SAT       Martin Handley explores the importance of the famous
SAT       Italian music publishing firm Casa Ricordi. Throughout
SAT       most of the 19th and 20th centuries, the history of
SAT       Italian opera was directly tied to the fortunes of this
SAT       single family publishing house, based in Milan.
SAT       
SAT       The company was founded in 1808 by Giovanni Ricordi, a
SAT       violinist who led the orchestra in a small Milanese
SAT       theatre. From very small beginnings, the business grew
SAT       rapidly and in 1814 he won the exclusive right to publish
SAT       all the music performed at La Scala, where he was a
SAT       prompter. Ten years later he purchased the venue's entire
SAT       archive, and by 1835 Ricordi boasted a catalogue of 10,000
SAT       publications. These included most of the operas of
SAT       Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti.
SAT       
SAT       But the company's special relationship with Verdi and
SAT       Puccini was especially significant. Giovanni's grandson
SAT       Giulio persuaded Verdi to come out of retirement in 1880
SAT       and later played a vital role in Puccini's artistic
SAT       career, publishing all his works. Casa Ricordi was also
SAT       the first to come up with the 'royalty' concept and
SAT       successfully lobbied for one of the first laws to protect
SAT       composers' (and publishers') copyright. But was the firm
SAT       always rigorous in its production standards?
SAT       
SAT       The music includes many important operas from the 19th
SAT       century, including Rossini, Bellini, Verdi and Puccini.

SAT       A home is not merely four square walls. It can shape our
SAT       identity; it gives us a sense of place - a sense of
SAT       belonging. Not just a house, but a place where people
SAT       grow, love, play and die.
SAT       
SAT       In this sequence of words and music we celebrate the idea
SAT       of the physical building of a home, the lives that change
SAT       within it, and what stems from it.
SAT       
SAT       Reminiscence starts the programme, with Thomas Hood's
SAT       memories of his childhood home, and Charles Tomlinson's
SAT       elegy on the privacy a door gives to a house. Philip
SAT       Larkin reads his short poem Home - the idea of home
SAT       conceived as one's childhood home and not a place one
SAT       lives now. There's the lavatorial humour in Auden's
SAT       celebration of the smallest room in the house: The
SAT       Geography of theHouse, and Edwin Muir's description of
SAT       post war suburbs.

SAT       The poems move on to address homelessness with Carl
SAT       Sandburg's Old Woman. There's the idea that the asylum has
SAT       become Ivor Gurney's home - a place he cannot escape, and
SAT       then there's John Betjeman with Death in Leamington. The
SAT       sequence finishes with poems by Andrew Motion and Thomas
SAT       Hardy remembering homes past - homes that now exist only
SAT       in the mind.

SAT       Gottschalk's inventive arrangement of Home, Sweet Home
SAT       kicks the programme off musically, swiftly followed by
SAT       Britten's The Building of the House, written for the
SAT       opening of the newly converted Snape Maltings. Strauss
SAT       describes a day in the life of his family in his Sinfonia
SAT       Domestica whilst Meredith Monk and Steve Reich describe
SAT       their home city of New York in Gotham Lullaby and New York
SAT       Counterpoint.

SAT       The final movement of Alban Berg's violin concerto, is
SAT       dedicated 'to the memory of an angel' - Manon Gropius, who
SAT       died at the age of 18. It quotes Bach's harmonization of
SAT       the Chorale melody 'es ist genug' (it is enough Lord).
SAT       Perhaps an emblem of worldly grief, and the song of her
SAT       return to her angelic home.
SAT       
SAT       Copland's Appalachian Spring depicts the celebration
SAT       around the completion of a house for a couple who are
SAT       about to move in. Copland's variations on Simple Gifts are
SAT       interrupted when a revivalist appears and warns the couple
SAT       of what the composer calls the strange and terrible
SAT       aspects of human fate.

SAT       Chris Rea and Simon and Garfunkel make brief appearances,
SAT       as do Lennon and McCartney with their songs of home.
SAT       There's also the delightful arrangement by Courtney Pine
SAT       of Andy Pandy's tune Time to go home.

SAT       To finish the programme, a reprise of Gottschalk's
SAT       arrangement of Home, Sweet Home - a saccharine sweet
SAT       melody, but in Gottschalk's hands, a wistful reminder of
SAT       something familiar, yet perhaps half forgotten.

SUN       the Arts, in Port Erin on the Isle of Man, Stephen Johnson
SUN       explores the nuances and intricacies of the music of Peter
SUN       Warlock.
SUN       
SUN       Warlock, who was born Philip Heseltine in 1894, was an
SUN       eccentric musician, and in the 1920s edited the
SUN       wonderfully combative music magazine The Sackbut. He was
SUN       renowned as a hellraiser - a riotous prankster and great
SUN       drinker, whose circle included fellow musicians such as
SUN       Moeran, Constant Lambert and, occasionally, William Walton.
SUN       
SUN       But this was just one side to the man - Heseltine could
SUN       also be a man of intense melancholy, and his behaviour has
SUN       been the subject of much conjecture since his death (most
SUN       likely by his own hand) in 1930. Stephen asks questions
SUN       about Warlock's perceived bipolarity and the duality of
SUN       his personality which may have led to the diversity in his
SUN       songs.
SUN       
SUN       Tenor Michael Slattery and pianist Stephen Coombs help to
SUN       uncover the genius behind some of Warlock's most beautiful
SUN       songs, with reference to the many intriguing and diverse
SUN       influences behind Warlock's unique sound palette.
SUN       Warlock's lush harmonies and skill at word painting stem
SUN       from his absorption in the music of the Tudor and
SUN       Restoration periods, as well as his childhood obsession
SUN       with Delius, and his friendship and admiration for Bartok

SUN       Julian Joseph talks to saxophonist Andy Sheppard, who has
SUN       released his debut recording, Movements in Colour, on
SUN       European record label ECM. It sees him collaborating with
SUN       the cream of musicians from the European jazz scene -
SUN       tabla player/percussionist Kuljit Bhamra, bassist Alrild
SUN       Andersen, and guitarists John Paricelli and Eivind Aarset.
SUN       Together they create a fusion of African, Latin and Indian
SUN       styles, combining electronic sounds and treatments with
SUN       organic and natural elements.
SUN       
SUN       Sheppard has made a significant impact on the
SUN       international jazz scene over the years, playing and
SUN       writing for settings from solo to big band and chamber
SUN       orchestra. Since the late 1980s, he has composed over 300
SUN       works that incorporate a strong and characteristic sense
SUN       of lyricism alongside a very personal use of rhythms from
SUN       Asia, Africa and South America. Sheppard can also be heard
SUN       on an equally eclectic range of recordings - as well as
SUN       featuring on CDs with Carla Bley and George Russell. He
SUN       has also played on sessions with dub poet Benjamin
SUN       Zephaniah, John Martyn, Baaba Maal, Basia, Nigel Kennedy,
SUN       Bristol indie band Blue Aeroplanes - and even turned up on
SUN       a tribute album to punk group The New York Dolls.
SUN       
SUN       Julian also pays tribute to the late American composer,
SUN       drummer, theorist and conductor George Russell. Russell
SUN       played drums with Benny Carter and later wrote for Dizzy
SUN       Gillespie. His musical theories went on to influence the
SUN       modal music of Miles Davis and John Coltrane, and he also
SUN       developed the Lydian concept in 1953, credited as the
SUN       first theoretical contribution from jazz.

TUE       1944. His life ended tragically when he was killed by the
TUE       Nazis as his labour unit was driven on a forced march from
TUE       a camp in Serbia to Austria. When his body was later
TUE       exhumed, a notebook of poems was found hidden in his
TUE       clothing containing some of his greatest and most
TUE       memorable poems.

TUE       Like most Hungarians of her generation, Mia remembers
TUE       studying Radnoti's poems at school, and her imagination
TUE       being fired both by the story of his sad and premature
TUE       death and by the revolutionary, tender lyricism of his

THU       Baroque music - Bach and Handel.

THU       John Taylor was a charlatan - a charismatic, womanising
THU       practitioner who lied his way to treat popes, royalty and
THU       anyone else who could afford his high fees. He treated
THU       Bach, after the composer's failing sight prevented him
THU       from continuing to work on The Art of Fugue, performing a
THU       procedure known as 'couching' - using a needle to pierce
THU       the composer's eyes and displace his cataracts. Some
THU       months after his operation - after days filled with pain,
THU       fever and vivid hallucinations - Bach died, leaving his
THU       great work incomplete.

THU       When Taylor was called upon to treat the eyes of London's
THU       foremost musical celebrity, Handel, he completely blinded
THU       him and the composer never wrote music again.
