But what about the ones that got away? There are great SAT cellists who, over time, have faded from public SAT consciousness - until now. In this compelling feature, SAT Julian Lloyd Webber reveals four forgotten 'heroes' who SAT helped to shape his own destiny as one of the foremost SAT cellists of his generation. SAT SAT As an instrument the cello has never been more popular and SAT the level of playing, never better. From humble beginnings SAT the cello is now an established solo instrument that any SAT present-day composer would want to write for. In this - his SAT sixtieth birthday year - one of today's most renowned solo SAT cellists, Julian Lloyd Webber, not only tells the story of SAT his cellist heroes, but introduces rare and relatively SAT unheard recordings. He'll tell the story of the cellists SAT themselves, explore how they have inspired him, and look at SAT how the art and style of the cellist has changed through the SAT centuries. SAT SAT 1) Felix Salmond (1888 - 1952). A marvellous cellist whose SAT career was overshadowed by the disastrous first performance SAT of Elgar's Cello Concerto in which he was the soloist. SAT Although no-one laid the blame on him (the problem was with SAT the under-rehearsed orchestra) his career (and his SAT confidence) suffered and he fled to America where he SAT embarked on a very distinguished teaching career which SAT produced some of the finest players of modern times. SAT SAT 2) Milos Sadlo (1912 - 2003). Everyone thinks that it was SAT Rostropovich who re-introduced the long lost Haydn C major SAT Concerto to the world after it was rediscovered in Prague in SAT 1961. But it was Milos Sadlo - a fabulous cellist with a SAT wide discography. SAT SAT 3) Antonio Janigro (1918 -1989). The Italian cellist Antonio SAT Janigro was a prolific recording artist. When war broke out SAT in 1939 he found himself trapped in Zagreb where he was on SAT holiday, and was forced to remain there. Luckily he was SAT offered a professorship at Zagreb Conservatory and he SAT eventually formed the widely recorded I Soloisti di Zagreb SAT which he both conducted and played with as a cello soloist. SAT SAT 4) Leonard Rose (1918-1984). An American cellist who not SAT only enjoyed a distinguished recording career but went on to SAT be one of the world's leading pedagogues, counting Yo Yo Mar SAT and Lynn Harrell among his pupils. SAT SAT This feature is more than a biographical snapshot into cello SAT history. Julian relates these cellists to wider developments SAT in the cellist repertoire, fusing this with his personal SAT passions. SAT SAT Presented by Julian Lloyd Webber. SAT Interviewees: Tully Potter - music historian; Professor SAT Robin Stowell - Cardiff University; Kenneth Woods - cellist SAT & conductor. SAT SAT First broadcast in January 2012. The Debussy is contrasted by Schoenberg's SAT extraordinary Expressionist melodrama Pierrot Lunaire, in SAT which a murderous Pierrot's story is told in 'sprechgesang'. It was a moment of revelation, of insight and SAT understanding, as Christ's divinity was revealed. SAT SAT Richard Strauss's Die heiligen drei Könige opens this SAT edition of Words and Music with its mournful and subdued SAT strings. Introducing the religious theme, the piece SAT describes the epic and starlit voyage of the three Magi as SAT they sought the Christ child. SAT SAT George Mackay Brown's Epiphany Poem, read by Joanna David, SAT describes the horror of this journey: the Magi 'Suffered SAT salt, snow, skulls'. But at the end, the revelation of God SAT to man brings hope and salvation; the first word is made SAT flesh. Strauss expresses the movement from suffering to SAT salvation through the modulation from minor to major key. SAT SAT The Epiphany has been interpreted by many composers SAT including Jonathan Dove, Judith Bingham and Richard Trunk SAT whose work we hear in this programme. SAT SAT In contrast, TS Eliot's The Journey of the Magi, read by SAT Bertie Carvel, is a dramatic monologue from the point of SAT view of one wise man. The anguished narrator, rather than SAT expounding the joy of the birth or the beauty of the Eastern SAT star, explains that the coming of Christ brought about the SAT end of his world, 'the old dispensation'. The birth was SAT 'bitter agony for us, like Death, our death.' SAT SAT In Queen Herod, Carol Ann Duffy subverts the Epiphany story. SAT The poem tells the tale of three queens whose visitation SAT brings a warning: the eastern star heralds the birth of 'a SAT swaggering lad' who will break her daughter's heart. SAT Stansilaw Baranczak's The Three Magi introduces a secular SAT aspect to the theme of epiphany, transposing the story to SAT Communist Poland and the arrest of a dissident: the gold of SAT a watch and the frankincense of cigarette smoke serve as SAT substitutions for the Magi's gifts: 'what is this myrrh, SAT anyway / you'd have to finally look it up / someday.' SAT SAT Beethoven's Symphony No.3 expresses a secular epiphany in SAT the finale, as its headlong rush is interrupted with a slow SAT section, building to an overwhelming climax; Janacek's Taras SAT Bulba describes a similar epiphanic movement. Here he encountered some of the early MON minimalist composers and was involved in performing concerts MON of music by John Cage. As he developed his artistic MON personality Adams rejected both Cage's ethos and that of the MON modernists. Adams has always been concerned with music as MON expressing feeling and was as open to influences from rock MON and pop music as he was to music of classical composers. In MON this sense he believes his openness to a variety of MON influences makes him closer to a fellow New Englander, MON Charles Ives. TUE TUE Former Children's Laureate, and author of War Horse, Michael TUE Morpurgo re-imagined Hansel and Gretel as a dark modern tale TUE for children, and has often returned to the Tales for TUE inspiration. It's now normal to see choreographers collaborating TUE with film makers, visual artists and playwrights and they TUE come together from all over the world. Audience figures, TUE even in recessionary times, remain impressive and many young TUE and diverse people are flocking to see new and challenging TUE work. TUE Radio became a chief means by which this misson was to be TUE accomplished, while books, adult education courses and TUE regional 'Music Travellers', also contributed to a new TUE educational field. In this series, musicologist and cultural TUE historian Richard Witts explains the movement's origins, TUE ambitions and idiosyncrasies, and clarifies why it fell out TUE of favour in the second half of the twentieth century as TUE postmodernism cast doubt on what was 'great' and 'serious'. FRI What does this epidemic tell us about bodies, minds and FRI souls under pressure? How did unstoppable dancing make its FRI way into stories such as The Red Shoes? "There's been a strange epidemic lately/Going amongst FRI the folk/So that many in their madness/Began Dancing, Which FRI they kept up day and night, Without interruption/Until they FRI fell unconscious. Many have died of it." FRI FRI There have been a number of outbreaks of dance mania FRI recorded in history, right back to 1017. Centuries before FRI Sydenham's Chorea, it was called St Vitus Dance. In FRI Strasbourg they believed the martyr had cursed them with FRI this dancing penance. FRI FRI Can someone really dance inadvertently? And dance to the FRI death? We can wonder: FRI FRI Was it an aberration (as nineteenth century writers) FRI describe it? Or might compulsive dance be (still) a creative FRI response to intolerable stress? Was it caused by famine, FRI ergotism, St Vitus, drumming or adrenalin? What's the FRI optimum music to get people dancing? Is dance contagious? FRI Why are the insane depicted as rocking, stereotypically: why FRI are fools always shown hopping and leaping? Why is death FRI shown as dancing: and why on earth did the Council in FRI Strasbourg hire musicians to play drums and pipes to keep FRI the poor compulsive dancers dancing, and even build a stage FRI for them? And aren't those the very instruments cadavers FRI play in the Danse Macabre murals, with their incessant beat? FRI FRI Frances Byrnes visits Ben Hammond, as he goes into the FRI Guinness Book of Records for dancing longer than anyone FRI else; Ethel Maqeda, who witnessed an outbreak of possession FRI when she was growing up; 9 Waves dancer, Sarah Blagg, and FRI members of Bluemouth Inc., (a theatre group who perform FRI Dance Marathons) for their insights. FRI FRI She also talks to ... historians, like John Waller (Author, FRI A Time To Dance, A Time To Die); Professor Gordon Turnbull FRI (Author, Trauma), Psychologist, Dr Peter Lovatt, "Dr Dance"; FRI Sophie Oosterwijk (expert on the Danse Macabre), to try to FRI deduce what's going on. FRI FRI And now: why do we dance when we are troubled? Why can't we FRI stop dancing? Is it still possible to be so troubled our FRI bodies will move despite us? And is dancing a sin? FRI FRI Is it too fanciful to point out that the British dance booms FRI of the last 80 years have all coincided with FRI recession/depression? Why dance? Why not riot, occupy, FRI scream? FRI Radio became a chief means by which this misson was to be FRI accomplished, while books, adult education courses and FRI regional 'Music Travellers', also contributed to a new FRI educational field. In this series, musicologist and cultural FRI historian Richard Witts explains the movement's origins, FRI ambitions and idiosyncrasies, and suggests why it fell out FRI of favour in the second half of the twentieth century. In FRI this final programme he explores the movement's excursion FRI into film, and links its demise to a new broadcasting era. FRI FRI Producer: Sara Davies FRI FRI First broadcast in August 2011.
