In 1911 he wrote to his mother ‘I SAT hardly ever think of ought else but sex, race, athletics, SAT speech and art'. These were the basis of Grainger's SAT self-defined ‘all-roundedness', but many of his beliefs did SAT not sit easily with the society of his time. SAT SAT Tom talks to pianist Penelope Thwaites, who’s edited a new SAT book on Grainger’s music, about why there’s more to the man SAT and his music than his colourful eccentricities. Fascinated by SUN the diverse range of cultures and the different kinds of SUN music that Drake would have witnessed, Fretwork invited SUN composer Orlando Gough to blend a mixture of period viol SUN pieces alongside new music that would evoke the period and SUN the places and the adventures that Drake and his crew were SUN known to have encountered. SUN SUN Georg Buchner was only 23 when he died of typhus in Zurich SUN in 1837. By then he had a reputation as a biological SUN scientist. He had also been a revolutionary, calling on SUN workers to overthrow the ruling aristocrats. He had to flee SUN the state to escape arrest and his picture appeared on SUN wanted posters. SUN SUN He returned to his family, promising to concentrate on his SUN studies, but in five weeks he wrote 'Danton's Death', hiding SUN the script under scientific notes whenever anyone came in. SUN This is now widely regarded (by the dramatist Howard SUN Brenton, for instance) as the greatest play about SUN revolution. SUN SUN When he died he left, unfinished, 'Woyzeck', the first play SUN in which the central character is working class. He also SUN wrote a novella, 'Lenz', the first to delineate a SUN schizophrenic breakdown. This marks the beginning of modern SUN German prose literature. Yet, when he died, and for most of SUN the 19th century, Buchner was unknown as a writer. SUN SUN In 'The World is Out of Order!' Peter Thompson, the expert SUN on German literature, culture and politics who teaches at SUN Sheffield University, investigates the circumstances of SUN Buchner's life and the society in which he lived. He hears SUN from scholars such as Professor Susanne Kord of University SUN College, London and Professor Karen Leeder of Oxford SUN University about his importance to German letters and SUN thought, and from Howard Brenton, whose version of 'Danton's SUN Death' was recently produced by the National Theatre. Werner SUN Herzog has filmed it, Alban Berg has made it into opera and SUN the Icelandic director Gisli Orn Gardasson reinvented it in SUN the theatre. And he reveals why Buchner's art speaks so SUN eloquently and urgently to us today. MON MON He was the first significant Russian musician to engage in MON collecting folksongs, as he was keen to develop an authentic MON kind of Russian music. These traditional musical forms would MON filter into his own works such as Tamara, creating exotic MON and oriental sounds that would be emulated by other MON composers. His overtures based on folk song would also MON become a blueprint for future generations. Although MON Balakirev would later quarrel with all members of The Mighty MON Handful, not least of all due to his overbearing MON personality, if he hadn't encouraged Mussorgsky, Borodin and MON Rimsky-Korsakov to pursue composition, they all might have MON followed very different careers. MON MON In the first episode exploring the life and music of Mily MON Balakirev, Donald Macleod looks at the composer's early MON years. He was born in Nizhy-Novgorod, but a well-off patron MON would soon take Balakirev under his wing, and with MON Ulybyshev's influence including a library stocked full of MON musical scores, Balakirev would eventually have the MON opportunity of meeting his musical hero Glinka, in St MON Petersburg. MON MON Balakirev would present a number of his early works to MON Glinka, including his one movement Octet opus 3, and a piano MON work based on Glinka's opera A Life for the Tsar. TUE TUE Balakirev made a name for himself in St Petersburg not only TUE as a composer, but also as a concert pianist with works such TUE as his Grand Fantasy on Russian Folksongs. However, he felt TUE 'forced to perform in public', even in the presence of the TUE Tsar and members of the Imperial family, and wished to TUE pursue his musical career in composition. TUE TUE Before Glinka died, he had virtually anointed Balakirev as TUE his musical heir, to uphold the Russian national style. TUE Balakirev became interested in collecting folk music, in TUE order to develop an authentic kind of Russian music, such as TUE his Overture on Three Russian Themes. His overtures based on TUE folk music would become blueprints for future generations of TUE composers, and Balakirev had already started to collect TUE around him an orbiting system of satellite talents including TUE Mussorgsky - a group later to be known as The Mighty TUE Handful. THU THU Balakirev, now at the height of his career, was invited to THU conduct the Russian Music Society. His first act was to THU invite Berlioz to Russia to conduct some of the concerts. THU Balakirev assisted Berlioz with the chorus, which would THU influence Balakirev's knowledge of writing for choirs, in THU hymns such as Let all mortal flesh keep silence. THU THU Late 1860's, the tide was turning, and Balakirev's THU popularity was on the wane. He'd antagonised a powerful THU adversary in the person of the Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna, THU and he soon found himself out of work and looking for THU employment on the railways. It was during this time that THU Balakirev turned to religion, with burning lamps flickering THU in front of icons in every room of his home. Balakirev would THU later compose a number of religious anthems, including The THU Prophets, inspired by Heaven. THU THU By the late 1870's, Balakirev was emerging from depression, THU having not composed anything for a good ten year period. FRI Elgar's In the South takes its subtitle 'Alassio' from the FRI name of the Italian town where he and his family escaped the FRI winter of 1903-4. For Saint-Saëns Egypt was a favourite FRI destination, hence the nickname of his final piano concerto, FRI which he wrote in Luxor. Walton's Second Symphony, written FRI on the Mediterranean island of Ischia where he'd settled, FRI was mostly written off as hopelessly conservative back in FRI 1960 when he composed it, but today it is recognised not FRI only as one as of Walton's masterpieces but as one of the FRI greatest symphonies of the 20th century. FRI Although they sound as loud as each other, the noise they FRI make can have a very different effect on the listener. The FRI sound of a full symphony orchestra can be a visceral thrill, FRI a physical pleasure. FRI FRI Trevor Cox, Professor of Acoustic Engineering at Salford FRI University, speaks to members of the BBC Philharmonic about FRI making loud music - not just the sound but the thrill of FRI playing in the orchestra. Does the excitement of creating FRI loud music cause purely physical pleasure or is something FRI more subtle at work? FRI FRI Trevor also speaks to a rock fan and a hip hop fan about the FRI loud music they enjoy; does it need to be constantly loud FRI for them to derive pleasure from it?
