Yet there isSATanother side to the life of an orchestral player, withSATperformance anxiety, the pressure to maintain standardsSATand a precarious employment situation as a freelancerSAT(which most British orchestral players are) all adding upSATto a potentially stressful existence.SATSATLiz Gardiner is a violinist, now working as a musicSATtherapist, who stopped playing professionally partly dueSATto stress - she tells her story, and Tom discusses theSATissues with psychologist Carol Chapman and StephenSATMaddock, Chief Executive of the City of BirminghamSATSymphony Orchestra.SATSATCambridge at 800SATSATIt is 800 years since a group of disaffected monks fromSATOxford set up what would become the University ofSATCambridge on a marsh in East Anglia. Strikingly, he putSUNmoney into South Sea stock in 1716 when prices were lowSUNand had sold up by 1720 when the South Sea credit bubbleSUNburst in one of the great financial cataclysms in fiscalSUNhistory. Many others lost fortunes, including Sir IsaacSUNNewton, warden of the Royal Mint. The composer profitedSUNhandsomely and, while others shied away from theSUNuncertainties of speculation, he continued to investSUNthroughout his life. From 1744 Handel's investments justSUNgrew and grew.SUNSUNTalking to Handel experts and financial historians, PeterSUNDay enters the tough economics of 18th-centurySUNmusic-making and visits the Bank of England to see theSUNcomposer's extravagant signature on numerous ledgers as heSUNtraded annuities.SUNSUN22:45 Words and Music b00jkt31 (Listen)SUNHandel's DivasSUNSUNGeraldine James and Michael Maloney read extracts fromSUNjournals, newspapers, letters and poetry of Handel's timeSUNabout the highs and lows of opera and oratorioSUNperformances in London. These are interspersed with musicSUNby the composer himself.SUNSUNIn his London operas, Handel provided vehicles for theSUNmost famous singers, mostly brought over from Italy. TheSUNinfamous rivalries between singers such as Senesino,SUNCuzzoni and Faustina were played out in public.SUNSUNOpera in London during the 18th century was much talkedSUNabout, and there is a wealth of material from which toSUNchoose which highlights differing opinions, anecdotes andSUNaccounts of the activities of all those involved in theirSUNperformance, composition and production. It is a rich seamSUNto be mined, but in the end I decided to focus on aSUNparticular time in Handel's life in London. The RoyalSUNAcademy of Music was founded in 1719 to establish regularSUNseasons of Italianate opera seria in London, and HandelSUNprovided vehicles for the most famous singers, mostlySUNbrought over from Italy.SUNSUNThe programme begins with an observation from the famousSUNmusical historian and commentator - Charles Burney -SUNwho knew and admired Handel. He gives a clear picture ofSUNthe personality of Handel - a little impatient perhapsSUNand prone to say what he thought, but not at allSUNmalicious. Ironic, therefore, that he had to endure theSUNpetty squabblings of his opera singers.SUNSUNThe opening music I think reflects the gentler side of theSUNcomposer with a beautiful interpretation of his trioSUNsonata for flute and violin.SUNSUNLongfellow's poem about the three singers sets the toneSUNfor the rest of the programme - the idea that singersSUNworking together can create wonderful harmony, but warnsSUNof the inevitable discord which can arise from jealousySUNand competition.SUNSUNRinaldo pre-dates the Royal Academy but was the first ofSUNHandel's London operas. Contemporary writing from JohnSUNGay (famous for his 'Beggar's Opera') and the authorSUNDaniel Defoe highlight the obsession at that time withSUNopera, and in particular some of the singers. One of theSUNmost famous was the castrato Francesco Bernadi, otherwiseSUNknown as Senesino (a nickname inspired by his birth placeSUN- Sienna). He enjoyed enormous success during his staySUNin London but was a difficult character by all accounts.SUNYet he had a superb voice, and in the recording of VaSUNTacito e nascosto (from Giulio Cesare in Egito)[SilentlySUNand stealthily the cunning hunter moves] David Daniels'sSUNalmost womanly countertenor voice I think is probably oneSUNof the closest ideas we will ever have as to what a realSUNcastrato may have sounded like.SUNSUNItalian singers were not always received well, with theSUNinevitable xenophobia in some publications, which could beSUNquite acerbic at times. They were hugely popular, though,SUNand it was not long before more arrived and delighted moreSUNand more admirers. You can almost hear the baying crowdsSUNin A Legend of the Haymarket, Richard Barham'sSUNboisterous poem about the public demand for theirSUNfavourite singer.SUNSUNThe next darling of the opera stage to arrive from ItalySUNwas Francesca Cuzzoni. Her debut was in Ottone, and theSUNaria Falsa imagine [false picture] became a big hit withSUNaudiences. Cuzzoni was apparently no great beauty, but sheSUNwon the hearts of all with her voice. Robert Leighton'sSUNenraptured poem is in fact about a singer from a centurySUNlater, also famous for singing Handel, but aptly reflectsSUNthe reactions of the time for Cuzzoni.SUNSUNA short while after Cuzzoni, along came Faustina BordoniSUNwho became just as popular. The duet Placa l'alma,SUNquieta il petto! (from Alessandro) [bid the soul rest, andSUNstill thy breast] was written specifically for these twoSUNdivas to show off their talents, and it was not longSUNbefore there was a debate as to who was the better. TheSUNrivalry was infamous and the hostility between the twoSUNwomen was so great that they actually came to blows onSUNstage during an opera by Handel's own rival - Bononcini.SUNThe incident caused great offence to the Princess ofSUNWales, who was present, and brought the season to anSUNabrupt end.SUNSUNThe satirical writing of the time is cruel, harsh andSUNsometimes very funny at the singers' expense. ASUNfavourite device was to create scenes and letters,SUNanonymously written and published in pamphlets, purportingSUNto be the thoughts and words of the singers themselves.SUNSUNThe stormy aria Furie terribili [fearful furies] fromSUNRinaldo dates from before the furore, but aptly reflectsSUNthe turbulence with its astonishing thunder effects, whichSUNthe original production would have had, special effectsSUNbeing very much in vogue at the time.SUNSUNEventually, things calmed down, singers moved on, and theSUNRoyal Academy was restructured. Handel continued writingSUNsmash hit operas, but eventually, in 1742, The Messiah wasSUNto open up a whole new area of Handel's music toSUNaudiences - the oratorio.SUNSUNMeanwhile, the delightfully gossipy correspondence of MrsSUNPendarves gives us a real insight into the thoughts andSUNactivities of these music lovers and her warm account ofSUNMr Handel playing to her guests creates an intimateSUNpicture of 18th century home entertainment. The HarmoniousSUNBlacksmith remains one of Handel's most popular keyboardSUNpieces to this day, and I can just imagine his friendsSUNrequesting that he play it to them whilst they drink theirSUN'white mulled wine'.SUNSUNFinally, Ben Jonson's The musical strife; in a pastoralSUNdialogue brings back the theme of competing singers, butSUNconcludes (in just the same manner that Longfellow did atSUNthe beginning of the programme), that true harmony isSUNachieved by striving together rather than against eachSUNother. And what better way to demonstrate this than withSUNone of Handel's most popular and exquisite pieces of allSUN- the duet As steals the morn upon the night (fromSUNL'Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato) whichSUNessentially advocates the motto 'moderation in allSUNthings'!SUNSUNProducer Helen GarrisonSUNSUNRunning OrderSUNSUNGJ = Geraldine James MM = Michael MaloneySUNSUN00:00:00SUNCharles Burney: Extract from An Account of the MusicalSUNPerformances...in Commemoration of Handel (MM)SUN00:00:27SUNHandel: Trio sonata (Op.2`1) in B minor [HWV.386] (LargoSUNand Allegro) Accademia Bizantina/Ottavio DantoneSUNHarmonia Mundi HMC 901957 Tracks 14-15SUN00:05:04SUNHenry Wadsworth Longfellow: The Singers (GJ)SUN00:06:23SUNHandel: Overture to RinaldoSUNThe Academy of Ancient Music/Christopher HogwoodSUNDecca 467 087-2 CD 1 Track 1SUN00:07:28SUNUnknown author, possibly Daniel Defoe: Extract from aSUNletter to the Weekly Journal, 18th December 1725 (MM)SUN00:08:44SUNJohn Gay: Extract from letter to Jonathan Swift, 1722-3SUN(MM)SUN00:10:05SUNJoseph Mitchell: Ode on the Power of Musick (MM)SUN00:10:20SUNHandel: Va Tacito e nascosto (from Giulio Cesare in Egito)SUNDavid Daniels (countertenor - Giulio Cesare)SUNRoger Montgomery (horn)SUNOrchestra of the Age of Enlightenment/Sir Roger NorringtonSUNVirgin VC 5 45326 2 Track 3SUN00:16:19SUNUnknown author: Faustina: or the Roman Songstress, ASUNSatyr, on the Luxury and Effeminacy of the Age (MM)SUN00:16:44SUNAnne Penny: Addressed to David Garrick, Esq; on Seeing theSUNOpera of Daphne and Amyntor (GJ)SUN00:18:16SUNRichard Barham: A Legend of the Haymarket (MM)SUN00:19:29SUNExtract from the British Journal, 29th December 1722 (GJ)SUN00:19:41SUNHandel: Falsa imagine (from Ottone Re di Germania)SUNClaron McFadden (soprano - Teofane)SUNThe King's Consort/Robert King Hyperion CDA66751/3SUNCD 1 Track 8SUN00:21:46SUNRobert Leighton: Jenny Lind (MM)SUN00:22:50SUNMary Wollstonecraft Shelley: Oh listen while I sing toSUNthee (GJ)SUN00:25:18SUNExtract from The London Journal, 30th March 1723 (GJ)SUN00:26:15SUNUnknown author: Faustina: or the Roman Songstress, ASUNSatyr, on the Luxury and Effeminacy of the Age (MM)SUN00:26:46SUNMrs Pendarves to her sister, Miss Anne Granville, 22ndSUNAugust 1725 (GJ)SUN00:27:10SUNHandel: La speranza e giunta in porto (from Ottone Re diSUNGermania) Jennifer Smith (soprano - Gismonda)SUNThe King's Consort/Robert King Hyperion CDA66751/3SUNCD 1 Track 4SUN00:28:31SUNExtract from The London Journal, 4th September 1725 (GJ)SUN00:28:51SUNHandel: Placa l'alma, quieta il petto!
