings Updike and his mother together as Updike SUN struggles with another failed marriage. SUN He comes home to his mother, expecting support and sympathy, SUN to discover for the first time that his mother is a person SUN too, with hopes and fears and disappointments he had never SUN seen. His mother challenges him: can he love anyone whom he SUN does not see merely as an extension of himself? SUN And, if he can't, what kind of writer, what kind of man, SUN does that make him?
