They gave the first ever SAT concert in the Royal Albert Hall, they raised the equivalent SAT of millions of pounds for charity through their performances SAT - and they really put the professionals' backs up. SAT SAT And if their name seems familiar, you're probably thinking SAT of the Gilbert & Sullivan song 'A wandering minstrel I' from SAT The Mikado. No, the orchestra didn't name themselves after SAT the song: the song was a tongue-in-cheek homage to the SAT then-famous orchestra. Sullivan was good mates with the SAT orchestra's founder, Seymour Egerton (later the Fourth Earl SAT of Wilton), and Nanki-Poo, who sings the song, is - like the SAT orchestra's players - a member of the nobility roughing it SAT as an itinerant musician. (extract), reader Andrew Wincott SUN SUN Producer's Note SUN “Ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.? With these SUN words the serpent tempts Eve to eat from the Tree of SUN Knowledge, thereby bringing Evil into the world. The Adam SUN and Eve story in Genesis, like all great myths, can be read SUN in several ways, and is powerful precisely because of its SUN ambiguity. It certainly suggests that Evil is not only SUN connected with desire but also in some way with man’s SUN striving for knowledge – possibly because acquisition of SUN knowledge can lead us away from the awareness of our true SUN essence and Being. SUN SUN The excerpt from Haydn’s Creation gives the back story, SUN with God creating light in a blaze of C major. Enter the SUN wily serpent. As he tempts Eve, the excerpt from SUN Tartini’s ‘Devil’s Trill Sonata’ gives us a clue as SUN to the real identity of this talking snake. SUN SUN In Milton’s ‘Paradise Lost’ the snake is a master SUN politician and orator and his subtle and sinuous reasoning SUN leads Eve imperceptibly into temptation and catastrophe. SUN SUN The story of the Fall has often led to a mistaken conflation SUN of sex, particularly female sexuality, with Evil. SUN SUN In Alban Berg’s ‘Lulu’, the anti-heroine is an immoral SUN temptress explicitly related to the biblical Eve. SUN SUN Baudelaire and Swinburne give contrasting portraits of two SUN femmes fatales, vampire and dominatrix, evil in their cold SUN and rapacious lust. SUN SUN Influenced by the ideas of Freud, Strauss’s librettist SUN Hugo von Hofmannsthal saw evil in terms of mental health. SUN In the opera, the confrontation between Klytemnestra and her SUN daughter Elektra is a psychological study of neurosis. SUN Klytemnestra’s diseased mind is what makes her evil. And SUN this is represented by increasingly chromatic harmonies SUN which Strauss contrasts with more “healthy? tonal music SUN elsewhere in the score. As she describes her nightmare, the SUN tuba slithers around in the bass representing the repressed SUN fears stalking her subconscious. SUN SUN Male evil is often seen in terms of black magic and the SUN occult. The Black Sabbath track with its diabolic tritones SUN and thunder effects verges on camp. But it matches Aleister SUN Crowley’s over-the-top ‘Hymn to Lucifer’ which leads SUN into Faust’s final encounter with Lucifer in Marlowe’s SUN ‘Dr Faustus’, as Faustus is dragged down to hell. The SUN Toccata from Boellmann’s suite continues the gothic mood. SUN SUN The Devil-music from George Crumb’s ‘Black Angels’ SUN abruptly changes gear for Blake’s apocalyptic ‘Marriage SUN of Heaven and Hell’. This segues into Verdi’s blazing SUN trumpets announcing a vision of Hell which is taken up in an SUN extract from Dante’s ‘Inferno’. (Liszt’s ‘Dante SUN Sonata’ again starts with infernal tritones – the SUN traditional sign of the Devil in Western music.) SUN SUN The forest as a place of mystery and evil was one of the SUN tropes of the German imagination. It features in many of the SUN folk tales from the Brothers Grimm, and further back in the SUN Anglo-Saxon epic ‘Beowulf’. And no one captured that SUN sense of malevolence better than Wagner whose prelude to the SUN second Act of ‘Siegfried’ conjures up the dark forest SUN where the evil dragon lives (tritones again). SUN SUN The final section looks at Evil as a matter of personal SUN morality; something encountered everyday behind the mask of SUN civilisation. The urbane anti-hero of Shakespeare’s SUN ‘Richard III’, plots and counterfeits behind the scenes. SUN His is the cloven hoof on the carpet. SUN SUN St Augustine’s self-lacerating account of his lustful SUN youth is again a private matter of free-will. SUN SUN I make no apology for a second bit of Wagner, for whom Evil SUN was a specialist subject. The extract from ‘Parsifal’ SUN describes the tortured cravings of the magician Klingsor who SUN has castrated himself in a desperate bid to get control over SUN his evil and insatiable desires. SUN SUN The programme ends with another master of the subject. SUN Benjamin Britten knew that Evil is at its most evil when it SUN sets out to destroy goodness and innocence, which is the SUN theme of Blake’s ‘O Rose thou art sick’ and also SUN Auden’s meditation on the mundane nature of Evil. SUN SUN Clive Portbury (producer) SUN SUN 19:30 BBC Proms b01m0n00 (Listen) SUN 2012 Season, Prom 49, The Yeomen of the Guard - Act 1 SUN SUN Live from the Royal Albert Hall, London SUN SUN Gilbert and Sullivan: The Yeomen of the Guard SUN SUN Gilbert and Sullivan's richest and most emotionally engaging SUN operetta set at the Tower of London in the 16th Century, is SUN considered by many to be Sullivan's finest musical score. It's basic plot, of an apprentice being FRI taken from the workhouse and fatally mistreated, is FRI unchanged. FRI FRI This brilliant, if bleak song was collected in Kings Lynn FRI from the fisherman James Carter by Ralph Vaughan Williams FRI and is still sung by folk singers. But the song dates back FRI to at least the 18th Century and has travelled widely. FRI FRI First staged a month after VE Day, 'Peter Grimes', Britten's FRI searing psychological drama set in a claustrophobic Suffolk FRI fishing community was a critical and popular success which FRI established a new kind of English operatic tradition. It was FRI based loosely on Britten's own hometown, Aldeburgh, on the FRI East Coast of England. It's a coast Simon Barnes knows well, FRI with its shifting shingle beaches, sandling heaths and FRI wide-open skies, echoing with the sounds of redshank and FRI curlew. Here Barnes writes in praise of the landscape he's FRI inhabited for the past few decades - a wild, rich, noisy FRI coast, ever-changing and volatile - which can be heard FRI throughout Britten's music. FRI FRI Writer: Simon Barnes is the multi-award-winning chief FRI sportswriter at The Times. He also writes a Saturday column FRI on wildlife. His 18 books include three novels and the FRI best-selling How To Be A Bad Birdwatcher. He lives in East FRI Anglia with his family and five horses FRI FRI Producer: Justine Willett. FRI FRI For this series, five writers of different ages and FRI background have recalled the rite of passage entailed in FRI setting off for a month's travel with nothing but a rucksack FRI and an Inter-Rail Pass. Meanwhile, David Almond - amongst FRI the most popular and thoughtful writers for children today - FRI recalls his parallel experience: FRI FRI "We hitch-hiked instead, and travelled three summers in a FRI row from Tyneside to Greece, and tried to look down at those FRI who travelled on pre-planned routes in Inter-rail comfort... FRI They were wonderful journeys. But many times, of course - FRI stuck for a couple of freezing nights on a roundabout FRI outside Paris, recovering from a truck crash in Italy, FRI trudging half-starved and penniless across Belgrade with FRI hundreds and hundreds of miles still to go, or simply FRI travelling for hundreds of miles through baking heat with FRI very weird drivers - we lamented the fact that we hadn't FRI stumped up £26 to be part of the Inter-rail adventure".
