SAT A sequence of poetry and music inspired by the sights and sounds SAT of the Iberian Peninsula. SAT SAT This is complemented by atmospheric writing by outsiders such SAT as Byron, Washington Irving and Ted Hughes. SAT This week's programme pays a visit to the Iberian Peninsula, a SAT part of the world whose poetry and music often betrays the SAT remarkable confluence of cultures, the coming together of East SAT and West, Christian and Muslim, that has occurred here over the SAT last millennium. There are two strands present in this selection of SAT work: Spain and Portugal as seen by outsiders, and as portrayed in SAT the music and poetry of its inhabitants. SAT SAT When I sat down to plan this programme I found myself SAT overwhelmed by the richness of Spanish music, one of the most SAT pungent and unmistakeable national traditions there is; and as a SAT consequence this selection is substantially Spanish in emphasis. SAT In particular I was reminded of the frequent presence in Iberian SAT music of the Church: the glorious sacred choral music of the SAT sixteenth century, to my mind the finest musical product of Spain SAT or Portugal, has left its mark - notably in the case of the Falla SAT harpsichord concerto, whose slow movement here follows a SAT beautiful motet by the great Toledan composer Alonso Lobo. SAT Although most of the music here is by Spanish composers, I SAT decided also to include a couple of pieces by outsiders reacting to SAT what they saw in Spain - the Rimsky-Korsakov and Miles Davis SAT selections, notably. The sound of the guitar is seldom far from the SAT music of Iberia, a fact reflected not just in the flamenco piece SAT played by Paco Pena, but in works by two composers of very SAT different era and style, Domenico Scarlatti and Roberto Gerhard, SAT which both imitate the rhythms and instruments of folk music. SAT SAT The poetry and prose was chosen for its atmospheric qualities and SAT ability to conjure an image spontaneously. About half of the SAT poems are taken from the work of some of the greatest Iberian SAT writers of the last hundred years: Lorca, Pessoa, Machado, as well SAT as the Nobel laureate Juan Ramon Jiminez. Two of the greatest SAT prose writers on Spain proved impossible to omit: Hemingway SAT and Washington Irving. Connections between poems and music SAT continually suggested themselves: the martial quality of the SAT opening bars of the Miles Davis track, as well as its exoticism, SAT might almost have been tailored for the Irving excerpt; Antonio SAT Restrepo's description of a Toledo monk bent in prayer prompts SAT music written for Toledo Cathedral; and Thomas Ades's Living SAT Toys is arguably just as evocative of the bullfight as SAT Hemingway's celebrated Death in the Afternoon. I wanted also to SAT inject a bit of surprise: dissenting voices such as Emily Lawless, SAT yearning for home, and Ted Hughes (You Hated Spain). There SAT are musical surprises, too, most obviously in the nearly-Flamenco SAT track called Farruca, which... but enough; you'll enjoy it more if I SAT explain no further SAT SAT RUNNING ORDER SAT SAT 00:00:00 SAT Washington Irving SAT From The Alhambra SAT Reader: Andrew Wincott SAT 00:00:35 SAT Miles Davis SAT Saeta SAT Sketches of Spain SAT CBS 4606042 SAT 00:05:14 SAT Federico Garcia Lorca (tr. SUN How does the composer suggest the complex psychology of SUN his characters through his music? How does he use the SUN orchestra to evoke the poetic equivalent of Shakespeares SUN verse? SUN SUN Otello is one of two great masterpieces of the operatic SUN repertory that Verdi composed in the eighth decade of his SUN life. Written in 1887, it was followed six years later by SUN his final opera, Falstaff. SUN SUN Including writings by EM Forster, PG Wodehouse, Ian SUN McEwan, Frances Hodgson Burnett, Jane Austen, Thomas Hardy SUN and Walt Whitman, as well as music from Shostakovich, SUN Tallis, Ravel, Sciarrino, Bach and Part. SUN SUN Rebecca Hall SUN SUN John Paul Connolly SUN SUN Producer Note SUN SUN In this edition of Words & Music, with John Paul Connolly SUN and Rebecca Hall, I wanted to explore the distinction SUN between listening and hearing, and some of the different SUN ways of experiencing and doing both. EM Forster’s Helen SUN Schlegel (“Howards End”) can hardly contain her breathless SUN excitement listening to Beethoven, while to PG Wodehouse’s SUN Bertie Wooster, a violin solo has a familiar quality “of SUN seeming to last much longer than it actually did”. SUN SUN To Brian Keenan in his prison cell, the sound of a dusty SUN ventilation pipe becomes “all the music of the world” and SUN has to be exorcised with a crazed dance; the heightened SUN hearing of Emily in Ian McEwan’s “Attonement” has become SUN almost a “sixth sense”. SUN SUN Both Frances Hodgson Burnett’s Mary in “A Secret Garden” SUN and Jane Austen’s Elizabeth Bennett in “Pride and SUN Prejudice” hear more than they should, and the mourners in SUN Hardy’s “After the Burial” hear more than they would have SUN liked. The bitter frustration of not being heard at all SUN overflows in George Herbert’s “Deniall”, which is followed SUN by a heartfelt “Miserere” by Tallis. SUN SUN In the darkness of night, after the nocturnal calls of the SUN birds and beasts of Thomas Middleton, the smallest sounds SUN become intensified. As Walter de la Mare listens in a SUN creepy old house he hears the supernatural behind the near SUN silence, and William Stafford tries to recapture the SUN experience of his father who responded in a spiritual way SUN to the nearly inaudible. This sequence is set to music by SUN Ravel, Sciarrino, and Bach. SUN SUN Music from Shostakovich’s Eighth Symphony prepares the way SUN for Walt Whitman’s beating drums and blowing bugles, the SUN symbolic sounds of the implacable, indiscrimate SUN destruction of war. The sea’s “many voices” are the SUN superficial concern of the programme’s last text, an SUN excerpt from TS Eliot’s richly layered “The Dry Salvages”. SUN It ends with a clanging bell – the same sound which begins SUN Arvo Pärt’s “Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten”, the SUN final music. SUN SUN The programme’s title, by the way, comes from the first SUN text, taken from Shakespeare’s “The Tempest”. And just SUN like Caliban’s isle, the programme is “…full of noises…” SUN which I hope will give delight and hurt not. TUE TUE The most influential futurist musician was Luigi Russolo TUE who argued for a complete reappraisal of classical TUE orchestras to include sounds of the modern world. He TUE designed and built early mechanical synthesisers, or TUE intonarumori, to recreate the sounds of factories, cars TUE and whistles. TUE TUE Robert travels to Milan, the birthplace of Futurism, to TUE visit reconstructions of the intonarumori - a collection TUE of instruments invented by Russolo - and re-imagine the TUE sounds of the trams and the mighty railway station which TUE inspired them. With all but a few shards of Russolo's TUE music lost or destroyed, why do the Art of Noises continue TUE to resonate for many musicians and artists today?
