The Gambler/Sibelius/Van Doesburg/The WestbrooksSAT
SAT
Petroc Trelawny explores the world of Prokofiev'sSAT
action-packed opera The Gambler, reads a new biography ofSAT
composer Jean Sibelius, visits a new exhibition of works bySAT
Dadaist Theo van Doesburg, and meets jazz duo TheSAT
Westbrooks.SAT
SAT
Petroc Trelawny visits rehearsals for a new Covent GardenSAT
production of Prokofiev’s opera based on Dostoevsky’s novelSAT
of the same name – an action-packed tale about theSAT
addictive nature of casino life. One of the least known ofSAT
Sergei Prokofiev’s operas, its Russian premiere wasSAT
thwarted by the Revolution of 1917; it was first performedSAT
in Brussels and not in Russia until 1974.SAT
SAT
The director of the Royal Opera’s production, Richard Jones,SAT
and conductor Antonio Pappano, talk to Petroc about how theSAT
story and music connect with audiences today, and ProkofievSAT
expert Christina Guillaumier tells the opera’s story.SAT
SAT
The 1917 Revoution may have delayed the premiere of TheSAT
Gambler, but it meant freedom for the nation of Finland.SAT
Composer Jean Sibelius had already become synonymous withSAT
the culture and ideals of his homeland, but in a new bookSAT
Glenda Dawn Goss, an American academic and teacher at theSAT
Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, argues that he was aSAT
reluctant nationalist.SAT
SAT
Petroc talks to Goss and to Osmo Vanska who has just beenSAT
conducting a Sibelius symphony cycle with the LondonSAT
Philharmonic Orchestra (Nos. 4, 5 and Luonnotar areSAT
broadcast in Performance on 3 on 15 February).SAT
SAT
The year 1917 also saw the Dutch artist Theo van DoesburgSAT
form his movement ‘De Stijl’ (‘The Style’) with fellowSAT
artist Piet Mondrian. Music was central to the group’sSAT
work, and his pianist wife Nelly would often join him onSAT
stage for various Dadaist ‘happenings’, performing music bySAT
Satie, Schönberg and Poulenc.SAT
SAT
Petroc visits a new exhibition of van Doesberg’s work atSAT
Tate Modern in London, and talks to its curator MichaelSAT
White and musical consultant, the conductor Richard Bernas.SAT
SAT
Scroll down to see some images from the exhibition.SAT
As musicians, writers and composers Mike and Kate WestbrookSAT
have been performing and living together for 35 years.SAT
Their music covers a huge range of styles and forms, fromSAT
intimate jazz and cabaret song to opera works and big bandSAT
arrangements of Rossini.SAT
SAT
Ahead of a duo tour around the UK, they talk to Petroc aboutSAT
the processes involved in working together, and about theSAT
importance of making music for the local community.SAT

Dimitrie CantemirSAT
SAT
Lucie Skeaping profiles the extraordinary life and work ofSAT
the polyglot Dimitrie Cantemir. Born in Moldavia in 1673,SAT
he became one of the foremost intellectuals of EasternSAT
Europe. Scholar, Orientalist, composer, theorist,SAT
historian, and fleetingly Prince of Moldavia, he also wasSAT
a virtuoso played of the tanbur, a long-necked lute. InSAT
1710 Cantemir compiled 'The Book of the Science of Music',SAT
a collection of about 355 compositions, 9 of which were bySAT
Cantemir himself. This collection charted the theory andSAT
forms of 17th century Ottoman music, and was written in aSAT
notation also devised by Cantemir. The music in theSAT
programme includes several works form this book, andSAT
traditional music from the Ottoman world during this time,SAT
including recordings by HespÃrion XXI.SAT

composers hailing from Europe, the UK and America, playedSAT
by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. Jac van SteenSAT
conducts David Sawer's Byrnan Wood - now a modern classicSAT

work, Aquilo, which won Sierra the Takemitsu Prize inSAT

Four hundred years ago, much of Central Europe was underSUN
Turkish rule and the traces of their presence remain toSUN
this day. We bathe, drink coffee and eat croissantsSUN
courtesy of the Ottoman Turks. Even the music of Mozart isSUN
full of Turkish sounds. Yet many nations still resistSUN
Turkey joining the EU. Is this because they are in denialSUN

contemporary Austrians, Bosnians and Turks - artists,SUN

Song for IrelandSUN
SUN
A sequence of poetry, prose and music exploring theSUN
identity of the Irish through the landscape, with readingsSUN
from Irish actors Lorcan Cranitch and Orla Charlton.SUN
SUN
Literature featured spans the 9th century to the presentSUN
day and includes some of the best-loved Irish poets - WBSUN
Yeats, Seamus Heaney, PJ Kavanagh, Derek Mahon and PaulSUN
Durcan. Music ranges from the pastoral idyll of Bax's MoySUN
Mell and the chaotic Irish circus of John Cage'sSUN
Roaratorio to the sound of Liam O' Flynn on Uillean pipesSUN
and young flute player Michael McGoldrick.SUN
SUN
This week’s edition of Words and Music take the theme ofSUN
Ireland.SUN
SUN
Renowned Irish actors, Lorcan Cranitch and Orla CharltonSUN
read a wide range of poetry and prose from the 9th centurySUN
to the present day. The programme explores the identity ofSUN
the Irish through their landscape. Seamus Heaney’s BoglandSUN
sits alongside the 9th century poem Toward Winter. PJSUN
Kavanagh’s Schancoduff and Heaney’s Digging look at theSUN
handing down of traditions and the connection with theSUN
landscape. The backdrop is the turbulent history ofSUN
Ireland: Rising of the Moon read by both actors, is anSUN
Irish ballad referring to the outbreak of the 1798SUN
rebellion in county Kildare as United Irish rebels conveySUN
the order to rise.SUN
SUN
The air of hope and optimism associated with theSUN
ultimately doomed rebellion was intended to provideSUN
inspiration for rebels. An Buachaillin Ban is aSUN
revolutionary song but subtlely disguised as a love song.SUN
Derek Mahon’s Derry Morning looks at contemporary citySUN
life and Paul Durcan’s Going home to Mayo the pull to theSUN
countryside away from the daylight nightmare of DublinSUN
city. The wide variety of music includes theSUN
unmistakeable, Liam O’Flynn on Uillean pipes, Bax’s toneSUN
poem Moy Mell (The Happy Plain) played by Ashley Wass andSUN
Martin Roscoe, a new recording The Celtic Viol by JordiSUN
Savall and John Cage’s evocation of a Irish circus inSUN
Roratorio, a chaotic but exuberant blending of naturalSUN
sounds with musical fragments and words by James Joyce.SUN
SUN
The programme has a melancholy air through the hauntingSUN
voice of Illar O Lionaird, Tomas O Caniann’s lament forSUN
Francey and Henry Newbolt’s “Ireland, Ireland, green andSUN
sad”, celebrating the beauty of the landscape but alsoSUN
plaintive and poignant. Jessica Isaacs (producer)SUN

Pat MethenySUN
SUN
Pat Metheny has moved away from his One Quiet NightSUN
concept where played continually for hours and took hisSUN
favourite moments to make his new album calledSUN
OrchestrionSUN
SUN
Orchestrion brings a musical idea from the late 19th andSUN
early 20th centuries - a large mechanical multi-instrumentSUN
device that uses actual orchestral instruments of variousSUN
types, called an orchestrion. Metheny's concept includesSUN
a large ensemble of acoustic instruments - includingSUN
several pianos, drum kit, marimbas, guitar-bots, dozensSUN
of percussion instruments and even cabinets of carefullySUN
tuned bottles. Through Metheny's guitar and compositionalSUN
mind, five new original pieces showcase the instruments asSUN
they are struck, plucked, and otherwise played via theSUN
technology of switches and pneumatics. Metheny worked forSUN
months with a brilliant team of scientists and engineersSUN
to develop and assemble the New Orchestrion for thisSUN
project.SUN
The programme also features part of a concert setSUN
featuring Bill Frisell, recorded in Austria last year.SUN

Stamitz, Bohemian EmergentMON
MON
The various members of the Stamitz family are not exactlyMON
household names today. But during the eighteenth century,MON
Stamitz was one of the most famous and celebrated names inMON
music, with a dynasty of composers working all over Europe.MON
MON
This week, Donald Macleod tells theMON
rags-to-riches-and-back-to-rags-again tale of the mostMON
successful Stamitz - Johann - and his two sons, Carl andMON
Anton. It's a story which begins with fame and fortune.MON
Johann quickly achieved a reputation across Europe and wasMON
snapped up by the Mannheim Court, which was home to theMON
best orchestra in Europe at the time, the envy of theMON
world. According to Dr Charles Burney, .. there are moreMON
solo players and good composers in this, than perhaps inMON
any other orchestra in Europe; it is an army of generals,MON
equally fit to plan a battle as to fight it. Together,MON
this extraordinary band and their director set aboutMON
revolutionizing the sound of the orchestra and itsMON
repertoire.MON
MON
As the series unfolds, the glittering success of JohannMON
ends in a tragically early death, and we meet his twoMON
sons, Carl and Anton, neither of whom could match theirMON
father's achievements. Anton must have thought he had itMON
made when he got a job with the King's Music at the FrenchMON
court. The timing was unfortunate though - this was theMON
1780s and working for the French king was about to becomeMON
rather less prestigious than it had been for the previousMON
several centuries. Anton managed to escape the RevolutionMON
intact, but the lives of both brothers ended unhappily,MON
childless, alone, in poverty - a sad end to a fascinatingMON
journey through one family's rise and fall, against theMON
backdrop of glorious eighteenth century music.MON
MON
1: Bohemian Emergent. In the first episode, Donald tracesMON
the early career of the most successful of the Stamitzes -MON
Johann - who single-handedly revolutionized the sound ofMON
the orchestra in the eighteenth century, thanks to hisMON
work at the Mannheim Court.MON

Beethoven/Barenboim, Beethoven: Piano Concerto No 3MON

Performance on 3 continues its broadcasts of DanielMON
Barenboim's Beethoven Piano Concerto cycle with the BerlinMON
Staatskapelle recorded at London's South Bank. TonightMON
they perform Beethoven's 3rd Concerto coupled withMON
Schoenberg's Variations for Orchestra.MON
MON
Beethoven's 3rd Concerto written around 1803 is a far moreMON
ambitious work than its predecessors and with its minorMON
key it brings out the more turbulent side of Beethoven'sMON
personality. It took him several years to complete andMON
even at the premiere - according to his page turner -MON
there were still incomplete passages which BeethovenMON
improvised 'I saw almost nothing but empty leaves; at theMON
most on one page or another a few Egyptian hieroglyphsMON
wholly unintelligible to me scribbled down as clues forMON
him; he played nearly the whole solo part from memory,MON
since, as was so often the case, he hadn't had time to putMON
it all down on paper.'MON
MON
As part of the broadcast Barenboim gives an illustratedMON
talk about the op.31 Variations, and after the mainMON
concert we hear him perform Beethoven's DiabelliMON

this seemingly inconsequential ability has been highlyMON
significant in human evolution.MON
MON
We also review the first English translation Desert, ofMON
one of the finest novels by J M G Le Clezio, who won theMON
2008 Nobel Prize for literature for a body of work whichMON
the jury described as being characterised by poeticMON

Germany Dreaming, Germany is Your AmericaMON
MON
With the greatest respect to Dr Freud, I have never putMON
much store by the interpretation of dreams. But one nightMON
seven years ago I had a dream which actually changed myMON
life. As I slid towards sleep, it seemed as though aMON
corner of the room was beginning to glow...MON
MON
The author and critic Michael Bracewell dreams about aMON
visitation by the legendary musician Brian Eno, whoMON
informs him that 'Germany is your America', and that heMON
should get out there and explore the place. So after muchMON
speculation about things German, after visits to Cologne,MON
Munich and Berlin, and after immersing himself in theMON
music and art of the country (especially electronic musicMON
and post modern art) the author is ready to pronounce onMON
his romantic and prejudical responses to the country.MON
There is also its food to consider. And its youthfulMON
fashions.MON
MON
What does he dig up? Lots! Starting with his recollectionsMON
of a certain youth culture, influenced by the style ofMON
Weimar Germany.Which you can hear about in his speciallyMON
commissioned five part series for The Essay.MON

Jez Nelson presents a gig by pianist Craig Taborn and hisMON

acoustic concert stretches the compositional capabilitiesMON
of the traditional piano trio.MON
MON
Craig grew up in the mid-west of America where he beganMON
his career playing and recording with saxophonist JamesMON

trio sound through exploring the rhythmic structures andMON
textural space created during improvisation. His lastMON

Philip Dodd talks to David Willetts, Shadow Secretary ofTUE
State for Universities about his new book The PinchTUE
arguing that the baby boomer generation have thrived atTUE
the expense of their children. The baby boom of 1945-65TUE
produced the biggest, richest generation that Britain hasTUE
ever known. Today baby boomers run our country; by virtueTUE
of their sheer demographic power, they have fashioned theTUE
world around them in a way that meets all of theirTUE
housing, healthcare and financial needs. Will the youngTUE
people of today continue to pay for their parents' qualityTUE
of life, or can the Baby Boomers give something backTUE
before its too late?TUE
TUE
And we also look at the extraordinary life and work ofTUE
American painter Arshile Gorky as a major retrospective ofTUE
his work opens at Tate Modern. Largely self - taught, theTUE
Armenian-born Gorky produced some of the most importantTUE
Abstract Expressionist works of the century before aTUE
series of personal tragedies led to his suicide at the ageTUE
of 44.TUE

Performance on 3 continues its informal focus on the worksWED
of Beethoven with the start of a landmark cycle of theWED
composer's symphonies performed by leading periodWED
instrument group The Orchestra of the Age ofWED
Enlightenment. They begin their cycle with symphoniesWED
no.4, one of the composer's most underrated yet dramaticWED
and no.7 one of the most popular and a reflection of theWED
time in which it was written during the Napoleonic Wars.WED
They are conducted by Vladimir Jurowski with whom theWED
orchestra have a close relationship developed in bothWED
opera house and concert hall, one of four conductors withWED
whom they'll work on the complete cycle over the next fewWED
months.WED
WED
Each symphony in this cycle is prefaced with episodes fromWED
the life of the composer read by newsreader and BeethovenWED
biographer, John Suchet adapted from his fictionalisedWED
life of the composer The Last Master.WED

Richard Strauss is reported to have boasted that he couldTHU
even depict a knife and fork in music, so when he sets outTHU
to depict the grandeur and majesty of the Alps in hisTHU
Alpine Symphony - the result is impressive. Scored for aTHU
huge orchestra with wonderful musical portraits of aTHU
waterfall, blazing sun on an ice-capped summit and aTHU
musical storm the piece describes an alpine hike fromTHU
sunrise to sunset. As Strauss idolised the music of MozartTHU
it's appropriate that his work is prefaced by twoTHU
compositions by the 18th century master. His SymphonyTHU
no.33, one of the last works he wrote in Salzburg beforeTHU
moving to Vienna, and one of his most popular PianoTHU

FRI
For one reason or another, Johann Stamitz's two sons neverFRI
really achieved their father's fame or fortune. Anton mustFRI
have thought he'd got it made when he started work as aFRI
member of the King's Music at the French Court. Bad timingFRI
though. This was the 1780s, and royal patronage was aboutFRI
to become a whole lot less desirable than it had been forFRI
several centuries. Anton survived the Revolution, but asFRI
Donald Macleod discovers, both of the Stamitz sons died inFRI
terrible circumstances - the end of aFRI

When, in 1723, J S Bach was appointed Cantor of St Thomas'FRI
Church, Leipzig - third choice for the job - the townFRI
council famously remarked that, since the best was notFRI
available, they must make do with the mediocre. But StFRI
Thomas' already had a long and distinguished musicalFRI
tradition before Bach arrived, and this concert exploresFRI
the music both of Bach and of his predecessors. Many ofFRI
these, like Bach, ended their days at St Thomas' and diedFRI
in office - the Cantor's post a career-summit from whichFRI
they wouldn't wish to move. But for Bach, St Thomas's wasFRI
a step down (after his previous more illustriousFRI
appointments at the Ducal and Princely courts) and oneFRI
from which he spent a considerable amount of time tryingFRI
to escape!FRI

FRI
The music of Bach has inspired film makers as far back asFRI
the silent era up to the present day. Film historianFRI
Professor Ian Christie traces the composer's impact onFRI
films including The Battleship Potemkin, Disney's FantasiaFRI
of 1940, which featured Bach's Toccata and Fugue in DFRI
Minor, and the switched-on synthesised Bach of StanleyFRI
Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange.FRI
FRI
During World War Two the morale-boosting Listen To BritainFRI
short films were accompanied by Myra Hess playing Bach atFRI
the National Gallery, the nationality of the composerFRI
notwithstanding. The timelessness of the music detachedFRI
viewers from its German heritage.FRI
FRI
In 1964 Pier Paolo Pasolini's The Gospel According to StFRI
Matthew, an interpretation of the life of Christ based onFRI
the writings of the Apostle Matthew, combined Bach withFRI
Billie Holiday to towering effect while Daniele HuilletFRI
and Jean Marie Straub's famous film biography of theFRI
composer told through his wife's journals, Chronicle ofFRI
Anna Magdalena Bach, transported the film to soaringFRI
heights.FRI
FRI
Christie celebrates Bach's influence on film throughFRI

Turkish Literature - Orhan PamukFRI
FRI
As part of Radio 3's focus on Turkey, Ian McMillanFRI
presents a special edition of Radio 3's cabaret of theFRI
word, focussing on Turkish literature, and featuring anFRI
interview with Orhan Pamuk and an exploration of theFRI
Turkey's influential poetic avant-garde in the 1950s, theFRI
Ikinci Yeni.FRI
FRI
McMillan talks to Pamuk, who is as controversial figure inFRI
his own country as he is feted abroad, about the politicalFRI
stance he has taken on issues such as the history ofFRI
Turkey's relationship with its Armenian population, andFRI
the personal cost to him of that stance. Pamuk alsoFRI
discusses his new novel, The Museum of Innocence, and itsFRI
portrayal of a Turkish elite stranded between theFRI
traditions of their own country and the shallowFRI
distractions of Western consumerism.FRI
FRI
Ian will also be exploring the lasting influence of theFRI
poets who made up the Ikinci Yeni, or Second New, Turkey'sFRI
avant garde poetry scene in the 1950s. The work of EceFRI
Ayhan, Ilhan Berk and their colleagues remainsFRI
little-known outside Turkey, and yet their influence isFRI
discernible in the work of many contemporary TurkishFRI
writers, Orhan Pamuk among them.FRI
FRI
The programme will also feature the best new TurkishFRI
writing and profile the English writers who have chosen toFRI
make Istanbul (one of this year's European Capitals ofFRI
Culture) their home.FRI
