He also talks to SAT Dutch composer Michel van der Aa about his multi-media opera SAT set in the waiting room of heaven "After Life", and reviews SAT Christopher Page's new book "The Christian West and its SAT Singers" which charts music in the first millenium since the SAT birth of Christ. Produced by Brian Jackson. SAT SAT The Christian West and its Singers SAT SAT In Music Matters this week Tom Service delves into an SAT ambitious and monumental new book by musicologist Christopher Page. SAT SAT The Christian West and its Singers: The First Thousand Years SAT tells the story of that part of musical history which is SAT terra incognita for most histories – the centuries before SAT music was written down for posterity. It ranges from the New SAT Testament period to twelfth-century Europe when churches, SAT hospitals and monasteries shared a body of vocal music, SAT including Gregorian Chant. The history of the singers who SAT performed it is placed against the social, political and SAT economic life of a Western Europe slowly being remade after SAT the collapse of Roman power. SAT SAT Christopher explains to Tom the challenges he faced in SAT writing about a music that’s to all intents and purposes SAT silent, and Tess Knighton and the Rev Richard Coles join Tom SAT to review the book. SAT SAT Vespers 1610 SAT SAT This year marks the 400th anniversary of Claudio SAT Monteverdi’s famous Vespers of 1610. Published initially as SAT a collection of individual pieces, some with instruments and SAT some without, mixing secular styles with sacred forms, and SAT using every technical device Monteverdi had at his disposal, SAT the Vespers are an exercise in compositional virtuosity. SAT But were they composed for his employers at Mantua, for the SAT Pope in Rome or for the Basilica of St Mark’s in Venice? And SAT are the Vespers singular or plural – do they make a single SAT coherent work or are they really a liturgical compilation? SAT SAT Tom meets three great Vespers interpreters all with their SAT own distinctive views - conductors John Eliot Gardiner, SAT Andrew Parrott, and Paul McCreesh. SAT SAT Michel van der Aa SAT SAT If you had to choose one moment from your life to re-live SAT for eternity, what would it be? That’s the teasing SAT existential question at the heart of Dutch composer Michel SAT van der Aa’s opera After Life, based on the film by Japanese SAT director Hirokazu Kore-Eda. SAT SAT Having completed his training as a recording engineer at the SAT Royal Conservatory in The Hague, van der Aa studied SAT composition with Louis Andriessen, and film directing at the SAT New York Film Academy. One of the most technologically SAT gifted composers around his imaginative music theatre works SAT have received international critical and public acclaim. SAT SAT Michel talks to Tom about the role of film in his work and SAT the way it says things which music can’t. And he reveals SAT what his own eternal moment would be… SAT SAT 13:00 The Early Music Show b00s9fz7 (Listen) SAT Halley's Comet SAT SAT Lucie Skeaping explores the music which accompanied the SAT return of Halley's Comet to our skies between 1066 and 1759, SAT and examines both contemporary accounts of its passing and SAT artistic representations of the comet in that period. SAT SAT The Festival is literally on the Niger, as the performers SAT play from a barge that floats on this great African river. SAT It was started three years ago to promote culture and SAT tourism in that region, to try and tempt travellers on their SAT way to Timbuktu to stop in Segou for a while. The artist SAT line-up is a mix of internationally known Malian artists SAT such as Afel Bocoum from Niafunke, and artists who are SAT popular in Mali but less well known outside. SAT SAT Afel Bocoum was a musician in the band of the great Ali SAT Farka Toure, and many see him as continuing Ali's tradition. SAT He performs a song especially for the programme, and talks SAT about life in rural Niafunke. Neba Solo is a virtuoso SAT balafon player, who has formed a band which works up a storm SAT with three balafons plus percussion,. Mangala Camara made SAT his name as a lead singer with artists such as Toumani SAT Diabate, and has now started a solo career which has already SAT had a hit: his song 'Minye Minye', which was intended as a SAT critique of politics, was adopted by Mali's President as his SAT campaign song. SUN SUN 22:15 Words and Music b00s9g6b (Listen) SUN Take Me to the River SUN SUN For this week’s Words and Music the theme is the river – SUN from its source to the sea. The programme begins with ‘The SUN Wind in the Willows’, a passage about the joys of sailing SUN down an English river. The pastoral theme is heard too in SUN John Clare’s ‘The Ford’ and Alice Oswald’s ‘River’. But SUN rivers play a vital part in industry, something the Russian SUN poet Osip Mandelstam explores in ‘The Factories Bathing on SUN the Moscow River’, heard alongside Mussorsky’s ‘Prelude to SUN Kovanshchina, Dawn on the Moscow River’. The consequences of SUN industrialisation and pollution are explored by Ted Hughes SUN in ‘If’. Hughes was an active campaigner for the environment SUN – as a passionate fisherman he was extremely disturbed at SUN the pollution in the rivers he knew so well. With ‘If’ SUN you’ll hear Randy Newman’s ‘Louisiana 1927’, a song about SUN the floods which left hundreds of thousands homeless. A SUN story about the state being battered by nature and abandoned SUN to its fate by its government resonated with Americans in SUN the wake of Hurricane Katrina and perhaps will again as the SUN oil slick reaches the coast of Louisiana and the Gulf of SUN Mexico. ‘Take me to the River’ ends with a poem by the SUN Cornish poet Charles Causley, written at the very end of his SUN life, in which his dead parents beckon to him across the SUN stream that divides them and ‘Low Water’ from Sally SUN Beamish’s ‘The River Cello Concerto’. MON MON 12:00 Composer of the Week b00sbb2c (Listen) MON Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827), 1803 MON MON Aside from his music, Beethoven is perhaps best known for MON his devastating loss of hearing and infamous love life. MON Donald Macleod examines how this complex man was affected by MON such crises, set against the backdrop of the turbulent years MON through which he lived. In each episode Donald concentrates MON on the music and events in and around one significant year, MON beginning in 1803. MON MON By then, aged 33, Beethoven's hearing had already begun to MON deteriorate and the previous year he wrote of his despair MON and thoughts of suicide. It marked a change in his music and MON a new 'heroic style' emerged, reflected in the virtuosic MON Waldstein Sonata and in the Eroica Symphony, originally MON written in Napoleon's honour. In the second programme, MON Donald reflects on 1809, the year Napoleon invaded Vienna. MON We'll hear from the Les Adieux Piano Sonata and majestic MON Emperor Piano Concerto, both of which Beethoven wrote for MON his friend and patron, Archduke Rudolph. MON MON Beethoven had numerous amorous encounters over the years, MON but things came to a head in 1812. That year he wrote a love MON letter to his 'Immortal Beloved' whose identity has given MON rise to endless speculation. In the third programme Donald MON introduces songs written for the woman thought to be the MON intended recipient, Antonie Brentano, and ends the programme MON with the final major work of that year, his 8th symphony. MON MON Beethoven's only opera Fidelio is one of the most intense MON and moving of all music dramas, a celebration of the triumph MON of the human spirit over adversity, and it forms the focus MON of the fourth programme. In the fifth and final programme, MON Donald looks at 1822. The increasingly reclusive composer MON wrote his last piano sonata that year and his Handelian MON overture The Consecration of the House. But his greatest MON project, which took some five years to complete, was the MON Missa Solemnis, his largest choral work and for Beethoven, MON the supreme challenge of his life.
