SAT SAT "Music, like every other art, but especially music, makes us SAT desire that everyone, as many people as possible, take part SAT in our experience of pleasure", wrote Count Leo Tolstoy in SAT his diary in October 1910. SAT SAT Several weeks later, during an icy November, Tolstoy - one SAT of the world's greatest artists and moral activists - fled SAT his family estate in Yasnaya Polyana having finally decided SAT to leave his wife. He died on his journey. One of the SAT most renowned of his later works was a novella called The SAT Kreutzer Sonata which told the tale of the infatuation of an SAT older married woman for a young violinist. SAT SAT This programme will explore how music remained a source of SAT continued recreation and delight and was an emotional SAT stimulus for Tolstoy for much of his life. SAT SAT Tolstoy loved Russian folk music and the rousing music of SAT the gypsies. At university, he was inspired by friends who SAT had a passion for music to play the piano and he wrote a SAT waltz. He even thought he might become a composer. SAT SAT Later on, eminent musicians visited the Tolstoy homes in the SAT country and in Moscow - and some performed there. They SAT included the great pianist and composer Anton Rubinstein, SAT Sergei Rachmaninov, the harpsichordist and pianist Wanda SAT Landovska, and most famously Tchaikovsky. SAT SAT Tchaikovsky wrote of meeting Tolstoy: "I was frightened and SAT self-conscious when I found myself face to face with him... SAT but his manner was very straightforward and open... with me SAT he only wanted to talk music." Based on the epic poem by SAT Ariosto, the libretto by Antonio Marchi provided Handel with SAT some very intense dramatic opportunities, including SAT star-crossed lovers, dark magic and madness. SAT SAT Alcina was composed for Handel's first season at London's SAT Covent Garden Theatre, and it premiered on April 16, 1735. SAT Like many of the composer's other serious stage works, it SAT fell into general obscurity; after a revival in Brunswick in SAT 1738 it was not performed again until a production in SAT Leipzig nearly two centuries later, in 1928. It has now SAT become one of Handel's most popular operas. SAT SAT Lucie Skeaping talks to the American harpsichordist and SAT musical director Alan Curtis at his home in Florence, who SAT recorded Alcina in 2007 with his ensemble Il Complesso SAT Barocco. That recording also starred Joyce DiDonato in the SAT title role and Karina Gauvin as her sister Morgana (the role SAT that was originally written for Thomas Arne's wife, Cecila SAT Young). In this concert SAT from the London Jazz Festival, musicians from Mali and Cuba SAT come together for the collaboration that was the original SAT Buena Vista idea. Introduced from The Barbican by Lucy Duran. SAT SAT It was in 1996 that record producer Nick Gold planned a SAT project involving veteran Cuban musicians with virtuoso SAT performers from Mali, to be recorded in Havana. In the end, SAT because of passport problems, the Malian musicians were SAT unable to come, so the recording went ahead with just the SAT Cubans - resulting in the classic Buena Vista Social Club SAT album. Now Nick Gold has finally realised the original SAT project for a new recording and concert tour. The musicians SAT include Cuban singer Eliades Ochoa, one of the Buena Vista SAT veterans, together with Malians Toumani Diabate on kora, SAT Bassekou Kouyate on ngoni, and Djelimady Tounkara playing SAT guitar, all now 14 years older, but still top performers. W.S. Graham SUN influenced the work of Harold Pinter and his genius was SUN acknowledged by T.S. Eliot. "I first read a W.S.Graham poem SUN in 1949. It sent a shiver down my spine. Forty-five years SUN later nothing has changed. His song is unique and his work SUN an inspiration." - Harold Pinter. SUN SUN Born in Greenock in 1918, Graham lived most of his adult SUN life in Cornwall. A "poet's poet" who was originally SUN influenced by Dylan Thomas, his work was musical and SUN technically brilliant. It was rooted in a sense of community SUN and place. Yet it's through the vast, metaphorical "places" SUN of his own creation - the glacial landscape of "Malcolm SUN Mooney's Land" in particular - that he most brilliantly SUN explores his theme of Language and gets inside the heads of SUN his readers: SUN SUN As well as introducing Graham's life and work, the reasons SUN for his neglect and relative obscurity will be considered. SUN The programme will refer especially to the poet's final SUN collection, "Implements in Their Places", the culmination of SUN Graham's talents. Presenter Henry will journey to the places SUN that inspired Graham, and speak to the people who've been SUN touched by his work. SUN SUN Music and language are close cousins in this lyric poet's SUN oeuvre, not least in his revered poem, Johann Joachim SUN Quantz's Five Lessons in which Quantz, an eighteenth century SUN virtuoso flautist, advises a student, Karl, "a lout from the SUN canal / With big ears but an angel's tread on the flute." As SUN Douglas Dunn says, this poem is "the closest we get to a SUN manifesto on art-making.". SUN SUN 22:15 Words and Music b00j15vn (Listen) SUN Sport SUN Elgar loved football, Debussy composed a tennis match, and SUN Honegger wrote a musical game of rugby. Poet laureates from SUN William Wordsworth to Wole Soyinka, and Gwyneth Lewis have SUN all turned their pen to sporting passions. Sports crowds in SUN return use music and song to raise their hopes and cheer on SUN their flagging sporting heroes, from Sunderland FC, who come SUN out to Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet, to Liverpool FC’s SUN footballing anthem You'll Never Walk Alone. SUN Words and Music this week explores the world of sport. The SUN original Greek Games had their origins in a poetic and SUN musical tradition, and the world of sport - the human SUN endeavour, the triumphs and failures - continues to hold a SUN fascination for writers and composers. SUN James Alexander Gordon’s football results have a music of SUN their own, and the Haka has the fierce poetry of a war song. MON MON 12:00 Composer of the Week b00w5rft (Listen) MON Ernest John Moeran (1894-1950), Moeran's Ghost MON MON "Old Raspberry", commonly known as Jack Moeran, was a MON pioneer in the collecting of British folk music. Greatly MON influenced by the music of Delius and Vaughan Williams, much MON of Moeran's output is inspired by nature, and was championed MON by the leading artists of the day. He was a great friend to MON Peter Warlock - both enjoyed travelling together to rural MON public inns to record the singing of the local inhabitants. MON Moeran and Warlock lived together for a period at Eynsford MON in Kent, where many tales of nudity, drunkenness and MON reckless driving originated. MON MON Moeran's life, although spanning a short period of just over MON fifty years, is an interesting one. Tutored at the Royal MON College of Music by Sir Charles Villiers Stanford and John MON Ireland, his studies were interrupted by the First World War MON when Jack was posted to the Western Front. Due to an MON exploding shell, he sustained a head injury which affected MON him for the rest of his life. Alcohol also affected Moeran, MON although it was sometimes questionable as to whether it was MON the drink or his head injury which was making him stagger. MON MON A love interest for Moeran, cellist Peers Coetmore, entered MON into the composer's life relatively late. Moeran composed a MON number of works for her including a sonata and concerto, but MON although Jack certainly gained much inspiration from their MON relationship, the marriage itself was not a success. MON Coetmore confessed to one friend that it was like being MON married to an uncle. MON MON Moeran in the second part of his life spent much time at MON Kenmare in Ireland. The rural landscape there provided him MON with the solitude and inspiration he craved. It was at MON Kenmare on one stormy night, that Moeran fell off the pier MON into the mouth of Kenmare River. His body was pulled out the MON next day. Some speculated suicide, or drunkenness, but the MON inquest found that he'd had a stroke which had caused him to MON fall. MON MON Throughout the week there will be archive recordings each MON day of E.J.Moeran in interview from 1947, discussing his MON life and music. MON MON In the first programme exploring the life and music of E. J. MON Moeran, Donald Macleod looks at the composer's early years, MON including his tuition at the Royal College of Music, his MON earliest piano music from 1919, and his involvement in the MON First World War. THU THU Presenter Rana Mitter joins a panel and an audience at Radio THU 3's Free Thinking festival to debate the question: Do THU Possessions Make Us Happy? THU THU To many the answer seems obvious: Owning things makes THU millions of people happy, whether it's shoes, smart cars or THU new houses. So why do critics say that worldly goods are THU just a recipe for envy and disappointment? Environmentalists THU believe that we need to make sparer use of our earthly THU resources. Faith leaders think that we need to avoid THU excessive attachment to worldly goods. But can our society - THU even in hard times - ever overcome the undeniable pleasures THU of purchase and possession? THU THU To argue over the merits of materialism are Sarah Dunant, THU international best-selling author of Renaissance thrillers; THU plastic surgeon Paul Baguley who carries out cosmetic THU surgery across the North East; psychotherapist Jan McGregor THU Hepburn, a specialist in guilt; and religious writer Sara THU Maitland, author of "The Book of Silence". THU THU "The Pursuit of Happiness" is the central theme of this THU year's BBC Radio 3 Free Thinking 2010 (5-7 November) and THU this programme is recorded at The Sage Gateshead as part of THU the festival. THU THU Hooke was at the forefront of invention in the 17th century. THU As he and his fellow scientists went about their quest to THU 'know everything', Hooke was continually inventing new ways THU with machinery, telescopes, microscopes, watches and THU medicine. FRI FRI 12:00 Composer of the Week b00w6bnc (Listen) FRI Ernest John Moeran (1894-1950), A Mysterious Death FRI FRI "Old Raspberry", commonly known as Jack Moeran, was a FRI pioneer in the collecting of British folk music - as a FRI composer he was greatly inspired by nature - and was FRI involved in many tales of nudity, drunkenness and reckless FRI driving that originated from his time living with Peter FRI Warlock. FRI FRI Jack Moeran in the second half of his life, met the cellist FRI Peers Coetmore. Donald Macleod follows their relationship, FRI which eventually blossomed into marriage, but was not a huge FRI success. On the eve of his wedding, Jack confessed to a FRI friend that he thought the marriage would be a disaster. FRI This relationship did however inspire Moeran to compose a FRI number of works for Peers, including a Prelude, Sonata and FRI his Cello Concerto. FRI FRI Moeran started to become aware of his failing health in the FRI last few years of his life. He was desperately trying to FRI work on his second symphony, back in the setting of Kenmare FRI which he loved so much, but found that he could not FRI concentrate for sustained periods of time. On one stormy FRI night, he fell from the pier into the Kenmare river. FRI Although some presumed he was drunk, or with his increasing FRI mental instability maybe he took his life, the inquest in FRI fact found that he'd had a stroke. FRI FRI This programme includes an interview of Moeran from 1947, FRI discussing his wish to complete his second symphony back in FRI Kenmare - a task he was never to fulfil.
